For this entry, the chess match between Zero Preston and Emma “Masterpiece” Lawford continues onward via Dark Horse Comics. With revenge as his motive, Preston crashes into Lawford’s world. An ordinary teenager finds out quickly she’s anything but. Emma’s parents are legendary thieves. Preston was one of their targets. The ultimate revenge for him means ruining her life. Little did he realize what his actions would cause.

After confronting Preston at his mansion, the favor is returned to Emma and her team. Andrew Garrison the IV leads a group to track down Emma’s presumed location. Once they get inside, the group find no one. All that’s waiting for them is a laptop with a note to “play”.

Emma leaves a video recording. In the message she informs Garrison she has all his hidden information. Readers see the moves set in motion. Emma advises Garrison to quit his chase. If not, how will Preston react knowing he never completed his job?

The answer to that question is interrupted by The Paragon! The imposing figure demonstrates his style of action. He beats the group to a bloody pulp! Once that business is finished, it’s onward to the next phase.

What does Emma have in store now? How will Preston respond to the failure of Garrison? Readers sit ringside as both parties take their plans up a few levels. The final act tips off a few clues as to where the mystery heads now. None will be more impactful than who enters the game on the final page. Just when you think you have all the answers, more questions are thrown into the mix.

Bendis paces the back and forth moments to give readers a closer look into both parties schemes. Emma has emerged as the true heir to her family’s reputation. The dynamic between her set-up for Garrison is through and leads off perfectly for the Paragon to appear. Post the encounter, the story shifts back towards Preston.

The writing reflects his brash defiance that Emma is challenging him. Even with the results of the Paragon’s involvement, Preston looks shaken but refusing to accept his loss. This plays well for the closing act and the drastic measures he takes. Each side gets ample time to shine and this only builds more excitement for what is unfolding within this tale.

Maleev, Herring and Meng give the Paragon a huge entrance into this chapter. Switching from dark Blue to tinted Yellow connects with the change of demeanor and attack. The use of Red also makes the images pop, which is another cool technique.

The page panel used for Preston’s reaction is a complex one that readers will enjoy. The facial reactions vary to Preston finally comprehending what is going on. The grainy footage from the tablet also stands out to amplify his emotions. This builds towards a nice parting shot to throw another twist into a can’t miss story.

With revenge fueling the dangerous game of cat and mouse, the showdown between Lawford and Preston takes things up a few notches. Through flawless writing and exceptional imagery, each party make bold moves to ensure victory. Will it be enough in the end?

THE DEAD LUCKY #12 (BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points! It’s the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a Massive-verse Pillar’s second arc. Since returning to her hometown of San Francisco, Bibiana Lopez-Yang has been challenged by Morrow. The tech company and its boss Jimmi Moss has plans of changing the city. Being a reluctant hero, Bibi has been thrusted into the role of protector.

The battle for San Francisco has not been easy or without loss. Bibi’s former boyfriend and longtime ally Eddie Martinez was a casualty of this conflict. Conflicting matters more has been the re-appearance of Pyre. With everything she has gone through, Bibi continues to act by a certain motto: “I don’t need to be good. I just needs to be lucky.”

Bibi and Pyre watch the chaos unfold between Morrow’s forces and Bibi’s small mech team. The conversation doesn’t go the way Bibi would like. She talks of teaming up to end things once and for all. Pyre is more intent on watching the world burn. Unwilling to just sit by, Bibi leaves the talk.

Meanwhile, Jimmi Moss has become a twisted version of a “better tomorrow”. Moss has turned himself into a type of cyborg to fend off a terminal illness. He’s taking the mayor hostage. Moss wants chaos and won’t stop till he gets it.

The stage is set as Bibi makes her way to the Mayor’s office. What chance does Bibi have of ending Moss’s streak of terror? Readers sit back and watch how the actions of both have led to this very explosive meeting.

The fallout is well paced as a battle of this proportion isn’t so cut and dry. Most importantly, the fallout effects Bibi in a strong evolution of character. The closing act is a bittersweet epilogue to the battle. Readers can expect a wide range of emotions with Bibi’s words guiding them along the way.

The final page is a perfect way to say good bye for now, but definitely NOT forever….

Flores brings a fitting and intense close to the latest chapter of Bibi’s journey. For this second arc, much time has been devoted to Pyre’s return and his impact. The opening monologue reflects the deep rooted ties of their past. It also serves as a sort of closure for the pair as this entire run has been constructed for one certain showdown….

The confrontation between Bibi and Moss gives readers a long awaited payoff. Flores’ writing shows the natural growth of Bibi in her role of hero. There is one moment which highlights this over others. The transformation from revenge driven mindset to protector of the city is exemplified within this moment. The epilogue is a heartfelt send-off to one chapter of Bibi’s life as she welcomes a new one ahead. It’s a superb closing point in the ever-changing world for one Bibiana Lopez-Yang.

Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey multi-task the intense drama and big action for this conclusion. The opeing pages reflect those themes. From Bibi’s reaction to the battle right to the big battle itself, the art team brings out all the stops for the art.

Another major image is when Bibi crashes the Mayor’s office. It’s a mid page panel that structures the page into a turning point. The pacing keeps events moving forward with ease. The conflict is officially over with a full page image of Bibi speaking about her dreams.

The final pages help lift the weight of the strong writing to carry the book to the finish line. The parting image is well-crafted and will leave readers on a high note for the future.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

The latest chapter of Bibiana Lopez-Yang ends on a solid, bittersweet ending. Flores’ writing showcases the growth of not only a hero but the person behind the powers. Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey put together the impactful imagery that concludes events for time being, but readers will be lucky to see more down the road.

The chapter begins with the attack on the Pit in full swing. More soldiers from Major Bludd’s group decent onto the building. Stalker is holding them back in a losing effort. His situation is ironically more controlled than what lies beneath the Pit…

The Baroness has Duke at gun point. After shooting Major Bludd last issue, she is poised to collect the bounty on Duke’s head. Duke bluntly tells her to get it over with after telling her what the fallout will be with her actions. With the amount of people looking for Duke and his information, there is no such thing as a certain pay day. The Baroness backs off. Stalker gets the drop on her. Duke says to hold his attack.

With Clutch and Rock n Roll in tow, Duke leads them on an escape from the soldiers moving in. There is no turning back. There’s only one way out for the group. They need to dive further underground.

Readers witness as the unlikely allies prepare to ascend and take the fight to Bludd’s forces. The conflict hits the gas pedal and never lets up. How will the alliances hold up? With time running out, choices are made. One steers Duke onto a new path. Greeting him might be the answers he is searching for. However, there’s an obstacle in his path on the final page that might derail plans once and for all!

One thing is for certain: If you want action, you have come to the right place! Williamson orchestrates huge moments while delving into Duke’s complex situation. The conversation with the Baroness is filled with an uneasy tone of reluctant trust. Fans will gravitate towards how Duke takes over running the escape mission. For any new readers to the fandom, it’s prime example of how he has become the legendary leader of G.I. Joe.

Williamson also sets events in motion for the finale through this chaotic scene. Duke is written as unbreakable much like his spirit. This drives the final act forward. Once events lead to the closing pages, the writing places the key players in their spots for what will be no doubt a classic finale.

Reilly and Bellaire spare no expense in giving fans bold action images. The face-off with Baroness and Duke is boiling over with tension and anxiousness. Duke’s demeanor shines through leading to its’ eventual outcome. The escape from the Pit kicks off with a HUGE two page spread that locks readers in for the action.

Wooton’s lettering here is the perfect touch to the frantic motion going on. These images guide readers into a solid final act. The closing full page panel will have readers pacing for the final to drop. It’s another sign of fantastic work from this creative team.

With danger at every turn, the franchise of the G.I. Joe fandom shows why he is that of legend with another excellent read. Williamson constructs a hero’s unbreakable will through his writing. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooten give fans much to be excited about with their energetic action imagery. All signs point to an epic finale based off this strong lead-in chapter.

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #5 (DC COMICS)

This chapter begins with a look at FBI Headquarters With word of the battle between Alan Scott and Vladimir Sokov aka John Ladd unfolding, action needs to be taken. The director opts not to call the President. He has other plans in mind.

Meanwhile, Alan Scott made a risky move last we saw him. Running low on power, Scott dabbles with the Crimson Flame! It appears not to be as effective with a Green Lantern wielding it. Sokov manages to elude Scott’s attack. Readers witness the rage and emotion pouring out of Scott in these moments. Knowing what Sokov has done to hurt his former lover, the aggression can’t be contained.

Can Scott keep his feelings in check to stop Sokov? With the power surge fading fast, an unlikely action appears to swing momentum. Readers watch as Scott is confronted with a sense of repurpose and a warning.

This all builds into a change that shakes the story down to its core. The closing act raises the stakes even higher than before. Just when readers think the end is here, the final page will have them on the edge of their seats waiting for the finale!

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #5 by Tim Sheridan, Cian Tormey, Matt Herms, Hi-Fi and Lucas Gattoni (DC Comics - Cover: Brandon Peterson)

Sheridan dives into the intensity of Scott’s personal connection to elevate the battle to another level. With Sokov’s systematic attacks, the writing has shown Scott reeling from trying to wrap his head around what has been done. Heading into this issue, Scott took drastic chances. With a well-timed intervention, the Green Lantern gets a personal re-affirmation about the hero he is supposed to be. It’s a game changer moment that sets the story into a clear direction.

The latter portion of the book will please many fans. The action comes in quickly and showcases the heroics of Scott, even against overwhelming odds. Sheridan sets up the finale with a huge moment to exit on that readers can’t help themselves not to be amped for.

Tormey, Herms, and Gattoni bring a “big fight feel” to the battle of the Lanterns. The many different reactions Scott goes through fighting Sokov add much weight to hit with readers. This leads into the changing point of the conflict when Scott has a moment of “green” clarity. Gattoni’s lettering sets that moment with showcasing Sheridan’s writing hitting its mark with Scott.

The remainder of the issue is classic superhero storytelling. There’s an excellent two page spread introducing readers to another level of conflict. As great as that image is, it gets tough competition from the closing page. A full panel entrance makes a bold statement, sending the story into the finale. This creative team knows no bounds on the heights they’re taking readers on.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The pen-ultimate issue of the original Green Lantern burns bright with a chapter that can’t be mixed. Sheridan balances heavy action and drama with his excellent script. Tormey, Herms, and Gattoni provide the vivid imagery to give readers an Alan Scott ready for the immense threat lying in his path. This series continues to be a must-have every time it drops.

The never-ending quest for power has led right to the door steps of the Dreadnoks. If last issue’s ending is any indication, the road to victory is sinking fast.

COBRA COMMANDER #3 by Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milana, Annalisa Leoni and Rus Wooton puts COBRA’s eventual leader right in the arms of danger!

The issue begins with the Commander’s mysterious “bodyguard” walking through the Florida everglades. The Commander is missing. Readers witness that he’s been taken underwater by the swamps’ inhabitants. When a harpoon enters the water, it picks up the Commander out of the jaws of danger…for now.

Meanwhile, Zatana is addressing the rest of the Dreadnoks at their bar hangout. She unveils a valuable object. Readers see first hand an Energon Cube! The mood shifts to optimism. The conversation delivers a note of someone who was snooping around the swamp as well. Zandar walks in with a captured Cobra Commander!

What do the Dreadnoks do with their prisoner? Readers see first hand how unwelcomed guests are treated. However, the breaking of the Commander isn’t so easy. Someone has to walk away with the upper hand. The closing pages reveal a clear cut winner. It also greets readers with a surprise entrant into the fray. With a final page that is guaranteed to leave an impression, the quest for Energon looks to be talking a deadly detour into uncharted waters.

Williamson dives head first into the dark levels surrounding the search for power. Seeing the amount of violence involved, the chapter walks a fine line of horror. The Dreadnoks are featured as pawns thinking they’re royalty. This plays into the scheming and cunning of the Commander. Once the true game begins, it is an easy connect with readers of who is in charge. The ironic poetry of the closing page is perfect to lead the audience into the story’s next phase.

Milana and Leoni don’t pull their punches with the acts of torture in this issue. It gets taken to another level with the creative use of looking thru The Commander’s eyes for a few panels. This translates greater when the Commander makes his move. Readers will also be blown away by a gorgeous two full page spread giving a certain character a dramatic debut.

Events are concluded on a superb note. Wooden’s lettering is the star of the final page. The words continue to build and elevate an already dangerous situation. It complements a complex game with a clear cut winner emerging.

FINAL POINT: 9

All is fair game in the quest for power. Through Williamson’s excellent storytelling, the face of COBRA stands off against the Dreadnoks in a brutally strong manner. Milana, Leoni and Wooden craft the extreme actions taken leading to a show-stopping finish. The horror-driven tale delivers another winning chapter.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #25 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, DC Comics has been on a roll with their superhero stories. That said, one has made an argument for being the best of the best. Pairing two icons together is an easy win. Having one of comic’s best creative teams continuously deliver hit after hit? That’s what makes certain runs legendary.

Now at an anniversary issue, the series flips the mirror to spotlight two villains and their first encounter that sparks a dangerous alliance.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #25 by MARK WAID, DAN MORA, Steve Pugh, Tamra Bonvillain, Adriano Lucas and Steve Wands unveils the first meeting of LEX LUTHOR and THE JOKER!

Let’s take a closer look at the pair’s initial meeting.

Years ago in Gotham City, The World’s Finest swoop into a casino in danger. The attendees are running from a poisonous green gas. Inside is the clown prince of crime, The Joker. Superman inhales the deadly gas and takes it into space. Batman breaks thru a door to confront his old enemy.

Once defeated, Joker is transported by the pair to Arkham Asylum. Even put in a straightjacket, Batman warns the doctor nearby to be careful. The doctor hears the warning and the heroes leave. Suddenly, the doctor reveals he’s wearing a mask. Behind the disguise is non e other than Lex Luthor!

Readers see that Luthor breaks Joker out for a mission all their own. A map of a madman could lead to immense power. For all his smarts, Luthor and his team can’t crack its code. The solution: bring in another madman to break the encryption. Simple, right?

With these two combustible personalities, its anything but. Their path leads into places that defy logic. On the way, their conversations provides an insight that will be a hit with the audience.

Will this pair reach their goal? The final act provides a definitive answer as it marks a beginning of a deadly new pairing for years to come.

Waid dives back into the first meeting theme with another great chapter. The dynamic between Luthor and Joker has always been a tense one. Waid never lets that escape the pair’s different motives for their caper.

Pacing helps keep the unpredictability rolling through the story. The best example of this is the pint where Luthor and Joker have a “heart to heart” about motivation. This moment lights the match for the eventful blow-up later. Let’s face it, with the Joker involved, does anything run smoothly? The closing act plays into what some may expect, but its not a bad thing. Events wrap up with an excellent final page. It leaves a lasting point for stories to follow involving these two legendary evils.

The art captures a vintage time early in the World’s Finest time. Joker has a classic purple suit of the times. Pugh shows the insanity of the Joker in a mid-panel, demonstrating them being “twinsies”.

This leads into a journey reflecting the script key Joker is translating. The images give a sense of magic and wonder. This gets a break with a full page panel showing the breakdown from Luthor and Joker’s perspective. The back and forth game between the pair exemplifies the unpredictability of their team-up. The parting image is a solid way to end one chapter and start many more throughout the years.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The ultimate odd couple stands out in an unforgettable first meeting. Waid takes readers back in time with a classic story. The art demonstrates their unlikely methods of teamwork with solid imagery that fits such a vintage tail. Readers will be very pleased to see this piece of DC history hit the LCS.

For this entry, we’re beginning the final story of Jace Boucher. The Butcher of BOOM! Studios’ “Slaughterverse” has been carving a path in the Something is Killing The Children spin-off for quite some time. After recent events, Boucher appears to be on a deadly collision course. The Order of St. George is not one to forgive and forget. With them in pursuit, Boucher elects to play a deadly game. Can he win?

In the port of New Orleans, a caravan of black cars drive. The narration tells a timeless story. Suddenly a voice asks to pull over. A man jumps out coughing blood. He sees the silhouette of Boucher in the distance. Reality sets in and the image disappears. The man is the Old Dragon of House Slaughter.

The group representing the Order of St. George has entered the halls of the House Of Boucher. Readers watch as the moment’s tension cuts like a blade. Both houses have different styles all their own. However, both agree on the same thing: End Jace Boucher once and for all. The meeting ends with the Old Dragon still scheming as winning this contest is the only option.

What does this mean for Jace? Readers witness as the life he’s tried hard to build now comes into direct danger. From the previous stories, Jace is far from healed of his demons. The final parting pages leave no question that Jace is determined to slay them along with his enemies. Let the hunting begin!

Brombal leans heavy into the uneasiness of the two factions for where this story leads. Dragon’s arrogance to the House Of Boucher is returned to make for a game of one-upmanship. The writing showcases the impact Boucher’s actions have on both houses. It adds more fuel to their causes to eliminate him.

Jace’s demons still play a factor into his role with the story. The writing mirrors the damage that has been done previously. It helps to build what is decided in the closing moments. The seeds have been planted for a dangerous chess match.

Fuso and Muerto construct a high level of pressure when the houses meet. The mannerisms shown towards each other indicates the uneasy alliance being made. The panels lead with Dragon getting a feel for the new house before turning the tables into his own favor.

The imagery of Jace shows his confliction with well placed flashbacks. The battle with the monster is fitting of the tow-page spread it gets. The battle is perfectly capped off with a bloodied Jace emerging from battle in a full page shot. The closing images leave readers with no hesitation of Jace leaving everything on the table when it’s all said and done with the Houses.

The last stand of the Butcher begins with a slow burn first issue. Brombal crafts the writing to weave the key players towards their eventual collision course. Ever since the Hellfire Gala, Orchis has been running rough shot over the X-Men and mutantkind as a whole. The evil organization is on the cusp of eliminating Xavier’s dream. Standing in their way is a skeleton crew of X-Men leaving it all on the line to survive.

This chapter begins with Juggernaut dragging a weakened Krokoa through a desert land. Usually Cain Marko is unstoppable. This is until an adamantium harpoon is impaled in his leg. Orchis soldiers have arrived in reworked SHIELD transportation and begin to open fire on the pair. Juggernaut is doing all he can to fight back but the situation looks grim. Luckily, help is on the way….

Elsewhere in France, Cyclops has escaped execution due to the interference of Orchis R&D director Dr. Alia Gregor. The pair heads into the underground area of the Seine river. They’re greeted by Orchis forces which Cyclops handles with ease. Magik appears and provides transportation to a familiar spot X-Men fans know all too well.

Readers don’t have time to process that as events shift back to a major thorn in the X-Men’s side: Dr. Stasis (A version of Mr. Sinister). Stasis is on the run from Emma Frost with the life of Firestar hanging in the balance.

Will Emma and company save Firestar? What does Cyclops and Dr. Gregor find in their new surroundings? Talk about moving parts, there’s a whole portion of the book focused on Apocalypse that we haven’t discussed!

Trust me when I say there is a whole mix of drama and action that will lock readers in. This is classic X-Men storytelling. The final pages will leave readers in suspense as events shift into an uncharted direction. This series is living up to the hype as an event! Get ready for a knockout chapter!

Duggan gives fans much to be excited with this latest installment. The Cyclops storyline has been a major driver for this series. The dynamic between Dr. Gregor and Summers has made for an unlikely pairing. Duggan gives them a solid meeting point to grow from. The conclusion of their pairing is a shocking twist to readers.

The moment fans will be most talking about is the Emma Frost vs. Stasis drama. Duggan paces events off with a strong pace that never lets a moment slip by. The conclusion is well done. It plays right into the characters involved, including a moment of “inadequately” that will get a quick laugh. Juggling so many characters, Duggan gives all the stories enough time to grow and hook fans in. The ending only raises stakes higher heading into the final stretch.

Werneck and Morales take the art duties for this issue. The Cyclops escape comes off dramatically with a solid near full page panel to showcase his powers. The Emma/Stasis drama ranges from heart-stopping action to split panels building towards a full page image demonstrating a devastating attack. It’s fallout mixes in small humor that can only be done by Emma Frost with a memorable reunion to end with. The final pages will shock and catch readers off-guard. It caps off a chapter that doesn’t delay in speeding things into the next phase.

FINAL POINT: 9

The X-Men do not hear a final bell as their last stand vs. Orchis continues! Duggan balances the dramatic atmosphere with big moments. The art team of Werneck, Morales, Valenza and Lanham give readers much to enjoy with strong visuals leaving a lasting imprint heading into the next phase.

With their arrival on Earth, the Autobots and Decepticons have brought a never-ending battle to a world not ready for it. There have been casualties and damage galore. Through it all, Optimus Prime and his group have been the only thing holding Starscream and his soldiers back from taking over everything.

The fight has been brought right to the crashed ship where it all began. Starscream has set the trap. He’s unleashed DEVASTATOR onto the Autobots. Who will be left standing in the end?

This issue begins with The Autobots and Sparky Whitwicky looking for cover as Devastator starts its’ attack. Cliffjumper and Carly race into the battle. Carly swerves Cliffjumper out of direction to get higher ground to attack. The pair is greeted by Starscream for a showdown of the ages.

The Autobots reclaim their spaceship but Devastator still pushes its’ onslaught. With more wounded transformers mounting, things are looking bleak. Even the great Optimus Prime looks like his final moments are approaching.

Readers watch as the darkest hour approaches. An ultimate sacrifice is made. Will it be enough to turn the tide? With unrelenting action, the battle is taken to a whole different level of intensity. Choices are made and lines are drawn.

The fallout packs the emotional weight of all of Cybertron. There are strong images declaring victory but none like the final image. That one concludes events with a somber moment showing the high cost of victory.

Take about ending things on a mic drop moment. Johnson weaves in the heartfelt toll of combat throughout this issue. The opening displays the frantic attempt of survival for the wounded Autobots. Optimus Prime is written as the powerful leader he is, even in a heavily damaged body. This leads into the ultimate sacrifice previously mentioned. Once that moment hits page, Readers will be caught up in the powerful turning point.

From there, it’s nothing but big action. The visions of Optimus fighting back steal each page. No matter what condition, the art reflects his fighting spirit. There is a mind-blowing THREE PAGE ending to the main event. The two-page full spread is jaw dropping of its’ impact. The resolution still conveys the price paid in conflict. The reactions run high for all parties involved. Johnson captures them with ease. This all builds towards the final page. The closing panel might make some eyes water as the adrenaline wears off. It’s a defining image that will leave readers in a bittersweet place until next time.

FINAL POINT: 10

The first arc of Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers brings the house down with a rollercoaster of big action and bigger emotion. Readers will be blown away by the intense art and even more impactful writing. It’s high level storytelling that is way more than meets the eye.

October 2023 - Aaron Kern is out of jail. The public knows him as “The Accountability Killer”. Due to a technicality in his confession, Kern is now free. His father, Former assistant Chief Ben Kern, looks to stop his son before another body is killed. In searching for answers, Ben Kern and reporter Julia Paige piece together the identity of the copycat killer of Kern’s M.O.: Bartender Harrison Gill.

Working with the Pittsburgh Police Dept., Kern sets a sting to catch Gill. Gill runs away after stabbing an officer. While leaving the scene, Gill’s mask and a gun are found in his car.

This issue begins with a meeting at the Pittsburgh PD headquarters led by Chief Mixon. There’s a briefing about tracking down Gill. Readers find out he might be hiding in the woods as he has been off the grid for a few weeks. Before adjuring, Detective August Singh mentions about the .38 special and the forensic report now in the possession of the Pittsburgh Ledger.

The report is tied to a police shooting of the past. Thirty Five years ago to be exact. Once readers find out who was involved, the course of the case shifts gears into new territory.

The public outcry differs away from the case at hand. The new information brings out the Weiss Macht Brotherhood, a far-right militant group. They have an axe to grind with the names mentioned in the report.

What follows next is a high-stakes affair where lives are in danger. The thrills don’t falter as the story speeds for the final moments. Once they hit, the story heads back into focus with more secrets poised to be revealed.

Just when you think you have the story figured out, Higgins and Buccellato change the questions. Throwing in a new side plot this late in the tale might not work. However, the pacing allows for the moment to build steam and give more intrigue into Ben Kern. Once thought of as a moral compass, the new plot shows not everything is cut and dry.

His current stat quo changes everything heading into the finale. With the introduction of the new “social group”, they provide some insight to how this story is affecting the people of Pittsburgh to a certain degree. The closing brings events back into focus towards the case. This might have been a small detour but one that gives fans a moment to brace as things speed to a close.

Borges returns to art duties after a small break. The build toward the gun reveal works as it leads to a full page newspaper shot. Readers can easily sense the dramatic shift within the story. The media reaction is presented with great use of panels.

The action panels with the WMB are fast paced and never slow down. The frantic images hit their marks in bringing the danger front and center. The closing moments slow things down to where the story comes back to the original investigation. It’s a serious image to lead readers into the home stretch of this incredible series.

FINAL POINT: 9

The Massive-Verse’s biggest mystery adds more dynamics into an already complex story. Led by the superb writing of Higgins and Buccellato, a character’s image is revealed to be shattered. Through the excellent images of Borges, Englert & Otsmane-Elhaou, fans are treated to a detour in plot before returning into focus for the main course to be served.

A voice narrates the skyline of Gotham City. The mood is dark. A figure is standing in the shadows of the rooftops. The narrator leads the reader into their disdain for Batman and his “soldiers”.

The voice is revealed to be Dr. Kirk Langstrom aka Man-Bat. Man-Bat is standing over a group of masked figures. His speech is leading the mob to “take their image back”. Soaking in the adoration, another figure isn’t so keen with Man-Bat’s pampering. Shush is frustrated at the pause in plans to take down Batman and Robin. Man-Bat tries re-assuring her that the plan is still on track and to be patient.

Meanwhile, the dynamic duo has someone else crash their investigation. Flatline has caught up with her “close” friend Damian Wayne. She’s in Gotham looking for her sister Mila. However, readers soon find out that a simple search mission might be more than it seems.

What secrets is Flatline hiding? How does her arrival change the search for Man-Bat? The action shifts into a new direction as Damian’s heart guides his actions. Reveals unfold heavily in the closing pages. The final image throws everything in flux, much to fans delight.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 by Joshua Williamson, Simone Di Meo, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC Comics - Cover: Derrick Chew)

Williamson continues to impress with this series. The latest chapter gives readers an insight on Damian rarely seen. With Flatline in the mix, the usually brooding Damian fades away. In its’ place is a teenage boy hanging out with his first love. It’s a stark contrast but one that proves to hit its’ mark.

Batman’s reactions are priceless including a certain one liner about “One Not To Lecture”. It’s a refreshing change that leaning into the strong family dynamic that makes this series such a hit.

Di Meo returns after being off the previous two issues and wastes no time bringing the excitement with Niro and Wands. There is an incredible two-page spread showcasing Batman and his “soldiers”. The flashback panels of Flatline and Robin make for a nice break in the action. Damian’s reactions throughout the issue bring the hidden “human” side of him to the readers.

The action sequences are gifted another excellent two-page shot of Flatline and Robin handling trouble. The Batman panels are perfectly set up right till the final image. Once readers see that, the whole story is turned on its axis. It’s another high level craft of storytelling.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The family bond between father and son has some competition when first love comes to town in this latest chapter. Williamson balances the serious case with family bonding like no one else. Di Meo’s return brings an electric feel to the brooding Gotham City for a chapter you won’t want to miss.

Darak and Solila are an unlikely pair. Representing different colonies, their paths have crossed. Since that point, things have been “complicated to say the least. Their escape from Zertonia has now led them into the Wastelands.

Premier Zalilak is none too happy with the pair. He knows what will happen if they succeed in uniting the colonies. He’s willing to unleash a great threat onto them. Zalilak has made the choice to revive Proximus.

The issue opens up with a flashback ten years prior. It reflects Darak’s first venture into the Wastelands. In the present, a plan is reached. Solila has reservations but desperate times call for equal measures. The pair heads into the unknown…

Meanwhile, the deal between Zalilak and Proximus is being struck. Readers quickly find out there is more to this deal than anyone realizes. Once it is struck, the course of action switches gears.

How will Darak and Solila be able to handle the oncoming threat? Their journey leads to many obstacles along the way. Judging by the final pages, there is more vested parties interested in what’s next. The second arc is wasting no time in turning up the drama.

Kirkman starts this new arc shrouding it in mystery. The landscape of the Wastelands turns into its’ own character. The mystique of the land has an impact on Darak that ill only be more telling. The writing of the pair’s conversation continues to be a strength of the series. It’s an extreme odd couple that provides many scenarios for this journey to head into.

The dynamic between Zalilak and Proximus is a show-stealer. Kirkman builds their tense partnership up until a shocking reveal. Readers will be locked into what Proximus does next. it can only lead to no good, which is always a win for the the audience.

De Felici and Delpeche give Proximus a grand entrance. The “agreement” portion of his time plays into his arrogance and self-belief. This is instantaneously switched when his true self is revealed. It’s a shocking moment that adds more once the full page panel shows his final image.

There are some great two-page spreads depicting the Wastelands. It establishes the rough terrain that the pair needs to venture through. The art team gives it a certain look which makes it seem like its’ own character. This ties into the final act. Once the chapter arrives at this point, the final image proves we’re only getting started on the journey for unity.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The second phase of The Energon Universe’s pace setter dives heavy into story in its latest chapter. Kirkman keeps readers on their toes with a pivotal character introduction. The art gives a bold welcome of the new player into the story with solid imagery. Where we go from here is anyone’s guess but you don’t want to miss out.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT 2024)

With two major hits coming via Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Black Panther, fans have been checking out the new vision of Marvel’s heroes. The latest installment has much hype behind it. It’s not only due to the franchise but the visionary creator steering the project.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham looks to redefine what fans know of the Children of The Atom.

Let’s take a deeper dive at what is unfolding here.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment)

The issue begins with Kirigaya Minami Middle School in Japan. HISAKO ICHIKI is walking through the school grounds for graduation. A classmate runs over to her and gives her a “second button.” Readers find out that symbolizes a crush. She claims it’s from a boy. When Hisako looks over, no one is there. Thinking it’s a rank, she looks at the button. Attached to it is a note. It reads asking Hisako to meet up at the temple behind the school.

Hisako goes and sees someone familiar: her friend Tsubasa. However, she tells herself the vision isn’t real. Suddenly, a shadowy figure emerges. It hands Hisako a Red OMAMORI (charm pendant). The figure begins to reference Tsubasa.

Readers find out the tragic tale involving him and his death. With the figure pressing the issue, Hisako begins to flashback to memories. The overwhelming feelings push her to run away. As she’s peddling on her bicycle, Hisako comes right into the line of a moving car!

What happens next sets Hisako on a path of discovery. Who is this mysterious figure bringing up the past? What is the secret behind her OMAMORI? The story does head into darker territory as Hisako is confronted with the shadow figure’s next move. The final image leaves no doubt this isn’t your typical X-Men story.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment)

Momoko sets the stage for a very different X-Men tale. Hisako is written with many levels to her character. When readers see her first, she is an outsider that has gone through some trauma. The confrontation with the Shadow figure (Shadow King?) drives home her broken state. Dealing with Tsubasa’s death at young age, the writing reflects the devasting effects of that event.

Once the issue shifts into the pendant’s secret, the story leans into Hisako solving the mystery. The confrontation is very dark and emotional. Its’ fallout mirrors the themes. This leaves readers with a strong sense of eerie doubt as to what lies ahead.

The art is incredible with Momoko’s unforgettable style. The introduction to the shadow figure is subtle but scene stealing. The flashback sequences paint the picture of youth innocence taken away. Tsubasa’s fate is bold and disturbing in its’ near full page panel.

The pendant’s reveal is loud with a two-page spread signifying the event. The latter portion of the chapter brings out a wide range of emotions from Hisako. It leaves readers with many questions heading into it’s next phase.

FINAL POINT: 7.8

The new vision of Marvel’s Children of the Atom delivers a darker and haunting introduction with the first chapter. Momoko brings imaginative storytelling to welcome readers into Hisako’s world. It is one that will stand out from the crowd and has plenty of room to grow further.

THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #5 (MAD CAVE STUDIOS)

For this entry, we’re diving back into an intense story that combines elements of horror, action, and drama. The one-upsmanship style chase between Father Vieri and Legion has taken some insane turns. Where the story braces to go now will surely keep fans on the edge of their seats.

THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #5 by David Pepose, Alex Cormack, Justin Birch (Mad Cave Studios) looks to turn things up a few notches with this latest chapter.

Let’s take a closer look and see where we go from here.

On a burning ship, the spirit of Father Vieri is trapped inside its’ current vessel. Mortally wounded, time is not on the side of the Father. As Vieri makes his call, a name is mentioned that is answered. The name is Santiago Izan.

A spirit emerges. It claims to be the real Santiago Izan. Before there’s time to react, they’re taken down to Hell via demons.

Meanwhile, Legion (in Vieri’s body) stands over the fallen Brother Gabriel. Legion plans to explain the gapping hole in Gabriel’s body. His plans are interrupted by Cardinal Pentecost. Pentecost calls him out for his bizarre behavior. The conversation heats up. It’s interrupted by Maria, who knows that Legion is inside Vieri’s body.

Suffice to say, there are a LOT of moving parts with this story. The descent into the darkness challenges Vieri. Readers see his story take a few twists in finding the truth. The question becomes will he solve it in time?

As for Legion, can he thwart off the Cardinal and Maria? The challengers arise but a power play is made. Readers see a dramatic moment sends things heavily into Legion’s favor. This all boils over into the final pages where the ultimate showdown looks to be heading for an explosive finale.

Pepose excells in juggling the vast character stories with this chapter. Both Vieri and Legion’s paths take intense shifts within these pages. Vieri’s path lets his true character shine as he tries saving a soul. The same can be said for Legion. He is pure evil and the writing gives him devious charisma while executing his plans. It’s a classic tale of good vs evil.

The build towards the close comes off steady and to the point. The shocking moments just flow and never feel forced. It gives both leads a final sell to the readers of the magnitude of the final confrontation.

Cormack and Birch spare no expense with the horror elements. The full page panel where Vieri gets pulled to Hell jumps off the page. Meanwhile, It’s been weeks without Batman in the streets. Criminals are making moves. A heist in Gotham is loudly interrupted by missiles flying into a tractor trailer. Instantly, the mood changes. The criminals know who’s coming. They’re brutally taken out one by one. A lone survivor is picked out to rely a message.

That message: “BATMAN IS BACK”

However, it’s not Bruce Wayne. It’s Failsafe. A new era of fighting crime in Gotham has been born. How does the public react to the new “Batman”? What of Bruce Wayne? Can he escape Failsafe’s grasp?

Readers watch as Failsafe makes an impact with not only the citizens of Gotham, but the Bat-Family itself. As for Bruce Wayne, his path to reclaiming the mantle is thrown into discourse. Just when he thinks he has hope, Failsafe has already made plans to thwart them.

Judging by the final moments, another surprise factor has been injected into the mix. Bruce Wayne has been challenged but his limits will be tested like never before with this latest story.

There is also a backup story from Zdarsky, Michele Bandini, Alex Sinclair and Clayton Cowles that gives more depth to the Joker’s connection with Dr. Captio.

Zdarsky paints a bleak future for Batman in this latest story. The back and forth with Joker drives home the point of Batman’s worst nightmare coming true. Failsafe’s assault on Gotham comes off flawlessly and defiantly. The writing of the Bat Family only elevate the threat level.

Bruce’s frantic attempt to escape leads readers into a path unexpected. Knowing this is the culmination of a perfect Batman, the writing shows how mistaken the intentions can be. The closing chapter leaves a unique close with a character’s involvement affecting Bruce’s situation. It’s a solid opening chapter with many miles to go.

Jimenez and Morey give Failsafe a dramatic entrance with a strong full page image. The frustration of Wayne to the situation is an easy connection with readers. His mannerisms scream doubt and defeat.

This builds towards a dramatic apprehension of a classic rogue. The half page panel sets up the impact of Failsafe of Gotham residents clearly. The final page leaves readers with a parting shot to discuss before searching for more answers next issue. It’s a high level of visuals as always with this art team.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

Failsafe stakes its’ claim as Gotham City’s protector with a strong outing. Zdarsky constructs this new era with excellent writing. Jimenez, Morey and Cowles’ engaging art gifts readers with a visual impression that hits its’ marks. The new stat quo of Batman has arrived, whether the DCU is ready or not.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

Madame Masque has been the focal point for NYC’s gang war. After orchestrating the conflict, Masque is poised to take over the underworld. With Central Park being the location, Masque and her main rival, the Beetle, meet. Surrender is not an option. The battle ensue.

During the melee, Tombstone makes his true intentions known. After working as an uneasy ally to Spidey, he confronts his daughter and clips her wings (literally). Now with the Beetle off the board, can Spider-Man stop the fury of Madame Masque’s army?

This chapter begins with Spidey squaring off with Masque. The unified front of Beetle’s army and Spidey’s friends are holding their own. This is working until someone changes the call. Tombstone tells Beetle’s forces that the alliance is over.

With the shift in numbers, Spidey’ friends are overwhelmed. Count Nefaria blasts Spider-Man with enegry. Joining in the attack is Silvermane. The barrage is too much for Spider-Man. Luckily, some back-up arrives and not at a moment too soon.

Jackpot, Spider-Boy and Luke Cage enter the field! Will it be enough to win?

Readers see how the good guys make a stand to defeat Masque once and for all. Its’ outcome isn’t cut and dry. While the resolution solves a few lingering plots, there is now a bigger threat at hand. The smoke has cleared. One is left standing. The final image lets readers know that there’s still some unfinished business. It’s a chilling farewell to Gang War that still will send shockwaves through Spider-Man’s life for some time to come.

Wells presents a steady pace into Central Park’s last stand. With Tombstone making the call to pull out early, the focus shifts into Spidey and company overcoming huge odds. It is a bit surprising who the back-up was that swung momentum in the good guys favor. Considering there are two relatively new heroes finding their path, it was a bit odd seeing them as the key factors. Granted, Luke Cage does make up a LOT to balance his trio out.

From here, the issue heads into much of what connects readers with Spider-Man. Spidey’s stand-off with Masque plays right into character. The ending is fitting, along with the final act. The parting pages set up a bigger stage later but concludes all on a solid landing.

Romita and company give the big battle a full send-off. There’s an excellent two page spread early featuring the shift of power with Tombstone leaving. This is matched with another great two-page spread when the cavalry arrives.

Even with their masks on, the final stand-off with Masque and Spider-Man still carries a great deal of emotion behind it. The visuals reflect Spidey’s frustrations and anger with his body language. The final act captures the resolutions of the invested parties. None stand out more than the winner of the war. The closing visual leaves a haunting reminder that the war is over…but not forever.

The battle of Central Park ends with a clear-cut winner in Spidey’s last chapter of the Gang War crossover. Wells puts the emotional weight on Spidey’s back with solid writing. Romita and the team give the issue that “big fight feel” with some memorable visuals. This will be one for all Spidey fans to check out on New Comic Book day.

After being a mistreated bartender at The Falcone-owned Iceberg Lounge, Cobblepot gets on the radar of Batman. With a loose agreement, Cobblepot begins working with the Dark Knight to take down Falcone. Once their deal is done, Cobblepot starts teasing the readers to what his true endgame is? Was it revenge on the crime family who mocked him or was this a long play after all?

This issue begins one year after Falcone was taken out. Penguin is running things in the casino. He asks one of Falcone’s former employees about finding the muscle behind Falcone’s moves. Penguin is given a business card. The gesture is returned with a knife through the neck courtesy of Penguin. Readers see the name on the card as “The Help”.

At this time, a young Jim Gordan answers a call from Penquin addressing the rampant crime in the city. This prompts a call to Batman. The weapon Penguin used to kill is recovered. The chase leads to a confrontation between Bats and Penguin. After some questioning, the suspect shifts away from Penguin onto another target.

Who is the next target on Penguin’s hit list? Readers see how the set-up plays out in the ever-changing movement of the unlikely pair’s journey. The sense of tension never escapes the page. This plays heavily into the closing moments. A shocking event begins which will have readers guessing until the next chapter drops. Just wait until you see that final page!

King excels at showing how layered Cobblepot early days were. Is he playing the long game of working Batman? Does he have plans all his own? The writing dives into the uneasiness of the new partnership. Doubt and suspension linger in the air. This leads readers into seeing a new side of Cobblepot. The shifting of gears continues to be a strong point of this series. With a shocking final page, there will be much to discuss.

Subic steps in for art duties on this story. The vision of Penguin comes off as cunning and misleading. The conversation with him and Batman demonstrates the swings in behavior. This leads into a solid full page image of Penguin stating in the center of Gotham.

The visuals of Penguin running the casino further illustrates what makes him dangerous. The unsettling nature shines through each panel. This all builds towards a show-stopping final full page that will have many fans excited for what’s next.

The secrets behind Cobblepot’s past give a great insight to the ascension in the criminal ranks with this strong issue. King’s writing demonstrates Cobblepot’s maneuvering and deceptions perfectly. Subic Maiolo, and Cowles stage the visuals for an easy win with readers. Just when yo think you have the answers, the final mage changes the questions. Prepare for quite the entertaining issue.

It is no surprise when the creative team behind it is an Eisner winning pair (AFTERLIFT) that is known for the imaginative storytelling.

Readers have followed along as the vampire crew behind an all-night diner have challenged villains, mythology, and the high cost of immortality. Heading into their final chapter, the family risks it all for one of their own. Who will survive the final showdown with the Takers?

Alex, the vampire/“super-hero” who began this journey in issue #1, has been taken away by the Takers. The remaining members of the family track down his whereabouts to the Bermuda Triangle. With Francis (Frankenstein) and GOD by their side, the group ventures to free their family member.

Upon arrival, they are confronted by The Boogeyman. Behind the scenes lurking is Lucifer. He is waiting to have a chat with God about current affairs. Once the family conquers their fears, its full speed ahead into a confrontation with the Boogeyman and his forces.

This issue begins with God and Lucifer discussing the forthcoming battle between them. God has cyphered Lucifer is building his forces via the Supernatural. God challenges him on the plans. God also questions whether they’re on the right path as well.

Meanwhile, the action kicks off with the family (in full superhero costumes) taking it to the Boogeyman. With a lack of fear, the evil forces begin to fade. During this moment, Cynthia and Joy break away to find Alex and Francis, who are still captured.

The captured pair have found a friend in the form of the Yeti. Unfortunately for the trio, their path to escape has come upon a road block. Lazaruk and his “Justice Angels” stand in their way.

Readers watch the magic unfold as the final stand plays out. The tension never slows down building to a fever pitch with time slipping away. An unlikely voice becomes the catalyst for the strongest part of the final act. The emotions run high with one paying an ultimate price. The epilogue provides a superb ending to what has been a phenomenal read since day one. There is much to enjoy with this final chapter.

Zdarsky combines multiple theme for this finale. Questioning fate is one of the bigger elements of the story. The conversation of God, Lucifer and their destiny raise many questions about the paths they’ve chosen. This ties in perfectly with the family’s original challenges. Defying the Takers, the writing has mirrored the defiance of what is considered to be certain fate. It leads to great character moments for Ian, Andrea and Cynthia.

It’s closing pages complete the journey of self-discovery with a quiet moment between two characters. Zdarsky closes out the story with a strong ending fitting of the characters that have stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Loo and Alleyne shift focus to the conversations with the imagery of this book. The use of the white background for God and Lucifer’s talk gave the moment a completely different feel than the other stories going on. It’s a contrast to Alex and Francis being stick in their darkness surroundings. Where the talk bring hope, Alex’s situation has been shrouded with darkness. Readers can connect with the hopelessness of the capture.

Once all the stories start coming together in the latter half, the mood is leveled up with the coloring and lettering. The final stand for one character reflects the noble sacrifice being made. It is also complemented with strong emotional reactions amongst the family. The pain and sorrow in certain characters faces speak volumes. With a parting full page visual to the world of the diner, the story concludes with an enjoyable image. There is no other way the series could part way with readers with other than this shot. The team delivered on some incredible storytelling.

Loo, Alleyne, and Cvetkovic provide a bittersweet farewell with dramatic visuals. It’s closing time for this wildly imaginative tale and a true disservice to your collection not to add this chapter.

Mr. Sinister has always been a problem to the X-Men. In this story, he has become a problem for the entire universe. Ten years in the future, Nathaniel Essex has now ascended on a whole new plain. Essex is Enigma. Xavier failed to stop the rise to power. Left with little options, Xavier seeks to rewrite history.

The plan is simple on paper: Kill Moira McTaggert before she realizes she’s a mutant. With her powers never manifesting, the Krakoan Era never is born. It’s a desperate plan, but so are the times they live in.

This chapter begins Enigma narrating the pasts of notable key players in Mutant kind. A Young Moira. Jean Grey. Cyclops. Xavier himself. Enigma knows what they all mean to his endgame. Xavier’s moves have peaked Enigma’s interests.

Stationed on No-Place X, Xavier holds court to Rachel Summers, Rasputin IV and Cypher. Xavier lets it known that his plan is the only option left. Listening in to the conversation is a captured Mother Righteous. One of the Essex clones, Righteous shrugs off the attempts to save. Xavier answers in kind and never responds.

Readers sit back as Xavier senses the pressure of failure. Righteous’ banter with the heroes only fuels Xavier’s plans. Once the talking stops, the moves begin. The action swings into full throttle. The pace never stops until the final pages.

Once the dust settles, fans watch as two major players are set on a collision course. Who will be the last one standing? The parting images of this chapter will definitely have fans talking. Brace for the start of an epic conclusion in the making.

Gillen leans heavy into Xavier’s desperation. The conversations with Righteous support the extreme levels. Throughout the series, that has been a notable takeaway that continues to grow. There is one great one-liner about “ants and Galactus” that will leave readers caught up in the moment.

The banter with Xavier and Rasputin IV is another strong point to the issue. A conversation takes place that is heart-breaking but reflects the dire times that exist. It’s a contrast to Moira and Nimrod. With the walls caving in, Gillen writes their paranoia splendidly. It’s another key element that balances ut all the big action taking place.

Silva and Curiel present some memorable points in this story. The background narration panels tie in the past and gives a quick refresher into the pages being told. Xavier’s defiance to Righteous boastfulness was an easy connection via their facial reactions.

However, The fight sequences will be the ones most talked about. It’s big action with near-full page imagery. These spectacular visions lead readers right into the final act. With a near full page panel to close with, the art continues to encompassing the “big event” feel and running with it. This leads to all wins for the readers.

The saga of the X-Men’s final stand strives forward with another excellent issue. With Gillen mixing in some touching humor along with the action, the intensity of Charles Xavier shines through. Since its’ debut in 2023, DSTLRY has made waves with its loaded roster of creators and imaginative storytelling. Stemming from The Devil’s Cut to Somna, the brand has pushed the creative boundaries with each venture.

Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here.

The story begins in an Italian church a long time ago. The crucifix hanging above the alter is possessed by a devil. It begins to speak to a woman holding someone burned and deceased at the feet of the sacred ground. The pitch is made: a soul for a life fulfilled with wonder. The woman accepts it. Her name is Clelia.

Fast forward 600 years later. The world is enamored with a mysterious church. It is known as The Order of The New Church of the Triple Crucifix. Their message is going worldwide. It preaches of unity and closeness. However, readers see quickly that there’s a certain figure the masses are more invested in: Clelia.

A mixture of evangelist and pop star, Clelia performs her new single “Kiss of Light.” As she addresses the crowd, she sees a young boy in a wheelchair. With energy shooting out of her eyes, she “heals” the boy and he walks.

After the performance, Clelia sits down for an interview. With the world watching, she gives a standard “perfect” interview. However, in the conversation, it appears her past finally catches her. An image of the burnt woman appears in her mind. Clelica collapses to the floor!

What transpires next is the start of revelations of the angelic pop star’s life. What is she truly? Has the deal she made been worth it?

Readers walk along the highs and lows of fame as Clelia deals with her past in some questionable manners. Will she find her true self or others like Dorothy and Father Lev sway the path. Judging by the final image, Clelia’s problems look to have only scratched the surface.

Andolfo creates a very unique story with Clelia. Seeing the evolution of her character gives readers a deeper sense of the deal she made. Clelia is a person who buys her own hype, but loses herself in the process. The power of fame tests her mental strengths to breaking points.

The dynamic between her and Father Lev is one that leans into many different paths. At points, it seems as one of caring. In others, the controlling presence leaches her spirit to dangerous levels. It fits perfectly with the idea of angels and devils. Once the collapse occurs, Clelia spirals for quite some time. I never seems she regains her footing. Considering the closing pages, Clelia looks to be challenged even further to ascend or fall from grace.

The art encompasses the diversity of the story. The full page image of Cleila agreeing to the deal sends thoughts of danger and blind naivety. Once the pop career beings, it comes across as divine and larger than life. It matches the energy of the lead character superbly.

This is followed by the darkest moment in the book. Once readers see “Bang” and the two page spread involved, it leaves no question about the switch in direction. With the light-hearted coloring driving, the story shifts gears into a surprise final act. It’s a solid blend of emotions mixed in a very complex character.

FINAL POINT: The high price of fame may be too much to bear for Clelia in DSTLRY’s next launch. A darker story hides behind eye-catching art, luring readers into its’ spell. There are many directions where this goes from here, but it will be one fans are sure to be talking about at the LCS.
