The chapter begins with Damian Wayne checking in on his “father”. However, readers know all too well this is not Bruce Wayne. This is FAILSAFE, an unstoppable version of Batman with Zur-En-Arh as its’ personality.

Batman has cracked into every electronic device in Gotham City. This serves as fuel to his twisted version of protecting the citizens. Damian is all too excited to be reconnecting with his dad on their missons. The feelings aren’t mutual as Failsafe brushes them off. Something has drawn the machines attention away….

Readers find out that the reason is Gotham’s new Police Commissioner. His name is VANDAL SAVAGE! Savage addresses the city. A protester takes aim and fires a gunshot. Batman jumps in front and subdues the attacker. Savage and Batman have a public stand-off with the world watching.

One of those people: Amanda Waller. Waller sees the big picture. How does this Batman fit into her plans? And what of Bruce Wayne? On the run and outmatched by his own creation, Wayne takes things back to basics as he tries reclaiming his identity.

Wayne gets a familiar assistant to help on his new plan. Timing couldn’t be better. Waller is making moves that only spell disaster for Batman. With Failsafe growing its’ strength every day, the final image gives some hope that all might not be lost. Buckle in as things are about to get moving very, very fast.

Zdarsky juggles around many multiple personalities in this chapter. The addition of Amanda Waller elevates Failsafe’s impact on Gotham. Knowing that “Absolute Power” is a short time away, their conversation comes off as a moment that lights the match for a bigger explosion. Failsafe’s reactions to their talk reflects Batman’s demeanor which is no stranger to Waller. How this ultimately plays out should be exciting.

Bruce’s portion of the story tells a few themes. The overall isolation he puts himself through carries a heavy weight. Seeing the reluctance for help ties back into how Bats feels he is the only option to save the day. Zdarsky provides a needed reset with who joins Bat’s cause. Their interactions prove to be the catalyst for the road to redemption.

Jiménez and Morey give Damian Wayne fans much to rave about. Damian’s big fight moment is started with a near full page image. This leads into a big revelation later in the book. Once that information sinks in, the art team instantly switches his emotions from happy to rageful. Failsafe provides an introduction to a new character via a bold full page debut.

Bruce is also displaying his emotions of doubt with a much-needed talk. The panels mirror the realization of what he has done. It also gives readers a sense that he Can’t win this fight. However, their fears are put to ease with the closing page. The full image sets the tone for what’s coming next with a strong mic drop moment.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

With Gotham and his confidence slipping further away, Bruce Wayne gets some much needed help to reclaim his city and identity. Zdarsky sets up some unique pairings with the writing. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles grant fans a vivid picture of the new era of justice along with a glimmer of hope. A showdown is brewing that cannot be missed!

SUPERMAN #13 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, we’re jumping into a brand new Superman crossover with HUGE implications. Starting in the pages of Action Comics #1064, Brainiac has invaded Metropolis with an army of Czarnians! During the fight, some of Superman’s powerful family has been taken hostage. What will the Man Of Steel do next?

Let’s take a closer look at how things play out.

The chapter begins at Warriors Bar in Coast City. Patrons are running in a panic. The reason? A “Main Man” has come in looking for a beverage or two. Readers see DC’s most famous Czarnain sitting at the bar: LOBO!

Stuck on Earth, Lobo is making the most of his time. While having his drink, Superman crashes the scene. A fight ensues as would be expected between these two. However, Superman is in no mood for games. He wants answers to where Brainiac is.

Meanwhile on Brainiac Prime’s ship, Livewire is getting experimented on. The same goes for Parasite. Supergirl doesn’t back down from her cell from letting Brainiac know what’s coming. The threat is brushed off. All the while, Brainiac Prime seems to malfunction.

Readers see the villain weakened. The captives watch and break down what is going on. None more have a bigger interest in events than Lex Luthor. Mercy Graves (Luthor’s longtime assistant) begins to question Luthor about what is going on.

What is Lex’s secret with Brainiac? Can Lobo and Superman co-exist long enough to defeat the odds? The story spotlights the unlikely pair as they make their way towards his ship. The pace picks up with a welcoming committee greeting the pair. This continues until the closing moments.

While the action is happening, a deal is struck that changes everything. Just wait for the final page as the story takes a unique turn into its’ next stop.

Williamson gives fans a fun read with the dysfunctional duo fighting the good fight. Lobo and Superman have had quite the history. The writing plays into the difference of styles to exemplify Superman’s rage over Brainiac. Lobo’s dialogue mirrors the readers reaction to Supes’ edge in the fighting.

The dynamic surrounding Luthor plays a huge role in this issue. Seeing how the previous issues have set the stage, its’ a solid pay-off. Brainiac comes across as cold and emotionless as ever. This causes Lex to act very erratic. This is a contrast to most Lex encounters. The change elevates the closing act. Once a proposition is made, the book shifts gears. This leads to a great close for readers to ponder until next time.

Sandoval and Sánchez give Lobo a great debut with an excellent full page panel. This is followed up with another great image of Superman taking down Lobo, looking for answers. The rage in Superman’s face speaks volumes to readers.

Brainiac and Luthor’s talk carries tension with the featured panels. Seeing the two meeting about the situation at hand goes to another level towards the close. This leaves readers with a lasting closing full page image until the story ramps up again.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

“The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend” never had Superman and Lobo in mind? With Williamson guiding the pair into danger, the “House Of Brainiac” delivers fans a strong chapter to follow. Sandoval, Sánchez and Maher construct big action sequences with a shocking proposition lingering in the background. Just wait for the final page to turn everything upside down until next time.

For this entry, there is a new vigilante in Gotham City. Since emerging as the “new” Batman, Failsafe has been on a rampage against crime. Its’ methods have been extreme. The Bat-family has been proceeding with caution. All the while, fans keep wondering about Bruce Wayne.

Locked away with a broken Joker as a cellmate, Batman needs to find a way to reverse his fortunes. If not, losing Gotham City will be the worst of his problems.

The main story begin with a body being thrown out a window. The airborne figure is Killer Croc. Standing in the broken window frame is the duo of Failsafe and Robin (Damian Wayne). Croc is just another criminal defeated by the extreme measures of Failsafe.

Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) crashes the scene. She tries pleading with Damian about how wrong the new directive is. Damian brushes the pleas off. Failsafe ignores the wishes as well. The cold conversation proves there is dwindling hope that the Batman they know lies inside the robotic body.

Meanwhile, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon are having a conference call with other DC heroes. The topic is how to handle this new version of Bruce Wayne.

That’s also the topic of discussion from a Blackgate prison cell. Bruce Wayne is plotting an escape from his cell and cellmate: The Joker. Batman will need some luck to pull this. To escape, he needs a distraction. As luck would have it, he gets that intervention as Punchline is the next prisoner brought in

How does this all play out? Readers watch as Batman makes a last-ditch effort to run. The pace speeds with time not on Bat’s side. Factor in the Joker and Punchline looming in the background and there is no easy way out. Plus, Failsafe keeps progressing forward! Just wait for the final pages to play out as the parting image solidifies this is anything but over.

BATMAN #146 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (backup story by Michele Bandini and Alex Sinclair) - DC COMICS

Zdarksy pens Failsafe making a bold public statement right off the bat. The effortless handling of Killer Croc sends shockwaves. This begins a merciless run with some of DC’s more noteworthy personalities. None more greater than the last encounter for this chapter. Failsafe’s dialogue is cold and unapologetic in response to this moment. Considering the parties involved, readers will have a vested focus on the pair’s next encounter.

Bruce Wayne is showcased at a very low point. Knowing his enemy is a more ruthless version of himself, the challenge is even greater. The pacing reflects the frantic attempt of freedom. Its’ fallout sets more in motion. This all builds for a great close to a very engaging tale.

Jiménez and Morey kick things off with a loud debut of Croc being thrown through a high-rise office window. Cowles’ lettering is the needed piece to exemplify this starting point. The escape from Failsafe prison is given a strong split panel page. With one half featuring the trouble, the other shows Bruce Wayne ready to take the first step to victory.

Failsafe has big interactions spin out of the Croc arrest Fans will be locked in as the Robotic Crusader crashes and apprehends a big name in the DCU. This pleads into the final encounter with a flagship DCU hero. The body language displayed shows readers that this is not the pair of old friends. This moment is two strangers staking their claims to what is unfolding next. The closing images raise the bar for what is coming next, which is another great chapter for fans.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

With a new dynamic duo running loose in Gotham, Batman struggles to find a way to right this wrong. Zdarsky give readers a tale of two Batman with excellent writing. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles let the new Caped Crusader run wild with dynamic imagery. The new era of justice continues on with a chapter fans won’t want to miss.

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #5 (DC COMICS)

This chapter begins with a look at FBI Headquarters With word of the battle between Alan Scott and Vladimir Sokov aka John Ladd unfolding, action needs to be taken. The director opts not to call the President. He has other plans in mind.

Meanwhile, Alan Scott made a risky move last we saw him. Running low on power, Scott dabbles with the Crimson Flame! It appears not to be as effective with a Green Lantern wielding it. Sokov manages to elude Scott’s attack. Readers witness the rage and emotion pouring out of Scott in these moments. Knowing what Sokov has done to hurt his former lover, the aggression can’t be contained.

Can Scott keep his feelings in check to stop Sokov? With the power surge fading fast, an unlikely action appears to swing momentum. Readers watch as Scott is confronted with a sense of repurpose and a warning.

This all builds into a change that shakes the story down to its core. The closing act raises the stakes even higher than before. Just when readers think the end is here, the final page will have them on the edge of their seats waiting for the finale!

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #5 by Tim Sheridan, Cian Tormey, Matt Herms, Hi-Fi and Lucas Gattoni (DC Comics - Cover: Brandon Peterson)

Sheridan dives into the intensity of Scott’s personal connection to elevate the battle to another level. With Sokov’s systematic attacks, the writing has shown Scott reeling from trying to wrap his head around what has been done. Heading into this issue, Scott took drastic chances. With a well-timed intervention, the Green Lantern gets a personal re-affirmation about the hero he is supposed to be. It’s a game changer moment that sets the story into a clear direction.

The latter portion of the book will please many fans. The action comes in quickly and showcases the heroics of Scott, even against overwhelming odds. Sheridan sets up the finale with a huge moment to exit on that readers can’t help themselves not to be amped for.

Tormey, Herms, and Gattoni bring a “big fight feel” to the battle of the Lanterns. The many different reactions Scott goes through fighting Sokov add much weight to hit with readers. This leads into the changing point of the conflict when Scott has a moment of “green” clarity. Gattoni’s lettering sets that moment with showcasing Sheridan’s writing hitting its mark with Scott.

The remainder of the issue is classic superhero storytelling. There’s an excellent two page spread introducing readers to another level of conflict. As great as that image is, it gets tough competition from the closing page. A full panel entrance makes a bold statement, sending the story into the finale. This creative team knows no bounds on the heights they’re taking readers on.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The pen-ultimate issue of the original Green Lantern burns bright with a chapter that can’t be mixed. Sheridan balances heavy action and drama with his excellent script. Tormey, Herms, and Gattoni provide the vivid imagery to give readers an Alan Scott ready for the immense threat lying in his path. This series continues to be a must-have every time it drops.

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #3 (DC COMICS/Legendary comics)

For this entry, we’re diving back into one of the biggest pop culture crossovers in history. Combining two of Hollywood’s historic monsters is big enough, but adding in DC Comics’ legendary franchise takes it to a whole other level. Within a few issues, the series has delivered on big action and shows no signs of slowing down!

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #3 by Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce, Luis Guerrero and Comicraft picks up after last issue’s shocking ending. Let’s see where things stand now after the dust has settled!

When Godzilla invades Metropolis, this moves draws the attention of the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Little did he or the rest of the DCU know that the King of All Monsters would become the catalyst for an invasion of the Monsterverse into the DC Universe. It also doesn’t help matters that looming in the wings are the Legion of Doom. However, they have shifted their attention to one of its’ members who’s gone rogue.

The first round has gone the way of the monsters in the initial encounter. Superman appears to have fallen in battle with Godzilla. With the rest of the DC Heroes trying to stop other monsters form destroying cities, is there anyone who can stop Godzilla now?

This issue starts in Central City. The Fastest Man Alive, The Flash (Barry Allen) is running into danger. The destination is Iron Heights Prison. What’s waiting for him is MUTO, a classic cthulhu-hybrid monster. Flash heads into the prison to stop a riot from the inmates. As a fog looms overhead, Flash slows down. This allows the meta-prisoners to get the upper hand on the hero.

Luckily, back-up arrives quickly as Supergirl and Green Lantern crash the party. With the mist dealt with, the focus shifts back to stopping MUTO. Plans are derailed for Supergirl as she notices she can’t hear Superman’s heart beat. Knowing something is wrong, she races back to Metropolis.

Readers bare witness to a bloodied and defeated Superman in the street. With other heroes trying to slow down the monster, one takes blame for the fallen Man of Tomorrow. SHAZAM powers up to take down Godzilla once and for all.

How does The World’s Mightiest Mortal contend? The answer doesn’t wait long to appear. The action moves fast as events spiral out of the heroes control. Can they find a way to get their “home field advantage” back? If the final moments are any indication, things might be going from bad to even worse!

Buccellato spares no expense on delivering a non-stop thrill ride with this latest installment. Right from the beginning, the Flash conflict spotlights another DC Hero struggling to believe what they’re dealing with. Buccellato doesn’t spend too much time dwelling on the wonder and kicks right into the heart of the conflict and ultimate resolution.

The shift to Metroplois makes perfect sense as DC’s most powerful hero is defeated. The sense of panic fills those panels until ultimately Shazam enters the fray. Juggling so many characters, Buccellato never forces or cuts short time in the chapter. Each major player gets their moment to tell their part. Pacing helps build up the closing act as a dangerous entity looks to have become even more dealy. There’s such a big “Hollywood” feel to this story that continues to impress.

The art gives each monster a dramatic entrance while building up their moments on page. Duce and Guerrero mix in near full page panels to emphasize this aspect. The moments with Godzilla really capture readers’ attention. From a near full page action shot to a fantastic two page spread, the fight rages on to an easy fan approval. The emotions run high as well concerning the fate of Superman.

Duce and Guerrero balance out the surge of fear and denial concerning the fallen ally with the frantic setting of the story. The latter half of the issue shines as a major player appears to be ready to impact the main plot. The issue is capped off with a strong final image tipping its hand at how bad things are going to become. Another great visual read!

The mayhem continues as the omnsters run wild in the DCU. Buccellato weaves in big action with emotions running high as hope takes a huge hit. The art team construct visuals that give this story the proper larger than life feel it deserves. If you’re not picking this up on New Comic Book Day, you’re really missing out!

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #2 (DC COMICS)

Being one of the most powerful heroes in the 1940’s Alan Scott is on the US Government’s radar. Being pressured to have a higher profile with the JSA is one of those gifts and curses Scott endures. Scott has his own reasons of past experiences to keep a distance from working with others.

Readers witnessed a happier time with him and US Army solider John Ladd. Their happiness is cut short during a previous mission in 1936 known as Project: Crimson. During that mission, Ladd was killed by a mysterious red energy.

Fast forward back to 1941 and Scott appears to a disturbance at a bank. With being credited with saving some hostages, Scott senses something isn’t right. Further complicating matters is the body of Ladd has re-appeared. Before anyone can breakdown more, Scott wakes up in a frightening place: ARKHAM ASYLUM!

This issue begins back in New York City 1941. Scott and his trusted ally Charles Dickles are breaking down what has happened. However, this is all leading to a flashback from earlier as he now awakens in Arkham. Scott wakes up and sees his roommate Billie.

This leads to a moment of group therapy amongst Arkham residents. Readers see Scott was sent to Arkham as a form of “discharge” after Project: Crimson exposed his relationship with Ladd.

This becomes the start of a journey into Scott’s soul as he navigates being who he is and how he loves. Readers follow along as he faces the challenges of society in the 1940’s and where his story takes him into becoming a beacon of hope with the Emerald Flame. All the while, readers witness a final vision that gives a sense of what is really unfolding in Scott’s world and causing his misfortunes/ Get ready for a highly emotionally charged read of one of DC’s best heroes.

Sheridan delivers readers a story of triumph over overwhelming odds. Scott’s struggle to survive in Arkham is a very powerful moment in which conforming never is an option.

The interactions with him and Billie tell a bigger tale of heartache as Scott comes to terms with the loss of Ladd. Its’ fallout defines his character through tragedy.

The tale takes a heroic turn with its’ direction from here. Readers clearly see that through his actions, Scott was the perfect choice to wield the power of the Emerald Flame. The pacing gives enough breaks to tie it back to the current 1940s timeline and further cement Scott’s pledge to defeat this evil.

Sheridan’s writing is excellent in making that connection with the audience. It really made this issue stand out more for the feeling and emotion. Scott proves you don’t need powers to be a champion for good, you just need to live it in your actions. \

Tormey, Herms and Gattoni bring to life the true horrors of Scott in Arkham. The brief moments with Billie come across as pleasant and only lead to what transpires as a terrifying experience.

The struggles Scott faces inside Arkham pop off the panels through his expressions of frustration and sadness. This is on full display with the “Goodbye Now” portion.

The fallout brings things back into a more adventurous part of the story. The creative team builds up these panels into a superb full-page panel where Alan Scott becomes what he was always meant to be: a Hero and symbol of strength for those who need it.

This plays into an excellent parting visual of where things are currently. However, without the great work bringing the past to life, readers would be missing out on the full impact of this tale.

Through the powerful writing of Sheridan, Alan Scott’s journey into becoming a hero instantly wins over readers with this issue. The creative team of Tormey, Herms and Gattoni bring out the intense will of Scott as he presses forward even when society tries shoving back.

GODZILLA HAS APPEARED IN METROPOLIS!!!! Interrupting the proposal attempt of Clark Kent to Lois Lane, Godzilla is looming on the streets of Superman’s City. The Man of Steel engages while Lois and the city’s residents look on with fear and reservations.

The Justice League has had their own issues to deal with as a Lex Luthor led Legion Of Doom has their own plans in motion. However, when Toyman goes roguewith a powerful artifact, plans change quickly for all involved. Plus, King Kong has now entered the field as well?!

This current chapter opens up with Superman addressing the Godzilla matter head on. After the talk goes nowhere, the fighting begins. Godzilla swaps Superman away like a fly! Some of the Justice League is now en route to Metroplois to help. Readers see that Godzilla might not be the only monster the heroes will need to worry about.

The Monsterverse has now invaded the DC Universe via Toyman! How will the heroes fare against these new threats? What of the Legion of Doom? The action escalates as the heroes race to stop the new threats. Will they succeed? If the closing portion of the book is any indication, things look bleak with a shocking visual to send readers home with.

Buccellato presents the beginning of a heavyweight showdown for the ages. Superman versus Godzilla comes across as the major conflict all fans would want and expect. Buccellato paces the opening round with strong moments. Seeing the Man Of Steel challenged in such a manner adds another dynamic for readers to process.

The rest of the DCU Heroes are presented spotlight moments which is nothing but wins for readers. The story never lacks the “special event” feel which continues to illustrate how significant this story is. The writing is winning fans over with ease with another great issue.

Duce and Guerrero craft some unforgettable images for this latest chapter of pop culture icons. The initial “first blow” thrown between Superman and Godzilla is presented with an excellent two-page spread. It sets a high bar for the remainder of their fight. The introductions of the Monsterverse representatives also are gifted with a two page spread, instantly connecting with readers about the dangers happening.

The “Gotham Monster” imagery feels like its’ taken right from a Hollywood blockbuster. The parting shot of one character’s walk-off is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Heading towards the final moments, the art team throws in some interesting dynamics before bowing out of the second issue. It closes with an unforgettable final page spotlighting the threats unfolding on the DC Earth. An exceptional job from the opening page!

The story begins on top of the Daily Planet. A table is set for two with a happy couple seated. Readers see one of comics’ greatest couples enjoying their time alone: Clark Kent and Lois Lane. It’s a normal conversation which leads to Clark dropping to one knee to propose! However, the happy moment has an uninvited guest crash the party. GODZILLA HAS ARRIVED IN METROPOLIS!!!!

Meanwhile at the JLA Watchtower twelve hours prior, another dynamic duo is watching footage of Superman fighting crime. Readers know this pair as Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and The Flash (Barry Allen). Their commentary shows concern for Superman burning himself out for trying too much. they’re interrupted by Supergirl, who mentions she is filling in for Clark during his “vacation” after proposing. They notice on the screen Clark is flying into battle against Titano. By the time the rest of the Justice League arrives to help, Superman has saved the day.

All the while, readers find out that Titano was just a small part to a bigger scheme hatched by some familiar villains. How things play out will catch readers off guard. The latter portion of the book steers events into a clear direction that will please fans. The closing moments will leave no doubt that this is one story you absolutely can’t afford to miss!

Buccellato sets the stage for a truly memorable event. The introduction to Godzilla in the story establishes how big the moment is. The same can be said when Kong debuts as well. Buccellato gives the Superman sub-plot enough time to connect with readers, providing a welcomed break between all the action. With all the pop-culture titans involved, the pacing moves very smoothly. The villains making their moves behind the scenes is pure superhero storytelling bliss. How all the parties ultimately come together is a prime example of this. For anyone who questioned how this would all work out, those fears were quieted quickly. This is going to be something special within this series.

Duce and Guerrero leave a lasting impression on readers with the Hollywood feel of this initial chapter. The two-page spread introduction of Godzilla has that “big fight feel” that the King of Monsters demands. The conversations involving Superman’s “Big Question” reflects the team’s happiness for their friend via their reactions. The action sequences carry that classic “Saturday morning” vibe that readers have grown up with and love. The latter portion of the book offers a few more grand entrances before departing on a final image that one can’t help but be excited for what’s next.

The creative team of Buccallato, Duce and Guerrero give fans an unforgettable first impression with incredible writing mixed with energetic visuals. WONDER WOMAN #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the return of one of DC Comics’ Trinity Characters. In their illustrious history, there has been many heroes of legend but three have stood above the rest: Superman, Batman and Princess Diana of Themyscira otherwise known as Wonder Woman!

Since debuting in ALL-STAR COMICS #8 in 1941, the adventures of Diana Prince have become that of legend amongst comic readers. Now poised to start a new chapter under the “Dawn Of DC” banner, there is a ton of buzz surrounding her latest saga due to the talented creative team behind it.

WONDER WOMAN #1 by Tom King (Mr. Miracle), Daniel Sampere (ACTION COMICS), Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles kicks off a brand new story that is sure to be one fans will be talking about at the LCS this week. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on, shall we?

The issue begins in West Billings, Montana with a simple game of Pool at a bar. The narration leads readers to think that an event has already happened. In the moment, there is some unwelcomed banter amongst patrons. The end result is an Amazonian is smashing a disrespectful male head-first thru the table.

As more male patrons of the bar interject themselves into the conflict, the end result leaves them no reward. When the smoke has cleared, nineteen males are dead inside the bar.

The news media is reflecting the public’s shock about this attack. Some are putting a spin on the events. Suddenly, a man’s phone gets a message that interrupts his meeting with two other individuals. When leaving the meeting, the mysterious figure kills the two businessmen after revealing he was working undercover to expose them. With the bodies laying dead and a room full of scared patrons, the man simply walks up to the counter and leaves his business card to give to the authorities. His name is Sgt. Steel

Steel is now put in charge of a unit known as the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.). AXE is the result of the Congress-passed Amazon Safety Act, which bans Amazons from being inside U.S. Borders.

Readers will need to brace for the viciousness of Steele and his unit. What transpires next will send shockwaves through the DCU. These actions don’t go unanswered as there is someone who has a very vested interest in discovering the truth and the U.S. might not be ready for what Hell she will bring when she strikes. If that is not enough, just wait for the final moments to add more fuel on an already enraged fire!

King constructs such a multi-layered conflict in this opening issue. The idea of the Amazons being banned from the United States is a fantastic twist. With Diana being such a popular and respected public figure, the new stat quo brings forth how will the people now look at Diana after Congress makes their move. King gives some insight to this, but readers can expect the payoff to be later in this series. The question ultimately becomes where will they ultimately side: Diana or the Government?

Steel proves to be a solid foil to what Diana is up against. His blind loyalty is a reflection of the government’s opinions as they push an agenda forward. This is brought to terrifying light on their initial move. The pace nicely builds the tension before the eventual meeting of opposing forces. The action hits when it graces the story but its’ fallout plays a bigger factor. the closing moments throw everything on its’ head as another piece is added to an already impressive puzzle.

Sampere brings this story to life with easy and anxiousness as things swiftly change. The initial outing in the bar paints a vivid picture of the melee that transpired. Excellent full-page panel to light the fuse for this portion. Also noteworthy is the use of the 9-panel page for when the reporters come into the story. Sampere also adds much emotion to the supporting cast of Steel’s attack.

The mannerisms range from scared, frightened to Steel’s maniacal enjoyment of what is happening. The mood changes later as Steel sees exactly who he’s up against as a ill page stand-out visual welcomes that character to the party. The closing moments throw a swerve into where things are heading with a parting image to close out a strong debut chapter.

Mixing in the superhero world with political conspiracies brings forth a grave challenge to Princess Diana of Themyscira. Through King’s superb writing, the visuals from Sampere and Morey paint a fractured and dangerous new world with one character fighting for justice against insurmountable odds. The hype is completely justified on what is happening within these pages. Don’t miss out on NCBD!
