Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are checking out the phenomenon that took Kickstarter by storm just a few weeks ago. The team behind the smash indie hit Pocus Hocus has spun off one of its most popular characters into his own series. With Pocus now hitting the comic shops later this year, the little universe being built here has fans excited to see what is coming next.

POCUS HOCUS #1 - FOC AUGUST 13TH - ORDER NOW

The story begins as a normal night on the job with Pocus Hocus doing what he does best. Powered by the strength of “beverages”, Pocus does a trick pulling Horus out of his ear. With the crowd raving in applause, someone is not happy with the current situation. That is Horus.

Readers are taken on a flashback to Horus’ time in Hell’s army. As a respected warrior, Horus’ reputation spoke volumes in the battle between Angels and Demons. The action is not for the squeamish as Horus takes down his enemies in ruthless fashion.

During one of these battles, Horus is on the losing end to a powerful angel. Fearing the end is here, Horus braces to certain doom. However “Demonic” intervention happens in his eyes as a fist crushes the angel. Thinking this is a sign from below(?), Horus embraces the save. Quickly, his dreams are crushed as he sees who’s hand made the save. Horus becomes part of the act as Pocus Hocus pulls him from his magic hat to an audience.

After a random show later, Emily (Pocus’s assistant) has Horus promise he will look after Pocus. He agrees, but little does he realize what he’s in for.

What kind of trouble does Pocus get everyone in this time? Can Horus rise to the challenge at hand? And if he does, is Horus ready for the next chapter in his story to be told? Readers bare witness to Horus doing what he does best: Mayhem and Malice.

However, this time, it appears Horus has bitten off more than he can choose as the closing arc sets him on an unforeseen direction which can only lead to more of what fans crave when they see the rampaging rabbit on the loose!

Dunford and Radford strike again with their one-two combination of dark humor and destruction. On the surface, Horus looks the part of Pocus’ sidekick. Once this story gets rolling, readers quickly pick up on how there is more layers to this character than a magic prop. The backstory of his days in Hell instantly build a foundation of how vastly wrong fans might be about Horus.

Seeing his past and ruthlessness in combat easily wins over readers. Once the middle act begins, it is business as usual with Horus. There’s a great sequence where Horus is called a “bunny” which sparks a berzerker rage like Wolverine in him. It is playful moments like this which balance out the wild action.

The final act throws a new factor into the mix which is sure to add more heat to the drama. The story moves briskly but at a speed that you can sense how Horus is ready for what lies ahead and whoever is in his way is not ready.

Wallis is the perfect artist for this story. His style is tailor made for this book. The action scenes pay off as brutal as a fight between Heaven and Hell’s warriors would. There is an excellent full page image of Horus standing in the middle of the page while the fighting is happening in small panels around him. The facial expressions made hit a home run as most rely solely on how readers can watch Horus’ eyes as events unfold. This all leads to a strong final full page image knowing what happens next is going to a one hell of a sight to be seen.

The spin-off title from Pocus Hocus does not mis-step bringing one of its’ most beloved characters into the spotlight. Radford, Dunford, Wallis and Lentz brings Horus “road back to Hell with good intentions” as they combine the brutality with brilliant banter to make for an undeniable debut.

THE CARDINAL #1 (ALPHA COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we’re checking out a highly successful kickstarter project coming out by way of Alpha Comic Books. With a new superhero universe being born known as “The Alpha Universe”, the expectations are high for this very new independent publisher. Fans have caught wind of Alpha’s moves and fully backed their initial campaign book.

In this day and age of kickstarters being a gateway into readers hands, it is no small feat to have a successful campaign. There has to be something special in the project to connect with fans. Otherwise, it could be grounded before it ever takes off.

The Cardinal #1 by Mason Solimine, Flaviu Pop, Bryan Magnaye, and Mike Bui (Edited by Daniel Calvo and Steve Colle) cleared its goal and is now making its way into comic fans collections. Let’s see how the birth of the Alpha Universe shapes up, shall we?

The story begins in Dallas, Texas. A costumed figure is rushing into dangers way. He is talking himself up to boost his confidence. Waiting for him are three armed robbers holding up hostages inside a bank. With the help of someone off-site, the costumed hero crashes into the bank and takes out some of the robbers with relative ease. It is a benefit to have super powers in this situation.

After freeing the hostages, an officer asks what happened. One hostage says “He Saved Us….The Cardinal”.

Back inside the bank, The Cardinal is dodging bullets with enhanced reflexes. One assailant decides to end things once and for all. He sets off a time bomb inside the bank. Knowing the risks, The Cardinal grabs the bomb and flies it into the sky. The blast goes off without hurting anyone. Once back on the ground, The Cardinal assists in helping the police wrap the situation up before flying away.

It is at this moment that the Cardinal is revealed to be Terrence Eckard, a high school senior. His partner off-site is his sister Sienna. While saving the day, he almost misses another big moment: His high school graduation.

While walking for his diploma, Terrence takes the readers into a dive of his past. It is a tragic tale of family and loss. What happened in his past to define his future? Another time jump happens to where readers start piecing some of the puzzle behind the hero together.

Can Terrence make triumph out of tragedy? One night changes everything as the journey into a hero’s origin begins in the final act. The final panels leave no doubt that there is many miles to soar before the final stage has been landed.

Solimine lays a solid base, breaking this debut into three separate stories. The introduction is everything you would expect out of a superhero story. There is action and heroics clearly felt with each page. The only draw back here is The Cardinal does a lot at once and there’s no clear cut definition of powers. It’s nothing that will take away from the story. Terrence’s “Pep Talk” at the beginning is a nice touch considering what readers find out later.

The dives into his back story makes for a compelling glimpse into what defines his character. The initial flashback or Second story sets up for a few doorways for future events. Solimine ties in deep tragedy with a connection that readers will gravitate with.

The closing act plays more into the present bookending the chapter for now. There is a LOT of unanswered clues to the mystery at hand. Being the first issue, this is expected, so as things progress, readers should expect more things to be clearly established. Overall, it was a step in the right direction with much room to grow.

Pop excels at the action panels for this story. There is a high energy to the fight sequences. This is easily displayed during the bullet hurdling moments at the bank. Going into Terrence’s back story, Pop (with split coloring duties from Magnaye and Bui) gave the panels a defined balance with the emotional reactions of events. This is very noteworthy in the first flashback tale. By the time the issue hits the closing act, Pop ramps up the tempo leading to some great final panels to set the stage for the next installment.

The debut of the Alpha Universe shows promise with its introduction into the land of superheroes. Solimine, Pop and the team deliver on a tale which leaves much room to spread its’ wings. There is enough substance within the starting point of Terrence Eckard’s journey to come back for round two, so keep on the lookout to see when The Cardinal is flying next on Kickstarter.

BRZRKR: POETRY OF MADNESS #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are returning to the BRZRKR universe from BOOM! Studios for an all new adventure. The story of B aka Unute just wrapped up its’ debut run but that was far from the conclusion of the character. With projects tagged to Netflix still in the works (pre SGA strike), there is much for fans to look forward to.

Leading the way is BRZRKR: POETRY OF MADNESS by KEANU REEVES (“John Wick”, “The Matrix”), Steve Skroce, Dave Stewart and Ed Dukeshire. Where do the adventures of Unute take readers this time? Let’s take a closer look and see how this Kickstarter project to LCS staple shapes up!

The story begins in Atlantis. A narrator explains for the mystique of Atlantis’ riches have brought out some unsavory characters trying to claim the resources for their own. Zubatai (The Narrator) greets the army storming the gates. She gives them a warning if they proceeed. The savages laugh it off. Zubatai responds with unleashing the King’s Guard: the half Man, half Mortal, All Killing force of nature known as Unute, the Berserker!

One man verses thousands doesn’t sound like fair odds. However, it’s not fair odds for the thousands. The violence is unleashed as Unute takes the fight to the invaders in graphic fashion. When the conflict finally ends, it is Unute as the last man standing.

As he is paraded around the city to a hero’s welcome, Unute is greeted by King Azaes, whom they share a pivotal moment with the readers. Lurking in the background is Visane, a priest who Unute sense danger around.

Later in the evening, Unute stumbles upon a robbery of highly important objects. With the preist looks as the prime suspect, unute makes his way to confront him.

Once he arrives, Unute walks into a surprise situation that leads to nothing but trouble. What dangers have been unlocked? Can Unute stop them? What will be the future of the Kingdom now? Readers get set for another does of drama and ultra violence as Unute does what he does best. The conclusion brings a definite close to what should be a pleasing tale for fans from this series.

BREAKDOWN: Reeves doesn’t stray too far from the formula of previous issues of the brutal saga. If anything, this story has more moments of light-hearted dialogue than in recent memory. There is a bit of random swearing mixed in that works for some scenes but feels awkward in other stages.

Unute still connects as a troubled force of nature. Reeves scatters in more “human” elements with the flashback sequences of him filling in as a “father-Figure” to King Azaes. This plays heavy into the closing act, which ties up all loose ends before its’ conclusion. Readers who want the big action will not be let down as Reeves delivers on those larger-than-life times for a good majority of this issue. There’s absolutely nothing wrong as any long time reader of the series knows. If you want action, look no further.

Skroce steps in for art duties and spares no expense with the sheer brutality of Unute. The initial onslaught is a graphic two-page spread that readers witness limbs torn and cut off. Normally, this might be a bit much, but this fits Unute’s world to the letter. Skroce focus on the details of Unute’s regeneration as he heals up from the viciousness of battle. The gradual progression gives readers a sense of how things work concerning Unute.

They are gifted a wild scenario for the final battle. Unute’s big opponent gives the box office sense of epic once it enters the story. Even with the noticable difference in structure, the battle brings the same energy as only a BRZRKER story can. Great final one page panel to wrap things up with until we see Unute appear again.

Unute’s return after the debut series conclusion sends the title character into a familiar realm. Reeves pens the story with a sense of action leading its way. Skroce and the team bring the vividly imaginative tale to life with unforgiving fight scenes fitting for the half-man, half god. If you’re a fan of BRZRKR, you won’t be disappointed with this issue.

GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 (SOURCE POINT PRESS)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

Live now on Kickstarter (until July 7th) is the latest campaign for one of the fastest growing Comic book brands at the LCS: Top Hat Studios! Coming out of the gates with “Pocus Hocus”, The creative team of Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz have steadily grown their fanbase with each project. With the spin-off character HORUS debuting in his own project, even more fans are dipping into this studios’ work for the first time.

That said, there’s another project from this team currently available as an add-on for the Horus campaign and it’s one fans won’t want to miss! GRANDMA CHAINSAW #2 brings the dark humor and frightening terror fans for this brand have come to know and love. Let’s take a closer look at this issue, shall we?

Haiden, his sister Gabby, girlfriend Haley and Liz started the day together at the beach. However returing home has been the trip from Hell. When their car breaks down, an elderly stranger named Hazel offers help and shelter for a dark night. The group soon finds out that help is hiding an even darker secret. The body count starts to rise as Hazel reveals her true form.

With Haley and Liz not making it thru the night, Haiden and Gabby are on their own. That is until FURY-CHAN, NIGHT MOON, DOC X, BLOOD SPARROW, SHADOW AXE & 2TON aka THE D.E.A.D. SQUAD arrive to …..help?

This issue picks up from the “dramatic superhero” entrance where 2TON takes a metal star to the forehead. Gabby is unimpressed by the “heroes” and plots to escape. Those plans are halted when the squad reveals plans to stop Hazel once and for all. A journal of events is presented chronicling Hazel’s history (as they know it).

Readers witness what she’s been doing this entire time and what she is capable of. Gabby is still ready to go but Haiden talks her into staying and seeing the squad plan through. All the while, Hazel is knitting and patiently waiting for the night’s new visitors.

How does the plan go? Readers tag along for the action as the group enters Hazel’s house. What dangers lie ahead? Are they up to the challenge? Will everyone get out alive…..probably not. What will everyone get instead? An exciting read with gruesome kills and more mysteries unfolding at each turn.

The danger keeps escalading as some continue to move thru the house, until the last page. The final moments leave more questions than answers but that’s a huge win for readers that the story is far from over.

BREAKDOWN: Radford and Dunford skillfully master balancing the horror and humor for this issue. The D.E.A.D. Squad is as ridiculous as it sounds, yet, they provide well-timed humor into the dark tale. Clearly, they are not ready for this job and it’s only a matter of time till their LARPing catches up with them. The banter between them and Gabby’s rationalization makes for the enjoyable break between the terror.

Excellent full-page breakdown of Hazel to give a closer look at what she’s about without revealing everything. Hearing it through the Squad’s voice added a nice layer to the story. Is it true or completely off-base? Only the reader will decide.

The story plays into the classic Horror Movie build and never feels forced or rushed for shock. Solid ending to this issue to continue the mystery for another round. There’s much for Horror readers to enjoy with this tale.

As with every great Horror story, readers measure it by the kills. Balondo and Smith bring the OMG to a few noteworthy characters. One that will no doubt have fans talking involves an air tank. No spoilers but you know the team had fun creating that visual (even Lentz writing the “Boop! :-)”.

Balondo constructs the eerie feel of the panels building small then leading into bigger and even full page visuals. One standout page is the group shot with a mysterious figure lurking in a doorway. Another is the creative way to say “Part Two” mixed in the background.

The little touches of detail add more apprehension for the group’s travel leading to the ominous closing visual. It’s another smash success.

Top Hat Studios plays to their strengths to give fans another smash fusion of horror and humor. Taking Radford and Dunford’s lead with doubling down on classic set-ups and timely banter, Balondo, Smith and Lentz run with striking visuals of the unlikely survivors’ plight to avoid being the next on Hazel’s “Eat, Slay, Love” diet.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest from a team that has been tearing it up on the independent scene for quite some time now. Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz have been on quite to hot streak with their Kickstarter projects via Top Hat Studios. Their current one, Grandma Chainsaw #2 hit goal first day and has created quite the buzz for itself. In case you are not familiar, Pocus Hocus centers around a man who sells his soul to a demon to become the world’s greatest magician. Pocus’s reasons for doing this? He wants impress his father and get his paternal approval. Unfortunately for him, Pocus’s father passes away before seeing him display his powers. Years later, the demon reappeared looking for Pocus to help him get out of a mess. Failure to do so meant both the demon and Pocus would die. Luckily, there’s one person in Pocus’s life that might be able to save him: his assistant Emily. Together, they embark on a journey into Hell where more secrets are uncovered and Pocus’ life as he knows it has changed forever.

This issue kicks off with Pocus, Hugo the Demon, HORUS the rabbit (FTW!) and Emily being invited into the realm controlled by Queen Lilith. Persius walks in to break the news that the group is here, but Lilith knows this already since she invited them in. Persius is killed instantly for questioning the queen. Lilith allows Victoria to take out “team Pocus” with the exception of Emily, who she has big plans for.

Meanwhile, Pocus is drowning his sorrows in front of a small crowd. After making “friends” with the patrons, Pocus senses everything isn’t alright. There are voices lurking which tip him off. While trying to leave, it is revealed there is a trap set to kill him. The bartender transforms into a huge spider like creature. Pocus makes a run for the door and is greeted by his fellow travelers. With a united front led by HORUS, Pocus and the team handle the monster. However, there’s no time to celebrate as a mysterious figure by the name of Samuel S. Ramsuel arrives on the scene.

What is his intent? Why does he have a vested interest in Pocus’s journey? More importantly, what is the history between him and HORUS?! Readers jump along for the ride as Pocus faces a grave challenge that he might not be fully capable of handling. The final page drops a huge exclamation point on the latest chapter that will have fans looking for when the next Kickstarter campaign begins!

BREAKDOWN: Radford and Dunford keep readers guessing with a touch more serious issue that they have seen previously. The spotlight on Lilith gives this chapter a different feel as she teases at her master plan for Pocus and co. without having a great deal of panel time featured. That said, there’s no shortage of the classic humor that has made this series stand out. The initial encounter with the spider creature plays out with Pocus’ obliviousness to what is happening with quips sprinkled throughout. Even when the creature gets ready to strike, Emily counters with a monologue only to be countered with a bored Spider asking for things to get going again. Another standout moment is when Ramseul makes his debut. The conversation is light hearted with solid laugh out loud moments are mixed in. Horus’s reputation was already legendary but hearing Ramseul talk about it raised its’ stock. Form here, the story shifts back into a more serious-esque tone, ramping up on the drama before closing strong with a big final page.

Balondo welcomes readers into this corner of darkness with some wild imagery. The creatures featured in this series jump out from the moment they hit a panel. The spider debut was strong in its’ initial debut only to be complemented by a full panel showcase. Excellent two-page spread to show the “team” in action. The mannerisms of the team when first talking with Ramseul are a noteworthy moment. The way Balondo sets up the back and forth with Horus, Hugo and Ramseul gives a much needed detour from the more direct tone of the book. The action sequences play off well in the final chapter to ramp up what is unfolding. Superb final page to finalize events while building up anticipation for the next issue.

FINAL POINT: The next phase of the world’s favorite soul selling magician sets course with another excellent read. Dunford, Radford, Balondo, Smith, & Lentz mix up the light hearted dialogue with a more direct theme with the writing & outstanding art. The series sets a new course and readers will be excited to get this in their hands (along with Grandma Chainsaw #2). Make sure you don’t miss both!

INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re at the conclusion of a break-out series from comics most exciting line: The Massive-Verse from Image Comics via Black Market Narrative. INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3 by MAT GROOM (Power Rangers, Ultraman), ERICA D’URSO (The Mighty Valkyries), IGOR MONTI & BECCA CAREY brings to comic shops the conclusion of the introductory story of Cassia Costa. Breaking down the Kickstarter volume into three issues has been no easy task but the series has been winning over fans month after month since its’ initial release via Image. Last time readers saw Cassia, Apex City is still reeling from the attack of the Griffin while Cassia has one of her biggest fears unfold right before her eyes. How do things fare in this final installment of Book One? Let’s take a closer look and see how the latest series of the Massive-verse concludes its’ spectacular debut, shall we?

INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3

Going away to school was expected to be a life-changing event, but even Cassia Costa didn’t expect how fast things would change when she arrived at the Helix Campus. Being a new student at the prestigious school in Apex City carries enough weight, but becoming the surprising beacon of hope and the only line of defense against the Griffin might be too much to bare.

When danger struck as the Griffin caused the entire foundation of Apex City to rise, fate found Cassia in the form of a red object that activitied her fire inside becoming the hero INFERNO GIRL RED! With the assistance of her mother, Ana and her roommate Harriette, Cassia has faced down the Griffin’s forces until a showdown between them proved too much for Cassia to handle. Rebounding from the encounter, Cassia is lured out to face the threat while the Griffin kidnaps her mother, leaving Cassia is a state of sheer defeat.

This issue opens up with Harriette returning to their dorm room and seeing Cassia crying over the disappearance of her mother. Cassia opens up to Harriette about how her mother was on to the Griffin’s ways and she was disgraced to the point Cassia’s father left them both. Feeling truly alone, Harriette provides comfort and confidence standing by Cassia’s side during this time of need and reminding her what truly makes her a hero. The conversation results in Cassia revealing her superhero identity, which Harriette already deciphered.

The pair then discuss plans to stop the Griffin once and for all. With an assist from a fellow student, they find a location where a tremendous amount of power is being used. Cassia prepares to head to the location, ready to overcome the odds and be the hope that Apex City needs in this time of crisis.

At this stage, The Griffin addresses Cassia’s mother and his identity is revealed to the readers. Once Cassia arrives, the final showdown begins! Readers are ringside for a battle of the ages as Cassia goes toe-to-toe with an adversary who Cassia has no choice but to defeat with the lives of her mother and residents of Apex City hanging in the balance.

The conclusion doesn’t leave both combatants unscathed. It leaves readers filled with ranging emotions. Once the battle has passed, the final moments offer a satisfying conclusion to the inaugural chapter of the Massive-Verse’s latest hero.

BREAKDOWN: Groom leaves readers with an exciting ending to Cassia’s first solo story. At the core of this tale has been the concept of hope. It truly is Cassia’s super power. Once she believes that she can accomplish the impossible, Cassia proves that powers never made her a hero in the first place. Groom showcases Cassia as a determined character who faces her fears and doubts head-on. This portion of the story shows her growth in believing as she needs to find the fire inside her to push forward with the absence of her mother as her normal guide. This becomes even more apparent with the showdown with the Griffin. Having been previously defeated, Cassia needs to push herself beyond her fears know what failure could mean. The resolution of the battle magnifies how important it was to win and sends off Cassia’s world with a compelling good-bye (for now…)

D’Urso’s art amplifies the intensity of the final battle to incredible levels. The action panels hold readers’ attention and never lets go with its non-stop pacing. This has been a staple of this book since its’ inception. D’Urso brings a vibrant energy to the series which reflects the optimism and hope Cassia has (with much praise going to Monti & Carey to amplify these panels). D’Urso also brings out the deeply emotional elements of Cassia’s world. The moments she shares with her mother and Harriette show readers the power of self-belief can overcome insurmountable odds.

FINAL POINT: Groom, D’Urso and the team have not only made a highly enjoyable superhero story, Through their work, they’ve reminded comic readers what makes a hero isn’t the powers they have, but the fire inside that gives them the courageous drive to be heroic. The series is a must-add to your collection and you can’t leave the local comic shops this week without a copy.

BRZRKR #12 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of one of the most high-profile Kickstarter books in recent memory which has been released to the local comic shops via Boom! Studios. Considering who is the mastermind behind it, there’s no question why it’s getting the (rightfully deserved) attention it is. BRZRKR #12 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney and Bill Crabtree for Boom Studios brings to close (in this format) the saga of B, half man, half god, all 100% walking violence. The story has been a brutal journey thru the eyes of an immortal who’s seen enough and looking for a way out. With the events of last issue, all bets are off as to where B’s story concludes for now.

Before we get started with the review, the images featured here may be too violent and graphic for younger readers. Viewing discretion is advised. That said, if you’re still good to go, let’s get the review started, shall we?

The story of B (aka Unute) has been drenched in mystery and violence for decades. In present day, B has aligned himself with the US Government as a human demolition derby for some of their most highly dangerous missions. B’s payment has been assistance in finding a way to end his immortal life. Dr. Caudwell has been supervising B’s missions in a way to cover up his own devious interest in B. Meanwhile Dr. Diana Ahuja has been B’s only ally throughout this period.

At last we witnessed B, Caudwell was going to a possible location with secrets to possibl end B’s life. Meanwhile, B had just traveled thru his own existence, making a connection with Diana in the form of a massive blast of energy. Witnessing this latest action, Caudwell finally enacts his master scheme of stealing B’s power. Caudwell siphons the energy from a magical bird impaling B for his energy. If not for Diana, B would truly be dead. Instead, an apparently mortal B and Diana now need to face a powered Caudwell, who has emgered from a chamber crackling with energy. The final battle appears to be at hand.

This issue kicks off with Caudwell and his cult followers facing off with the government forces. B and Diana head into battle with Diana being the super-powered being of the pair now. When B is injured in the fight, Diana steps up and brutally handles Caudwell in a scene that isn’t meant for the squeamish. With Caudwell handled, the pair escape with Keever, a soldier who has been partners with B for many missions. Tying up loose ends, Keever gives the order to wipe everything away. The escaped is shadwoed by bomber jets unloading an arsenal on everything in the battle location.

The lives and B and Diana is changed forever in a way that readers will be intrigued to see play out. Life doesn’t return to normal as B and Diana are considered loose ends that need to be wrapped up in the same way of wiping Caudwell’s secrets off the map. Their manner of handling that aspect leads them to a new status quo but not one without problems.

The conclusion of the story is one that has many layers to it. There is a definite answer to questions that have lingered since the start of the series. There are also some new directions left open to travel down with a few plot points kept open-ended by the final page. Readers will have much to talk about following this finale as it’s a safe bet they haven’t seen the last of this franchise in comic form.

BREAKDOWN: Reeves and Kindt deliver on a big action finale to the present story while leaving the door open to return should they decide to return. The issue opens up big with tremendous action. The battle with Diana and Caudwell serves its purpose and drops a thunderous close to that plot-line. Post fight is where they move things into uncharted territory. Both B and Diana have to face an unclear future with a huge change in plans for both. It is a huge game-changer that needs to be unspoiled, but once created, takes the story into a very poignant direction moving forward. The writing adds many levels to the final moments which tie certain plots together nicely. Certain elements become full circle. They also pace things out to where the issue feels as a “so long for now” instead of a full “good bye”. It’s not a bad thing but one that will keep readers guessing as to where events move from here.

Garney brings the same intensity to the fighting that this series has become known for. The panels with Diana facing off against Caudwell are as in your face as they come. The damage inflicted holds little back to readers. It sets an early tone that is revisted later when more fighting ensues. B’s life has been centered around conflict and fighting since its’ beginning. The imagery wastes no time in reflecting that, even in more individual standoffs (one especially noteworthy with Keever). Garney levels this off with more emotional moments with Diana and B’s new direction. Without revealing too much, their lives become more complicated after Caudwell’s apparent demise. The reactions to the domino-like effect shines thru leading to a lasting parting shot with many questions coming from it.

FINAL POINT: BRZRKR has always been a complex tale that delves into the man behind the rage. It has been anything but your average comic story. Not surprising, Reeves, Kindt, Garney and the team present a compelling ending mixed with solid writing and excellent art. The saga of B finally reaches its’ final destination with a closing chapter that will please longtime readers of the series. Make sure to keep an eye out for this book on New Comic Book Day.

ODPH podcast Interview: BRIAN BALONDO (POCUS HOCUS, GRANDMA CHAINSAW)

For this entry, we have a special interview with a creator whose latest project is currently in the midst of another monster campaign on Kickstarter! Based out of the Philippines, BRIAN BALONDO has been the visual architect to the Top Hat Studios team since its’ debut issue of Pocus Hocus in 2021. Since that point, Brian and the rest of the team has gained more fan buzz and followers thru their DIY approach to comics. With a huge hit on their hands with Pocus, Balondo teamed up again with Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz for 2022’s GRANDMA CHAINSAW. With his busy schedule, Brian managed to sneak in some time with the ODPH to talk about his life in comics. Here we go!

ODPH Ken: Hey Brian, thanks for taking the time out to chat and congrats on the new campaign

BRIAN : Thank you and yeah, the team and I are very excited about the latest Pocus Hocus Chapter.

ODPH Ken: Definitely an exciting time, but let’s go back to the beginning and just how did you get started into comics

BRIAN : The very first comics project I did was from an independent group here in the Philippines. It was only released in a Comic Con here. After that, I get to do another independent book titled Starburn and it all started from there.

ODPH Ken: What artists would you say have influenced you the most and why?

BRIAN : Hmm… probably Olivier Coipel and Dike Ruan are my biggest influences in art style. They’re incredible. However, Junji Ito is my main influence when it comes to everything horror.

ODPH Ken: And after that start, how did you connect with the Top Hat Studios team?

BRIAN : Allen Dunford was the one who contacted me and asked if I was willing to work on Pocus. I wasn’t able to accept at first as I was currently working on a project but I was really glad that they have waited for me. It has been a blast since I've started working on every Top Hat project.

ODPH Ken: What are the biggest challenges of communication with the team since you live world's away?

BRIAN : Actually, there's no challenge at all. I can easily talk to them through messenger and email. Sending files is a no hassle either. You would think there would be some kind of issue, but we’ve made it work (looking for something to knock on).

ODPH Ken: Over the past few years, Kickstarter is become such a huge movement in the land of comics. What is your feelings towards the entire process and now with another book heading that way?

BRIAN : I’m always excited and scared on every Kickstarter project we have. That feeling of being not knowing on the outcome of every project, but it’s good motivation to make the best book possible.

ODPH Ken: Pocus Hocus is such a unique book. What was your first reaction to reading its’ pitch to join?

BRIAN : Actually, I was amazed and curious at the same time. I was excited to know what could happen next as the scenes plays in my mind.

ODPH Ken: Pocus Hocus was a huge success, what was the feeling of going into Grandma Chainsaw?

BRIAN : I think excitement first comes to mind. I've always wanted to do a project like Grandma Chainsaw. Just everything horror with mystery always keeps me intrigued.

ODPH Ken: Now doing two back-to-back horror books, what do you think the biggest difference between the books?

BRIAN : Hmmm… the biggest difference maybe is the theme. In Grandma Chainsaw, we see a lot of horror and gore while in Pocus Hocus we have a really fun adventure with a touch of horror. So, yeah… I’d say the themes really separate the two, but I enjoy doing both of them.

ODPH Ken: With all the buzz around these characters, is there any other characters you’d really want to work on if given the opportunity?

BRIAN : This is a no-brainer for me. My dream projects are Batman and Hellboy.

ODPH Ken: Before we let you go, can you say any future plans for you and the team?

BRIAN : Well, we are currently working on new issues of Pocus Hocus and Grandma Chainsaw. After that, We also have some plans for future projects but I really can’t speak about those today. All in good time though.

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #26 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re picking up the pieces of the latest tale of Erica Slaughter in the pages of one of the best comics on the market! Something is Killing the Children #26 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design from Boom Studios ushers in a brand new status quo after last issue’s heartbreaking moment. It’s one I’m still not over after reading the issue a few times!

Before we deep dive into this issue, there’s only a few hours left to back James Tynion’s (along with PK Colinet, and Elsa Charretier)’s Kickstarter movie, “Room Service.” This should be a big hit when t’s released so don’t miss out on your chance to get on board now! Erica Slaughter’s re-emergence hasn’t gone without its fair share of problems. After re-surfacing in Tribulation, New Mexico hunting down a killing monster, Erica has been being hunted by The Order of St. George, who have sent the sadistic Cutter after her. The case hasn’t gone smoothly as the lone witness Gabi, hasn’t been very cooperative and brought Erica into the direct line of the creature. Erica barely escapes but is wounded in the process. All the while, Cutter makes the first big blow to Erica, killing her friend and confident Big Gary. The scene from last issue hit readers in all the emotions and leaves Erica in a broken state.

This issue picks up with Erica recuperating from her injuries in Riqui’s (a bartender and reluctant “guardian” of Gabi) parents place. She’s bruised and not opening up about what she encountered with the monster. While this is happening, Gabi is bonding with Riqui’s brother Johnny. The siblings clearly have issues with each other. Gabi is left by herself and is asked not to see Erica. Gabi doesn’t listen to this advice and sees more than she bargains for. Gabi overhears Erica’s assessment of current events. The future doesn’t sound so good for anyone.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Carter Thomas calls Riqui about the scene Erica and the monster left behind. While this is going on, a certain figure has made their way to Tribulation: Cutter! What she does next will set the tempo for the next round of her hunt of Erica Slaughter. Will Erica survive all the forces surrounding her now? Readers will have much to process with the new playing field set.

Tynion hits the ground running with building up the story after last issue’s epic goodbye of Big Gary. Erica is broken and latching on to whatever she can. This doesn’t come off as a good plan but Tynion showcases her dealing with grief by going head first into completing the plan. It makes for a natural emotional response to what has happened. The rest of the cast does their part to elude to more things to come but nothing outshines Erica’s dealing what’s transpired. Cutter makes a big entrance and tightening the hold she’s forming on Erica. Cutter comes off as making this job more personable that it has to be and this will work wonders for the eventual pay-off.

Dell’edera paints the picture of Erica’s pain splendidly as this new story takes over. Erica’s tough demeanor covers up the pain she’s feeling. Dell’edera’s stone-faced expressions for Erica drive that element home for readers. Cutter’s tale stands strong on its’ own as well. The encounter with Sheriff Carter made for a unique dynamic to where her story is heading. Cutter’s demeanor reflects how vicious she is about her assignment. The art portrays how much she enjoys what she’s doing and that’s a scary notion to comprehend. The other role players make their marks too but this issue belongs to Erica and the next phase of her life.

Final Point: Erica Slaughter’s road forward starts with a strong issue laying the new groundwork out. Tynion, Dell’edera, and Muerto blaze the new trail with excelling character moments along with convincing art to sell the point that Erica’s journey back is only just beginning. make sure to check this issue out at the local comic shops this week and sign up for the “Room Service” kickstarter before its too late.

For this entry, we’re spotlighting a series that is in the midst of its’ latest campaign on Kickstarter…and what a name to this book! BIGFOOT KNOWS KARATE! #1 by Dan Price and Casey Allen for Caged Rhino Productions was a huge hit with a wildly creative tale. Issue #2 just began its kickstarter run on October and looks to wrap up on November 10th. There are a lot of great incentives to sign up for volume 2 but before checking that out, let’s take a trip back to issue #1 and give you an insight on what’s happening here, shall we?

BIGFOOT KNOWS KARATE - CHAPTER 2 KICKSTARTER IS LIVE UNTIL NOVEMBER 10TH, 2022!

The story opens in a secluded forest. It is peaceful and quiet but someone appears to be hunting a rabbit. The hunter is not whom it seems to be. Readers get to see Bigfoot debut in a dramatic entrance saving the rabbit from a wolf. Just when one would think danger is averted, human hunters try shooting the rabbit. When the bullet misses their target, those hunters quickly become the prey as Bigfoot steps up to handle them. The action is swift and brutal. One thing is for certain: This is not your average Bigfoot of legend!

After dealing with the hunters, Bigfoot goes into meditation to deal with the physical and mental fallout from that small skirmish. The challenge to find inner peace is a solid break form the build of the first act. However, as Bigfoot takes this journey to another place. Within this realm, Bigfoot is challenged to venture into a land that teeters between “real and unreal.”On this path, he comes in contact with a mysterious figure that passes along a warning. With little time to process, Bigfoot awakens back in the “real world.” Once returned, he sees he’s not alone as standing in front of him: A GIANT KUNG-FU ‘THULHU?!?!?! Armed with his swords and a strong will, Bigfoot jumps into battle against the towering foe.

The battle is everything you want and expect! No punches pulled. Nothing held back. It’s a wild fight that Bigfoot can’t win but refuses to quit on. Their battle heads into some fun directions. The end results will have readers on their toes as some curves are thrown into the path of the story. It caught me off guard for the right reasons. Once the “smoke” all cleared, readers will be locked in to see where the next chapter takes them. Very entertaining first issue!

BIGFOOT KNOWS KARATE - CHAPTER 2 KICKSTARTER IS LIVE UNTIL NOVEMBER 10TH, 2022!

This was a really fun read. From the title alone, readers know they’re in for something special here. Price and Allen have flipped the narrative on Bigfoot and took the character into some uncharted territory. The book’s intro is a prime example of the “bait and switch” technique that shows up frequently here (and that’s not a bad thing). Seeing him trying to tame the beast within was a notable theme of the story. Price is on double duty as a co-writer and artist here so he knows how to balance things out for connecting with the readers. The conflict of peace and fighting is one that should be expected to grow moving forward.

Take nothing away from the action panels throughout the issue. The fighting scenes with Bigfoot and Thulhu were intense and not afraid to get extremely brutal when needed. Nothing felt like it was for shock value. The story lets room for the creativity to shine. Bigfoot being clearly outmatched needs to find ways to take the giant down. It’s safe to say he makes some progress in that area. The ending will be a nice swerve to keep readers guessing. Obviously, the creative team isn’t playing their full hand issue one. They gave enough for you to get hooked into the story happening here to be back for more.

Final Point: If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining comic, Bigfoot Knows Karate IS your book. Price and Allen make the mythical figure into a complex layered figure who is not afraid to fight when the cause matters. The story is just beginning so get on board now and sign up for the Kickstarter today!
