HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #22 BY Tate Brombal, Antonio Fuso, Miquel Muerto and AndWorld Design (Series Development: James Tynion IV and Designs and Development: Werther Dell’Edera) BOOM! Studios

Sunny Boucher’s story shifts dynamics as the driver for this chapter. The writing portrays him as a child looking for direction. The dynamic with Jolie wavers from loyal to uncertain. If not for her blind confidence, Jolie would see Sunny’s swaying opinions. This builds for a strong pay-off later.

The final act will hit longtime readers more than ones who jump in on the new arc. Knowing the back story between Jace and Sunny, it is an emotional moment that leads into a stronger one unfolding. The set-up for the final page works to carry the tension right to the next chapter.

The art doesn’t steer away of the pull on Sunny. The opening image of Sunny standing by the carousel sets an eerie tone. With the word bubbles surrounding him, the fear starts creeping in the young boy. The series of panels with Jolie “recruiting” Sunny leads readers through her delusional methods. This builds towards a solid middle act and striking final page.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

The last stand of Jace Boucher speeds forward with a solid chapter. The writing shows the confliction in a character who’s still finding their way. The art gives readers a sense of the emotional toll being taken. Mix them together and you have an issue worth checking out at the Comic Shops this week.

Zdarsky sets forth the final voyage for the diner crew with a strong tale of challenging fears. The emotions range from anger to worry amongst the crew after Francis’ choice. The creativity pours out from this issue as well. With the issue’s antagonist, Zdarsky challenges each character to face their darkest fears.

Taking the conflict to such a level keeps readers a new perspective heading into the closing issues. The final moments kick events into high gear coming to a screeching halt on the last panel. The story has been an excellent read thus far and shows no signs of letting up now.

Loo and Alleyne focus on the emotional reactions of what is happening for this chapter. From Cynthia’s rage to God’s “even keel” calmness, the variations of reactions provides the readers an insight into the conflict. The secret of the Triangle is given half page panels which amplifies its moment. Its’ resolution is another great half page panel that closes solidly.

The major antagonist makes a grand entrance to the group late in the issue. The panels add a haunting element to his attack. The smaller panels (like the 9 panel page) connects the dark overtones of what is happening as the initial strike is made. The closing image caps off the beginning of the end on a high note. It’s another example of great storytelling that this series is known for.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

GOD has entered the playing field.

As Ian, Joy and Andrea converse in the diner, they quickly realize they are not alone. GOD is inside and making milkshakes? Ian is not believing the stranger is how he claims to be. Readers see a subtle way of proving the claim via Blood Milkshakes.

Ian still denies the claims. He thinks this figure might have more to do with The Takers. God tries explaining more in detail. A new thought is posed where not one being but rather all Humanity is God now. Ian isn’t exactly on board (still) but the rest of the group clearly has warmed up to the notion. From this conversation, a new member looks ready to join the group in their rescue attempt.

The conversation is interrupted by figures representing the Takers. With the action escalating, does the mysterious stranger sway fate in their favor?

With a hasty escape, the group reunites with Francis and Cynthia. It is at this moment, the dynamic changes forever. What course does the family now walk towards? As one’s past comes to light, the rescue mission appears to begin, but not without a hefty cost. Zdarsky throws readers off their game with the introduction of a major player. Bringing in GOD to assist the team demonstrates a new look at the set-up of the story. The explanation of reasons and motives are an easy follow to readers. It also allows new directions into where things lead. God’s story provides a huge set-up for when the group escapes the diner.

Featuring a stand-out character in the spotlight, Zdarsky elevates their story tremendously. The effects form this raise the stakes of the final act many notches. Zdarsky taps into the emotional connections these characters have to completely bring the small wins crashing down. The final moments of this chapter drop a huge blow to all parties involved, lighting the match for an explosive final run.

Loo and Alleyne feature a few different looks to God’s introduction. From Ian’s disbelief to Joy and Andrea’s amazement of his “creation”, it provides a few light-hearted moments before cranking up on the emotions. Once the group arrives back at the forest retreat, the tone shifts and focuses on the actions and feelings of a notable character.

The personal panels showcase a different side before ushering in an action that kicks off the conclusion. The imagery perfectly covers what each connecting character is feeling once the end begins. It exemplifies how there is more to this story than just supernatural beings. It’s about the caring each major character has shown for their small group and how important the final act is to sacrifice so much.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions as a heavenly figure makes their presence known in another fantastic issue. Zdarsky’s emotionally layered writing raises the stakes with Loo, Alleyne and Cvetkovic crafting the calm before the upcoming final play. There’s no reason this series shouldn’t be in your collection by the end of New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A woman named Ingrid is walking through a forest landscape. The narration leads readers to believe it is a dream. She is wakes up after being enamored to a cold reality. However, it appears that the dream might not be done as a figure lurks trying to connect with her on a physical and sexual manner.

Suddenly, Ingrid wakes up to her husband Roland, a bailiff, who’s trying to have her accompany him to a trial. Ingrid doesn’t want to go and this causes Roland to storm off. In response, Ingrid heads into the forest and looks overhead at her village with a roaring fire. It is no ordinary fire. It appears to be where witches were burnt at the stake.

The fire snaps her back into the dream-like world. Ingrid sees herself as the one in the fire. She’s snapped back to the present by Maja and her son. The conversation shifts to who was being punished.

Later that evening, Ingrid sits by a fire as Roland returns. As she tries to initiate passion, he scoffs it away. As they sleep, the mysterious stranger reappears in her dreams, connecting with her on a level Roland cannot. When she wakes, Roland is not as understanding to what she is describing.

How does Ingrid process her dreams? After the recent trial and reactions from the village, her thoughts wander. As her dreams intensify, Ingrid becomes entrapped between two worlds. The journey now begins that will have readers locked in until the next chapter drops.

SOMNA #1 by Tula Lotay, Becky Cloonan, Lee Loughridge, Dee Cunniffe and Lucas Gattoni (Credit: DSTLRY - Art featured: Becky Cloonan)

The writing breaks down Ingrid into multiple stories. The first is the gruff relationship with Roland. The mood is tense and cold as their interactions lead to mounting tension with little middle ground. Ingrid comes across as a character yearning for more, which drives her to lean into her dreamscape.

Her path leads to the question of “Is perception really reality” as Ingrid walks a fine line throughout this issue. Knowing there’s a hint of danger in her dreams, the writing reflects her wanting more than she has and how scary that could be. As the story rolls into its’ closing portion, readers see how Ingrid inches closer to the edge. After the event transpires, there is a sense of looming fear of that should transpire next which leaves a lasting impression.

The art duties are split into two distinct areas. Cloonan handles the present time, featuring the interactions with the village. The mood is that of trepidation as the burning trial lingers on Ingrid’s mind. The body language of Ingrid and Roland shows disfunction and frustration on all parities.

This only adds to the significance of the dreamscape. Lotay paints a vivid landscape of wonder and anxiousness as Ingrid’s interactions with the figure intensify with each page. The art captures the raw emotions of the encounters bringing readers along to sense what Ingrid wants and sense her fear in the consequences. It all ties together with a striking final vision leading to more thrilling drama yet to be seen.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Cloonan and Lotay welcome readers into the complex world of Ingrid with a visually impressive debut. Ingrid’s haunting dreams battle the harsh reality of her world with excellent art and writing. The layers of this mystery are just being peeled back so readers won’t want to miss jumping on-board now to see where things lead from here.

The story begins with birds known as rooks flying around a graveyard. Behind guarding stone angels guarding a room, the sky has a red moon. A monstrous figure walks from the doorway with the angles weeping. As it approaches a gateway, the creature shapeshifts and flies away into the night sky.

The scenery moves to a castle on a hill. Inside lies a woman appearing on her deathbed. As she looks out the window, the creature shifts into a human form. Known as Darius Ravenscar, he kneels at her side. Readers sense there is a strong connection to the pair with the woman asking to relive their past. The stranger obliges and the story kicks into gear.

With imagery of a woman casting a spell into a fire deep in the forest, Ravenscar awakes inside his bed. Franticly running late, he makes his way into the city of Eborvik, towards the castle. Inside, he sees a woman named Princess Seraphina playing her harp.

The noticable admiration fills the scenes but there is one person not happy with what is unfolding. King Sitric, Lord of the Four Vales, orders Ravenscar to leave.

While leaving the castle, events start to unfold that drastically change the path of the story. What happens to Darius when he leaves? How does his life change? Readers see there is more than the King interfering with what Darius cares for. Fate has intervened in an unlikely way. Harding paints a dark and complex story with her writing debut. Ravenscar instantly comes across as a tortured soul when he debuts. The elements of horror and hope dance through the dialogue as both he and Seraphina play into a world they hoped to have found together but never did.

The backstory of the pair dives into the brooding conflict with the King. Emotions run high as his majesty is determined not to allow events to grow further. The direction of the book shifts after the castle into unlikely places. This is where Harding’s writing goes up another level, connecting the doomed couple into fleeting moments of happiness. It’s these events that feel even further away once the closing moments happen. Once the chapter close, there is much left for readers to return and see how things play out.

The art reflects the moods and themes portrayed from the beginning. The full-page introduction image of Darius creates a bold debut locking readers in. This is also matched buy another full page panel of Darius after events have changed his future.

The use of coloring adds another layer to the saga at hand. Being a black and white book, once the red coloring is used, it signifies a change. It also announces the Rooks hovering overhead and where they connect to the shift in moments. The book is detailed with emotion and striking visuals. It has a great deal going on but paced enough where nothing feels out of place. The final panel brings the book to a screeching halt but leaves no doubt for things to come.

Others haven’t played their cards just yet as the world they know has been turned upside down.

This issue picks up where Joy is continuing the vigilante ways patrolling the streets. Ian looks on from outside the closed Diner. Readers can tell he appears troubled with what’s unfolding.

Meanwhile back in the Forrest colony, Cynthia and Frank are discussing the fallout of events. They break away for a quiet moment of normalcy. It’s a change of pace that both are enjoying considering what has transpired.

The story shifts to Joy on patrol. She jumps into a fight over a woman between two men. Joy’s interference isn’t welcomed and a scuffle breaks out. Joy handles events but some of the women watching events play out are also not happy with Joy.

Zdarsky brings readers back with a well-paced return for Ian and company. Having Cynthia act as a narrator of sorts reflects the mood of everyone since the last issue concluded. The tone is one of being worn down and wondering what’s next. The moments with Frank give this story a “normal” break before diving back into the supernatural. The ramifications of losing Alex weigh heavy on the rest of the group.

Seeing how everyone is dealing with that loss demonstrates a wide range of emotions. Seeing where Ian is leaning towards solving their problem is something readers can sense the consequences of those actions. It all ties together with the final panels, setting events in motion for a memorable farewell.

Loo and Alleyne bring the human emotions out of Cynthia and Frank right from the beginning. Their panels are a nice transition in comparison to what follows after. The fight between Joy and her combatants lead readers into a bigger payout later when Andrea joins the party. The art mirrors the mood of coping with loss as the issue progresses.

Ian’s frustrations stand out as he lets readers in onto where his thinking is leading to. The concluding pages give a great surprise to what has been an excellent return for the team of the All-Nighter Diner.

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re returning to the spin-off series stemming from Boom! Studios’ Something is Killing the Children. With House Of Slaughter, the spotlight is shinning on a specific character of the SIKTC. All the previous tales have been excellent reads, following the “slow burn” drama method fans have come to know and admire. With a brand new arc just beginning, the focus is on Bait, the White Mask with no arms.

House Of Slaughter #17 by Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, and AndWorld Design along with Series development from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera continues the tale of “Alabaster”. Let’s take a closer look and see how the story is progressing, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Erie, Pennsylvania is the home of the latest mission involving the secret Order of St. George. With at least 14 dead in a small town, Bait has been sent undercover into a foster home to start investigating what is the cause of these killings. The move might be one that other younger members of the order question, but there s much more to this White Mask than anyone realizes.

This issue opens up with Bait waking up in his new surroundings. Making his way down the stairs, the foster house residents are all waiting. The meeting becomes a touch awkward with Bait keeping his emotions in check. Even with a playful welcome is given, Bait is thinking of taking out his “greeter”.

Things shift gears as another member of the house catches Bait’s attention: Nannette. Bait is distracted by her presence but regroups to focus on the mission at hand. Someone in the house is connected to the case. Someone is going to be exposed.

Readers see Bait go into action. What does he encounter in his travels? Why is he so infatuated in Nan? There are many questions laid out as small clues are revealed to the overall picture coming into view.

Johns delves into Bait’s character for quite a few standout moments. The interactions meeting the house residents plays into his mysteriousness. It isn’t until Nan makes her appearance that Bait gives any inkling of emotion. The lone action sequence adds more fuel on that building fire of Bait’s true feelings.

Johns mixes in well-placed breaks to have readers guessing as to what’s a flashback or a dream. The slow pacing gives the character moments time to breathe and build up to a memorable parting page. It’s a great send off and one that looks to be one Bait might not be ready to handle.

Cadonici and Segala mix the moods of the story with perfect use of coloring. The blue shading of Bait’s “greeting” inside the house makes for a solid connection to the readers. Whenever Nan appears, the lighting shifts to an orange-red glow some would think is Bait’s emotions reflecting to the readers.

The action portions play out fast-moving and capped with a great two page flowing spread. The closing images are subtle in comparison but leave nothing behind heading into the story’s next phase.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The latest chapter of “Alabaster” keeps reader’s attention with excellent storytelling. Johns’ writing starts peeling back the layers of Bait’s character while the art team mixes in different coloring to lead the readers into the many levels of the mysterious White Mask. Don’t miss this book on New Comic Book Day!

KILL YOUR DARLINGS #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic boom review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this edition, we’re checking out a new series coming out from Image Comics by way of KLC Press. The imprint has been making some noise as of late with series like Vanish and The Schlub winning over fans at the comic shops. Now, the latest series from this line is ready to make its debut.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS #1 by ETHAN S. PARKER, GRIFFIN SHERIDAN, BOB QUINN and JOHN J. HILL looks to keep the hot streak of hit series going. Let’s take a deeper dive into this premier issue, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins in 1692. A young girl is tied to a stake, pleading for her life. The mob watching isn’t welcoming the idea. Readers look on as the girl’s pleads fall on deaf ears as the stage is hit on fire.

The story shifts gears to a brighter time with an army of armored animals ready to brace for the fight ahead. They are addressing their queen, who is fully prepared to lead her troops into battle. As she unsheathes her blade, the time period jumps to 1995 where an eight year old girl named Rose is playing with her stuffed animals. Her “quest” leads her to where her mother is handling bills. Rose asks her mother to join in on her “fight” but real-world problems are taking a higher precedent.

As the battle winds up and Rose returns home from school the next day, she’s looking to play again. However, there is nothing giving a happy vibe to Rose’s world on this day. Something happens this go-around that no one is expecting. Rose is transported into her fantasy realm. This trip, things have gone very grim.

What happened to “The Kingdom Of Rosewood”? How does Rose handle this latest threat? The journey just begins as the lines blur between imagination and reality. Even when the story starts taking off, the final pages leave no room for mis-interpretations as the mystery begins to change directions before it starts.

Parker and Sheridan weave quite the engaging tale with this debut issue. The pacing gives enough balance to where Rose’s worlds of reality and fantasy can make their marks while keeping readers guessing. The book kicks into high gear with the actions of one fateful night.

At that point, the writing duo play into the fairytale aspects with the “big bad” slowly making their Prescence felt. One can guess this ties into the beginning moments but (as with every great story), readers will have to wait and see the connection there. The closing moments give a chilling close to what is sure to be a saga like no other.

Quinn and Hill balance the light hearted imagination moments with the dark and brooding panels with ease. The team constructs an imaginative world that conceals the dangers lying ahead. Once the moment where Rose sees her “kingdom” come crashing around her, the art takes a swift change in tone to reflect the growing terrors unfolding.

The prime examples of this are Rose’s drawings. With the use of full page panels, the truth of her world have turned grim and violent. The art builds the heightened fear up and adds more to the shocking final page. It’s very creative in set-up and fans will be impressed with what they see.

HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #16 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Spiraling out of the pages of the award winning Something is Killing The Children, House of Slaughter has carving its own spot as must-read stories on New Comic Book Day. The solo stories based in the SIKTC world has been winning over fans with each run. Now with a brand new arc and creative team, the series is ready to feature a certain character ready for the spotlight!

House Of Slaughter #16 by Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, and AndWorld Design along with Series development from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera is hitting the Local Comic Shops this week. Let’s see how the latest tale kicks off, shall we?

House Of Slaughter #16 - Creative: Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, and AndWorld Design along with Series development from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera (Credit: Boom! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A monster is reeking havoc. A group of White Masks have arrived on the scene. They are searching for the main point of the monster’s base. One White Mask breaks away from the plan and is caught in the monster’s grasp. Once one of their group goes down, two call a formation and ask for the bait to be brought out.

The story shifts to where a group of young White masks are enjoying some down time at the Order of St. George when Cecilia Slaughter interrupts their time. There’s one big reason for her appearance. She is adding the White Mask known as Bait to the mission in Erie, Pennsylvania. Bait had his arms amputated.

The other masks banter amongst themselves not knowing why Bait gets to be selected. Readers soon find out as he is updated on the mission at hand.

What exactly is happening to cause a rising body count? Why is Bait selected for this? How does the Order of St. George tie in with this case? Readers begin the journey into this latest mystery with a fantastic starting point.

Johns hits the ground running with setting the foundation of where this new venture is leading. Seeing the reactions after Bait was selected for the mission added to the mystique of his character. Johns also factors in a great comparison of Billiards and Alabaster. Showcasing a piece of the Orders’ history in such a manner is a fun way to peel back a hidden layer of their past. Pacing gave every portion room to let each segment breathe. Much like anything in the SIKTC line, just enough is revealed without exposing the true nature of any plot. The same can be said here with a well-crafted debut chapter.

Cadonici and Segala mix in personal reactions with the terrifying theme of the story with the visuals here. Right form the beginning, the altercation with the monster and White Masks make a big statement. Bait’s eyes speak volumes about what is happening around him. This is balanced by the reaction of the young group after his selection. The banter about him leads readers into thinking how important he is to breaking this case open. This plays into the final arc of this issue, where the calm before the storm reigns down on readers closing the beginning of what is sure to be another classic HoS saga.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The latest phase of the hit spin-off series from SIKTC doesn’t skip a beat presenting a captivating kickoff. Johns, Cadonici and the team highlight a White Mask’s trek into danger with solid writing and artwork. The story of Bait has only just begun but it is one you won’t want to miss.

GRIM #12 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, the coolest book at the LCS has returned for another arc via BOOM! Studios. The story of Jessica Harrow came back with a big return last month. Now with things looking very dire, an unexpected offer was made that could literally change everything.

GRIM #12 from Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano ushers in the next chapter of the latest story. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s going on, shall we?

GRIM #12 from Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Credit: Boom! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

Currently, life for Jessica Harrow isn’t exactly going all so well. After a series of events following the deadly battle between The End and Death, people stopped dying. This lead to the Reaper’s powers starting to fade.

With no Death, Adira (Current ruler of the Afterlife & Jessica’s aunt) has been trying to avoid an uprising from the reapers while eliminating the threat to her position as ruler. She made Jessica the prime target for blame. After an assistance from Annabel (a reaper with ambitions of her own), Adira has imprisoned Jessica and fellow reaper Eddie.

However, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” has become Adira’s motto now. Annabel is trying to unleash an evil as payment for betraying Jessica and using Jessica’s friend Marcel’s soul as payment to Kelly (a devil). With the pressure rising, Adira visits the pair in their prison and does the unthinkable. Adira is willing to give Jessica Death’s Scythe to handle this looming issue.

Meanwhile, Jessica’s human mother Lilah has escaped prison and is being courted by Life, who wants an amulet in Lilah’s possession. Offering the world hasn’t been enough so far, but he is determined to get it.

This issue starts with a flashback to the initial encounter between Death and Lilah. readers witness how Lilah’s past caught up with her and changed her future forever. Fast forward to the present and Life makes another play for Lilah’s amulet. Just when he thinks he’s got it locked up, Lilah turns the tables on him.

At this same moment, Adira pleads her case to Jessica. During the conversation, something happens with the sycthe that no one sees coming!

What happens now? Will Jessica take the deal? Can Lilah continue to deny Life? There is much more to process as the story heads into a new direction that will eave fans guessing at what is about to unfold!

GRIM #12 from Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Credit: Boom! Studios)

GRIM #12 from Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Credit: Boom! Studios)

BREAKDOWN: Phillips devotes a big portion into Lilah’s story. Seeing the initial encounter between her and Death starts putting together pieces to the larger puzzle at hand. The interactions with Life prove there is more going on with her than she is letting known. Since her introduction, she has been a character shrouded in mystery. With this issues structure, readers can start building a strong reaction to her.

Jessica’s current situation is another great swerve to the story at hand. The tension between her and arguably the book’s best character Adira continues to lock readers in. The endgame is very unclear with Adira and that’s nothing but win for fans. Seeing where Jessica ends up by this issue’s conclusion will keep things exciting until the next issue hits. One guarantee with this series is to always expect the unexpected.

Flaviano and Renzi make a big splash with the art for this issue. The moment that Lilah is shot, the perspective from seeing it through her eyes is a unique visual that readers will feel as the story plays out. The biggest image that will “WOW” readers is a moment with Jessica that gives more clarity about the destiny she is running from. It is a full page panel that screams in volumes! The final act is anothe rvisual hit. Where Jessica lands up and who/what she encounters makes a bold statement with an excellent backdrop. With this series, the art is a sure-fire win each time out.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT of 10

The latest installment of Comics’ favorite reaper dives head-first into the power struggle of the afterlife with a can’t miss issue. Phillips’ excellent writing is complemented by the always impressive art of Flaviano to showcase the dangers unfolding not just for Jessica, but her mother as well. There’s a reason why this is comics’ coolest series at the LCS on New Comic Book Day.

BLACK CLOAK by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey has been an incredible journey with its’ murder mystery within the fantasy realm. Each issue has led readers into a web of mistrust and power struggles that have tested two of Kiros’ best in law-enforcement. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros has been found dead in a questionable area of the city. Phaedra Essex and Pax are the two Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) assigned to the case. This hits especially close to home with Phaedra as she was linked to Freyal at one point. With Freyal’s death, tension has mounted to a fever pitch with Kiros’ residents. The public wants answers. Vested parties have interest.

With everyone from the Queen and family to the Kiros Three (last humans left) watching, the pair of Cloaks haven’t had an easy go-around. The search for answers have put Phaedra especially in the line of danger more than once. With some new information into their case, the pair has crashed a party in the Royal Castle. As they make their way through the party, they stumble across secrets neither were expecting.

This issue begins with Essex and Pax discovering the Taka Pens beneath the Castle. Readers find out quickly that Kiros has a very horrible secret that the family has been covering up. The Taka have been used and abused for their magic in energizing the city. The revelation is frightening as what one goes thru is displayed with no punches pulled. Essex and Pax can not believe what they have witnessed. As they plan on exposing this heinous treatments, they are stopped Lysanthir, one of the queens’ most loyal magicians.

What secrets get exposed, readers will brace themselves as the connection between Freyal’s death and the Taka begins to come clearer. With each page, the threads of mystery unwind. There is a great deal of information to take in which should bring closure to many lingering questions.

That said, the final act brings forth a rollercoaster of emotional payoffs and fast paced action. If you have read this series since day 1 (like I have), the ending will pack a serious inner blow as how events play out. If this is your first time diving in, you are either going to be searching your LCS for copies or waiting for the TPB in the fall. This issue packs everyhting you could want. The closing moments bring forth an interesting perspective heading into its’ next phase. it is a perfect closing….for now…..

BREAKDOWN: Thompson has mastered leading readers into the deep layers of this story. Once this finale gets rolling, their patience is paid off with a tremendous issue. Phaedra and Pax have been protagonists that are easy to cheer for. Their reaction to the Takas is very reflective of how the readers will be. Once that revelation hits, the story shifts into high gear.

Like any mystery, the clues behind Freyal’s death come to light. Thompson paints such a tragic picture and hits on many levels. Never at any point was it treated as open and shut. As more information comes to light, readers can see how impactful these actions were. Thompson doesn’t let up as events shift forward into the Taka situation. The pacing gave each plot point ample time to become enamored in. It is never felt as wasted space or forced time. It is a perfect set-up to lead into the closing moments. For where things go from here is anyone’s guess. In the present, fans will have nothing but praise for this concluding issue and story.

McClaren and Carey present some intense visuals for this closing arc chapter. The Taka scene in the beginning spares no time in bringing the horrors directly to the reader. This is capped off with a full-page panel that drops a big exclamation point on the scene. Once the fallout from this begins, the emotions start pouring out of the panels.

The flashback moments prove to be quite eye-catching as the color scheme used makes them pop off the pages. They don’t lose the key elements of the story that they are telling. Each reaction and mannerism adds more to Thompson’s writing. Readers don’t have much time to recover from all these moments as the story picks up its’ pace going into the closing. The art team demonstrate how quickly things are progressing with the actions. Going into the final pages, McClaren and Carey tie in reactions with the characters to say goodbye, leading to a closing full page panel ushering in the next phase of this amazing story.

FINAL POINT: 10 OUT OF 10

The world of Kiros and its’ magical mystery gets exposed in an unforgettable story arc conclusion. Thompson, McClaren and Carey have welcomed readers into an incredible tale filled with fantastic writing and spectacular visuals that builds towards an emotional send-off that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Highest possible recommendation for this series and issue for New Comic Book day.

For this entry, we are checking out a one-shot special spinning out of a fantastic series from Image Comics. Knowing the creative team behind the book, it has been no doubt why this story has been such a hit.

However, For this issue, there’s a gear switch in the art duties, but trust me, the quality doesn’t suffer from a flat tire. NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design adds another element to an ever-captiviating tale. Let’s not delay any longer and see where the journey takes the tale now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** See Previous Review

When the world fell into eternal darkness, survival became an understatement. With artificial light being the only guide, the eighteen wheeler of Valentina “Val” Riggs aka Sundog has become more vital that anyone could imagine.

When an offer of transport shows signs of hope, the journey Val (along with her adopted brother Emory, Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper) started has gone in many directions. With what’s left of the “Sundog Convoy”, the group arrives in Eos, a land of eternal sunshine. However darkness isn’t too far behind.

Blacktop Bill, a dangerous follower of NOX, has tracked them down to Eos. With a gamble to possibly stop Nox, Val and Emory make a run for Argus to attempt victory. A key factor of the plan is Emory making a psychic link and allowing the darkness inside his mind. Desperate times call for desperate measures. With a link in place, the young boy faces a great challenge. The darkness won’t go without a fight as Bill counters the move.

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (Credit Image Comics)

This issue kicks off with Bill driving the Eighteen Wheeler directly at Emory. Being ties to a chair doesn’t help matters. Dodging the truck, Emory senses Bill inside his mind and approaching. Meanwhile, in the physical world, Val is driving as fast as she can with danger looming. This is only the beginning of a hellish nightmare that stays shrouded in cold shadows.

Readers get taken along with Emory in confronting some of his deepest fears while holding Bill back. Will he be strong enough? What will Bill do if he defeats Emory? The stakes have never been higher as the journey showcases what pure evil looks like. Will they make it to Argus in time? There are defining answers as the story progresses. A thrill-ride needs to end at some point and the final panel secures the brakes until the last stop in Nocterra #16.

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (Credit Image Comics)

BREAKDOWN: Snyder takes Emory into the darkest places of his own mind with a chilling tale. The beginning reminded me a touch of the Metallica video for “Enter Sandman”. It is fitting as Blacktop Bill’s ruthlessness on this plane steals the issue. Seeing where Bill takes Emory to confront made an immediate impact. The narration of his dark vision of the world also made Bill a compelling character. Whenever Emory would think he would fight, Bill immediately tortured him back.

Through all this, the writing made Emory into a fitting challenger to Bill. Even at his lowest, Emory kept going forward. This connects with readers as to knowing how important the mission was. The final act brings a serious stop as to what the future appears to bring. All in all, another fantastic read.

Sharp jumping in for art duties gelled perfectly with the story. His style of art mixed with brooding coloring and inks added to the despair of the world of endless night. From the opening with the eighteen wheeler, Sharp set the terror in motion. The use of the headlight coloring made a big statement. The visuals of Emory confronting his past also jumps off the page. It brings an emotional connection front and center for readers. This is followed by an excellent visual combining a painted feel to illustrate Bill’s attack on Emory. There are a few great one page panels that fill the closing act and really end things with a huge climax, taking the story into an unexpected path.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The grim presence of Nox’s most dangerous follower shines through in an incredible one-shot issue. The haunting fantasy battlefield of Emory’s mind comes to life through excellent writing and stunning visuals. The creative team keeps the petal to the metal with an engaging tale that is a must-have on New Comic Book Day.

With her confidence rattled, Erica comes across determined to get back on track. This is overshadowed by moments between Gabi and Riqui. Seeing the pair bond over this ordeal breaks the tension up just enough before shifts back gears. Tynion throws in an excellent new development before tying off events in this return chapter. It’s issues like this readers fully understand why this series gets so much credit and praise.

Dell’edera and Muerto drive home how unglued Cutter has become. Seeing the visuals of the breakdown all leads to a full page panel that fans won’t soon forget. The art team also delivers on the latest Duplicate victim’s emotional state. Watching them relive a nightmare with their testimony to the sheriff set an early feel that never escaped the issue.

It balanced out with Gabi and Riqui’s more “normal” moments as they follow Erica’s lead. The break gives readers a chance to soak in the story before the shocking close-out panels. With the latest development, there is no way to pass on becoming hooked into the latest arc.

It never lets up on the intensity and vested interest in one of the parties as well. When it is all said and done, readers will NOT be ready for this issues conclusion. BREAKDOWN: Madureira unleashes Garrison’s fury onto readers with this chapter. The majority of the issue spotlights his noble stand against the Paladins. Readers can feel his anger as he not only fights his enemies, but wrestles with the ghosts of his past. Garrison’s background has always been the key point of his character.

Madureira takes a deeper dive with a few key emotional scenes in between the action. He interweaves this very well as nothing feels wedged in to break the action panels up. Knowing how personal the fight becomes adds another dynamic to the story. Heading into the final moments, Madureira sneaks in a solid surprise to keep fans on their toes till next time. It’s a fitting mic drop moment to close out this issue.

Lullabi’s art flourishes with each panel. The “quieter” moments with Monika build for a natural progression with her story. Lullabi presents Garrison as stoic in the face of danger. The mannerisms displayed reflect someone who’s ready to go out on their shield (or sword in this case). The action steals readers focus and never stops. The moments feel big and you can sense how every strike matters in the melee. There are some great full page panels in the closing act that can’t be missed. However, there are none greater than the final image to energize fans in the wait till next issue.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Madureira and Lullabi never waste a second in bringing the action in this can’t miss issue. Great writing and phenomenal art depict a swordsman valiantly fighting against the odds and himself. There’s no doubt this series is a must-have for all comic readers. Don’t miss out on picking up this issue!

BREAKDOWN: Starer keeps readers guessing with the secret side of Layla. Readers see how Layla struggles to realize she’s more than human which leads into a blunt opening sequence. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins on a summer night in Bell River, Ontario. Three boys are walking to a quick mart in search of some popsicles. On the walk, the boys come across a swarm of fishflies covering the building and surrounding ground. Readers find out that Fishflies show up for roughly a week then die off.

The boys seem determined to cross the flies to get some popsicles. One boy is prompted by a dare to cross the flies for $20. Shoeless, he starts a journey that becomes soon regrettable.

Meanwhile, a man wakes up in a field. Bleeding and holding a gun, he runs towards a nearby barn. The Fishflies start attaching themselves to him. Lemire is doing double duty (writing and art) for this issue. He lays the groundwork for a captivating mystery blending in many elements for a distinct feel. From the opening salvo, the tone is set with a shocking action. Readers can’t help but react to the robber’s actions with shock and sadness.

Once Franny enters the story, she offers a big counter-balance to the dark overtones of the story. Readers see her being someone who’s goodwill radiates off the pages. The story moves between flashbacks and gradually builds on the deterioration of the robber’s health. The mystique of the flies factors in with the shocking ending of this issue. Just when readers think they know what’s going on, Lemire shifts gears. The storytelling sends fans into a direction they won’t want to steer away from.

As for the art, Lemire makes a big splash with the two-page visual of the flies covering the mart. The image sinks in with readers as an odd occurrence with trouble looming. The visuals of the robber waking up in the filed is another case of excellent storytelling. The use of colors make big statements when added into the simple black/white color scheme.

Whether it’s the red of the blood or the yellow overtone of certain pages, illuminating the scenes, this additive make a big impression to the story. There is a huge two-page spread that mixes this together, sending the story into the final act. Lemire caps things off with an interesting few panels, giving the fans much to process moving forward.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Fishflies #1 keeps readers on edge with strong writing and eye-catching visuals. Lemire combines natural horror themes with a touch of fantasy to present a story that stands on its’ own at the Local Comic Shop. Keep an eye out for this book on New Comic Book Day.

PHANTOM ROAD #5 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, one of the most underrated comics on the shelves continues its trek on the horror highway. Phantom Road #5 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands from Image Comics dives deeper into the journey into the supernatural of Dom and Birdie. With more twists and turns forming, there’s no shortage of delivering excitement on each mile. Let’s take a closer look at what’s unfolding within these pages now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

“What a long, strange trip its’ been”… It is the easiest way to describe the life of Dom and Birdie currently. When Dom assists Birdie during an accident, they become bonded with a mysterious object. Transporting to another dimension and fighting faceless creatures is now part of the daily routine. That is until one creature turns into a human! Now on the run for a potential murder and looking for answers, the unlikely pair have to find a way to work together long enough to find a way out of this situation.

Now thrown into the mix is FBI agent Theresa Weaver who is trying to put together a case, but winds up in a conspiracy of her own. Last readers saw her, she was kidnapped and interrogated by a masked figure concerning “Project Jackknife”. When the figure leaves, Weaver starts leaving an abandoned warehouse trying to put her own mystery together.

This issue kicks off with Weaver looking at a file dating back to at least 1991. The news paper clipping inside detail about a serial killer on the highway. When Weaver leaves the building, she checks her phone. Agent Pike left messages for her but when she calls back, the number is out of service. Director Wallis gets a hold of her and claims Pike was removed from the case. Readers quickly find out Wallis isn’t on the up and up with Weaver with a familiar figure in his office.

Meanwhile, Dom and Birdie have an immediate danger in their path! Will the pair make it out of this one? What about Agent Weaver? Readers see when the pace slows down after the danger, more mysteries are revealed with a huge reveal going into the closing moments. There’s going to be even more questions about the figure seen at the last moments. Without question, there is definitely more tread on the tires with this tale to be told.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire adds more intrigue to the story before ending chapter one. Weaver’s story plays out as conspiracy cover-up with the actions of Director Wallis. With Weaver closing in, Lemire mixes in hints of a bigger threat looming with a cameo that will shock some readers. Dom and Birdie’s portion of the book dives into the horror aspect with Birdie’s impatience leading into danger for all. Pacing gave equal time to all as things look to be slowly tyin together. Solid surprise reveal near the end of the book.

Walta and Bellaire play off the conspiracy angle for Weaver’s story panels. The dark coloring of the warehouse reflects the conspiracy and the confusion spun by Director Wallis. The attack on Dom and Birdie connects to readers for how terrifying the moment is. The panels are brutal and the pair’s reactions paint the picture of terror that’s been lingering since issue one. Capturing the facial shocks and anger between the pair also added to the drama. The huge reveal jumps out and gets its’ proper due via a full page panel. The art team keeps things rolling along with very consistent work with the ever-evolving story.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

Lemire, Walta and the team keep things rolling along with another excellent read. The secrets grow deeper with fantastic writing and art shifts things into high-gear with a big reveal in the final moments. Keep an eye out for this book on New Comic Book Day!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue begins with an ominous voice mentioning seven people who seem intertwined together by fate. Readers meet Issac, his mother Amamda, Justin, Felix, Tanya, Bob and Gary. All have a different story to tell. With a haunting narration, the story focuses on Issac, a young boy staring into a horrifying image. With bodies hanging from a tree bathed in a red sky, Issac stands frozen looking into a faceless stranger.

Before he can say anything, Issac is snapped back to reality. The sky changes back to a normal color. The tree he stared at has no bodies around it. The faceless stranger has turned into Justin, who’s trying to enjoy his cigarette in peace. Their common bond is revealed to be a Tenement. But as readers soon find out, this place has more than one sees on the outside.

The story shifts thru various interactions of the tenants of the building. Each one has an issue they deal with. Each relationship varies from pleasant to confrontational with all signs leading back to Issac. After the young boy has a conversation with another resident, what seems like a meaningless talk looks to bring something sinister in its wake. As Issac stares out into the sky, a book is nearby that is all too familiar readers of the Bone Orchard.

What could be transpiring in this building? Things begin to ramp up in the late hours of the night with a few restless neighbors. In an instant, an event happens that proves to be the match to the emotional timebomb ready to explode. The repercussions of this are felt with each tenant but one now appears to be heading towards a dark path with the closing image feeding readers worst suspicions. Get ready for something wicked on the horizon.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire gives readers a wide range of characters bound together with a sinister mystery looming. Each tenant of the building has their own tales but Issac quietly became the lead of this story. Lemire writes him as a normal child troubled by disturbing visions. His interactions with the other residents seems normal at first but one seems to know what Issac is truly capable of and ushers him in that path of destiny. Even with Issac getting a good majority of panel time, pacing allowed fair time for readers to meet the group involved with this series. The other neighbors each have problems they’re dealing with but none seem to know what is next. The book’s tone is troubling and grounded. The character’s own dramas might be blinding them but their roads seem to cross together with the event of the final act. Where things lead now is unknown but rest assured, there is much to be invested with this series.

Sorrentino and Stewart capture the grittiness of daily life with a supernatural shadow on the horizon. The initial introduction brings readers in with giving each major character a three panel mini story to clarify a piece of their daily activities. This method varies later int he book but smaller panel usage give a more personal feel to each sub-plot. When the first supernatural visual hits, it’s a direct, blunt two page spread filled with the brooding sky and mysterious figure Issac is looking at. The intensity of this is mimicked later in the book as the late night hours portion builds readers’ anxiousness up to a big payoff. The full-page lightbulb panel kicks off the final act with some emotional outbursts leading to a calmer stage sending this book into its’ next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The Bone Orchard universe crashes back into comic shops with a defiant new story that readers won’t be able to escape. Lemire and Sorrentino orchestrate a brooding tale with superb writing and haunting art, reflecting the danger slowly revealing itself to readers with every page.
