For this edition, Marvel Entertainment is about to unleash Hell On Earth. Touted as “The Bloodiest Marvel Event EVER”, the crossover event of 2024 has set the benchmark extremely high. It has been teased since last NYCC in October of 2023. What is the dark threat looming in the real MCU? Can it live up to expectations?

The saga begins with a few notable Marvel characters infused with the Darkforce. There is a countdown to “Sundeath” ticking away as readers watch the panels unfold. Events get graphic as a reveal is provided. The Sun has been killed. A voice narrates the shocking end. This has been someone’s plan all along….

Meanwhile, time shifts back fifteen minutes earlier to the SunDeath. Scarlet Witch is flying over a crowd. She sees Blackout. The villain has become ingulfed in dark energy. Iron Man informs her that more Darkforce characters are in the same situation. They have now become portals.

Hunter’s Moon and Tigra are assessing the Shroud becoming a portal. The time is now 25 minutes before SunDeath. As the pair starts piecing things together, they come to a quick conclusion. This is no accident. This is an ambush. A herd of Vampires fill the sky and presses forward towards them.

All over the world, Vampires are unleashing Hell on whoever comes across their paths. Neither Doctor Doom or Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can escape the invasion. There might be one person to make sense of it all: BLADE. Will he be enough to turn the tide?

Readers watch as the heroes come across a group ready to give them challenges. The Bloodcoven has arrived. Who will be left standing at the end of their confrontation?

Things get violent and graphic quickly. This leads to some shocking moments. none might be bigger than the closing page. A figure has made a choice. The consequences are deadly. Readers need to brace for impact as the event has already made some statements and it only just started.

MacKay keeps fans guessing with the backwards working of the timeline in this chapter. The Sundeath countdown proves to be an effective plot point as the MCU crumbles. Seeing how the Avengers struggle right from the start speaks volumes of the threat.

The Bloodcoven is an eye-catching group. Their fury knows no bounds. Once they arrive, pacing speeds up to give the shocking fallout. MacKay doesn’t hold back on huge moments. The issue has much for fans to discuss. none might be greater than the final page. It is a bold ending to a very capturing story.

Larraz and Garcia unload the violence in the first salvo. The vampires are as ruthless as one would expect. They get a full page reveal as Hunter’s Moon and Tigra watch in fear . The imagery shows how even Doctor Doom needs to pause and adapt to their onslaught.

The brawl between the Avengers and The Bloodcoven leaves little on the cutting room floor. Following the full page reveal, graphic attacks are what fills the pages. It is intense fighting. Readers will have little time to process what they’ve seen as the final act unfolds. The closing full page will send shockwaves as the moment crushes fans before ending events for now.

Marvel’s big crossover leaps heavy into violence and mystery with its’ debut chapter. MacKay guess readers on edge with fantastic storytelling. For this entry, the world of the X-Men is crashing down around them. The Krakoan Era is ending. Mutantkind is on the verge of Extinction. Charles Xavier’s dream is a nightmare. Ten years in the future, Xavier is trying to find a way to stop Nimrod and Orchis.

With a desperate attempt to end things before they begin fails, Xavier goes into another direction. The choice has now pitted him against the very people he’s fought to save!

Rise of the Powers of X #4 by Kieron Gillen, R.B. Silva, David Curiel, Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment) brings a new phase of level of excitement into the X-men’s last showdown.

Charles Xavier has crossed a line. After failing to kill Moira McTaggert in the past, Xavier has been exposed as a traitor. Xavier kills Rachel Summers. Rasputin IV goes on the offensive with revenge on the mind. Xavier is cutting a deal with Mother Righteous about handling his X-Men.

Once dealing with Rasputin, Xavier and Righteous appear to be at a standstill. Xavier knows Righteous is depowered. Before she has a chance to react, Xavier initiates another double cross of his own. Mother Righteous is taken out. It is revealed that Xavier is using Righteous as a bargaining chip. The other half of the deal? That goes through Omega Sentinel!

Readers watch as Xavier grasps for anything to keep his Krakoan dream alive. How far is the Professor willing to go? As for the X-Men, there’s still a few tricks left up their sleeves. A resurrection takes place that could be the tipping point in the fight. It all builds towards a final sequence that sparks a match to burn the whole world down. Everything is drawing together to leave a crushing finale in Krakoa’s final hours.

Gillen gives X-fans plenty to talk about with this chapter. Xavier is written as a shattered soul. The lengths he goes to borderlines on insanity and desperation. The conversations and deals made with Omega Sentinel reflect his desperation as his dream died in front of his eyes.

Meanwhile, the last remaining X-Men show the complexity of their next moves. Gillen sets up a few surprises in the latter half that will catch some readers off guard. With the multi-layered levels at play, pacing keeps things moving towards a strong close. It’s been a solid run thus far and looks to cash in big at the conclusion.

Silva and Curiel hit the ground running with a shocking first page. Seeing Xavier’s actions and consequences kick events off was a big move with a near full page panel. This leads into a wide array of Xavier’s emotional expressions as his plans start dwindling away. The final page slowly teases a new factor into the story that will only ignite fans interest down the home stretch. There’s much to enjoy from this.

With deception in the air, the X-Men scramble to stop their biggest threat. Gillen balances the action and drama with sharp writing. Silva and Curiel level up the visuals, presenting many moments for fans to enjoy as Krakoan time slowly slips away.

After dealing with the Shadow King, Storm and Magneto have returned to the land of the living. It’s not a moment too soon as Orchis makes their big play to eliminate Mutantkind.

The chapter starts off with Magneto crashing an Orchis base. Soldiers are firing but Magneto pushes forward. These troops are easily outmatched for what they’re dealing with. Magneto’s only question is to revert back to his deadly past or be a changed man and show mercy.

With a looming stand-off, Magneto is forced to make a choice. Trapped mutants are behind closed doors. One false move will set off nerve gas killing them all. What choice can he make? Sacrifice himself to save others? Defiantly standup to the surrounding guards?

Readers watch as a choice is made. There is little doubt of what the outcome is. This becomes the least of Magneto’s worries as the challenge waiting after this proves to be a deadlier threat than expected.

The closing act is filled with big action. It’s fitting for the grand return of Mutankind’s loyal defender. Once the closing pages unfold, there is no question that a new player has entered the fight, wherever humanity and Orchis is ready or not.

Ewing shows Magneto’s struggles to find his identity after his return. Can he go back to his old ways or has his experiences humbled him? It is a great conflict that carries through the chapter. With every action, readers see the different sides come out.

Once the big threat of the issue arrives, Magento is forced to conquer his demons to finish the obstacle. Knowing that the world he has returned to is vastly different, the writing gives the impression of elf-awareness with the world watching. This can only add more intrigue going into the final moments of Krokoan time.

Vecchio, Curiel and Aburtov give a stoic return for Magento in many visuals for this chapter. The opening full page panel sets the tone for the rest of the book. Readers get a before and after with the surrounding soldiers that leaves no question of the brutality of wronging Magento.

Emotions run high as the final battle begins. The art team unleashed Magneto’s rage for this fight with a strong full page visual. Even with the full parting page, the art team leaves readers knowing that Magneto is back without question.

The question of identity haunts the return of the Master Of Magnetism. With Ewing displaying all the emotions, Magento’s true self emerges. The art team delves into multiple full page images fitting for a legend’s grand homecoming.

The chapter begins with a young Moira McTaggert. With the reveal of her mutant abilities, McTaggert has been a factor in the birth and fall of the Krokoan Era. The narration leads readers on an insight into Moira’s plans. As she plans to celebrate making into her 13th birthday, Moira heads to a meadow from her house.

However, someone is waiting for her there. That person is one Charles Xavier. Keeping the rest of the surrounding area at bay, Xavier plans on doing the unthinkable. If Moria is eliminated before her powers emerge, then the Krokoan Era never exists!

Meanwhile in the future, Moira X connects with a Dominion about a deadly proposition. Readers watch as the deal is presented. What options does Moira have?

This builds into pressure moments for all parties involved. Can Xavier’s team hold off threats long enough for the mission to be completed. What about Moria’s proposal? Events unfold that prove there are no easy answers.

With the gravity of the consequences enormous, Xavier makes a call that potentially changes everything. The question is Will it be the one readers are expecting or not? The final page sets course for a monumental march into the closing issues of this story. Brace yourself. It’s only going to get crazier from here.

Gillen wastes no time diving into the most extreme action of this series. Xavier’s plan is drastic and feels desperate. It mirrors how much the dream of Krokoa has been broken. The writing never lets this point escape. The dialogue hits to illustrate the severity of Xavier’s plan.

Gillen mixes in great side points to add more anxiousness. With the battle taking place in multiple times, the excitement is paced well to hit its mark. The resolution is not so cut and dry per say. There are big ramifications. This builds towards a strong final act. The closing page shifts events for Xavier’s plans which means nothing but win. This is arguably the strongest issue of the series thus far.

Silva and Curiel never let readers loose sight of the impact of Xavier’s actions. The initial moment he confronts a young Moira is gifted with a perfect full page image. The panel set-ups are simplistic but exemplify the matter at hand.

Xavier’s forces in the future get a great opening page as well. The near full page shot hits the acceleration involving them into the mix. Once the matter of Moira is resolved (for better or worse), the imagery carries that momentum into the final pages. With a bold final page, the art team drops a huge exclamation point on the chapter that is sure to have fans talking.

With the fate of the past and future at stake, Xavier’s desperate action takes center stage in this engaging chapter. Gillen constructs a complex dilemma of moral and ethical consequence with the writing. Silva, Curiel and Cowles give readers much to savor with the incredible images. The end is almost here and readers won’t be able to wait to see how this all ends.

Ever since the Hellfire Gala, Orchis has been running rough shot over the X-Men and mutantkind as a whole. The evil organization is on the cusp of eliminating Xavier’s dream. Standing in their way is a skeleton crew of X-Men leaving it all on the line to survive.

This chapter begins with Juggernaut dragging a weakened Krokoa through a desert land. Usually Cain Marko is unstoppable. This is until an adamantium harpoon is impaled in his leg. Orchis soldiers have arrived in reworked SHIELD transportation and begin to open fire on the pair. Juggernaut is doing all he can to fight back but the situation looks grim. Luckily, help is on the way….

Elsewhere in France, Cyclops has escaped execution due to the interference of Orchis R&D director Dr. Alia Gregor. The pair heads into the underground area of the Seine river. They’re greeted by Orchis forces which Cyclops handles with ease. Magik appears and provides transportation to a familiar spot X-Men fans know all too well.

Readers don’t have time to process that as events shift back to a major thorn in the X-Men’s side: Dr. Stasis (A version of Mr. Sinister). Stasis is on the run from Emma Frost with the life of Firestar hanging in the balance.

Will Emma and company save Firestar? What does Cyclops and Dr. Gregor find in their new surroundings? Talk about moving parts, there’s a whole portion of the book focused on Apocalypse that we haven’t discussed!

Trust me when I say there is a whole mix of drama and action that will lock readers in. This is classic X-Men storytelling. The final pages will leave readers in suspense as events shift into an uncharted direction. This series is living up to the hype as an event! Get ready for a knockout chapter!

Duggan gives fans much to be excited with this latest installment. The Cyclops storyline has been a major driver for this series. The dynamic between Dr. Gregor and Summers has made for an unlikely pairing. Duggan gives them a solid meeting point to grow from. The conclusion of their pairing is a shocking twist to readers.

The moment fans will be most talking about is the Emma Frost vs. Stasis drama. Duggan paces events off with a strong pace that never lets a moment slip by. The conclusion is well done. It plays right into the characters involved, including a moment of “inadequately” that will get a quick laugh. Juggling so many characters, Duggan gives all the stories enough time to grow and hook fans in. The ending only raises stakes higher heading into the final stretch.

Werneck and Morales take the art duties for this issue. The Cyclops escape comes off dramatically with a solid near full page panel to showcase his powers. The Emma/Stasis drama ranges from heart-stopping action to split panels building towards a full page image demonstrating a devastating attack. It’s fallout mixes in small humor that can only be done by Emma Frost with a memorable reunion to end with. The final pages will shock and catch readers off-guard. It caps off a chapter that doesn’t delay in speeding things into the next phase.

FINAL POINT: 9

The X-Men do not hear a final bell as their last stand vs. Orchis continues! Duggan balances the dramatic atmosphere with big moments. The art team of Werneck, Morales, Valenza and Lanham give readers much to enjoy with strong visuals leaving a lasting imprint heading into the next phase.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT 2024)

With two major hits coming via Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Black Panther, fans have been checking out the new vision of Marvel’s heroes. The latest installment has much hype behind it. It’s not only due to the franchise but the visionary creator steering the project.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham looks to redefine what fans know of the Children of The Atom.

Let’s take a deeper dive at what is unfolding here.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment)

The issue begins with Kirigaya Minami Middle School in Japan. HISAKO ICHIKI is walking through the school grounds for graduation. A classmate runs over to her and gives her a “second button.” Readers find out that symbolizes a crush. She claims it’s from a boy. When Hisako looks over, no one is there. Thinking it’s a rank, she looks at the button. Attached to it is a note. It reads asking Hisako to meet up at the temple behind the school.

Hisako goes and sees someone familiar: her friend Tsubasa. However, she tells herself the vision isn’t real. Suddenly, a shadowy figure emerges. It hands Hisako a Red OMAMORI (charm pendant). The figure begins to reference Tsubasa.

Readers find out the tragic tale involving him and his death. With the figure pressing the issue, Hisako begins to flashback to memories. The overwhelming feelings push her to run away. As she’s peddling on her bicycle, Hisako comes right into the line of a moving car!

What happens next sets Hisako on a path of discovery. Who is this mysterious figure bringing up the past? What is the secret behind her OMAMORI? The story does head into darker territory as Hisako is confronted with the shadow figure’s next move. The final image leaves no doubt this isn’t your typical X-Men story.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Peach Momoko, Zack Davisson and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment)

Momoko sets the stage for a very different X-Men tale. Hisako is written with many levels to her character. When readers see her first, she is an outsider that has gone through some trauma. The confrontation with the Shadow figure (Shadow King?) drives home her broken state. Dealing with Tsubasa’s death at young age, the writing reflects the devasting effects of that event.

Once the issue shifts into the pendant’s secret, the story leans into Hisako solving the mystery. The confrontation is very dark and emotional. Its’ fallout mirrors the themes. This leaves readers with a strong sense of eerie doubt as to what lies ahead.

The art is incredible with Momoko’s unforgettable style. The introduction to the shadow figure is subtle but scene stealing. The flashback sequences paint the picture of youth innocence taken away. Tsubasa’s fate is bold and disturbing in its’ near full page panel.

The pendant’s reveal is loud with a two-page spread signifying the event. The latter portion of the chapter brings out a wide range of emotions from Hisako. It leaves readers with many questions heading into it’s next phase.

FINAL POINT: 7.8

The new vision of Marvel’s Children of the Atom delivers a darker and haunting introduction with the first chapter. Momoko brings imaginative storytelling to welcome readers into Hisako’s world. It is one that will stand out from the crowd and has plenty of room to grow further.

Mr. Sinister has always been a problem to the X-Men. In this story, he has become a problem for the entire universe. Ten years in the future, Nathaniel Essex has now ascended on a whole new plain. Essex is Enigma. Xavier failed to stop the rise to power. Left with little options, Xavier seeks to rewrite history.

The plan is simple on paper: Kill Moira McTaggert before she realizes she’s a mutant. With her powers never manifesting, the Krakoan Era never is born. It’s a desperate plan, but so are the times they live in.

This chapter begins Enigma narrating the pasts of notable key players in Mutant kind. A Young Moira. Jean Grey. Cyclops. Xavier himself. Enigma knows what they all mean to his endgame. Xavier’s moves have peaked Enigma’s interests.

Stationed on No-Place X, Xavier holds court to Rachel Summers, Rasputin IV and Cypher. Xavier lets it known that his plan is the only option left. Listening in to the conversation is a captured Mother Righteous. One of the Essex clones, Righteous shrugs off the attempts to save. Xavier answers in kind and never responds.

Readers sit back as Xavier senses the pressure of failure. Righteous’ banter with the heroes only fuels Xavier’s plans. Once the talking stops, the moves begin. The action swings into full throttle. The pace never stops until the final pages.

Once the dust settles, fans watch as two major players are set on a collision course. Who will be the last one standing? The parting images of this chapter will definitely have fans talking. Brace for the start of an epic conclusion in the making.

Gillen leans heavy into Xavier’s desperation. The conversations with Righteous support the extreme levels. Throughout the series, that has been a notable takeaway that continues to grow. There is one great one-liner about “ants and Galactus” that will leave readers caught up in the moment.

The banter with Xavier and Rasputin IV is another strong point to the issue. A conversation takes place that is heart-breaking but reflects the dire times that exist. It’s a contrast to Moira and Nimrod. With the walls caving in, Gillen writes their paranoia splendidly. It’s another key element that balances ut all the big action taking place.

Silva and Curiel present some memorable points in this story. The background narration panels tie in the past and gives a quick refresher into the pages being told. Xavier’s defiance to Righteous boastfulness was an easy connection via their facial reactions.

However, The fight sequences will be the ones most talked about. It’s big action with near-full page imagery. These spectacular visions lead readers right into the final act. With a near full page panel to close with, the art continues to encompassing the “big event” feel and running with it. This leads to all wins for the readers.

With Cyclops preparing for execution leading numerous losses, the remaining x-family try finding a way to turn things around. It seems as luck might be turning their way with an unlikely pairing striking Orchis in space!

Dr. Statis and M.O.D.O.K. sit inside Orchis’ space station. Thinking that their plans are succeeding, the mood is high. This is evident in Statis words describing impending objects coming at the station. Readers quickly see how wrong they. at is no mere object. That is Polaris wielding a Celestial skull?!

The skull attacks the ship while Polaris on-boards. This leads to more surprises as Polaris unleashes her forces onto the Orchis agents. Unleash might be the key word as Polaris lets loose a pack of the BROOD onto the ship.

Meanwhile, an Orchis ship is returning to the station with some precious cargo. Wolverine has been captured and the crew thinks they’ve jumping in the right fight. Little do they know they’ve been set up by Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine!

The action picks up as the trio lay waste to the troops. Once they connect with Polaris, their mission is clear: Stop Statis and save Firestar.

On Earth, the rest of the X-Family have their own missions to win. Everyone needs to play their part if there’s any chance to save Mutantkind.

Will they succeed? The dangers loom at every turn. Readers have a thrill-ride in their hands as more moves are made. Judging by the closing moments, a shocking twist might be the game changer moment the X-Men needed or had to avoid at all costs.

In my opinion, this felt like vintage X-Men storytelling (and that’s a BIG win)! Duggan packs in a great deal of action for this chapter. The dueling attack on Orchis in space makes some exciting sequences. Bringing Polaris into the battle in such a dramatic manner set the tone for the fight perfectly.

The side plots moved their stories forward without being lost in the shuffle. Juggling the large cast, Duggan made sure all got their time to progress. There are quite a few panels that fans can’t help but get amped up about. The closing act throws a solid swerve into the mix leading to a very intriguing close.

Werneck and Valenza construct big action throughout this issue. The debut of Polaris into the mix gets a proper full page treatment. When Wolverine gets unleashed, the coloring with the blood flying speaks volumes while being subtle. It’s throwback fighting with a classic lineup.

The interactions with the fellow mutants play very well to the reader. Emma Frost’s panel in the book is perfectly suited for her character. There’s also a Juggernaut portion that fans should rave about as well. The closing moments tie back to a previous portion of the overall story. It caps off the desperate times that the heroes live through. The closing panels add another dynamic into the mix that will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The final stand of the X-Men goes heavy with a classic feel that fans won’t want to miss. Duggan drives vintage elements of the X-Family with the great writing. Werneck and company build electric imagery fitting for the fight of their lives. With the stakes at hand, there’s no better time to watch the fall unfold.

RESURRECTION OF MAGNETO #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, desperate times call for desperate measures. This reflects the state of affairs involving Marvel’s X-Men. As Orchis makes their big move, Xavier and the remaining members of Mutant-kind are pushed to their breaking point. The events cause a dangerous choice to be made to ensure victory. The choice is complex. Should the most dangerous X-Men villain be brought back from the dead to left save the living? Readers are about to find out.

The chapter begins with Magneto standing away from the reader. His words haunt as Magento speaks “Ororo, I was wrong”. The events sift back to Storm as she wakes up from the nightmare. Her lover, Craig, tries to console her. Living on Arakko, Storm is off world but knows of the dire events of the attack of the Hellfire Gala.

Storm knows that Mutant-Kind needs more help. They need Magneto. Unfortunately, he isn’t alive. Magneto sacrificed himself in besting Uranos. Denying the resurrection process of Krakoa, pulling this task off will not be easy. It will be lose to impossible.

Storm crashes the Kadesh base and confronts Dr. Adam Brashear aka Blue Marvel and Taaia. Storm explains her plan. Surprisingly, there is no push-back. Marvel seems intrigued at defying the odds. He leads Storm into a portal room. While powering it up, Marvel is explaining how this is all going to play out into an area reated by the Scarlet Witch.

Knowing the costs, Storm jumps through the portal without waiting for approval. Readers find out the afterlife is a very unstable environment. An old friend appears to greet Ororo on the other side. The reception kickstarts a series of events that wind further into answering the lingering question of is this all worth it? The final image grants an insight to that answer leading readers into what lies ahead.

Ewing presents the weight of Ororo’s mission with great desperation and heroics. The first portion of the book moves very quickly to get right tote heart of the matter. Once Ororo makes the jump, the story speeds right into the frantic instability of the afterlife.

The initial conflict grants readers a break in the drama. It’s fallout reaffirms Storm’s determination and grit about achieving the impossible. The journey dive into a few uncharted spots. Once readers arrive in the final pages, it leads to a small Deja vu moment. It ties back into the overall consensus theme of this unstable world Storm now stands in. The closing moment delivers on giving more clues to the mission before bowing out. Rest assured, there’s more complexity to this story which can only lead t a bigger payoff.

Vecchio and Curiel drop a few stellar images of the afterlife on readers with this opening chapter. The full page shot of Magneto starting into the distance hits the mark on the reflection of his choices. The moments with Blue Marvel and Storm balance each other out with their different mannerisms. Storm is driven to get going, while Marvel is constantly assessing the situation.

The afterlife opens with a strong two-page image. This is followed by fight sequences that are bolt and impactful. The fractured full page image of Storm flying in this moment elevates the overall feel of the battle. The closing pages are ack to back full page image that bring the mission at hand right to the forefront. Very solid initial outing that will only become more wild with the evolving world Storm fights through now.

The impossible is challenged with the future of Mutant-kind waiting in the wings in an ambitious first chapter. Ewing doesn’t delay in keeping a rapid pace to move Storm’s mission forward. Vecchio and Curiel providing lasting impressions with the images to give readers quite the tale to follow in the Krakoan Era’s downfall.

Events here tale place before Wolverine: sabretooth War and the bookend series for the end of the Krakoan Era.

The issue opens up at X-Force’s hidden base at the north pole. A sniper is looking through an infra-red lens on his target. In the crossfire is Omega Red. The man behind the gun: Hank McCoy aka Beast!

Last readers had seen Beast, he was committing crimes with Mutantkind’s benefit as the method behind the madness. With one shot, Red is taken off the board. McCoy makes his way inside the covert team’s home. Sneaking around, Beast makes his way to the computers, looking for something unknown at the time.

Meanwhile, Sage and Black Tom Cassidy are conversing in another room. Alarms tip off Sage of their former director’s return. The rest of the unit run to find Beast is armored up with Krokoan Flora shielding. With an ominous warning, Beast leaves with what he wanted.

All the while, Sage is sitting in front of a sealed room. When Wolverine approaches her, the secrets behind the door are revealed. SAGE HAS WHAT BEHIND THE DOOR?!

This leads to a plan that if it fails, spells certain door. Readers sit back and watch Sage sell her idea. The fallout brings mixed reaction as it is a bold one. However, the closing moments prove the best intentions sometimes don’t bring the best results. Get ready for a wild ride as X-Force vs. Beast begins their battle!

What a creative concept Percy brings to the masses with this story. Hank McCoy is a character of extremes. When he’s good, he is a jovial force of good. When he’s evil, he is downright dangerous. The writing for this issue shows readers both sides to his character. The opening pages show his ruthlessness as to getting what he wants. The good appears later with one classic line that is such a well-placed throwback.

This plays into what the team is dealing with for conflict. Knowing what McCoy has meant to the unit, Percy writes this as a personal attack on Wolverine and company. The counter thrown illustrates many sides to the polarizing mutant. McCoy’s dialogue plays into the unknown call of the mission. There really is no in-between to where things can go from here but it will have readers talking with much enjoyment.

The art sets a strong tempo with McCoy taking out Omega early. Gill talks readers through the break-in with wordless panels. McCoy’s body language speaks volumes here. The full page of Sage’s reveal hits readers with many reactions as to what this could all lead to. There’s a great two-page spread introducing the unit to the plan’s variable. At this stage, the pace picks up leading to an interesting final image to set this series in a whole new direction.

The X-Men’s most dangerous unit must find a way to stop their former director at all costs. Percy’s creative writing injects an unknown factor into a formal mission. Gill’s imagery shows the complexity of the choice made and the uncertainty of where it heads now. This will be one fans are going to be talking about.

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT - 2024)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this edition, the Krakoan Era’s last stand begins via Marvel Entertainment. As the era started with two series (House of X/Powers of X), it concludes with another pair of stories that will redefine the Mutant age. In the present, the Mutants have to deal with the Fall of the House. As for the future, they need to deal with the Rise of Powers.

Rise of the Powers of X #1 by Kieron Gillen, R.B. Silva, David Curiel, Clayton Cowles sets the stage for the X-Men’s final attempt to stop Nimrod once and for all. Let’s dive in and see what’s happening now.

Ten years in the future, Nimrod and Omega sentinel are standing over a fallen diamond Emma Frost with destruction all around them. With Sentinel’s help, one fate has been avoid. Nimrod is ready to crown victory but Sentinel has other thoughts. With little resistance left, Can the X-Men find another way to win?

Meanwhile, Gambit and Mystique are following the plans of Professor X at the Henry Gyrich Memorial Detention Center. Knowing Emma has fallen, the pair play their part. It’s not without a fan moment that is fitting considering their family history. With a noble sacrifice, both Gambit and Mystique are dead but their mission accomplished.

The information they were sent to get was worth the sacrifices if it means an end to the hell they live in. It has been transferred to Charles Xavier. Professor X is camped out at the broken S.W.O.R.D station in space. Leading a team comprised of Iron Man (An A.I. Version of Tony Stark), ShadowTiger (Kate Pryde), Captain Krokoa (Kamala Khan) and Wolverine, Xavier sends them to Phobos with a simple mission: Find Mr. Sinister who’s being held there.

With a final launch, the heroes make their way to Phobos. Nimrod and company are in pursuit to intervene. What comes next will challenge fate. It’s fallout transcends back to the present. With time running out, choices are made and a big revelation of how things could end. The closing moment will have fans talking as the end is finally near.

From the initial page, Gillen establishes the grave stakes involved with no hesitation. Nimrod’s blind assumption of victory plays well with Sentinel’s worry of failure.

The fighting spirit of the X-Men shines through each scene they’re in. The personal moment with Gambit and Mystique’s final goodbye is perfect for fans that have questioned her feeling about her son-in-law.

The latter portion of the book dives into Xavier’s last play knowing what failure brings. His team of X-Men are aware of the stakes and the writing mirrors their will to win or die. Wolverine has some great lines before leading into a huge moment in the book.

The fallout of the event plays off well as the story transitions back to present time. The ultimate option is a stunning one but shows at what lengths Xavier is willing to descend to for the betterment of Mutant-Kind.

Silva and Curiel construct a hellish environment fitting of Nimrod’s terror. The opening full page makes a big splash as Nimrod stands in the center of the aftermath of his work. The final moments of Gambit and Mystique work to give readers an emotional hit before diving into their final calls.

The Phobos panels and fallout give the issue a heavy aura as the event is that catastrophic if Nimrod wins. there is a great mix of full or near-full page panels that exemplify to gravity of the situation. It’s fallout in present time shows the wear this all has had on the survivors. Knowing what Xavier’s back-up plan is, the closing image is strongly detailed as there is no turning back from what’s next.

The fate of the future lies in the past with a solid start to the end of Mutantkind’s days. With layered writing backed up by spectacular visuals, Xavier leads a desperate attempt to save the world. Will the ends justify the means?

WOLVERINE #41 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the X-Men world is in disarray. The end of the Krakoan era has started. The utopia is gone. In its’ ashes stands uncertainty and chaos. If it’s chaos in the Mutant World, chances are SABRETOOTH isn’t far behind.

The vicious warrior was banished to the pit of Krokoa for disobeying the rules about killing humans. With the fall of the island, he is now free and focused on revenge against his most hated rival.

Wolverine #41 by Benjamin Percy, Victor LaValle, Geoff Shaw, Cory Smith, Oren Junior, Alex Sinclair and Cory Petit kicks off the “most violent Wolverine story ever told”. Let’s take a closer look and see how the war’s first shot is fired.

The issue begins with Wolverine stalking Sabretooth. Wolvie is clawed to the ceiling of Orchis Station Five. The monologue walks readers through the plan to strike. Once he leaps, Wolverine quickly realizes he walked right into a trap.

Sabretooth looks up from killing what appears to be other X-Men. As he holds Wolverine by the throat, it is revealed that this isn’t Logan. This “Wolverine” is “Camo”, the Sabretooth of Earth 33441. The setting is Sabretooth standing in the center of a bloody fighting pit. Other Sabretooths from other multiverses sit and watch as Victor Creed of 616 holds court. He is preparing the army he has acquired for an attack on Krokoa.

Meanwhile on Earth at the North Pole, Black Tom Cassidy picks up wind of a Stark Sentinel attack on Krokoa. Kid Omega takes off to handle the threat solo. Once he arrives, readers quickly find out there’s a welcome party for him that makes a bold statement.

How will Wolverine deal with the oncoming assault? Being cut off from the rest of the X-World, Wolvie has never been more alone in his thoughts. Can he pull it together to stop what Sabretooth is planning? If the final image in any indication, the “best at what he does” might not be enough to what is coming…..

Pearcy and LaValle brings out the unhinged evil of Sabretooth with this initial entry. The viciousness displayed leaves no doubt of how much of a threat he is. Add the creative idea of tapping into the multiverse of versions of himself and fans need to brace for impact. The first attack is dealt with precision. It plays more into an underlying theme displayed by the legendary X-Man.

The writing shows Wolverine in a reflective light. Seeing Krokoa fall affects him in a somber and anxious way. The interactions with the other characters in the North Pole show a sense of “goodbye” as the end is finally drawing near. This all changes as Sabretooth makes his presence felt with the closing moments. It’s a disturbing idea to create but is needed to show how deadly this game will be between the two.

Shaw, Smith and Junior bring the carnage to life with the opening salvo. The scenes with Sabretooth “teaching” the others his plan makes a bold statement. The brutality shown holds nothing back to the readers. No better example than with the “celebration” of the first attack. It’s a disturbing full page picture that leads to more gruesome panels.

The moments when Wolverine banters with his fellow teammates and family show a different look to him. This more humbling panels only add more fuel to Sabretooth’s plans. The final page is a shocking image that sets a high tempo for things to come.

The first die is cast as the bloodiest feud in Marvel history prepares to write another chapter. Solid writing and strong imagery set the stage for violence and pain. Who will be left standing at the end is anyone’s guess but buckle in for the ride!
