Revenge has turned into a game of who is playing who. Is it the extraordinary teenager with the legendary parents? Is it the vengeful billionaire with a score to settle?

Readers have taken notes as the tension mounts. All roads are now leading to the final showdown. The only question is who will win in this battle of revenge.

The chapter opens up with a young man telling a story. the picture being painted is of a man lost in his own hype. The figure being described is all about image than substance. Zero Preston is the subject. Readers find out who is testifying about this: His son Solomon.

Emma and her team of Lawrence, Skottie, Gleason, and the Paragon welcome Solomon onto their team. Taking down a powerful man like Preston will be no easy feat. Solomon gives a big clue on where to strike at his father. The information gives a big insight into the man who’s ruined Emma’s life.

However, the moment is quickly dashed by The Paragon. He senses that someone has crashed their meeting. The Muscle of the team ushers them away to confront their guest. It is a personal reunion for the Paragon. As readers witnessed last issue, Preston hired the Paragon’s ex-wife to handle his problem.

The mood swiftly changes as Preston sets forth his most dangerous attack yet. Emma’s team needs to scramble quickly. The book speeds towards its’ final set-up with a detour that will have fans’ attention. A new development has been added into the mix. This will either be the deciding factor of victory or the nail in the coffin of Emma’s revenger plan. Fans will have much to look forward to in the finale.

Bendis throws in a few new dynamics before setting the final stage. The addition of Solomon provides a personal element into Emma’s plan. Conversations reflect the unity to take down Preston. It also shows the conflicting personas involved.

The Paragon has been the ultimate wild-card in this story. Seeing his past catch up with him made for a few stand-out moments. This all leads into a strong final act. Seeing the pieces fall into place provides a strong foundation for where the closing leaves readers. Pacing allows a slow, methodical build into the parting image which is a great spot to leave before the finale commences.

Maleev, Herring and Meng welcome fans into Emma’s team meeting with a two page full splash. It’s has a sense of a “welcome new readers” to it but works to showcase the full team. The Paragon displays a few emotions throughout this issue. Seeing the reactions to his ex-wife now enemy raised the tension a few levels.

Emma also has a few panels that break up the seriousness of the situation. Her time conversing with Lawrence comes across as a possible goodbye knowing what is coming. This leads into the closing moments where the panel usage comes into play. Emma’s image repeating itself walks the readers through what she’s envisioning with the plan. This all caps off with the final page. A full page that leaves no doubt where everyone stands heading into the conclusion. It’s high level work that is well known with this series.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

Engaging, Clever and Bold. “Masterpiece” can easily be described with those words. With this latest chapter, Bendis, Maleev and the team combine sharp writing with classic imagery to stage all the players into position before charging into the finale. The series is nothing short of its’ title billing every time out.

Let’s break down what’s going on in the latest.

SHE’S RUNNING ON FUMES #4 by Dennis Hopeless, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Heather Antos (Comixology originals)

Hopeless never shies away from showing the strength of Jeanie throughout this entire story. Even when things look dire, the writing shows how she’s pushing through. The grocery store scene is a prime example of the wear on Jeanie’s soul. It makes a loud statement to readers. As things fall apart, Jeanie must release her rage.

Jody continues to be a wild card within the pages. His actions are frantic and unpredictable. Even as the “business” gets brought to home, his demeanor sways often. This leads to an awkward closing. The final page screams what all readers are thinking: How much does Jeanie have left?

The art spotlights Jeanie’s frustration. From the two page splash concerning “plumbing”, a sense of emotional fatigue lingers. this carries into said Grocery store moment. The team unleash Jeanie’s anger with no restrictions. Her outburst is one readers can relate to with her situation.

The closing arc captures the moodiness of Jody. In each panel, there is a sense of uneasiness. This escalates into his brash action. Imagery of what he’s doing makes it very difficult to root for him in any circumstance. This only solidifies what we already know: Even on fumes, Jeanie is finding a way to outlast everyone.

FINAL POINT: 8

Even with fading hope, the weight of Jody’s world doesn’t break Jeanie in the latest chapter of SROF. Hopeless constructs a tumultuous landscape with Jody’s behavior. Jenkins locks in the visuals of a devious world with a broken but not defeated protagonist still standing.

Under the banner, fans have been treated to such hits as Hailstone, Funny Creek and the incredible Red Tag.

The brand looks to make another huge run in 2024. First out of the gate is a mysterious world of fantasy and intrigue.

The story begins in a frozen landscape. Inside a mountain hides a secret colony. The inhabitants are rationing water. Soldiers of the Tyr house are clashing with the Dagur representatives over the amount of water being given. Tensions run very high as both sides don’t back down.

Fighting ensues. The young residents watch in awe. Some don’t agree with the method of “conversation”. Once Loder throws his apple at one of the Tyr, emotions run even higher. It is only interrupted when the Mistress of the King grabs the kids for a history lesson.

Readers watch as the story of Erik the last Explorer. the story breaks down the Mistland and some of its’ secrets. From here, the story picks its pace up as time moves forward. Just when the story looks to head in one direction, the closing image throws everything off. Brace for a mystery that looks to uncover more than just a suspect.

Castilho juggles with many characters in this opening charge. The inhabitants of the Mistland range in many different emotions. Fighting for control establishes the power struggle. As the different groups begin to emerge, readers have to start cyphering where the motivations come from. This mirrors the themes one would see in a “Game Of Thrones” esque story. This is a big win for readers as the true intentions remain hidden for now. Judging by the final page, there will be much to dive into this new world more than the shocking conclusion.

Watanabe, Marques and Manes combine many elements to craft the world of the Mistland. With the rivaling parties, their conflicts sets the tone for the book. The story of Erik The Last explorer gets a full page guide walking the readers through his journey. The final trek of the chapter depicts the many residents of the land in more peaceful times. It is a stark contrast to the final image, which will have fans guessing until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

Through the wonderment of a fantasy land lies a dark secret. Castilho’s writing walks readers into the tensions of the new landscape. The imagery of Watanabe and Marques depicts elements brewing that hits a new gear when the last page debuts. This will be a book you’ll want to keep an eye out for on NCBD.

The story begins with the immediate fallout of Jo losing his arm to the Shroud. The mood is reflective at how dangerous Jo walked towards being killed. Witht he shroud leaving a facial scar, Jo’s friends see him in the hospital. One friend who comes bearing gifts is Charlie.

Charlie bears the guilt of causing Jo’s injury. A metal arm lies beneath the wrapping paper. Jo is happily surprised to see it. Charlie hopes this can lead to some forgiveness. It leads to an impromptu kiss which Jo isn’t ready for. Charlie leaves before he can react.

The story shifts back to the cold reality of the new world. Jo and friends are locked away in a crystal jail. Rowan has set them up for his own devious plan.

What does Rowan have in mind with Jo and company? Readers find out there is much more that just Jo’s journey at hand. A showdown is set in motion that could change the course of everything.

The pace fires on all cylinders as the action unfolds. During the chaos, who will be left standing? With the closing pages, a new course is set for when readers head back into the abyss of the Shroud.

What a mic dropping ending. Scott and Jack Snyder drive the emotional points right through to the conclusion. Jo’s backstory connects with readers about the uncertainty of the new world. It’s a perfect set-up for their present struggle. The reveal of Rowan opens up many possibilities to where things can head next. The direction that the story leans into is an excellent build for the feverish last act.

With the climactic ending, there are many moving elements at hand. The writing manages to close in on Jo, who steals the spotlight with his actions. The fallout presents an intriguing new course of action. Once the final page hits, readers will want to dive right back as the next course will set things in a new avenue to follow along with. Amazing work on display with the finale.

Favoccia and Cogar give readers many huge images to rave about. The emotional innocence of youth is shown in the opening segments. It gives a happier timeframe before the darker times of the present. Rowan’s reveal is crafted with a full page split of panels featuring the major player involved.

This is complimented with a full page displaying the showdown of Rowan and Charon. There’s no way readers see this and not get excited for what follows. From here, the action doesn’t stop as events keep escalating to a grand finale. The fallout leaves readers for now with an image that leaves no doubt the saga is far from over.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

With Rowan’s plans revealed, Jo and his friends have to find a way to survive in a thrilling arc conclusion. The fantastic writing of Scott and Jack Snyder takes readers on a rollercoaster of events. Favoccia layers the chapter with superb imagery that elevates the saga to new levels. By A Thread is a series that readers simply can’t afford to miss.

After confronting Preston at his mansion, the favor is returned to Emma and her team. Andrew Garrison the IV leads a group to track down Emma’s presumed location. Once they get inside, the group find no one. All that’s waiting for them is a laptop with a note to “play”.

Emma leaves a video recording. In the message she informs Garrison she has all his hidden information. Readers see the moves set in motion. Emma advises Garrison to quit his chase. If not, how will Preston react knowing he never completed his job?

The answer to that question is interrupted by The Paragon! The imposing figure demonstrates his style of action. He beats the group to a bloody pulp! Once that business is finished, it’s onward to the next phase.

What does Emma have in store now? How will Preston respond to the failure of Garrison? Readers sit ringside as both parties take their plans up a few levels. The final act tips off a few clues as to where the mystery heads now. None will be more impactful than who enters the game on the final page. Just when you think you have all the answers, more questions are thrown into the mix.

Bendis paces the back and forth moments to give readers a closer look into both parties schemes. Emma has emerged as the true heir to her family’s reputation. The dynamic between her set-up for Garrison is through and leads off perfectly for the Paragon to appear. Post the encounter, the story shifts back towards Preston.

The writing reflects his brash defiance that Emma is challenging him. Even with the results of the Paragon’s involvement, Preston looks shaken but refusing to accept his loss. This plays well for the closing act and the drastic measures he takes. Each side gets ample time to shine and this only builds more excitement for what is unfolding within this tale.

Maleev, Herring and Meng give the Paragon a huge entrance into this chapter. Switching from dark Blue to tinted Yellow connects with the change of demeanor and attack. The use of Red also makes the images pop, which is another cool technique.

The page panel used for Preston’s reaction is a complex one that readers will enjoy. The facial reactions vary to Preston finally comprehending what is going on. The grainy footage from the tablet also stands out to amplify his emotions. This builds towards a nice parting shot to throw another twist into a can’t miss story.

FINAL POINT: 9

With revenge fueling the dangerous game of cat and mouse, the showdown between Lawford and Preston takes things up a few notches. Through flawless writing and exceptional imagery, each party make bold moves to ensure victory. Will it be enough in the end?

It is no surprise when the creative team behind it is an Eisner winning pair (AFTERLIFT) that is known for the imaginative storytelling.

Readers have followed along as the vampire crew behind an all-night diner have challenged villains, mythology, and the high cost of immortality. Heading into their final chapter, the family risks it all for one of their own. Who will survive the final showdown with the Takers?

Alex, the vampire/“super-hero” who began this journey in issue #1, has been taken away by the Takers. The remaining members of the family track down his whereabouts to the Bermuda Triangle. With Francis (Frankenstein) and GOD by their side, the group ventures to free their family member.

Upon arrival, they are confronted by The Boogeyman. Behind the scenes lurking is Lucifer. He is waiting to have a chat with God about current affairs. Once the family conquers their fears, its full speed ahead into a confrontation with the Boogeyman and his forces.

This issue begins with God and Lucifer discussing the forthcoming battle between them. God has cyphered Lucifer is building his forces via the Supernatural. God challenges him on the plans. God also questions whether they’re on the right path as well.

Meanwhile, the action kicks off with the family (in full superhero costumes) taking it to the Boogeyman. With a lack of fear, the evil forces begin to fade. During this moment, Cynthia and Joy break away to find Alex and Francis, who are still captured.

The captured pair have found a friend in the form of the Yeti. Unfortunately for the trio, their path to escape has come upon a road block. Lazaruk and his “Justice Angels” stand in their way.

Readers watch the magic unfold as the final stand plays out. The tension never slows down building to a fever pitch with time slipping away. An unlikely voice becomes the catalyst for the strongest part of the final act. The emotions run high with one paying an ultimate price. The epilogue provides a superb ending to what has been a phenomenal read since day one. There is much to enjoy with this final chapter.

Zdarsky combines multiple theme for this finale. Questioning fate is one of the bigger elements of the story. The conversation of God, Lucifer and their destiny raise many questions about the paths they’ve chosen. This ties in perfectly with the family’s original challenges. Defying the Takers, the writing has mirrored the defiance of what is considered to be certain fate. It leads to great character moments for Ian, Andrea and Cynthia.

It’s closing pages complete the journey of self-discovery with a quiet moment between two characters. Zdarsky closes out the story with a strong ending fitting of the characters that have stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Loo and Alleyne shift focus to the conversations with the imagery of this book. The use of the white background for God and Lucifer’s talk gave the moment a completely different feel than the other stories going on. It’s a contrast to Alex and Francis being stick in their darkness surroundings. Where the talk bring hope, Alex’s situation has been shrouded with darkness. Readers can connect with the hopelessness of the capture.

Once all the stories start coming together in the latter half, the mood is leveled up with the coloring and lettering. The final stand for one character reflects the noble sacrifice being made. It is also complemented with strong emotional reactions amongst the family. The pain and sorrow in certain characters faces speak volumes. With a parting full page visual to the world of the diner, the story concludes with an enjoyable image. There is no other way the series could part way with readers with other than this shot. The team delivered on some incredible storytelling.

The supernatural saga of comic’s favorite diner concludes with a strong finale. Zdarsky orchestrates a layered conclusion with superb writing. Loo, Alleyne, and Cvetkovic provide a bittersweet farewell with dramatic visuals. It’s closing time for this wildly imaginative tale and a true disservice to your collection not to add this chapter.

The parents of Emma “Masterpiece Lawford” are legends. Legends in the criminal world. Zero Preston has an axe to grind against them for stealing a very large amount of money from his possession. His plan of revenge has put their young teenage daughter in the line of fire.

Emma has been asked to target Katie Goods, a billionaire with a questionable history. Emma’s parents ad a crew for their cases. Now, Emma has one with Gleason, Lawrence and The Paragon. Will the legacy live on through “Masterpiece” and her team?

This chapter begins with Emma visiting Skottie in Juvenile Jail. The recruitment process begins. The conversation comes off as awkward as one might think. How to sell a life-altering heist to teenagers. Surprisingly, Skottie accept. Ema has now added “The Brains” to her operation.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team is back at their location getting accustomed to each other. Emma brings Skottie into the fold but Skottie’s not the only new face to enter the room. Katie Roots arrives head on for a conversation.

Readers follow along with the narrative Roots paints for Emma and company. Is it a ruse or is it the Truth? The fallout leads Emma take a dangerous risk. Is she prepared for what “reward” she finds? If the last act is any indication, Emma’s journey into mystery looks to have found a new path.

Bendis gives readers much to enjoy with this chapter. Emma’s recruiting process comes across relatable as the conversation with Skottie plays out. This is also matched by the Paragon and Lawrence. The age difference provides a touch of comic relief in the mix of the drama.

Root’s entry into the story throws a few wrinkles into Emma’s plans. The issue really finds its’ steam following that encounter. Seeing Emma process the elements involved gives readers an insight to why she commands the attention of the key players. The writing features her picking up on the clues. What she is going to do with this information is enough to have readers locked in for the ride.

Maleev, Herring and Reed focus on the reactions of characters more so in this chapter than previous ones. The range from uncertainty to anxiousness elevated the drama at hand.

The use of coloring during Emma’s deciphering steals this issue. It makes the panels pop while putting the information in motion. This is paired perfectly with Emma’s close-ups. Seeing the mind starting to put the puzzle pieces together leads to a solid ending to another outstanding chapter.

Bendis and Maleev take readers through twists and turns before putting Emma’s latest discoveries into focus with this chapter. Sharp writing and detailed imagery set the stage for a sudden change in direction that fans won’t want to miss.

After waking up to a dead body after a night out, Alex Greer’s life has been put through Hell. Greer claims innocence. Under investigation, Greer has been put into a mental hospital. Under the watch of Doctor Kincaid, Greer has been trying to process what is happening. The images flooding her mind elude to more happening here. After long times under the watch, Greer has broken away from Kincaid but the question is for how long.

The chapter opens with her recapping the actions of Kincaid to another doctor. Kincaid is handcuffed to a gurney. The doctor questions her claims and breaks down reasons for her actions. He leaves her with the idea that everything is going to be ok. Greer isn’t buying that and escapes from her restraints. Once she leaves her room, the truth is finally revealed.

Readers watch along as Greer discovers others in captivity. As the lead scientist catches up with Greer, the true horror shines through. The true identity of Kincaid’s plans paint a darker picture than Alex had ever dreamed of. What has Alex become a part of? Is there any way out? Not if Kincaid has any say.

The results are shocking as Alex is thrusted into making a dangerous choice. The closing act leaves no doubt of what consequences come from Greer’s actions. Does she find her way out of Kincaid’s grasp? The closing page answers all with a shocking end that will leave readers floored as to the story’s conclusion.

Phillips pens a haunting finale as Alex’s story comes to a screeching halt. The conversation with the first doctor is a play to the readers, recapping her tale. It gives clarity to previous events without a full recap section. Once she escapes her holding room, the drama and horror elevates.

The history behind what Greer has been kidnapped into is intense. Readers can only feel for Greer as her involvement can only lead to danger. The stand-off with Kincaid invokes many reactions. The emotional and psychological attacks have been building towards this moment. Phillips sets this up perfectly to when Greer finally reacts, the moment is extremely impactful. The parting act brings the story to a proper end and leaves a frightening impression on its’ way.

Boyle continues to bring in the visions of torture through Alex’s eyes. The opening flashback is brief but speaks volumes over the past four issues. This leads into the shocking history of Kincaid’s master plans.

Boyle ushers in the final act with some very mind-bending images. These pages get taken to a whole other level through Napolitano’s work. The mix of torturing voices and world-splitting visuals makes Alex’s breakdown even more impactful. The lasting shot is simpler but leaves readers with images sealing any doubts of Alex’s fate.

Ian, Cynthia, Joy, Andrea, Frank and GOD himself have embarked on a mission to rescue Alex from the Takers. Alex is a member of the All-Nighter family who became lost in the fight with Lazaruk. With Frank sacrificing himself to get the location of the Takers, the group has followed his tracker to the Bermuda Triangle.

Once they arrive, they confront the BOGEYMAN. Their rescue mission is derailed when the entity used his powers to make each member confront their fears.

This issue kicks off with God meeting with the Bogeyman on an astral level. Thinking he has the upper hand, the evil soul tries claiming he is the only God now.

The story shifts gears to Joy at her mother’s grave. Joy’s sister is blaming her for the death. Cynthia is on the streets, begging and disheveled. Andrea is running form her fellow officers. Ian is isolated and alone in a desert area.

Meanwhile Frank has been put into a prison limbo all his own. Coming across the Yeti, Frank starts figuring out the Takers plans. Will this lead to finding Alex?

The family continues a grueling onslaught of their worst nightmares. What follows next is a true test of how this family have come together over time. The strength shown is the same that allows them to take the risks they do. Readers sit back and see how the endgame is set. The final image letting everyone know the end is near.

Zdarsky puts the family into the most uncomfortable scenarios in this issue. Knowing Joy’s family issues, readers can easily sense her pain as she feels the burden she’s accused of. Cynthia having a fall from grace reflects how her character has been more flawed than previously thought. The other members have their time as well, but all share the same themes.

The panels with Frank lead readers into a great sub-plot with the end drawing closer. Throughout this series, the writing has been about solving the riddle of their strengths. This issue caps it off with a resounding answer before the last call is made.

Loo gives ample time to focus on the doubt and anxiousness of each member. The facial reactions speak loudly as the torment is taking place. The fallout resonates with fans as the high emotions shine in each panel. The panels with God and the Bogeyman pop off the page with the excellent coloring by Alleyne. The closing image is perfect as it bookends the original series themes. Loo presents an excellent full page panel bringing everything together before tearing it apart in the next chapter.

The chapter begins at an earlier time of Jo and “The Shroud”. Readers watch the youthful actions of a game of “Spin The Bottle”. In a post-apocalyptic world, it’s a fleeting moment of normalcy. Jo spins and it lands on Charlie, who isn’t there.

Jo finds her contemplating her future as she’s got a chance to join the Mechanic’s guild. Jo offers words of encouragement. When Charlie slips, she falls towards a catching Jo. In between laughing about the slip, a startling revelation appears. Jo’s arm lands in some of the Shroud. With it quickly moving up Jo’s arm, Charlie makes a choice to save Jo. The cost is high as she takes an axe to his arm.

In the present time, the older group of friends have followed Rowan on this journey. Rowan is the stranger who showed up with the black diamond. With bright hope behind his selling point, the group camps out twenty miles from their location at a drive-in theatre.

With the break int he action, the conversation goes back to their pre-shroud days. Happiness is short lived as something crashes the party and its’ not happy.

Readers see the party-crasher with action unfolding. The pace picks up as the group fights to survive. he fallout sends the story into uncharted areas as a few revelations appear. The closing moments enter a new dynamic into Jo and his friends’ quest that leaves many questions for next time.

The writing keeps the focus centered on the longing of the pre-shroud days with this latest edition. The moments of “Spin The Bottle” reflect how trying to retain being normal isn’t in the cards. Jumping to present time, the group’s conversation keeps their time light-hearted until the threat shows up.

At this stage, the pace shifts gears to the threat at hand. The action picks up the issue but leads to a strong closing act. The writing spaced out Rowan’s secrets enough to give the finale a bigger feel before concluding events.

Favoccia does another fantastic job with bringing this fantasy world to life. The innocence of the kids right after the Shroud wins over readers. This pays into the striking panel of Jo losing his arm to survive. The threat at hand has very intense visuals stemming from it’ near full page panel debut.

The fallout mirrors the reaction of Rowan’s reveals. Readers instantly can sense the change of the group’s feelings. This plays into a great closing page which makes a big impact on the way out of this latest chapter.

MASTERPIECE #2 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Ian Herring and Josh Reed picks up where a billionaire’s vendetta has drawn the attention of a shocking figure. Let’s take a closer look at where things line up now.

Emma aka “Masterpiece Lawford” was a normal teenager trying to survive high school. The daily student life took a back seat to the actions of Zero Preston. Preston has an axe to grind against Emma’s parents who stole a hefty sum from him. Unknown to Emma herself, her parents were legendary criminals. Legendary is the only way to describe their legacy of heists.

Emma is now being used by Preston as a pawn in another plan of revenge. However, she might have help in surviving this ordeal with a mysterious stranger crossing her path.

The issue begins with a “retelling” of Emma’s parents story. The version comes from a movie created by Zero Preston. Emma and her friend Lawrence watch the film. Emma has difficulty processing what she’s seen. This is even more complicated with the stranger who saved them last issue.

The young kids were saved by THE PARAGON. Readers find out his connection to Emma’s parents which is more complex than meets the eye. How does this tie into Preston’s plans? And who is “Katie Roots”? An idea spawns direction but not without opposition. The closing images suggest Emma’s world is about to get much bigger, whether she likes it or not.

Bendis takes readers on quite the ride within these pages. The introduction of Emma’s Parents works to develop the ideas of how they truly were to the reader. Emma’s contradiction only helps make that theme clear. Seeing her as one who’s quickly trying to figure a mystery out incorporates fear and anxiousness into her character flawlessly.

The Paragon makes an excellent dynamic into the story. Seeing his story play out through Gleason’s eyes elevates the looming reputation he exudes. The moments with Lawrence and The Paragon provide a splash of comic relief into the seriousness of Emma’s search for answers. The closing moments usher in an altered stat quo but not without leaving more questions in its’ wake.

Maleev and Herring develop an aura of intrigue on each page. The opening “movie” sequence has a vintage feel until the closing moments reveal its’ true form. The Paragon’s origin is also presented in a 70’s-esque format. It works on connecting the audience to the imposing legacy he carries.

Another exceptional image is Emma’s breakdown of a “team”. The art positions the cast into a set-up that made me think “Mission: impossible” at first read. Combine this with the anguish and uneasiness of actions and readers will leave knowing that they are in for something extraordinary.

Who is Emma Lawford? That question haunts the pages of comics’ next big thing. Bendis orchestrates the ultimate heist of readership with brilliant writing. Paired with Maleev’s electric art and its’ another winning combination fans can’t afford to miss.

Marshall Holt is on the verge of retirement. He’s recruited to investigate a murder in 1891. The case leads him to the town of Canary. Holt knows this town all too well. It is the location of his most disturbing case: Hyrum Tell.

While searching the case, Holt is joined by Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), & Mabel Warren, daughter of Canary founder Chester Warren. The trio’s journey leads them from an abandoned cave to “The Global Geological & Divination Society 1081” or House 1081. The “Canary Evolution” theory looms heavy as they can’t escape the danger. All the while, Holt is trying to hold it together with the memories of his past begin to creep into the present.

After a monstrous figure reveals itself from the grave surroundings below, Holt leads the charge to head to the bottom of the cave and address whatever evil lies there once and for all.

The issue begins with Holt returning to his family’s home. The mood is dark and looming with an evil hiss. As Holt walks in the house, he finds his wife and baby dead as canary eggs lie on the floor.

Suddenly, Holt is back with Mabel as they prepare to descend to the bottom of the cave. Knowing time is not on their side, the pair lowers the elevator. Once they begin to head downward, Mabel notices that things are not normal.

The road to Hell is paved with dark intentions as Holt and Mabel finally land at the deep bottom. Once they walk out of the elevator, readers see the insanity they set into. Answers are revealed and more burden is put on Holt’s soul as he now finds himself in a place he never expected.

The closing act floods the pages with excitement and rising uncertainty. Can Holt save the day one last time? Readers will walk away with a few parting images before a surprising one to conclude this epic tale with.

Snyder sends Holt off into the sunset with an unforgettable issue. The challenges he has faced have not been an ordinary case. Tull’s impact on his life never strays too far from this story. Holt battles the ghosts of his past to find a possible future. Snyder focuses in on this element during the key points of this finale.

Once the big revelation appears, Snyder presents our lead with the challenge of being vigilant for the greater good, no matter the cost. The conflict is one that will not easily escape reader’s minds as they read the tale. It pushes Holt to his breaking point. Knowing what lies ahead, his actions re-assure any doubt of his nobility in the face of overwhelming odds.

The final moments move briskly to end this saga on a very strong note. The parting images will have readers talking as the “Canary Evolution” theory leaves a lasting impression for an immediate re-read for years to come.

Panosian delivers on looming horror and crushing drama art to conclude the last ride. The heart-wrenching images of Holt struggling to deal with his family’s state instantly sets a devious overtone to the story. Once the decent inside the cave begins, readers brace for the impact of Holt’s valiant efforts.

The cave is filled with brooding images of terror and anxiety. There are a run of two-page spreads that scream volumes of the breaking of Holt’s spirit right before the evil’s reveal. Panosian welcomes that element to the main story with a devilish hello via its’ body language. Showing Holt’s reaction to all of this further cements the cost he must decide to pay to end things. The conflict concludes with another fantastic double page action shot before bringing the curtain down. The mastery of horror and western styles is truly remarkable with the artistry.

With Alex being taken away by the Takers during their battle with Lazaruk, the remaining members of The All-Nighter Cafe embark on a quest to get him back. Ian, Cynthia, and Joy are joined by Andrea (their recently turned human to vampire ally) and an individual claiming to be GOD.

Finding their location would be a challenge. Francis (aka Frankenstein’s Monster) sacrificed himself to be bait. Once the opportunity was there, time has now become a factor to succeed or die trying in the process.

This issue begins with Cynthia scolding Igor and the rest of the family. Knowing her personal relationship with Francis, she is not taking his actions well. The sacrifice was not in vein. The tracker Francis had on him starts showing the Taker’s possible location. Readers find out that it is the legendary Bermuda Triangle.

Meanwhile Francis is being held captive by two mysterious figures. The one leads the conversation into questioning Francis’ actions. Once he is not answering with truth, the figure hits Francis with force, claiming to be waiting or the others to come.

At sea, what does the family come across? Readers see what is lurking in the Triangle and it is not happy to see the visitors. From here, the triangle conflict leads into new revelations and challenges. Is this what will finally stop Ian and company? Once the final act begins to play out, readers know the final endgame has started with a bleak outlook.

Zdarsky sets forth the final voyage for the diner crew with a strong tale of challenging fears. The emotions range from anger to worry amongst the crew after Francis’ choice. The creativity pours out from this issue as well. With the issue’s antagonist, Zdarsky challenges each character to face their darkest fears.

Taking the conflict to such a level keeps readers a new perspective heading into the closing issues. The final moments kick events into high gear coming to a screeching halt on the last panel. The story has been an excellent read thus far and shows no signs of letting up now.

Loo and Alleyne focus on the emotional reactions of what is happening for this chapter. From Cynthia’s rage to God’s “even keel” calmness, the variations of reactions provides the readers an insight into the conflict. The secret of the Triangle is given half page panels which amplifies its moment. Its’ resolution is another great half page panel that closes solidly.

The major antagonist makes a grand entrance to the group late in the issue. The panels add a haunting element to his attack. The smaller panels (like the 9 panel page) connects the dark overtones of what is happening as the initial strike is made. The closing image caps off the beginning of the end on a high note. It’s another example of great storytelling that this series is known for.

A teacher introduces Emma to fellow students in her new classroom. The moment is awkward as Emma’s speech doesn’t exactly connect. Making things even worse is the FBI crashing the welcome party. They’re looking for a “Masterpiece Lawford”. Emma is very confused as to what is happening. Emma is led away into a car with her next stop an unknown location.

After having her mask removed, Emma is in the presence of Zero Preston. Preston is a billionaire who surprises not only Emma but readers with his knowledge. Preston knows Emma is not her real name. Preston also explains how her parents stole money from him and disappeared without a trace. The grudge has grown over time leading to this moment.

Readers witness the master plan Preston has for Emma. It is a risky gamble, but with all the anger fueling him, Preston is locked in. Emma starts to try figuring out what is happening as she now faces a real problem. The fallout from this leads into a new direction.

The closing moments add danger and anxiety to the young 16 year old’s path of discovery. Rest assured by the final page, Emma’s world as she knew it becomes forever changed. Get ready for a story that fits its’ title billing.

Bendis crafts a new vision in what we define “criminal” as. Emma is presented as an outsider to a world she knew nothing about. The dialogue with Preston is filled with themes of intrigue and wonder. His drive of “villainy” is an easy play for readers to see. The story behind her parents is a great surprise.

The latter half of the book dives further into the revelations bestowed onto Emma. The dynamic in seeing how she is processing all of this is keeps the audience locked in. Pacing never allows for this to get lost in the shuffle. Emma’s closing arc throws more mystery into the plot which peels more layers away to her new stat quo. It leaves much for readers to think about as they process what is sure to be the start of something truly special.

Maleev, Herring and Reed kick things ff with a frantic scene of Emma and the classroom. Once the FBI makes their appearance, the art team captures the fast moving moments with excellent usage of the word bubbles to match her reactions of doubt.

GOD has entered the playing field.

As Ian, Joy and Andrea converse in the diner, they quickly realize they are not alone. GOD is inside and making milkshakes? Ian is not believing the stranger is how he claims to be. Readers see a subtle way of proving the claim via Blood Milkshakes.

Ian still denies the claims. He thinks this figure might have more to do with The Takers. God tries explaining more in detail. A new thought is posed where not one being but rather all Humanity is God now. Ian isn’t exactly on board (still) but the rest of the group clearly has warmed up to the notion. From this conversation, a new member looks ready to join the group in their rescue attempt.

The conversation is interrupted by figures representing the Takers. With the action escalating, does the mysterious stranger sway fate in their favor?

With a hasty escape, the group reunites with Francis and Cynthia. It is at this moment, the dynamic changes forever. What course does the family now walk towards? As one’s past comes to light, the rescue mission appears to begin, but not without a hefty cost. The emotional pull begins on readers leading into a closing page that won’t be soon forgotten as the end appears to be closer than anyone wants to fathom.

Zdarsky throws readers off their game with the introduction of a major player. Bringing in GOD to assist the team demonstrates a new look at the set-up of the story. The explanation of reasons and motives are an easy follow to readers. It also allows new directions into where things lead. God’s story provides a huge set-up for when the group escapes the diner.

Featuring a stand-out character in the spotlight, Zdarsky elevates their story tremendously. The effects form this raise the stakes of the final act many notches. Zdarsky taps into the emotional connections these characters have to completely bring the small wins crashing down. The final moments of this chapter drop a huge blow to all parties involved, lighting the match for an explosive final run.

Loo and Alleyne feature a few different looks to God’s introduction. From Ian’s disbelief to Joy and Andrea’s amazement of his “creation”, it provides a few light-hearted moments before cranking up on the emotions. Once the group arrives back at the forest retreat, the tone shifts and focuses on the actions and feelings of a notable character.

The personal panels showcase a different side before ushering in an action that kicks off the conclusion. The imagery perfectly covers what each connecting character is feeling once the end begins. It exemplifies how there is more to this story than just supernatural beings. It’s about the caring each major character has shown for their small group and how important the final act is to sacrifice so much.

When a mysterious black substance coined “The Shroud” starts taking over the Earth, it leaves a trail of destruction and death. Years later, survivors have formed towers known as “Needles” to live on, hoping for a better tomorrow.

Jo and Canon are trying to find ways to survive in this dangerous new world. They come into contact with Pindle, who promises relief for a price. Readers see quickly all those promises disappear quickly. This is all due to Charon, a warlord in search of a stranger lurking around the Needle. Jo comes into contact with this stranger later and finds out he might hold a key to safety in this shroud era.

This chapter opens with a flashback to eighty days after the Shroud first emerged. Readers see the breakdown in society starting through a young Jo’s eyes. His parents killed. His world shattered. The chaos is everywhere.

As he prepares for the worst, he is rescued by Canon. The pair flies away to a new home. The moment impacts Jo greatly. It also influences him in the present time. With a black diamond in the possession of Rowan (the stranger Charon is seeking), Jo and his friends see this as a sign of hope. Can this be the break they have been searching for?

Readers see a valiant move as Jo and company dig further into the hidden agenda of Rowan. Can they stay out of Charon’s reach long enough to find out. The pages fill with wonder and excitement as a path is ventures with grave consequences for failure. As the final act unfolds, events lead to a parting image that can only mean this story is far from over.

The writing dives into the past, present and future of the world of the Shroud. The opening sequence gives readers insight to how quickly the world fell apart . Choosing to tell it through Jo’s eyes made for a solid connection to readers. The “present” of the book brings a deeper insight into the events unfolding.

Scott and Jack showcase the groups emotions as to what Rowan represents to their situation. The Snyders combine fantasy elements in with adventure flawlessly for where things lead. Pacing sets up for a fantastic finish. This story just keeps getting better and better.

Favoccia and Cogar continue to blow readers away with the impresssive visuals in this series. The flashback sequence fully brings to life the harsh new world young Jo now finds himself in. This concludes with a full page panel introducing readers right into the second act. The conversations reflect the the possibilities of Rowan’s cargo.

Readers can’t help but be caught up in the thrill of the adventure at hand. This is put on display with an exceptional two-page full spread. Just when readers think the bar can’t be raised higher, the parting image leaves no doubt of how incredible the journey is currently as its’ only just started.

Alex Greer is an American exploring Amsterdam in 1964. After leaving a club with a stranger, the next morning Alex finds herself waking up to a dead woman. Being taken away by the authorities , communication issues are halting her from proving her innocence. This is much to the liking of someone with a vested interest.

This issue begins with a man in a cell. He says his name is “John”. The orderlies attending to him are telling him his name is “Gary”. After a struggle, “John” is subdued. He is forced to endure electro-shock treatment until he says his name is “Gary”.

Meanwhile, Alex is being examined before being processed in a mental institution. Readers witness the new surroundings for Alex as a bleak place of hope. A fellow resident leaves her with haunting words of advice before the final act begins. Once that starts, the spiral into madness takes a great hold. The last image of this story will leave readers with no doubt Alex’s nightmare is only just beginning.

Phillips dives into the terrifying truth of what Alex is about to endure. The “John” portion of the issue exposes the inhumane way of breaking down the patients in the mental hospital. It is a cold, hard truth to the greater mystery Alex is now involved with. Phillips sets this up with no punches pulled, making a strong statement right off the bat.

Once Alex enters the story here, the pace is slowed down to let the mood encompass the reader. Each action Alex takes is given enough time to slowly build for a greater moment later. This gives a contrast to the remainder of “John”’s story, which speeds up enough to set the final act in motion. Once the story swings back to Alex, it doesn’t slow down until the story’s conclusion. The stage is set for both Alex and “John”s key players to cross paths soon which will make for quite the memorable encounter down the road.

Boyle’s vision of events mirror the hellish landscape of Alex’s tortuous saga. The cruel treatment of “John” connects with readers about how unforgiving the plans for him and Alex are. The anxiousness and uncertainty of Alex pops off the pages with Boyle leaving nothing held back.

The interactions with fellow residents vary but unite under the sense of small hope things will be alright. That feeling carries through until the final act. Boyle’s art constructs the big surprise heading into an lasting final image to close this chapter out with.

For this entry, we are returning to a supernatural tale from Comixology Originals that simply can’t be missed. Since its’ debut, the story of Ian, Cynthia, Joy and Alex, a group running an all-night diner which has more to it than a daily special, has been a major hit with comic readers. The final image of where tings were left immediately created a buzz for when the series would be back.

At the Comixology Originals panel at New York Comic Con 2023, the final arc was announced. Since then, fans have been catching up in digital (and print via Dark Horse Comics) form. It is an amazing read filled with imaginative takes, pushing the creative limits. Heading into the close, the creative team is not ending their shift on a sour note.

After surviving their encounter with Lazaruk and the “Justice Angels”, The remaining members of the vampire group look to figure their future out. With Alex lost during an encounter with the Takers (the governing body of the supernatural), Ian and Joy looked to take the fight directly to their doorstep to get their family member back. As Ian put it, “After all….we’re super heroes” which Alex’s fascination with begin their wild adventures. Others haven’t played their cards just yet as the world they know has been turned upside down.

This issue picks up where Joy is continuing the vigilante ways patrolling the streets. Ian looks on from outside the closed Diner. Readers can tell he appears troubled with what’s unfolding.

Meanwhile back in the Forrest colony, Cynthia and Frank are discussing the fallout of events. They break away for a quiet moment of normalcy. It’s a change of pace that both are enjoying considering what has transpired.

The story shifts to Joy on patrol. She jumps into a fight over a woman between two men. Joy’s interference isn’t welcomed and a scuffle breaks out. Joy handles events but some of the women watching events play out are also not happy with Joy.

Readers quickly see a surprise as they are not whom they seem to be. Luckily, Andrea, the former human ally of Alex and the group appears. What transpires next catch some off guard as more clarity about what is the groups’ next step comes into focus. That said, once the closing pages begin, everything readers thought they knew changes course as the last panel solidifies what everyone knew going in: The story here is far from over.

Zdarsky brings readers back with a well-paced return for Ian and company. Having Cynthia act as a narrator of sorts reflects the mood of everyone since the last issue concluded. The tone is one of being worn down and wondering what’s next. The moments with Frank give this story a “normal” break before diving back into the supernatural. The ramifications of losing Alex weigh heavy on the rest of the group.

Seeing how everyone is dealing with that loss demonstrates a wide range of emotions. Seeing where Ian is leaning towards solving their problem is something readers can sense the consequences of those actions. It all ties together with the final panels, setting events in motion for a memorable farewell.

Loo and Alleyne bring the human emotions out of Cynthia and Frank right from the beginning. Their panels are a nice transition in comparison to what follows after. The fight between Joy and her combatants lead readers into a bigger payout later when Andrea joins the party. The art mirrors the mood of coping with loss as the issue progresses.

Ian’s frustrations stand out as he lets readers in onto where his thinking is leading to. The concluding pages give a great surprise to what has been an excellent return for the team of the All-Nighter Diner.

Del Reeves never thought in his wildest dreams the world around him would change so much. After the fallout at a drive-in theatre fight, Del and others involved with the fight get caught in a bomb blast at “Daytension”. Once they come to, the kids witness first hand how much has changed!

This chapter begins with Pugg Lansky having a flashback to an incident with his father. Lansky is the person responsible for the fight at Del’s Drive-In Movie. Snapping back to the present storyline and Pugg’s head is reattached to a new body. It is a gripping scene that reminds all that not everything will have a happy ending.

Meanwhile the remaining survivors assess what has happened to their world. However, they don’t have time as they’re ambushed but some mutated creatures. Del quickly sees that the radio station is near by. A plan is made and the group braves the harsh environment. The group arrives but not with ease. Luckily, the DJ known as Popscile blares loud music to be a distraction.

Readers quickly learn that more has happened to this world than anyone knows. What secrets are found? What dangers lie ahead. The New World Status dives into the unknown as the closing moments build towards a shocking final page. After witnessing the visual, it will be difficult to patiently wait for the next chapter. There’s many things to like with this story.

Snyder keeps readers guessing with where the story heads now. The group of survivors have an uneasiness to their actions as they process what has happened. Being caught up in a letteral unstable environment pushes their limits. Snyder showcases how they are not ready for what lies ahead. The sense of fear and doubt haunt this group/ That said, a quick easter egg is dropped later in this issue that can only add to more distrust. This builds to the final page where the story bookends perfectly from where it started here.

Albuquerque and Maiolo waste no time blending in various elements to this story. From the opening flashback to the current state of Pugg, the art team leaves no doubt on the beginning of the story. There’s a subtle but excellent panel of how the survivors drive forward through a clear night sky via the coloring of panels. It gives readers a sense of calm before the script ramps up the speed. The latter half of the book may catch some off-guard but it plays into the essence of this thrilling sci-fi tale.

The sharp writing of Snyder blends with Albuquerque’s creative visuals to give readers an engaging chapter to an already impressive story. The elements of mystery and horror challenge Del and the survivors to new levels. This leads readers to be clamoring for the next chapter whenever its’ hitting the digital shop next.

The story begins with a haunting narration. There is a hand reaching through the yellow shading. Its’ intended target is a woman strapped and gagged to a gurney. Her name is Alex Greer.

Things change to what appears to be happier times. Alex is in a club in 1964 Amsterdam. Alex is dancing and enjoying the nightlife. A mysterious man tries to make time with Alex. She vaguely remembers him other than a big watch and bad hygiene. As the night takes over, Alex starts feeling the effects of the good time out.

Outside of the club, Alex vomits. The man tries to help her but Alex refuses. The man seems very focused on taking Alex somewhere for assistance until a stranger walks in and saves Alex from him.

Readers see how Alex’s night takes a different turn then expected. Heading into the final act, no one is prepared for where the story goes from here. Forget what you know and prepare for the unknown. If the final page is any indication, there is much to come to light other than a hangover from the night before.

There’s also a companion short story by Daleyna Abril and Marco Fodera that will be key to unraveling the mystery at hand.

Phillips scatters the pieces of the enigmatic puzzle being told here, you can’t help but be hooked for the long haul. Alex’s story starts out questionable from the openings page. However, it doesn’t take long for things to go sideways.

The build to the turning point almost feels like smoke and mirrors once the moment happens. It shows why Phillips is one of the best storytellers right now. From that moment, the story flips into a freefall which leaves many questions heading into the concluding pages, ensuring fans can’t afford to miss the next chapter.

Boyle’s art perfectly combines the feel of the 60’s with a haunting edge around it. The use of Yellow coloring plays such a big part in the visuals. There is no better case than the middle act. The usage builds around Alex’s new “friend”, building to a unique full page visual that tips readers off where things head next.

The switch of coloring brings the story back to a cold reality that readers will question especially after the final page. Get ready for a monster hit with this creative team only just starting.
