The MUPPETS MAYHEM (DISNEY PLUS)

All riiiight!

Let's get this Off the Cuff Review started with a most positutevly rockin' salute to Disney+. For bringing back the essence of what Muppet Television has been missing.

The Muppet Studios and Disney+ have expungulated 10 episodes with joy and whimsy while still telling a solid story, even if it falls into a few obvious tropes.

The voice cast of the Electric Mayhem are near matches in most cases. At times I felt as if Jim Henson was coming through those pearly whites playing the ivory keys. Bill Buretta not only performed as the periodontal player Dr. Teeth but also was one of the show's developers. So he understood what the essence of what the Mayhem had to be.

Sgt. Floyd Pepper played by Matt Vogel again is spot on! I hope the hardcore Muppet community gives Vogel some slack after playing this character versus his take on a certain amphibian Muppet.

Janice's character has really evolved over the years and her performer David Rudman, yes Janice has been traditionally portrayed by men, did a Fur-Shure groovy job.

Zoot and Lips bring in the brashicality in the horns section. Both equally as bit characters and running jokes. Zoot played by Veteran Muppetier Dave Golez at 76 hasn't missed a beat with his classic character. Lips the smooth saxophonist is hilarious and I do believe that his performer Peter Linz will save the World.

Then there is Animal, the heartbeat of the group. He is just as loveable and wild as ever. Eric Johnson really knows his character and how to play with Animal's physicality and deliver emotion through the wild drummer.

Oh yeah there are some human supporting cast (see tropes)

Characters you say?

Yes this isn't just a silly slapstick show about "getting the band back together"

That will happen eventually but throughout 10 episodes we get the backstory on some of the Mayhem. Once again in recent media,  it uses the found family story.

Speaking of character, the sets are well crafted and if you look closely you'll see nods to other Muppet Media and BLANTANT in-your-face references too!

Are there other Muppets?

Yes and No. Yes, there are a few new muppet characters. But if you are looking for a frog or bear or pig or whatever, you won't find them. There is an out of left-field classic Muppet cameo that is tastefully put in but doesn't steal the scene.

THE CAMEOS

WOW! This show is full of cameos, I wouldn't say to Muppet Movie level. This is a show with a most masterful musicality so the amount of cameos are near Blues Brothers status! I mean if Weird Al Yankovic can pop out during a marshmallow-induced trip at Joshua Tree, anyone can show up.

SOMETHING ABOUT MUSIC YOU SAY?

VERY MUCHLY SO! The Electric Mayhem has always been the premiere Muppet Musicians. So this show has to show it off! Smartly the first musical scene is done with the 40+ year-old classic CAN YOU PICTURE THAT? The rest of the show is all new music with a few covers interjected as needed.

On the whole this is a great one day binge (like I did). Perfect at any time! Having a good day, MAYHEM. Stuck at home sick, MAYHEM! Realizing that your family legacy has all but come to a stop and you must pick up the torch before it all comes crashing down and you are a disappointment to Mommy and Daddy? MAYHEM!

This show, I truly believe this to be one of the best Muppet media we have in recent years on par with The Muppets (2011) hoping this will bring in a new Muppet renaissance.

5 OUT OF 5 CUFFLINKS

(It's a Muppet show in today's world with a Muppet shows heart and sensibility)

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 (MARVEL STUDIOS 2023)

Welcome to Off The Cuff With Tom Craven on the ODPH blog section. For today, I’m reviewing Marvel Studios’ latest: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3! Wow! Marvel and James Gunn hit the ball out of the park with this one.

Since the last time we saw the Guardians in Thor: Love and Thunder, Peter is still dealing with losing HIS Gamora. While the rest of the team has set up shop on Knowhere. That's where we get our plot point for the whole film. But what comes mixed in with the main plot of saving Rocket?

1. Rockets backstory

2. The new hilarious dynamic of the team.

3. A truly menacing villain with no remorse

4. Heart for much damn HEART!

We have been seeing the guardians in the mainstream MCU for almost 10 years. Now and one thing we always saw from this merry band of outer space outsiders was the found family and most of the characters fit the tropes we've come to expect, But they added layers to everyone. I can say from my group there was not a dry eye, myself included! (no shame in my game)

On the whole James Gunn was smart AF at the end of the film everyone was out making their path but with no dead ends.... So they can come back at some point. I'm going to guess it's something on a galactic scale that will call them back. Maybe in Fantastic Four?

There is a lot of galaxy that needs guarding so who knows what's next, but remember to BRUNG TISSUES!

SUPER MARIO BROS. (2023)

SUPER MARIO BROS. (MOVIE - 2023)

First off big thanks go out to the ODPH for the chance to review this movie!

I’m of a certain generation, you could say the Nintendo Generation, that has grown up playing the majority of the mainline Super Mario Bros games. So going into the theater I was excited and skeptical to say the least remembering the live-action movie all those years ago.

This movie hit on all the notes it should have. Music, visuals, power-ups, characters, voice acting, easter eggs, etc etc etc. The best part is that if you are a gamer or an overly-grown-up having to take their kids to the movie, you'll find something to enjoy.

The Pros of the Bros

So many nods to the glorious olden days of the NES! Keen-eyed movie goers will see nods to obviously Punch Out, Jump Man, and Wrecking Crew. But peer further into the background of Brooklyn and you get Duck Hunt, Baseball, and other Nintendo original games from the system's first years in America and other games in the company's roster, like Star Fox and F-Zero from the SNES. For those with the keenest of eyes you'll see Nintendo Playing Cards!

The portrayal of all the various areas in the movie are stunning, to say the least. Are they 100% accurate? No, and that is perfectly ok! I’d rather have a fleshed out world instead of a side scroller.

The voice cast was solid but much like the newer games where it's almost impossible to get a 100% completion there was an actor that in fact didn't matter.

Chris Pratt, I think went back to the drawing board after the response from the initial trailer and I am thankful! Seth Rogen as DK is marvelous. Anna Taylor Joy gave the perfect amount of sass and class to Princess Peach. And let's not forget Charles Martinet who has voiced Mario in the games for 30 years! Lastly, Jack Black as Boswer was ⅓ Black, ⅓ Boswer, ¼ Jables for Tenacious D.

The power ups are not over done, they servl., e their purpose when they need to. Even the Tanooki Suit shows up and what's great is the jokes they make at its expense. Is it a bear or a raccoon? The answer is YES! The single Ice Flower just like the games when it first appeared is a rarity. Even changing the character costumes to match the power-ups wasn't overly done. DK for the first time even got FIRE FLOWER POWER, and the recolor made sense! Let's not forget the stand out character BLUE SHELL!

The Poisonous Mushrooms

Yea, we did get I reference to the Lost Levels. But I’m talking about the small number of head scratch moments:

  • Why the Penguin Kingdom? Seriously with 40 years of history, they could have pulled something better.

  • The pacing yes was a fast-paced movie but the feeling was almost frantic and discombobulated. Like the secrect path was rainbow road… just say “hey were going to take the Rainbow Road”

  • Lastly, it has to be Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. This was more of a play from Illumination showing off the size of their wallet. It really didn't matter who took the role over after pitching it up to fit the character you lost the fact it was Key.

I still plan on seeing it again to get more references and enjoy it with my mom. She remembers when I got my first NES and did her best to play it but always enjoyed watching the joy on my face while I played.

There is obviously a sequel hinted after the credits and who knows maybe we can get a Nintendo Movie Universe.
