Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the start of a major event happening in DC Comics. Since the “Dawn Of DC” has been in full effect, the premier super hero team hasn’t been the Justice League. It’s been the Titans.

Emerging from the “Teen” moniker, the heroes have finally stepped into the spotlight. With a brand new series started in 2023, Nightwing and company have been making some noise at the comic shops. Now poised to be the center of a DCU event, fans are excited to see how things fare.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #1 by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbott ushers in a monster challenge for DC’s standout superhero team. Let’s check out the first chapter and see how things are going.

The story begins with a figure known as Brother Eternity addressing a mass audience watching world wide. His message is that of despair and dire extremes. “The World Is Ending” in his opinion. Readers see the conversation switches to one of hope as members of the Church Of Eternity have ventured into space. The claim is a discovery of refuge on Titan, the moon of Saturn.

Once landed, the crew (known as “Forevernauts”) discover a temple. Under Brother Eternity’s orders, they proceed with mics open. Eternity speaks in a lost language: ancient Tamaranean! The language is very familiar to one noted on-looker: Starfire!

Readers quickly see that the Forvernauts voyage was doomed from the start. With Eternity watching and smiling, an evil has been unleashed. Knowing danger at hand, the Titans make their way to Titan. Once they arrive, they see first hand what has been unleashed.

After making a daring escape from the failed rescue mission, Starfire debriefs the DCU heroes on what she witnessed: The Necrostar! Will the united front of the DCU’s most powerful be able to stop the creature?

With every crucial minute passing, the heroes brace for battle. Readers see one hero rise to the occasion as the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance. However, what happens next, no one will see coming. By the time the final page is viewed, a swift change in direction takes this story into a completely new direction. Brace yourself for impact as the next DCU event has arrived.

Taylor constructs an exhilarating start to the latest DC event. Right from the beginning, the pace moves things along fast enough to impact readers with how dangerous the threat truly is. Tying the Necrostar to a classic DC character throws a different look to the conflict at hand. Once the story moves to the middle act, Taylor takes a risk and it pays off in spades.

Putting the most unlikely Titan as the focal character opens up many avenues to take the story in. The interactions with Batman alone provide great moments. Readers don’t wait long to see how this unfolds. The creative use of powers is an element that a lasting impression. Once things roll into the final act, Taylor brings out multiple surprises that will keep readers guessing. This is great modern storytelling and fans will have much to enjoy with the writing.

Reis, Miki and Anderson paint the visions of a true event with the artwork. The Forevernauts’ arrival on Titan feels epic and the tensions readers will sense instantly. This is capped off with a strong two-page spread showcasing the evil unleashed.

The following image of Starfire addressing the DCU heroes makes a big statement as to where the Titans stand with the fellow heroes. The action visuals elevate the scenes up a few levels as they reflect the “event” feel needed. The emotional impact of the story is another key factor here, especially with Abbott’s lettering. The art team delivers a personal moment between two Titans than amplifies later in the story. With multiple full page panels mixed in, the issue has much that will capture fans attention, right to the shocking final visual.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The premier DC superhero team strongly steps up to embrace the spotlight in DC’s next big event. With Taylor’s creative writing lays a strong foundation while Reis, Miki, Anderson and Abbott give their excellent finishing touches to lock readers in for what looks to be one story that no one will want to miss!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are checking out an imaginative tale told in a galaxy far, far away courtesy of Marvel Comics! Since its’ debut on Disney Plus in September of 2021, Star Wars: Visions has given fans new perspectives and creativity in storytelling. Allowing diverse creators to bring unique approaches to the mythos has been nothing but a success. With two critically praised series, it has breathed new life into an already successful franchise.

Along with the animated series, the brand has made the transition to comic form with Star Wars: Visions by Takashi Okazaki in 2022. The brand is now returning with an all new story with one of the biggest and innovative creators at the helm.

The issue begins with a great introduction page explaining the major players of Kako (a “rebel” to Ankok and Sith descendant), Popo (a resident in Ankok’s territory), Gel (Kako’s android partner) and Tata (An Ankok advocate).

In the wake of a Sith Lord’s demise, a cult has risen with hopes of a new era centered around Ankok. As the followers have grown, some question the true intentions of the powerful figure.

The story begins with mysterious followers draped in red walking towards a guarded compound. Inside a figure is sitting on a throne at the top of the altar of worship. Once the red sun aligns itself through the compound opening, it shifts colors to black. Readers see how this fuels the figure sitting on their throne. This figure is Ankok.

With Tata serving as a guide, Ankok’s influence generates into her followers. Two in the crowd look with disbelief as the rest of the crowd disperses. They are Kako and Gel. as they head into town, the pair comes across Popo. The interaction is brief but leads Popo to follow the pair. Once on the outskirts of town, readers see a moment with Kako that sets in motion a plan to expose Ankok’s truths once and for all.

How does the gamble pay off? The moments following show a test of will as Kako takes the plan right to Ankok’s altar. The action picks up as the struggle becomes overwhelming. The outcome is sure to leave fans on the edge of their seats. This all builds towards a final image that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Momoko brings a vivid and unforgettable tale to life within these pages. From the initial stages, Ankok is menacing and intimidating right from the full page panel.

The followers’ rection to seeing this “god” is frightening of the power she possesses on them. This plays in contrast to Kako, who’s ever defiant of believing in what she is claiming.

The turning point in the story is the quiet moment involving Kako. Momoko gives enough insight to the readers without fully tipping her hand to what’s next. The final confrontation is set up perfectly will well-set pacing.

The visuals are breathtaking as the journey into the truth takes flight. Never does any panel lack the tension and excitement of the moments unfolding. Its’ conclusion will leave readers with many emotions but all will leave readers very pleased for this experience.

Through the innovative eyes of Peach Momoko, the world of Star Wars is gifted a story of epic proportions. With mind-blowing visuals to lift Kako’s plan of discovering truth, This is one issue not to pass on for New Comic Book Day!

For this entry, we have arrived at the penultimate issue of the current story arc from an award winning series. Ever since its’ BOOM! STUDIOS debut, the saga of Erica Slaughter has entranced readers with its powerful storytelling and chilling terror. Racking up honor after honor, the series is poised (post SAG strike) to make a huge splash on Netflix. In the meantime, comic book readers are treated to a deeply intense tale that is poised to combust!

Tribulation, New Mexico has been the epicenter of the latest arc. With a family being violently murdered by the Duplicitype (who now has taken the form of a certain monster hunter), the lone survivor, Gabi, has been under the custody of Riqui. With a growing body count, Erica Slaughter has re-emerged from being off the grid to end the killings.

Her return hasn’t gone unnoticed as the Order Of St. George has unfinished business with her. They have unleashed the deadly force of nature known as Cutter to eliminate her. With personal attacks breaking her like the death of Big Gary, readers have seen why Erica is a character that has won fans over. Through this fire, Erica remains standing and poised to finally end the evil once and for all.

This issue opens with Erica practicing riding a horse. Erica needs to strike from a distance to kill the Duplicate. Riqui and Erica have a tense conversation knowing what is about to unfold. With poisoned arrows and bow ready, Erica is ready. Riqui has doubts.

While this is happening, Gabi is inside the secluded ranch where the three are hiding. Unfortunately, someone else has found them: CUTTER! As Gabi screams, the monster starts approaching from up the road! The tension is so heavy as reader brace to a fight that truly feels grave. What will Erica do? The pace speeds up to an absolute jaw-dropping final panel. Brace for impact because the drama hits the wall hard with an unforgettable issue!

Nobody does slow build drama better than Tynion. Nobody. this might sound like a broken record at this stage but WOW, the structure of this issue alone is amazing! The conversation between Erica and Riqui plays off as a final goodbye. The feelings are doubt and struggle. This adds so much to the eventual moment of the fight.

The appearance of Cutter is fantastic as she strikes in such a manner that makes her a villain you love to hate. The pacing ramps into high gear once she appears and never looks back. readers can’t help but be locked in and be floored at the closing moments. If there was any question of why this series gets so much hype, read this issue.

Dell’edera and Muerto craft the “calm before the storm” with poise. The opening sequence seems peaceful but filled with tensions. The mannerisms of both Erica and Riqui do not seem confident but they press forward. The panels where Cutter strikes hit readers with intense danger. This is upstaged (briefly) with a full page shot of the monster/Erica combo walking towards the ranch. The art depicts the franticness of events with subtle glee from Cutter looming. The ending panels will leave readers in pause and the wait for next issue will be extremely tough. What an issue!

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The slow build pays off huge as a showdown months in the making explodes off the pages of an undeniable issue. Tynion, Dell’edera and the team impact readers with superb writing and intense art to send Erica Slaughter into her gravest challenge yet. This is an absolute must buy on New Comic Book Day!

WONDER WOMAN #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the return of one of DC Comics’ Trinity Characters. In their illustrious history, there has been many heroes of legend but three have stood above the rest: Superman, Batman and Princess Diana of Themyscira otherwise known as Wonder Woman!

Since debuting in ALL-STAR COMICS #8 in 1941, the adventures of Diana Prince have become that of legend amongst comic readers. Now poised to start a new chapter under the “Dawn Of DC” banner, there is a ton of buzz surrounding her latest saga due to the talented creative team behind it.

WONDER WOMAN #1 by Tom King (Mr. Miracle), Daniel Sampere (ACTION COMICS), Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles kicks off a brand new story that is sure to be one fans will be talking about at the LCS this week. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on, shall we?

The issue begins in West Billings, Montana with a simple game of Pool at a bar. The narration leads readers to think that an event has already happened. In the moment, there is some unwelcomed banter amongst patrons. The end result is an Amazonian is smashing a disrespectful male head-first thru the table.

As more male patrons of the bar interject themselves into the conflict, the end result leaves them no reward. When the smoke has cleared, nineteen males are dead inside the bar.

The news media is reflecting the public’s shock about this attack. Some are putting a spin on the events. Suddenly, a man’s phone gets a message that interrupts his meeting with two other individuals. When leaving the meeting, the mysterious figure kills the two businessmen after revealing he was working undercover to expose them. With the bodies laying dead and a room full of scared patrons, the man simply walks up to the counter and leaves his business card to give to the authorities. His name is Sgt. Steel

Steel is now put in charge of a unit known as the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.). AXE is the result of the Congress-passed Amazon Safety Act, which bans Amazons from being inside U.S. Borders.

Readers will need to brace for the viciousness of Steele and his unit. What transpires next will send shockwaves through the DCU. These actions don’t go unanswered as there is someone who has a very vested interest in discovering the truth and the U.S. might not be ready for what Hell she will bring when she strikes. If that is not enough, just wait for the final moments to add more fuel on an already enraged fire!

King constructs such a multi-layered conflict in this opening issue. The idea of the Amazons being banned from the United States is a fantastic twist. With Diana being such a popular and respected public figure, the new stat quo brings forth how will the people now look at Diana after Congress makes their move. King gives some insight to this, but readers can expect the payoff to be later in this series. The question ultimately becomes where will they ultimately side: Diana or the Government?

Steel proves to be a solid foil to what Diana is up against. His blind loyalty is a reflection of the government’s opinions as they push an agenda forward. This is brought to terrifying light on their initial move. The pace nicely builds the tension before the eventual meeting of opposing forces. The action hits when it graces the story but its’ fallout plays a bigger factor. the closing moments throw everything on its’ head as another piece is added to an already impressive puzzle.

Sampere brings this story to life with easy and anxiousness as things swiftly change. The initial outing in the bar paints a vivid picture of the melee that transpired. Excellent full-page panel to light the fuse for this portion. Also noteworthy is the use of the 9-panel page for when the reporters come into the story. Sampere also adds much emotion to the supporting cast of Steel’s attack.

The mannerisms range from scared, frightened to Steel’s maniacal enjoyment of what is happening. The mood changes later as Steel sees exactly who he’s up against as a ill page stand-out visual welcomes that character to the party. The closing moments throw a swerve into where things are heading with a parting image to close out a strong debut chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Mixing in the superhero world with political conspiracies brings forth a grave challenge to Princess Diana of Themyscira. Through King’s superb writing, the visuals from Sampere and Morey paint a fractured and dangerous new world with one character fighting for justice against insurmountable odds. The hype is completely justified on what is happening within these pages. Don’t miss out on NCBD!

SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new addition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re following the next chapter from a brand-new series from Image Comics that more people need to be talking about. THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone debut mixing in elements of the Jack Kirby style of storytelling with modern superhero themes. With all the groundwork being laid last issue, the future looks very bright for this series. Let’s take a closer look and see how things pan out in the second issue, shall we?

Grant Garrison isn’t your average high school student. After being found lost with amnesia, Garrison takes a shot trying to fit in. All the while, there are forces from outside of Earth looking for a weapon known as “Sharsrum”, which could spell doom for the entire universe.

During the day of school, the normal drama is cut short after a meteor crashes into Kirby High school. Garrison wakes up to find he's survived the crash with Jen, a fellow student. Everyone else has gone away. In it's wake, an unknown creature stands.

Garrison seems unready for what's next, but he bonds with an object, he transforms into something more than human. After defeating the creature, Grant finds out it was Principal Murray. With a mystery unfolding and dangerous figures on the hunt, Grant’s life will never be the same.

The next chapter kicks off with a recap of previous events. Readers find out that those involved have various levels of changes if they survived. Grant and Jen attend the mass burial for those who didn’t survive the meteor attack.

During the ceremony, the pair notice someone with a bodyguard walking around. She is revealed to be Angela Rizni, daughter of Don Rizni from the Techno Mafia. Angela is ushered away by her Uncle and isolated from her friends. At her home (under his protection), Angela escapes to clear her head. Someone else with the same idea is Starstrom, who crosses paths with her. All the while, something else is unfolding. Something ….Supernatural.

Readers find out that something has triggered ZOMBIES to come up from the ground! What or who caused this? Can Starstorm handle another threat? Things move pretty fast as events play out. The final moments give a few things to ponder as it seems that Starstorm might be just the start of powered beings in this universe.

BREAKDOWN: Craig mixes a few things into the overall picture that create a fun, but at times confusing story. Kudos on mixing in a famous line from “The Crow.” Angela’s plotline involving her friends seemed sudden in their reveals. Instead of diving in more to Starstorm’s own beginning, the addition of more powered characters takes away that connecting time but leaves the door open for expanding on a universe. Being only two issues in, there is still much clouded in suspense.

Craig never loses the superhero elements that shined in the first issue. The throwback feel still works, even with all the new names involved. The zombie portion of the book was a fun mix and something unexpected. Events moved at a brisk pace but with such a bigger cast now, where things head now is literally anyone’s guess following the final page.

The introduction of the Digital mafia was a solid display, giving enough but not diving in too much. The same can be said for the flashbacks of Angela’s parents. Craig gives a brief but effective origin to Angela. The interactions with Grant came off well and readers can easily pick up on the friendship forming. The zombies really popped off the panels with a subtle retro feel to them. The faceoff with Angela and her uncle stands out as well with the expressions showing the shift in their stat quo. The final full page panel looks to be one readers will remember as a possible start to growing an already budding universe.

FINAL POINT: 7.5 OUT OF 10

The saga of Starstorm dips away from focusing on the main character to introduce some possible major players into the mix. Readers will enjoy the throwback feel of this story as it combines many elements with its’ blossoming origin. Craig and Finestone bring the always fun dynamic of zombies into the fold as the gear shift will be entertaining to fans that enjoy the superhero genre.

BEATRIX ROSE: VIGILANTE #3 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, The latest adventure of Mark Dawson’s wildly popular assassin continues to ramp up its’ story on Comixology Originals. Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #3 by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte continues Rose’s latest troubles with a mysterious companion now along for the ride. With more danger surrounding them, let’s not waste another second and jump right into a deep dive on this issue, shall we?

Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #3 - On Sale September 20th

The latest installment of Beatrix Rose’s saga has been quite the captivating one. Rose has re-emerged after being betrayed by her own British intelligence team in Japan. Now working freelance for the Triad to hunt down the killer known as “Yaomo” or “Demon,” Rose has become locked in on completing her assignment no matter what. The previous run-ins with Yaomo have not gone in her favor. At the end of the last issue, Rose faked Yaomo’s death to help her escape. It was a drastic change in events but Rose saw a lot of her own young daughter in Yaomo which caused Rose to re-assess. With the repercussions of her actions coming, Rose and Yaomo now have a bigger target on both of their heads.

This issue opens up with an investigation into the apparent death of Yaomo. Wit no body being discovered, the Triad has their doubts of what has happened and immediately begin to look in the direction of Beatrix Rose. Meanwhile, Beatrix and Yaomo escape to a safe house to make plans for what their next moves are. During this exchange, Yaomo has to be helped with dealing with a stab wound….caused by Beatrix. In tending to the wound, Yaomo opens up (not without some great back and forth tension) about why she is on a deadly mission versus the Triad. Readers get a great insight to the character and also get a healthy does of action before closing out the book with a final parting shot to hype the next chapter.

The emotional layers of Beatrix Rose really shine thru this issue. Phillips walks the readers thru Rose’s complex situation without losing track of the overall mission at hand. Protecting Yaomo now fills a void from losing her family. Seeing the lengths she goes to save and help Yaomo is a strong point to this chapter. Even with the more emotional points, the story NEVER loses its’ espionage feel. Take the moment with Rose attending to Yaomo’s stab wound for prime example. Phillips also writes great narration from Rose’s perspective to guide the readers thru what she’s seeing. This is anything but an ordinary spy tale and one you simply can not miss.

Favoccia creates a solid balance of drama and action with this issue. Seeing Yaomo’s backstory come to life is one readers can fully grasp her motivations around. Rose’s mannerisms in dealing with helping Yaomo stand out as well. Witnessing how Rose flips from protector to spy in the course of a few panels (see the wound/gun panels) is very noteworthy. The action stands out as it has from the first issue. Even with this being more of a dramatic issue than the previous two (imo), it still carries that same momentum right up to the last page.

Overall, The adventures of Beatrix Rose continue to be a must-read with this latest entry. Phillips, Favoccia & the team present another fantastic balance of high action and drama that readers simply can’t put down. Make sure to check this book out on Comixology this week.

CANARY #2 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS/BEST JACKETT PRESS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry, we’re continuing to check out one of the next wave of books from Scott Snyder via Best Jackett Press for Comixology Originals. One of those books was “Canary”, which gave readers an absolute hit with the introduction of Marshall Holt and his investigation into something sinister in 1891 Utah. The book feels like a horror western saga and plays heaving into the latest issue. Canary #2 by Snyder, Dan Panosian, Richard Starkings and Will Dennis moves the story forward with another electrifying chapter. Let’s not waste anymore time and take a deeper look at this book, shall we?

The story of Marshall Holt thus far has been very captivating. With a short time left before retiring, he investigates a brutal murder of a school teacher by a seemingly "innocent” boy. Holt finds out there might be more to this killing than meets the eye. After bringing him in, Holt finds out more bizarre circumstances where “normal” people are committing these deadly attacks. Holt takes a lead to track down a contact with a possible theory, all roads lead towards a haunting place: Canary. Holt reluctantly goes but readers see a flashback sequence where Holt sought out to arrest Hyrum Tell, a killer who’s encounter with Holt has left the lawman rattled when “Canary” is brought up.

This issue picks up where readers see more of the initial encounter between Holt and Tell. Once the flashback is over, Holt is en route to meet Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), a rock doctor who might have a theory connecting all these crimes. The theory centers around the Canary Mine. Upon their arrival at the Canary depot, the pair is treated with some hospitality form Mayor Gem, who gives off a very unique energy pertaining to the case at hand. Readers get more insight to what really happened in the Canary mine that plays a big part of the story going on within these pages. However, that takes a step back when Holt and Edwards arrive at “The Gem of The Utah Hills”, Canary. Readers get to meet some of the town’s most noteworthy characters, but none stand out more than Mabel Warren. What is her connection to this case? Readers will find out that answer plus have some great discussions after a final page sets the pace for the next issue perfectly.

Snyder delves more into what composes Azrael William Holt without slowing down too much of the overall story. The flashback sequence during the Mayor’s retelling of Holt’ novel moments connects to readers extremely well. The sequence with Holt and Tell truly translate into a battle of good and evil that fits in perfectly to this story. Once he gets to Canary and starts interacting with Edwards and Warren, Holt starts lowering his guards and connecting on a more personal level than we’ve seen thus far. His complexity of balancing what happened prior in Canary is a very big point of his character. Seeing a break here with what’s to come made for a well-rounded issue.

Panosian’s art crushes this issue. This western horror saga continues to amaze with it’s incredible visuals. The imagery involving the flashback/novel retelling is haunting and adds to the effectiveness of Tell as the main protagonist. Without spoiling, there’s a moment in the book when Holt makes a gruesome discovery after encountering Tell. Panosioan drives the horror factor home with a very few panels. It’s balanced out with moments meeting the residents of Canary and the mysterious Mabel Warren. Readers will have to make their own judgements on her character, but her mannerisms pop out due to the amazing artwork here.

Overall, Canary #2 builds the drama and slowly peels back the layers of the lead character with another can’t miss read. Snyder, Panosian, and their team give the readers excellent storytelling & art to showcase Marshall Holt’s struggle to solve the mystery without losing himself in the process. Don’t miss grabbing this over at Comixology this week.

The story picks up where Kay and Mona are rescued by the police in the morning after spending the night in an abandon house. The police are trying to figure out what (if anything) makes sense of the story that they are telling. How can they explain Mona’s past and being from another world where it seems as shes hunted? However, a new character enters the story that might change everything. William Quilliam, a money broker who oversees the property shows up. At first, it seems as he’s on the up and up, but once readers see a few moments later, there are some red flags raised via his facial expression.

From here, Kay struggles to deal with Mona being turned over to social services. Once she goes back to find Mona, there is more information revealed that proves she is anything but ordinary. From here, the pair begin to try figuring out what has happened. Unfortunately for them, other forces are at play. can the pair survive long enough to figure out this mystery? And where does the character of Quilliam fit into this puzzles? Readers will have to read and make their own conclusions.

Diggle continues to build off off a soild debut with this issue. Kay’s story begins to shift gears as she becomes more connected with Mona. Seeing how their story has grown in such a short time has been a big win for this series. The addition of Quilliam adds another dynamic to this book. It’s very early in this story to figure out everything about him but there’s enough in this issue to make readers keep focused on him as this book progresses. Very good closing sequence to end the issue on.

Brokenshire does another fantastic job on bringing this world to life. Balancing out the grounded reality with the supernatural elements i presented with no problems. When the mystic moments happen, they’re big events. When the quieter conversation happen, they still translate to the reader as impactful. Readers are in for a real treat with the imagery they will see in this issue. Very cool final panels to close out on.

Overall, Cold Iron #2 continues to build it’s blend of reality and supernatural with a well crafted story. The saga of Kay and Mona grows with some very grounded moments only to shift into the realm of fantasy with ease. This book is one to keep an eye on when you’re checking out Comixology this week.

Since his re-emergence, Peter Stanchek has been the center of a LOT of attention. Waking up with no memory and trying to stay alive, Peter connects with Cici and Young Ago, fellow Psiots that are standing up to authorities trying to hold back the people. With a new found sense of purpose, Stanchek now uses his powers to be a symbol off hope. However, there is a force at play that don’t want to see him succeed. That force is The Renegade, who as we’ve found out thru this series is the “evil” side of Stanchek. This goes to show a fraction at how powerful the Harbinger is: He literally rewired his own brain! Unfortunately, this corrupt version of the Harbinger doesn’t want peace and hope .He wants to watch the world burn.

With Stanchek’s return, readers did also see a return of a fan favorite of the Valiant Universe: Faith aka Zephyr. With their past, it was only a matter of time until she confronted her old “friend”. As Faith enters the fray, the Renegade makes his moves well known. The Renegade starts activating Psiots and preying on their pain and fears. While trying to stop the Renegade, our hero is shot IN THE HEAD by the assassin Blam. This isn’t a bait and switch moment. Peter’s brains are literally leaking all over the street! After some “motivation” from Ago while unconscious, Peter literally heals his own head wound?! Regrouped and refocused (with CiCi now activated in her powers), The Harbinger leads his team against the Renegade and his army of corrupt Psiots with the fate of Psiot City in the balance.

Starting this issue off is our hero leading his team directly into battle. Readers get a glimpse of a solid showcase of what this “team” can do. There is also an interaction between Faith and Blam that leaves a thought of more interactions between them are coming. However, fans see the battle that they’ve been waiting for. It delivers on tying everything back to where we started this series: “Who Is Peter Stanchek”? The conclusion is a fitting one and leaves some questions on can Peter “Be Better”?

Kelly & Lanzing close out this adventure on a very strong note with leaving more questions on the future of the Harbinger. Their run has been based on the theory of can Peter “Be Better”? From where readers witnessed his start to now, the answer is a resounding YES. This latest story has been one of redemption at the cost of fixing his broken soul. Their creative way of demonstrating Stanchek’s powers is one that I will personally miss from this book. The conclusion of the final battle almost felt anti-climactic until you go back and see what the meaning behind it was. To be better, Peter has to forgive himself and give himself another chance. It’s creative and left some doors open on the eventual return.

As for the art, Rodriguez goes back to the strong mental imagery of issue #1 and shows readers that the true battle was never of physical power, but that of mental will. There is an excellent back-to-back 2 page spreads where Peter falls into water that explains this perfectly. The moments feel big between these two. The ending visual of the battle resonates to the rest of the characters of the book. It l leave readers with a varying opinion as previously mentioned until they really break down what happened in this conclusion. The final panel shot is a very fitting one to cap this current volume off on.

Overall, The Harbinger #8 closes the latest saga of Peter Stanchek off with strong writing & amazing artwork. The creative team of Kelly, Lanzing & Rodrigeuz crafted a compelling tale of self discovery and self-closure all while balancing the unpredictable world of one of Valiant’s most powerful beings all the while. Personally when (and I can’t stress “when” instead of “if” enough, especially with a movie in development. ) we see the Harbinger return, the same creative team is back on the book. Their energy to the character was a fresh & welcomed take.

The answer of “Who Is Peter Stanchek” is answered while seeing a new status quo established for Psiot City when readers will see him next. Make a point to get to your local comic shop and get caught up on this latest adventure.

Editor note: you KNOW it’s gonna be a great issue when it kicks off with some Blue Oyster Cult “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” playing on the first panel! LETS’ GO!!!!!!

Grim centers around a reaper by the name of Jessica Harrow. Her job: guiding the recently departed into the next phase of the afterlife. For this assignment, she’s to escort Bryan Michael Andrews on that journey. Bryan just died in a drunk driving accident seeing his ex, Abigail. From here, Jessica becomes his guide into his next phase. Bryan tries sparking conversation with Jessica asking a million questions about what’s next with very little answers to his liking.

When the table is turned on Jessica’s past, she doesn’t have much answers. Their journey comes to an end when they arrive at “the end of the line”. This case is closed so it seems until Jessica notices that something is missing. From there, her story takes a very unexpected turn that will cause some issues and raise more questions than she’s ready to answer….or find out the truth about.

Excellent first issue. Phillips writes a very dynamic character in Jessica Harrow. Readers will be locked in on her story of mystery as she’s more of an enigma than the questions about the afterlife she was asked. The afterlife voyage and destination was an interesting creation for this story. It had the usual dark elements mixed in with some slight light-hearted moments. It served as a good backdrop to the main characters here. As for the story, seeing how this simple “delivery” went awry made for a fun adventure with a solid cliffhanger for the lead going into issue #2.

Flaviano did an incredible job on art duties. Very creative way for the song lyrics in the beginning to appear as floating spirits much like Bryan was a spirit himself. The voyage to the afterlife served up great visuals as did the “retrieval mission” & Jessica’s “reaction” to what was happening there. Seeing her break from being serious about her mission and not showing any emotion to letting loose near the end will keep readers engaged for the next chapter of this book. Interesting final page as well.

Overall, Grim #1 takes readers on a wild trip through the afterlife that raises more questions than answers. This is not a bad thing as the book showcases great storytelling & eye catching art to keep the story of Jessica Harrow one to keep an eye one. Don’t fear the reaper here! The story of these three individuals who proves no good deed goes unpunished has gone into some intriguing directions. After acquiring a cell phone for with some sensitive information on it, the trio of Lu, Lis and Leco have become involved with a political conspiracy involving an upcoming election. Using this info, they have tipped off Neto, a candidate in that election about what is planned against him. By taking that shot, there are individuals involved now that want to end this “problem” once and for all.

This issue kicks off with Neto addressing the public about this information. Zé Fofinho has been assigned to silence the problem and starts tracking down the cell phone holders. After last issue, Zé Fofinho’s presence is even more menacing. Our heroes now have to evade and escape Zé Fofinho but that’s easier said than done. All the while Lis makes a big move of her own. Will she be able to succeed? And there’s a cliffhanger ending that will change the direction of the story nearing its’ conclusion.

Scavone speeds up the drama with this issue. With Zé Fofinho now on the trail of our trio, readers are witnessing first hand the gravity of their actions. How Zé Fofinho goes about his work is another layer to what steps he’s willing to take to eliminate the problem. The side story with Lis is one to keep eyes on as it could be the key to getting Neto elected. Pacing was very well as all the major players had big moments in this book. Now hitting the home stretch, the final page is going to set the tone for the remainder of the book.

Cruz continues strong work on this book. The majority of the issue is focused on Zé Fofinho but it works to really show how dedicated he is to complete his mission. Great work on showing his emotions with the twists and turns that happen here. There was some excellent chase scenes here as well. Very good last page for a cliffhanger ending.

Overall, Red Tag #3 really speeds up the drama as all the major players have made their moves in this issue. With Zé Fofinho taking the lead for this issue, our trio of heroes need to somehow find a way to stay alive with a dangerous foe making his first moves. For this edition, we’re checking out the conclusion of one of the best horror comics on the market: Night Of The Ghoul #6 by Scott Snyder, Francesco Francavilla & Andworld Design for Comixology Originals. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: The Comixology Originals line is one of the best investments you can make as a comic fan. Some of the best storytelling in the medium is happening here.

If you’re new to this story, Night Of The Ghoul centers around Forest Innman, a film studio worker who has come across the long lost remains of the film “Night Of The Ghoul”. With this piece of history in hand & son along for the ride, Innman tracks down the director of the movie, T. F. Merritt at a nursing home under a different name. Innman’s curiosity of this film might be more than he bargained for as Merritt starts to unveil the mystery about this film thought destroyed in a movie studio in 1946. Is Innman ready for the truth behind “The Greatest Horror Movie of All Time”?

Readers find that answer out quickly as this tale has so many incredible twists and turns that need to be read to fully appreciate. Now at the conclusion, let’s see how this epic concludes, shall we?

Innman & Merritt have made an escape from the nursing home & the insanity happening there. With time running out on his life, Merritt makes a last request to Innman to take him to the studio where it all begin in 1946. With this intention, Merritt prepares to finish the story for the movie’s biggest fan. As the movie starts playing it’s final act, it becomes clear that the movie being thought destroyed should have stayed dead. Readers will bear witness to the true ending of “Night Of The Ghoul” & what really happened on that fateful night with the studio fire.

Even with this mild spoiler warning, readers will not be ready for the final twists that happen in these pages. I’m keeping details a bit vague for this review because when I read this issue, I kept saying “HOLY ****!” and feel you, the reader, should have those moments to make with any tampering of judgement. The story has been such a fantastic read that heading into the finale, one would hope it doesn’t drop off. Rest assured, you won’t be disappointed with the events happening within this issue.

All the questions that have been asked since the beginning of the first issue will be answered without any confusion. The impact of these reveals will hit all the marks with fans. It literally is a roller-coaster of emotions when seeing how Innman’s quest of curiosity ends. This issue is perfectly crafted that once finished, you know you will have truly read something special with this story.

Snyder captures everything you love about horror with this book. Packing this story with so much drama, suspense and frightening moments was no easy task. However, it helps with strong lead figures to make that become a reality. The character of Forrest Innman brings to life the definition of there are some mysteries should be left close forever. Innman is one who connects to the audience easily for his harmless actions, but once the story ramps up, finds out he’s in way over his head. The complexity of TF Merritt is another strong point to this book. Merritt is a perfect counter to Innman. Even from the beginning, his story is not so cut and dry. The conflict of the truth behind the film does a nice slow burn until the ending but never loses the readers attention. Every element of the pacing of this story works.

Francavilla absolutely gives this book fantastic imagery throughout the story. Whether it’s the flashbacks to 1918, The infamous studio fire in ‘46 or present day, Francavilla sets up panels to make the big moments jump out at the reader. The use of the “vintage” color tones for the past sequences was a great touch throughout these issues. Look at the time Innman and Merritt spend in the studio during this final issue for a prime example. When Merritt asks “please play my movie” sends shivers up the spine because of how Merritt’s body language gives off the inevitable ending of his story. There is a lot of crazy sequences that unfold to get here but when the story needs that extra boost, the art raises it to a whole other level.

Overall, Night Of The Ghoul #6 is an absolute masterpiece! Snyder’s writing & Francavilla’s art bring a classic horror tale to modern times without losing any details along the way. Even if horror is not your go-to genre of comics, give this book a read. It’s a complete package of what a great comic is. Highly recommended for all comic readers. Sign up ASAP on Comixology & don’t miss this story.

Peter’s “old friend” Faith made a big return at the last issue. From the start, readers get to see their quick catch-up since the whole world is looking for Stanchek since he returned on the scene. After following Stanchek back to Psiot City, Faith sees first hand of what our hero is doing. There’s a bit of a “celebrity” vibe when Faith arrives and it gives the issue a nice break from the storyline. Readers do she decide to help him. It’s a much needed help but is it too late?

The strongest point of this issue when Young Ago is talking to a recovering Baxter about the events of last issue. Where the Harbinger represents hope, readers now see his impact on the team he’s been setting up here. However, when the Renegade shows up, all bets are off about what is going to be the inevitable showdown. he stakes are now raised yet again! Readers also see another glimpse of the Harbinger’s next threat (if he should survive the latest mission) or is that battle already done. Shocking final page!

Kelly & Lanzing work their magic yet again. the back and forth with Faith & Harbinger is a great conversation esp. with their history. Faith being ever the optimist balances off Stanchek great. The Young Ago/Baxter talk also delivered on some great character moments. Readers can start seeing the effect the Harbinger is having on those around him. Readers also have to be excited about the dramatic entrance of te Renegade here as well. The moment felt big and really picked up the pace of the story. No spoilers but….WOW….that final page!

Rodriguez delivers on the strong work known with this series. The Renegade’s entrance alone was incredible. It made the scene feel that much more impactful. Seeing how he set forth his plans in motion was very well done. The imagery made the moments more intense and with good reason. There’s something about how Rodriguez draws this character that captures reader’s attention and doesn’t let go. There’s only one thing that upstaged it and that was the final page. No spoilers here on that but that’s one way to leave an exclamation point on this issue!

On this edition, we’re taking a look at the latest issue of one of my favorite series out right now. If you haven’t checked out everything Scott Snyder has been doing on the Comixology Originals line via Best Jackett Press with We Have Demons (with Greg Capullo On Sale via print for the first time by Dark Horse Comics March 23rd ) & Night Of The Ghoul (with Francesco Francavilla), you are missing out on some of the best comics out there. Clear is no exception. Clear #5 by Scott Snyder, Francis Manapul & Andworld Designs (Comixology Originals) has been delivering on a crazy, futuristic thriller that hasn’t let up since issue 1. Let’s not waste anymore time and jump right into this story, shall we?

The story centers around Detective Sam Dunes. Being a cop in a future San Francisco in 2052 is not easy. The world has been completely re-invented from the use of “Veils". Veils allow a user to re-create their reality in the vision of what they want. Want to exist in a historic time period? Sure. Want to change an outcome of something in the past? Possible. All for the right price as veils are big business. With the ability to see the world as any vision you want, what would you choose? Dunes isn’t someone who subscribes to this philosophy. Dunes would rather see “Clear” & see the world for what it is. However, when the death of his love, Kendra appears not to be what it seems, Dunes investigates what happened.

From there, the story of her death is much like the world existing to the readers: not what it appears to be at all. For Dunes, he’s challenged with continuing this quest for answers while questioning himself on why even try fighting what the world has become. There is a great panel in issue #1 when he’s staring into his helmet reflection saying “Why Bother” to illustrate that point. The story has taken it’s fair shares of twists and turns that have made this series such an incredible read. When we arrive to issue #5, things are definitely moving fast.

Dunes takes a dive into the water much like Kendra did to avoid being captured by Police for something he did not do. The similarities stop there as Dunes is rescued by a mysterious figure known as The Widow that helps to answer some of the questions he has been asking. It’s a great back and forth with these two characters as readers get some clarity themselves on what motivations are with this story. There are some BIG revelations from the Widow here that need to be read and not spoiled. The final page will have readers excited to see how this will all end next issue.

If you’ve listened to the ODPHpod, you know how much of a fan I am of Snyder’s work. Clear is presented in such a unique take that it really stands out from other books. The question of how much technology has altered the way we see the world is a driving point to this series. Dunes’ mission of addressing this “problem” is one that’s not so cut and dry. Snyder never let up from this idea and it pays off here. After the true revelation of “Clear” is made, it actually gives some thought on understanding of Dunes & what he feels he needs to do. Snyder crafts this very complex story with some great thought provoking moments. By the time we’re at the end of this issue, Dunes is ready to close this story out, for better or worse in his eyes or others.

This story is great but without Manapul & Designs on this book, I’m not sure if I could see someone else doing the illustrations here. Visually alone, it’s one of the best books you’ll see at Comixology. Manapul brought the futuristic sci-fi element right to the forefront. San Francisco felt like a whole new world and with all the characters involved. This really shines thru with the black & white vs. color panels in this book to represent what is “clear” and what is not. Even the visuals of the Widow really gave this character a distinct energy that carried thru her conversation with Dunes. There has been so many incredible images coming from this book that the art team needs all the accolades it can get. The future has rarely looked this impressive.

Overall, Clear #5 sets up a big ending to an incredible story. Snyder, Manapul and Design have absolutely crushed this book right out of the gate. Snyder has created a simple murder mystery and had it evolve into a whole different story that never lets go. Manapul does some of his best work & presents a unique version of the future with tying in so many elements of the past. Highest possible recommendation.
