CREED: NEXT ROUND #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to a new installment of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest addition to a movie franchise via a brand new comic series from BOOM! Studios. Since its’ debut in 2015 with “Creed”, the spin-off story of Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) ahs been winning over fans with two very successful sequels, “Creed II” (2018) and “Creed III” (2023). Hitting comic shops this week is the continuation of the saga with Outlier Society (Michael B. Jordan’s production company) and Chartoff-Winkler bringing the franchise to the world of comics.

Jordan) jumps the story ahead from where fans last saw Creed and his family. Let’s take a closer look and see how things are shaping up now, shall we?

The events of this story take place a decade after the conclusion of “Creed III”. Quoting directly from the opening page: “AMARA CREED WAS BORN DEAF AND HER MOTHER, BIANCA CREED, HAS COMPLETELY LOST HER HEARING BEFORE THE EVENTS OF THIS STORY. THE CREED FAMILY USES A MIX OF BASL (BLACK AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE) AND LIPREADING TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.”

The first image readers see is Amara walking to a ring, clad in a boxing robe. With her father in her corner, Amara prepares for a boxing bout. Amara is facing Rebecca Gonzalez with a record of 5-3-0. Readers see the process of how Amara breaks down the fight. Her father waives a red towel, which Amara refers to “stop messing around and utilize your jab.” Amara complies and sets up to finish the fight with a win!

After the fight, Amara, Bianca and Adonis talk about the fight. Left with conflicting views, Amara looks at the trophy case and flashes back to when she first started. Readers see that since Adonis has retired, something has changed about his behavior in Amara’s eyes.

The next day, Amara is back in the gym, training with her dad. Amara is looking for tougher competition but her dad thinks otherwise. Meanwhile, someone is in the gym not showing the respect to Amara.

When she arrives at school, her friend Mel points out that there is an underground fight meeting happening later. With her parents away on business, Amara makes plans to go. What happens when she arrives at the fight club? Readers don’t wait too long to see Amara bring the action. The fallout sends her on an unexpected course that no one will see coming. No one ever said the road to becoming a champion was easy as the final moments show this story isn’t going to the judges for decision.

BREAKDOWN: Morgan and Jamison recreate the magic of the films with a story that carries a big Hollywood feel. Amara’s journey into becoming a champion mirrors some of the same youthful confidence personas conflicting with the elder experienced trainer. The writers play heavy into Adonis’ conflict post-retirement. Trying to balance being a father to being a trainer make for some strong character moments.

The family dynamic is another big element of this issue. Seeing Bianca and Adonis try to figure out a way to let Amara find her own path (to a degree) spotlight what makes these movies so special. The characters are easily relatable and readers can't help but to root for them to win. The final moments throw a solid curve into the mix and concludes a great first issue.

Santos and Chavis come out of the gates swinging with fast paced panels. The initial fight sets a solid pace for where things head into the story. The full page “Victory” panel closes the fight and transitions smoothly into the next phase of Amara’s path. These panels are followed up well with Amara looking into the trophy case and thinking of where she’s been and where she’s going.

The close-ups of Adonis and Bianca trying to figure things out breaks form the action to give readers a better connection with the characters. The training sessions with Amara mimicking Adonis play out perfectly to show how she’s growing as a fighter and slowly breaking form his shadow. The fight club panels push forward the emotions of fighting while adding more layer to Amara’s overall character. Great final sequence of panels to mix in the surprise ending and send readers into the next round with a loud visual statement.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The next chapter in the Creed saga doesn’t lose the opening round as readers are treated to an excellent first issue. Morgan, Jamison, Santos and the entire team repackage the magic of the movies and deliver it to the comic shop with superb writing and energetic art. You won’t want to miss picking this up on New Comic Book Day.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #109 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

For this entry, the current run of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Boom! Studios can easily be defined as legendary (and its only just begun). It has almost been a year since the new creative team took the reins and never looked back. In this time period, they have reinvented a classic villain and given the Rangers their biggest threat to date. With a HUGE storyline kicking off with “the Darkest Hour” in MMPR #111, the path to get there has been must-read material.

Rita Repulsa has returned in a monster way. Repulsa has transformed into the dangerous Mistress Vile. In her first move, Vile sends a huge message defeating Lord Zedd and leaving him lying near death at her feet. The Rangers have been on the defensive since the intial encounter and haven’t been able to catch a moment to bounce back. Vile has been striking them with pin-point accuracy with her attacks. No greater move has struck the Rangers more than her kidnapping and brainwashing Matt the green Ranger.

Now with an army by her side led by Matt and “The Vessel”, the body of Zordon under an evil influence, Vile makes her biggest push to accomplish her plan of unleashing the evil of the Dark Spector by controlling the Morphin Grid. There is an unlikely challenger to Vile’s plans that no one saw coming: A Morphin Powered Lord Zedd! With the huge showdown looming, a familiar face is lurking in the wing with plans all his own.

This issue picks up with Lord Drakkon freeing Kiya, the former Omega Ranger from her prison. With their past, the pair quickly become reluctant allies with the chaos swirling around them. Drakkon convinces Kiya to help activate the Morphin Arch on Safehaven. The pair is intercepted by current Omega Rangers Kevor and Yale. Kiya is none too pleased to see her replacement and make quick work of the pair until Zach and Trini arrive. Drakkon and Kiya escape with a warning to the Omega Rangers: Destroy the Arch before Vile finds it.

Meanwhile on Earth, Vile has already made great strides in her plans and taken Grace Sterling hostage. On the cusp of winning, Vile thinks Vessel is returning after disposing of Zedd, but reality is quite the contrary. Zedd arrives and is ready to finally handle unfinished business. As for the Rangers, they make a stand against Matt and Vile’s forces. Readers are in for an emotionally charged throwdown as the payoff for the builds hit their marks. On top of the action, there appears to be an unlikely shift of allies heading into an imposing final issue to lead into ending this arc before the darkest Hour begins.

BREAKDOWN: Flores kicks off the conclusion of the current arc with an issue fans will be very excited to read. The return of Drakkon and Kiya has been hovering in the background for a bit but their re-introduction plays into how desperate times have become. The theme of “Enemy of My Enemy is my Friend” shines thru and plants a seed for a later return with the Omega Rangers. The showdowns fans have been waiting for will lock in with readers. The Zedd/Vile standoff presents the duel fans have been waiting for with great dialogue and a surprise factor thrown in the mix. The battle that will stand out the most is Matt vs. The Rangers. Setting up how he was before Vile captured him and referencing the potential romance with Aisha, Flores adds an extra level of emotion to the panels. Readers will literally hear the drop in Aisha’s voice when she says “Yes”. Overall, the key players and stories all had enough time with the pacing to head into next issue bracing for the uncertain future ahead.

Di Gianfelice returns to art duties after Marco Renna filled in last issue and doesn’t skip a beat bringing the action to this issue. The battle with Zedd and Vile had a strong presence to it with big panels featuring the two finally squaring off. The coloring from Angulo (with an assist from Jose Enrique Fernandez) captured readers attention and never let go. The emotional reactions were featured throughout this issue from Kiya seeing the Omega Rangers again and especially with Matt vs. The Rangers. The emotional reactions of Matt and Aisha during the fight never was lost in the shuffle. Those moments told their own story which will link up with readers. The panel with Aisha says “Yes” is told just reading her eyes. Each sub-plot looks poised for a big conclusion next issue with the closing full page panel sending readers home on.

The dynamic duo of Flores and Di Gianfelice reunite to send the Power Rangers on the path to the Darkest Hour. With emotionally charged writing paired with incredible visuals, the hype surrounding this current story arc continues to be justified with another exceptional issue. There is something special unfolding with this series that all readers need to check out.

ROGUE SUN #13 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, Comics’ most exciting universe kicks off its’ next phase coming out of the huge crossover event “Supermassive 2023”. Leading the charge is one of the pillars of the Massive-Verse, who left readers hanging with a new stat quo in place before taking a small break for the Image Comics and Black Market Narrative event. If you are jumping in for the first time, TPB for volumes 1 and 2 are in stores now, but shocking plot twists are nothing new to this series as longtime readers have known. Considering who is creating the series, fans know to expect the unexpected and fully get their moneys worth!

Dylan Siegel’s life has been anything but normal since the passing of his father Marcus Bell aka Rogue Sun. Being the heir to the mantle of a superhero changes a few things. With unexpected dangers, new adversaries and a new family dynamic unlike anyone else, Dylan has had an interesting start to his heroic career to say the least. And we haven’t even mentioned high school yet. Dylan hasn’t been completely alone during this journey as he’s had astral mentors guiding him. The spirit of his late father and most recently Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN have been working on making Dylan the hero he potentially could be.

Last readers saw him, Dylan suffered an unexpected loss during a battle with Hellbent. One of his fellow classmates, Reggie, was killed standing up to the dangerous foe when Dylan was defeated. While distraught over the loss, Dylan turns control over his body to Caleb to finish the fight. When the battle has ended, Caleb surprises Dylan by maintaining control of his body, leaving Dylan as an astral spirit watching someone else control his physical body!

The next phase of Rogue Sun begins at the Crescent City Medical Center. The medical team on duty is finishing autopsies and one deceased body stands out for a gruesome image. Suddenly, one gets sick out of nowhere. They set outside to get some air and when they return, the body is gone but something else is in its place hovering overhead.

Meanwhile, Dylan is self reflecting on the recent events. Watching someone else live his life has made a strong impact on his view of the world. Caleb (as Dylan) makes his way to breakfast with the Bell family and the change is noticeable. Readers even see how the family is welcoming it. All the while Dotty is meeting with some of the well known villains of Dylan in an attempt to rehabilitate them but a warning is passed along that Mourningstar is coming.

The change is noted by his fellow classmates, especially his ex-girlfriend Vanessa. As much as things change, some things remain the same as Rogue Sun runs into an old friend with some unfinished business. Readers witness how the new dynamic between Dylan and Caleb plays out with another shocking twist to the story coming in the final moments. Get ready for another mic drop moment when the last page hits. This next phase of Dylan Siegel isn’t short of surprises.

BREAKDOWN: Parrott continues to push this story into compelling themes with this issue. Dylan is in uncharted territory watching someone live his life. The conversations and reactions of those around him is telling of what kind of person he was prior to the change. There is an epiphany starting to take place that Parrott begins to lead the readers on. Losing abilities he took for granted, Dylan lashes out at the worst time to Caleb concerning. Their relationship has deteriorated rapidly and justifiably. It challenges the motto of “with great power comes great responsibility”. One moment that really jumps out within these pages is a conversation with Dylan, Vanessa and Reggie’s mother. Parrott pens the scene with great care and drives home the impact of Reggie’s noble actions. Great final sequence to end this issue on and kick the next chapter off in style.

Abel and Renna split the art duties for this issue. That is never a bad thing when you have 2 extremely talented artists such as them working on a story. The moment of the villains meeting with Dotty displayed as a pyramid of mirrors for a full page panel comes across as a huge event for the readers. The emotional displays during the conversation about Reggie’s death hit very hard and add more weight to an already heavy moment. The action sequences complement the full page re-introduction of Dylan’s “Old Friend”. It’s fallout connects with readers sending them into the closing moments with a full page visual guaranteed to bring them back for more.

Parrott’s method of mixing in emotional moments with shocking twists delivers on another fantastic issue with amazing visuals form Abel, Renna and the rest of the team. The Massive-Verse is back in full swing and you don’t want to miss it!

KLIK KLIK BOOM #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we are jumping into a new series from Image Comics that reunites a team readers know from The Ride: Burning Desire. This series is sure to be one talked about on New Comic Book Day. Klik Klik Boom #1 by Doug Wagner, Doug Dabbs, Matt Wilson and Ed Dukeshire brings the mystery of Sprout and her unique vision of the world for a story that can’t be missed. Let’s take a deeper dive and peel back the layers of this intriguing tale, shall we?

The story begins in New York City. Someone is leaving polaroid pictures in various spots throughout the city. One picture is that of a family celebrating a birthday with some cake at a restaurant. Readers see that there is a mysterious woman (known later as Sprout) taking pictures of the family outside the venue. It appears as she is trying to use the photos to communicate with the family but the photos are clearly not welcomed by the celebrating party. After being threatened, Sprout leaves but not before leaving a picture of the cake on the window.

From here, readers see Sprout walking down the street when she’s harassed by two men. The one smacks Sprout on her backside. She responds by staring at them followed by taking a picture. Leaving the pair, she walks by a man walking down the street and smacks him on his behind. If this wasn’t puzzling enough, the next action leaves many questions.

Sprout goes into her bag and draws a gun from a sea of Polaroids of a man readers find out later is her grandfather. With gun in hand, Sprout walks into a bank. With no vision inside, readers see shots fired and someone screaming. Suddenly Sprout walks out unscathed, picking up a dropped picture of her grandfather. This leads to a flashback where readers get a little insight into Sprout’s past 12 years prior.

In the present, a reporter named Serena Biggs is on the phone piecing together the mystery of Sprout. Readers find out what happened in the bank and how that is the tip of the iceberg behind a bigger conspiracy yet to be revealed.

What is found during Serena’s investigating? Who is a vested party of interest? How does Sprout figure into all of this? Readers don’t wait too long to bare witness to paths crossing and more questions raised. Just when the answers seem to appear, they get lost in the rising danger of Sprout’s world leading into a closing act that proves the enigmatic story of Sprout hasn’t even begun to be unveiled.

BREAKDOWN: This mystery is one that will capture readers attention and not let go easily. Wagner presents Sprout as a lost soul in a big world. The initial interactions with the people of New York City comes across as awkward and curious. Keeping the bank scene hidden elevates the reveal of events later in the issue perfectly. The addition of Serena plays as a dual role for the readers. Serena is asking the questions they are thinking while trying to process what world she has now stepped into. The conversation when it is revealed why Sprout takes pictures is one of the noteworthy points of the issue. Wagner does a great job of keeping Sprout’s true motives elusive with mixing in surprise locations throughout the journey. There never is a loss of tension and wonder for the duration, leading into a strong final moment.

Dabbs and Wilson bring a certain mystique to the artwork for the book. The use of 5-6 panel pages gives a feel of the reader themselves are looking at the polaroids while moving thru the story. The bank sequence is a strong moment in the book. Using only a few wide panels, readers can sense the action taking place and the surprising fallout when Sprout leaves. The flashback time with Sprout and her grandfather gives the readers a solid idea of their quirky relationship without fully playing all the cards to what has transpired. This formula is shown against when Sprout is involved in an altercation. The use of small panels and bright colors tell just enough before switching gears. Superb closing visuals to lead into the next issue of what is sure to be a monster hit.

From the opening page, there is a certain enigmatic feel that captures readers and never lets go. Wagner orchestrates a slow burn thriller brought to life by Dabbs and Wilson’s amazing visuals reflecting the gritty and mysterious world of Sprout. This is a must-have on New Comic Book Day.

One fateful night has changed the Agate family forever. When leaving church, Pastor Lucas Agate, his wife Emily, his quiet son Chris are involved in a car accident when his daughter Harmony swerves from a boy standing in the middle of the road. The car crashes into a tree. From the crash, Harmony is convinced someone is in the road, but her father doesn’t believe it. Chris emerges from his silence and starts speaking about what Harmony is seeing. Chris’s story talks of a child who turned into a monster after some young boys bullied her. Chris swears never to speak a word, even when the boys are killed. With a small community rocked, The parishioners of Pastor Lucas’s church start losing faith.

Chris’s story is puzzling to his dad but it sinks in that this isn’t Chris, but his spirit as he and Emily were killed in the crash. Once confessing, Chris can finally rest with Harmony now carrying the weight of his guilt. Surrounding the car are more ghosts who want their story heard to gain peace.

This issue jumps in with Lucas and Harmony coming to grips with what has happened. The scenes are cold and reflecting the losses they have endured. Leaving the house in silence, Harmony sets out for some errands. Lucas is still waking up when he’s approached by a spirit wanting to talk.

With Harmony gone, What happens when it’s Lucas now talking with the spirit? What story do they have to tell? Readers watch with chills as the spirit confesses their tale. With a new dynamic in play, will things go smoothly or crash and burn? The final act leaves nothing behind as it closes this chapter definitively while featuring a final panel that adds more to the mystery at hand.

BREAKDOWN: Bunn role reverses from last issue’s fallout with Lucas stepping into the ghost conversation. The opening moments give the readers a sense of how things have weighed down the family with no real sense of improvement. The ghost appearance made for an interesting dynamic as Lucas fills in for Harmony. Its’ story is arguably the strongest pint of the book as the ethics behind it leave much to be figured out. The results show that nothing is “normal” about how these meetings are conducted. Bunn filters in Lucas’ anger with a newfound layer into his character. The closing will catch readers off-guard but makes for more drama as the story progress int the following issue.

Art duties are split again with Leoomacs taking the main timeline and Luckert stepping in for the flashback story. This is a winning formula as the story comes across to readers as truly told thru the spirit’s eyes. Luckert’s visuals bring the emotional backstory into the spotlight. It wastes little time in creating the sense of fear haunting the ghost and the burden now on their shoulders. Leomacs makes the opening scenes click with no words uttered. It’s only body language that the readers can cypher. The panels speak volumes on how things are deteriorated between Lucas and Harmony. It’s countered with some truly horrific imagery stemming from the ghost story. The closing panel is very subtle but is sure to set the Agate family into another tailspin before it’s all said and done.

Considering this book comes from the team over at Black Market Narrative, there’s no surprise on why it’s generating all the buzz it’s making. Deep Cuts #2 by KYLE HIGGINS & JOE CLARK, HELENA MASELLIS, Igor Monti and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou continues to highlight the history of Jazz music with a stop in Chicago 1928. Let’s not wait another minute and see (and hear) what’s happening here, shall we?

Last Issue, the journey started in New Orleans in 1918, showcasing a young musician’s rise in finding his voice in the city’s music scene. This issue kicks off in a dark theatre in 1928. A man is on stage, talking to the audience about how his instrument and the music it plays gives him life. As he continues to speak, the lights come on to start a musical number. However, this moment proves to be a rehearsal and the direction it goes in is one not hitting the high notes.

Immediately, the production is stopped by its’ director Gail Gelstein, who emerges from the empty seats with changes in mind. However, the pressure is building for a hit show because Gail’s show “Kansas, Oh Kansas”, is featured on Broadway. The theatre manager Herman challenges her to double down on the strengths of the show: the music. If there’s anything to save a bad show, it’s a great song. He gives her an ultimatum: Deliver a hit jazz song in 48 hours. The story centers around someone becoming a jazz man, so Gail is questioned why there’s no jazz music.

Gail reveals she doesn’t know Jazz, but Herman tells her to make it happen, no excuses. With time not on her side, Gail heads home to Chicago for a wedding. When she’s talking with her parents about the song she’s working on, Gail reveals it has no title. Her dad gives her a tip for help in the form of Ray Stroh. Stroh works for Wolverine Publishing and might be Gail’s only hope for making a hit.

Can Gail and Ray pull this off? Will the show be saved? Readers see Gail’s quest into making a great song isn’t such an easy path. There are many stumbling blocks to overcome but Gail’s not letting go of finding the hit she desperately needs. The story shifts into some different directions leading to a surprising final act. Gail’s search for the music might not be the only thing she (along with the readers) discovers along the way before closing off this chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Clark continue to display the power of jazz with another strong issue. Gail’s story is one of determination mixed with self discovery along the way. Knowing she needs to incorporate jazz into her production while not knowing anything about it made for a unique dilemma. The dynamic between her and Ray works well as his excitement to help is balanced out with her drive to secure the song. Another great sequence is the banter with her brother Toby. His unlikely advice plays a big part in sending the story into a new direction. The revelation of why Gail wants to make this song work so badly is a great twist that readers can easily comprehend. It all ties back to the power of music and the connections it makes. This all leads into the final act which comes off as a bit of a surprise, but plays out showcasing the impact the music has truly made in one person’s life.

MASELLIS makes a huge splash with the art in this issue. The style feels vintage with elements of abstract mixed in. The time period is fully captured within the panels. There are many incredible full-page panels sprinkled throughout this issue. The one kicking off the musical start sets a huge tempo for the rest of the issue. Gail’s train ride form New York to Chicago is another noteworthy visual montage capped off with her starring out the window while the conductor announces the arrival. Gail’s attention is lost in the song she’s building and the color scheme used to transition (excellent work by Monti) shows how lost in thought she had been in. This comes back full circle on the train ride back, led in by the panel with Gail standing in front of her suitcases. Masellis delivers on projecting the energy of live music with Gail’s time in a few night spots. The crowd reactions let loose on how the music affects them. The emotional reaction isn’t left there as sharp readers will see through the issue: the only times Gail smiles in this issue is when she’s listening to music. It’s a testament to how impactful music can link with someone’s soul.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we have arrived at the conclusion of Boom! Studios’ latest horror series. If you haven’t been checking this series out, HARROWER by Justin Jordan, Brahm Revel, and Pat Brosseau has been bringing scares with the vintage style of horror slasher films to much approval. With issue #4 now upon us, how does Jessa survive long enough to process the reveals of last issue?

Jessa thought nothing more of the Harrower as a myth in her small town of Barlowe, New York. Ignoring the haunting warnings of a teacher, Jessa and her friends went out for a party not knowing what lied ahead. The avenger of Barlowe had already struck with the brutal murder of the sheriff before turning its’ attention towards the party.

Once it arrives at the party, the body count starts rising. If not for the attempts to stop it by Carter Creed, the sheriff’s son, Jessa might have been the next victim. With the house burning around them, the remaining survivors make their way into the basement, which has many tunnels to every house in Barlowe. That is not the only reveal as Jessa’s boyfriend Reed has been leading the Harrower on its’ quest to “make Barlowe Pure”. With Carter and Reed fighting, Jessa makes a break for an exit to escape the Harrower. She finds a doorway into a gala where her parents and much of the residents of Barlowe are attending.

The final starts with Jessa processing what she just walked into. She is being thanked by the parents of those murdered for keeping their kids “pure and innocent”. Jessa is in pure shock of what is going on, but miraculously Carter is still standing and explains what is transpiring. Readers will witness the true secret of evil as the origin of the Harrower is revealed. It plays into the dark and disturbing nature of the small little town’s façade. That admission is only followed up by the true identity of the Harrower, which Jessa and readers will be reeling from. With all the cards on the table, it’s a nearly dead Carter and Jessa versus the unstoppable avenger of Barlowe.

From that confrontation, the fallout sets up one last confrontation that casts an eerie but bittersweet feel on an already frightening read. The closing moments end thing as all good horror stories with one last secret before resting this story until the Harrower should strike again…

BREAKDOWN: There is no shortages of shocks and awes that Jordan brings with this ending. Like any great horror story, it is always centered around good vs. evil. Jessa’s character becomes a reluctant hero during this (with a huge assist from Carter). The confrontation with her parents is chilling and plays into the fright factor of the tale. The introduction piece of the parents “thanking her” set the tone for the issue.

Beneath the surface, there are far more issues with this town than meets the eye. Jordan covers them up until unveiling all the answers to the questions. The final confrontation plays out as perfect as it should. It mixes in heart-break with one side winning but at what cost? The ending is one that will catch some readers off-guard but like any great horror story, an ending never means it’s truly over.

Revel captures the shocking moments to raise up the fear and anxiousness of this ending chapter. The cult-iesque tone of the residents of Barlowe hightens the danger Jessa walked into. The depiction of the Harrower’s origin is chilling as it progresses the connection with the town. The final sequence of events pop off the page as the emotional toll it is taking on Jessa is undeniable. The last confrontation will easily hit with readers as they watch the ultimate last stand play out.

The closing moments play into the horror genre excellently as the story winds down. The closing panels will excite fans while also make no mistake about how this story is ending.

For this edition, we are returning to one of the best imprints in comics today: Best Jackett Press, home of the Scott Snyder led imprint. With a roster of books such as We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle), fans have been treated to amazing story after amazing story. The issues have debuted digitally via Comixology Originals, following after in print form via Dark Horse Comics. The latest addition to the line-up debuted in October of 2022 and made an immediate impact on readers. Now at the pen-ultimate issue, the dangers have ramped up on the young adventure and his quest to find hope in a hopeless world.

In the 1960’s, the majority of children experience significant and disturbing changes when they hit their teenage years (range: 14-16 yrs old). The behavior being displayed can only be summed up as psychopathic. There is no way to describe way, just the insanity spread like wildfire across the entire population, with only roughly 8% dodging the change. The 8% were reclassified as “animals” of less than human. One such “animal” is a 12 yr old boy named Homer.

Along with his brother Poe, Homer and his friends Blake, Milton and Elliot try surviving the world gone mad. When Poe goes missing and rumors of him turning start growing, Homer sets out to discover the truth.

A clue is found in Poe’s room: E. C. Happ (the author of a cartoon known as “The Book Of Evil”) clippings which Homer thinks is the hidden location of Happ. With a belief that finding Happ will solve this nightmare, Homer and his friends set out to find Happ. During their journey, the young adventures can’t elude danger as they cross “shepards” until a bigger threat saves them for himself: a newly turned “Human” Poe!

This issue starts with Homer giving more background on the conditions he and his “family” have lived in. Readers can visualize the sheer hell the young boy grew up in with his brother doing all he can to keep him safe. It led into the importance of staying who they were and how hope represented the home they wanted. This ties into the importance of the color Yellow as that was the color of the door in the Yolk.

From here, the mood shifts to the frantic escape from Poe and the humans. The group is on a make-shift raft heading down a river, trying to stop Milton from bleeding to death (he lost his hand last issue). During the journey, Milton drops a food bag with gold-wrapped chocolate. Homer instantly jumps in to recover the food but is separated from his group. Once he swims to shore, another unknown group appears and makes an immediate impact on his journey.

What is this new group about? Homer meets with their leader and begins to process where things are now. Without his brother and his friends, what future does he have? Readers find out what this new group is about while sitting helplessly as a surprise blow is dealt to Homer that can only be classified as heart-breaking. The closing moments solidify why Homer’s convictions never waiver as the endgame appears to be approaching quickly.

BREAKDOWN: The unwavering belief of Homer that things can change grows stronger heading into the final issue. Snyder composes Homer as a tragic character who presses forward no matter what transpires. This first comes to light when he dives into the water for the snack bag. It is a small footnote but Homer belief in what “normal” represents to him that he’s willing to risk everything to keep it. The meeting with the new group brings up a new dynamic for readers to process. Is everything they present real or is this nothing more than a ruse? However the biggest moment of the book is a small conversation where when reading the dialogue, readers can actually feel the hope drain out of Homer. The final moments bring events full circle as the question of what will break first becomes evident: Homer’s hope or Homer’s reality.

In case you are new to the series, the art structure is very non-traditional to other comics. Emma Price deserves a great deal of praise for its’ presentation. However, when Jock adds anything to the pages, it elevates every page. The perfect example is Homer reliving the image of Poe with his knife. The haunting visual adds greatly to the dire feeling. The introduction of the group’s leader makes a big statement with seeing how their path could be Homer’s. The use of colors still play a huge part to this story. The symbolism of yellow jumps out as the story heads into the final act. It is an interesting mix of colors in the heart-breaking conversation that may play into something bigger in the finale.

The Odyssey of Homer and his friends takes an unexpected turn, questioning all he has known within Book Of Evil #3. Snyder, Jock and Price construct a superb issue with moments and visuals filled with small glimpses of hope in a declining and maddening world. When fans hear the name “Scott Snyder”, one of the genres most associated with his writing is horror. The term “All Ages story” hasn’t typically been associated with his work but man, can he ever write an amazing one! Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine by Snyder, with Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Chris Sotomayor and Tom Napolitano has been such a fun read and a highlight of the second wave of books with the partnership between Best Jackett Press and Comixology (Digital)/Dark Horse (Print Version).

Now heading into the conclusion, it is literally anyone’s guess where this series ends its run at. Let’s not delay any longer and deep dive into issue #5, shall we?

Dudley Datson is a young inventor whose life takes a dramatic turn when he stumbles into a plot involving the Prometheans trying to acquire a powerful invention from his mentor, Dr. Shae. When Shae is killed, Datson now becomes involved in her battle to stop them and the mysterious Perdix from achieving their evil plans. Datson does have some help in the form of a talking dog who is anything but average. Daedalus is a member of the legendary Athenian Family, and is a creator of an invention known as the Forever Machine, a maze-like conductor of energy. During their latest escape from Perdix, the pair wind up in the Forever Machine, which has been taken over by Perdix and distorted to his means. Datson leads an impossible escape from the maze and when the pair arrive back on Earth, it is revealed Perdix is not who he says he is. Perdix is actually Icarus, Daedalus’ son!

This issue picks up with the theme of “Dreaming Big”. there is a montage (much like the previous issues) of inventors and breaking down their trains of thought. Things shift back to the reality of Icarus addressing the people of Earth, “offering” them the honor of powering the maze. Daedalus’s confidence is broken as realizing he is responsible for all this. Datson calms his nerves and in a role reversal, Datson assumes the role as mentor, motivating Daedalus to continue to fight. They defeat an incoming Promethean scout ship and commandeer it to find Datson’s father and best friend, Ohno.

From here, readers see the emergence of Datson ascending into the role he has always been meant for. His plan is risky and near impossible, but as the theme of this issue goes, Datson is dreaming Big! Will his plan really work? The closing act picks up the pace bringing the long-awaited showdown to the center stage. The ending may surprise but if there’s anything certain about this series, it’s except the unexpected.

BREAKDOWN: Snyder pulls out all the stops for an outstanding conclusion. The story of Dudley Datson has been all about finding himself. Since the initial first appearance, Datson has evolved from naïve and awkward teenager to an established and confident inventor. The themes for each issue have tipped off the blueprint for his journey. Datson excels at the role reversal. Snyder pulling the switch helped elevate Daedalus with his character. The big plan of attack works because it harkens back to what gives Datson his strength: the love of his family. Seeing the confidence shine in him during the finale act was a natural extension of the growth. The closing act brought everything nicely full circle with leaving the readers on a positive note for what may lie ahead for the young inventor.

Igle and Castro set up the closing issue with some impressive visuals. Capturing the breaking of Daedalus was portrayed perfectly with reading his eyes when he felt the guilt sink in. The emotional reactions to events with Datson and his dad will connect with readers greatly as well. Seeing Datson beaming in front of him with such conviction during this crisis are panels that can’t be missed. The final standoff brings the action heading into the closing visuals which brings this incredible story to an end the only way it can: dreaming big.

The Rita Repulsa fans might remember from the TV show is no more. Out of her shadow has emerged a dangerous foe that the Rangers haven’t been able to stop yet. Her name is Mistress Vile. In a short amount of time, Vile has defeated Lord Zedd, captured and possessed Matt, the green Ranger, and now is in the final stages of achieving her plan of achieving ultimate power.

The only thing standing in her way is a morphin-powered Lord Zedd looking for revenge. Vile sends her enforcer to deal with him. During the fight, it is revealed that the mysterious figure is none other than ZORDON?!

The story opens up on the planet Bizerk. Vile and Alpha-1 are standing in front of a frozen figure…Zordon. It is revealed to readers that Vile has placed his consciousness in a time wrap, splitting it from the body! Vile frees him from the ice and without a conscious, Vile uses her powers to persuade him to her cause.

The story speeds to present time and “The Vessal” hits the scene, making a mindless walk thru the chaos around him from Vile’s forces attacking Angel Grove to head right to the Command Center. Making his way to Zordon’s chamber, the Vessal confronts Rocky, Adam, Alpha and Zordon! The action picks up as The Vessal disposes of the Rangers attack with relative ease. At this stage, he makes the connection with Zordon’s essence!

Readers see the two meet in an unlikely place with a meeting of two minds…literally. Both Zordons have their cases and stances, no one looking to budge. The conversation shifts to the Vessal’s ultimate goals which readers see where Zordon stands in response. The fallout is one that will leave readers guessing as the ripple effect can be felt on the final page.

BREAKDOWN: Flores brings an “angel vs. devil” approach to the conversation with the Vessel and Zordon within these pages. The pacing for the story allowed for a small moment with other characters but drove home the importance of these to meeting. Once they finally meet and connect, readers get taken on a sound trip thru the various emotions and memories both have. Seeing how both attack the other with key points kept this moment engaging as the high-stakes game they were playing rolled onward. Diving into the motivations for the Vessel fleshed out some questions readers will have and also positioned its’ future in an unforeseen direction. The conclusion of the issue leaves much to ponder as a key factor in this conflict seems to be ready to leave its’ mark.

Renna steps in for art duties and anytime he’s on a book, you know the art will deliver. The steady, methodical walk to the command center early in the issue links up to readers about how focused the Vessel’s mission was. The 2 page spread when they finally meet will be a visual to stand out as that moment sets the tone for the majority of the issue. The conversation comes across as direct and intense as one would expect. Seeing the reactions both have to the other’s verbal jabs highlights those panels right to its conclusion. Excellent final image to keep readers guessing at what’s next to unfold.

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that you don’t want to pass up on for New Comic Book Day! With the new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the talk of pop culture fans this week, it is very ironic (and simultaneously poetic) that the world of video games plays a part into this saga shrouded in mystery. Arcade Kings #1 by DYLAN BURNETT (Cosmic Ghost Rider), Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini welcomes readers to Infinity City and an enigmatic figure starting his own heroic quest. Let’s not delay and “press start” to this review already. Ready for the first level?

The story begins in Infinity City. A prize fight is happening in front of a capacity crowd. In one corner, a fighter named “Ziegler”. In the other is world champion Victor McMax! The action is flying in the ring, but looking from the outside are two young boys with very different personalities. One is Joe, who wants to follow in the champ’s footsteps. The other is his younger brother Ken, who seems disinterested in the action in the ring. Once the final bell hits, McMax retains his title via KO.

The story jumps a short time later and McMax announces his retirement under mysterious circumstances.

From here, readers are taken to Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. At the Round House Arcade, there is a commotion as someone was just defeated on a game. Sitting at the game is a figure wearing a unique helmet asking for who’s next. The figure is Joe. When a new competitor steps up, readers are taken on a flashback to three weeks prior where Rikio, the nephew of the arcade owner was assaulted by some punks. He’s saved by Joe, who fends them off. An offer is made following that Rikio can’t say no to: Joe stays at the arcade “to lay low” and in return, he will replace the broken joystick Rikio had and be the protector of the arcade. In three weeks, the deal seems to be paying off for both.

That is until a stranger named Molly walks in to challenge Joe. This is no ordinary player as Molly walks in with her own robot. Molly also says something that triggers a flashback to Joe’s past. What gets said to force an impulsive action? How does Joe fare to this unlikely challenge? Readers sit ringside as Joe has his biggest challenge to date. The fallout sets the tale into a new direction with a final act that keeps readers guessing what will happen next as the story levels up.

BREAKDOWN: Burnett is on double duty for this series and its easy to see he’s crafting something special within these pages. From the opening bell, the pace sets a high rhythm, giving readers just enough information about the young boys before jumping ahead to where Joe’s journey takes shape. His initial start is cryptic as not much is tipped off concerning why he’s trying to stay out of the spotlight. This changes dramatically when Molly hits the scene and peels back a layer of his past. The moment is brief but makes a big impact in the story. Joe’s drive for his cause is memorable as he thrusts himself into fighting when needed while running under the radar of his past. The closing moments are bittersweet as things shift gears but like every great mystery, not everything is revealed at the first chance. The closing moments bring up speculation of what has transpired over the years, btu this is nothing but win for the reader.

The artwork is high energy. The coloring of Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) makes the sights of Infinity City pop off the panels. It reflects the exhilarating pace of the fighting mixed with the overall story. This is illustrated perfectly with the 2 page spread in the beginning of the issue. Readers will feel the excitement in the crowd with the action in the match. This carries through each fight and it delivers without fault. Burnett’s art plays into the emotional rush of the action. There are great non-action sequences to with a final “walk-off” into the sunset balanced out with a strong closing visual to take readers into the next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

Arcade Kings #1 hits a nice 1-2 combo of action and drama that the readers won’t need to worry about the judges scoring. Burnett and his team drop an emotionally charged tale clouded in secrets and combat with solid writing and dynamic art that doesn’t need a cheat code. Make sure you level up your collection on NCBD with this issue.

ONCE AND FUTURE #30 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of one of the best and most imaginative series in all of comics. Once And Future #30 by Kieron Gullen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios. The saga of “retired” monster hunter Bridgette McGuire, her grandson Duncan and Rose’s battle against a resurrected King Arthur has been such an exciting read. Seriously, 30 issues seem to have flow by. That’s how good this story has been since the first issue. Never once has this comic not delivered on an epic read. With how things were left at the end of last issue, let’s not delay getting into this monumental finale, shall we?

The battle of England is at hand. With Arthur’s forces slowly dwindling due to Rose’s surprise emergence as the true Queen, there is only final play that could have major ramifications. Bridgette’s estranged daughter Mary has made a deal with the evil Merlin in return for her dead son Galahad to be revived. With a quick visit to the Grail Castle, the ending of the story appear to be at hand. Merlin has transformed into a dragon with his deal in sight: Duncan’s life (believing he’s Beowulf) for Galahads. The opening salvo is as intense as one would expect. Duncan is fighting to stay alive from a dragon and when things look it’s bleakest, Queen Rose comes flying on on a dragon all her own to save him.

All the while, Mary has a gun drawn on Bridgette ready to shoot. With the chance to bring Galahad back, nothing is left to chance. Readers are left to a very intense stand-off between Bridgette and Mary until a decision is made. The ramifications of this event are felt immediately. With the fate of Merlin now in sight, readers see how a noble sacrifice turns things upside down. The emotional pull don’t stop there as another major character says their goodbyes in an extremely dramatic way.

The epilogue is a fitting send-off to this series. After reading it, I don’t think this story could have truly ended any other way. Who gets a happy ending in this Arthurian fairy-tale? What happens once all the action is finally dealt? Readers will have their questions completely answered with a final parting image that can only be found withing this magical world.

All good things must come to an end. This is a bittersweet moment has Gillen sends Bridgette McGuire’s tale off with an excellent issue. McGuire has been one of comics most interesting characters. Sharply written, Gillen portrays Bridgette in many emotional places throughout this issue. The most noteworthy moments are her interactions with her daughter. Their dynamic has been one of the strongest pieces of storytelling. Both characters have similar personality traits but yet show differences in the final chapter. Where Bridgette is so committed to stopping the threat, she also shows a more emotional side in dealing with Mary a few times in this closing. Duncan and Rose also have standout moments as their connection remained a focal point thru this series. It’s been such a great read with characters that, even with the Arthurian element, can connect with the audience on a relatable level. Excellent work.

What can you say about Dan Mora’s art in this series that hasn’t been said? Mora IS the best artist in comics today. The action sequences with the dragons was exceptional. The moments felt huge watching Duncan and Rose battle the dragon Merlin. Take nothing away form the tension standoff between Bridgette and Mary. The sheer moving conversations will capture reader’s attention and not let go. The final one will be a lasting image fans will be chatting out for a while. Balancing all the vivid characters and battles is extremely difficult, but you wouldn’t know it because of how incredible Mora is at putting these all together. Factor in Bonvillain on coloring the book and how pages pop right off the paper, the imagery has never missed during this entire run. There was never a wasted panel in this entire run. A true testament to the art team on this book. An absolute pleasure to witness each time out.

Overall, Gillen, Mora and the team give readers a highly satisfying ending to this beautiful fable. With a lead like Bridgette McGuire stealing scenes with excellent dialogue in between the high adrenaline fight scenes, Once and Future never stopped pushing forward on where they could go with the story. It has been a hell of a ride and thanks for the memories. Do not miss this finale when it drops at the Local Comic Shop this week!

The life and times of Liam have gone in some weird directions lately. Working for the Census Bureau should seem like a more “normal” job but the clientele Liam has to count is not fitting that description. Last issue, Liam wound up in a dire situation involving some demons. This issue, his journey starts off in a pub. However that pub is filled with Leprechauns. Searching for the name “Shamus” is proving to be a issue. On the bright side, Liam seems to be picking up at his new job & finds a noteworthy solution to his dilemma. After a quick peek into his home life, Liam sets out on his next assignment.

With tablet in hand, Liam steps into a small bodega. After his “ice-breaker” goes wrong with the owner and young clerk, Liam is sent out of the store with no success. Becoming very determined, Liam does some investigating on his own. After confronting the young boy and remembering talk of “wishing” mentioned, Liam is still left with some questions. For better or for worse, he now goes to his boss for some “professional advice”. With that knowledge in hand, Liam returns to the bodega. When he arrives, is there ever a big surprise waiting for him! Readers will be just as shocked as Liam is to what lies ahead. It’s a great twist that fits perfectly in line with this very unique tale. The final image of the book will draw a positive reaction out of the readers to end this story on.

Bernardin and Freeman present another enjoyable tale within these pages. Liam is an easy character to get behind with his “loveable loser” persona. The humor is spot-on point this issue as well. There has been noticeable growth with his character this time as he maneuvers thru the wild workplace environment of his job. Liam’s most notable skill is adapting on the fly. There are two cases in this tale that he’s had to think fast to complete tasks. The initial shock of last issue’s first assignment is long gone. For being only a week into the new job, becoming comfortable in this landscape is huge. It is a very organic pace to his story which takes nothing away from the overall picture. Seeing a piece of Liam’s home life grounded the story briefly but enough that it was a solid change of pace before stepping into the ever-changing world he now works in.

Piriz delivers Liam’s story with a great balance of self-loathing and somewhat optimism. The facial expressions he has when dealing with his roommates and bus driver stand out this issue. With all that negativity around him, Liam still focuses on his job at hand. It helps to sell Liam’s plight to the readers as a character you can’t help but root for in some capacity. This story does go into some wild territory but with Piriz’s art, it hits all the marks needed. Liam’s world is more than it seems and the team here crafts it to the readers with a fantastic delivery.

Overall, Census #2 is entertaining with it’s charm and outrageous story. Liam Malone’s life has well-timed humor moments mixed in with a never mundane atmosphere. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz & the team don’t have a sophomore slump with this comic, so make sure to check it out when it hits Comixology this week.

ROGUE SUN #7 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry, we’re returning to the “Massive-Verse”, home of some of the most imaginative storytelling in all of comics right now! From RADIANT BLACK to THE DEAD LUCKY and the upcoming INFERNO GIRL RED, what the team over at Black Market Narrative is doing is nothing short of fantastic. This book we’re about to talk about is no exception and should be in your pull list every month. ROGUE SUN by Ryan Parrott & Abel has been one of the best new series of 2022, and with good reason. The story of Dylan Siegal continues to be a non-stop thrill ride with many excellent surprises along the way.

If you’ve read Ryan’s work on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers over at Boom Studios, this should come as no shock. Parrott’s one of the best writers in comics and now with a creator-owned character, Rogue Sun has brought that creative freedom out and then some. ROGUE SUN #7 by Parrott, Nick Cotton, Ze Carlos, Raul Angulo, Becca Carey, and Michael Busuttil is one of the best creative storytelling methods you’ll see all year. Let’s not waste any more time and start this latest adventure, shall we?

Rolling out from the pages of the “Super Massive” epic, Rogue Son hit the ground running with fans with the excitement. Dylan Siegal’s life has been anything but normal since the death of this father Marcus aka Rogue Sun in the very first issue! There has been nothing short of surprise after surprise for our young “hero” since. Issue #4’s reveal is one of the best of the year if you’ve been with this story since Issue #1. With the first arc wrapping up last issue (Now out on Trade Paperback) and a major change in place , one might think that Dylan would have a minute to catch a break. That’s definitely not the case and it’s a big win for the readers.

After playing a board game with his half-brother Brock, What starts out as a routine mission for Dylan fighting a monster in the Gulf of Mexico turns out to be more than meets the eye. Dylan is confronted by a mysterious figure named Ornate, who has a vested interest in him. The events of issue #6 have left an opening that Ornate is looking to fill: mentor-ship. Not willing to go back into having someone tell him orders (again), Dylan declines. Not willing to let go, Ornate sends Dylan on an adventure….one that Ornate lets Dylan choose his own paths without his guidance. From here, readers are treated to a fantastic idea that I’m super excited to see in these pages. What choices does Dylan make? Will he agree to Ornate’s offer? Get ready for a fantastic read and you’ll see how Dylan’s choices affect his future.

When I first heard the “Choose Your Own Adventure” idea being mentioned with his issue, was super excited. For anyone who doesn’t know, CYOA is a book series that let YOU, the reader dictate where the story went. One minor choice could have grave consequences. Others lead to happy endings. Leave it to Parrott (with Nick Cotton assisting this issue) to bring it into the comic scene and make it work on so many different levels. After the events of the past few issues with Marcus and his family, Dylan is in a weird place for the first time: On his own. Seeing how he handles his first threat solo was a great read. The conclusion plays into Dylan’s character perfectly. Dylan is anything but perfect, but he’s growing in learning how to adapt to his father’s world. Ornate is a great addition to the rogues of the Massive-Verse. Challenging Dylan to force his own paths was a solid touch to an ever-evolving character.

Carlos fills in for Abel on art duties and gives this issue a unique feel. The panels are high-paced action when Dylan is off forging his way. When the battle shifts to Ornate vs. Dylan, the imagery of Ornate’s powers impresses. Between the energy blasts, there’s great detailed work thrown in the possibilities shown to Dylan for his actions. The moments feel big and when readers see Dylan’s eyes through the broken Rogue Sun suit, it connects to what Dylan is now dealing with: growing as a hero on his own. Very cool sequence spread for pages 20-21 but you’ll have to read the issue to see those images.

Overall, the most creative line in comics hits another home run. Rogue Sun #7 delivers readers on a fun filled journey where THEY become the hero. Parrott, Cotton, Carlos and the team kick off the next phase of Dylan’s superhero legacy with a story that showcases why he was chosen for the Rogue Sun mantle, and proves he might actually be able to do it on his own. Incredible job by the creative team. Highly recommended. Don’t miss this book when it drops at the Local Comic Shop!

THE DEAD LUCKY #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

The Dead Lucky by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (alog with editor Michael Busuttil) has hit the ground running introducing readers to the world of Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi. Bibi’s story of returning home to San Francisco after being honorably discharged from the armed forces hasn’t gone exactly as planned.

With the growing threats of Morrow and the Salvation Gang trying to implement their visions onto the city, Bibi has taken action to save her city while dealing with her own mental health post service (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt). Two issues in and this story from Image Comics and Black Market Narrative (Home of the Radiant Black-led “Massive-Verse”) has a must-read for all comic fans. The Dead Lucky #3 is about to hit comic shops so lets take a deeper dive and see what’s happening here, shall we?

This issue opens up with a Morrow board meeting with the attendees discussing how their vision of San Francisco is going over. While hearing the feedback, plans are set in motion to disrupt the popularity of San Francisco’s new hero. Meanwhile, Officer Maria Garcia tracks Bibi and her friend Eddie at Bibi’s family’s’ restaurant. Maria is trying to give warning to the pair of what Morrow is up too. Her speech is meant with some resistance until Maria opens up a bit more on her reason for fighting Morrow. Readers see how quickly Maria gets acquainted with the team and how her help will impact Bibi. Readers will have to wait and see how this dynamic will all co-exist but for now, it looks like Bibi might have some much needed assistance to fight an ever-growing front from Morrow.

This thought might be short lived as Morrow amps up their search for Bibi. With drones in place, they make a bold move. When Bibi responds, the situation escalates in a manner no one is expecting. What happens now? With actions come consequences and readers will NOT be ready fro what happens during the final act of this issue. For a hero that relays on a bit more luck than most, is there enough for what’s going on here? It is a final sequence of events with an exclamation point parting image that readers will be so amped up to see how this all unfolds, they might be waiting at the LCS the minute they get done reading so they don’t miss out.

Flores continues to take readers on a journey with Bibi that never loses its’ hold on their attention. Throwing in Maria as an ally (or so it seems) in their fight is a very cool element to watch unfold. I’m still not 100% sold of her motives just yet, but that’s a good thing as it should never feel predictable this early in a story. Seeing how she connects with both Eddie and Bibi were standout moments of this issue as well. Morrow’s big play within these pages makes sense and pushes Bibi into areas where we haven't seen her in yet, but how they conclude this issue will have fans very excited.

Carlomagno, Iacono & Carey continues to hit on all the points for this series. From Maria's conversations with Eddie & Bibi to covering her moves from Valentine and Morrow, the emotions played out connect with the readers easily. Those personal interactions have been a strength of the book since issue #1. Seeing how Bibi is reacting to the final act is impressive as well. No spoilers here for that but the moment grabs the reader and doesn't waver on hitting it's mark with the fantastic art. San Francisco is ever changing with Carlomagno's art but it does steal scenes for how vibrant the city is to the story. It's always a visual treat when reading this series.

Overall, The Dead Lucky #3 continues it's incredible debut with another must read story. Flores, Carlomagno and the team present the world of Bibi with dynamic visuals and a story that continues to shine issue after issue. This isn’t your ordinary super hero book and I, for one, am very happy to see that each month at the LCS when the latest issue drops. Don’t miss this comic on NCBD!

The saga of the Chimera has been quite the horrifying tale. Five individuals with powers based off the five senses road free leaving death and destruction in their wake. In one certain case, Hannah is left behind after the Chimera kills her family on one of their ventures. Fueled by revenge, she embarks on a crash course to stop them by any means, if if she dies in the process. Thru the course of this story Hannah has held her own and been assisted by Regan, one of the Chimera who defects from the group to help Hannah in a form of forgiveness for her actions. With the endgame forming, Vanessa emerges as the lone member left of the Chimera waiting in the wings. Lurking around these characters is Barret and the Faithful, the worshipers of the Chimera who are playing their own game along the way.

Last issue was the calm before the storm. Hannah has now made a deal with Barret to get to Vanessa. Regan has been cut off from Hannah and sits back watching the final stand unfold. Barret leads Hannah to the campsite of the faithful where Vanessa is waiting. After decimating the faithful, Vanessa is primed and ready to go. The battle is everything you would expect it to be, with Regan and Barret watching in the wings waiting for the winner. Readers will get their money’s worth with this fight. All is answered with a conclusion fitting for where this story has gone.

Bunn finishes this tale with a resounding knockout punch. The pacing of this series has been one of its strong features. With last issue being focused on the build, the finale wastes no time ramping up the tension with the opening battle. Vanessa is back to her most ruthless while Hannah emerges as the vengeful protagonist leaving it all on the field of battle. The other side story carrys weight but feels as a complement to the overall main event. The issue closes with an ending that felt organic and fits into the mold of this series. Nothing came across as over-the-top. It’s an emotional close but one that will leave readers very pleased.

Scharf holds nothing back form the violence the series has been known for. Hannah versus Vanessa IS the fight fans have waited for. Scharf creates a legendary face-off that keeps readers locked and loaded on the story. Even the side tale going on has a “big fight feel” to it. The drama pours off the panels inserted in this comic. There isn’t just “Violence for shock value.” The tough moments mesh with Bunn’s set-up right to the letter. The action will leave fans with huge moments but the final image makes complete sense to how this story should be concluded on. Strong work by all.

We’re checking out the latest edition to the impressive line of comics from SCOTT SNYDER for Comixology Originals. In the course of a year, fan have been treated to We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle). Previously all were only available on Comixology but We Have Demons and now Night Of The Ghoul are available via print from Drak Horse Comics. The books speak for themselves in quality and content. Now on the anniversary, Snyder is ready to drop the latest book to an already star-studded line-up.

The ODPHpod talked with Scott a few months back and as soon as this book was mentioned, we’ve had it on our radars. Book Of Evil #1 reunites Snyder with a familiar creator: Jock, who fans know their work on Batman: Black Mirror, to welcome in the next phase from one of the hottest line of books in comics. Let’s not wait any longer and jump into this “Book”, shall we?

The world portrayed here is vastly different than what we currently perceive as “normal”. About 92% of the world’s population is now born as psychopaths This isn’t an exaggeration. This isn’t for shock value. This is the new reality that a 12 yr old boy named Homer lives in. Why the world is like this is very unclear at the this point, but the “average day” is made crystal clear to the readers from the opening page!

This issue is told by Homer as a journal entry. Readers can feel his sense of dread and fear as he’s riding a bus with an older woman…who’s foaming at the mouth to attack him should the bus cross the “Yolk Lines.” With each breath, she gets ready to attack Homer with scissors. Trembling with fear, Homer holds out hope to make it through in one piece. The moment never stops escalating until the bus shifts to the right side of the line. Just like that, the woman sits down. What feels like an event to the reader is just an average bus ride home for a 12 yr old in this new humanity.

As Homer continues his journal, he breaks down what has happened. In the 1960’s, children were changing as they hit their adolescence range (14-15 yrs old). This change was anything but average as their behavior had psychopathic tendencies. This was never a phase as it continued to spread throughout most the population, with no clear cut reason why this has happened. The remaining 8% are considered “animals” or less than Human. Homer is one of the 8%. He stays in “The Yolk”, a section designated for the animals to live in. With no parents to watch him, Homer stays there with his friends Blake, Elliot and Milton along with his older brother Poe.

To complicate things even more, Homer’s world is rocked with another obstacle to overcome. What exactly is that you ask? And what about a mysterious cartoon strip have to do with all of this, if anything? Readers will have these answered and also be waiting to see what Homer and his friends have to overcome next with a final image that gives some clarity on where this story is heading next.

Absolutely impressive first issue. Snyder crafts a world where insanity runs free and normalcy is all but forgotten. The words “New Normal” are often thrown around but with this volatile landscape, defining it as “normal” is anything but. Having the story told through Homer’s eyes via journal entry was a great play of storytelling. Every emotion could be felt within the 12 yr old’s words. It is truly fascinating how at such a young age (with impending doom coming when he matures) Homer is able to face this world and keep some hope. The story itself is a bleak and disturbing tragedy in the making. There’s no other way to say it, but Snyder never loses sight on how Homer braves the challenges and continues to press forward. In a sense, this is his own odyssey to return back to a time he’s only heard about but never lived thru: a normal life. Pacing was excellent and that final page’s words will haunt readers until next issue.

Jock’s art gives greater impact to the story when his imagery appears. Remember, this book is told in a journal entry format so there’s not traditional panels each page. Emma Price, who designed this book, did a phenomenal job with presenting it. The usage of certain colors like red (discarded terms) and yellow (“Animals”/Yolk references) in the dialogue added more layers to the story. When the images hit, Jock really drives home the horror and bleak aspect of this world. From the older woman’s rage on the bus to the almost optimism in the facial expressions of Homer’s friends waiting when he gets to their apartment, Jock’s art pops off the pages to deliver on making these moments connect with the readers. The usage of yellow thru the apartment is a great add-on to the story being told thru Homer’s eyes. There’s much to enjoy within the creative team’s work here.

Overall, Book Of Evil welcomes readers int a strange, dark world thru the eyes of normalcy’s last figures. Snyder, Jock and Price amp up on the creativity with their presentation while doubling down on the true horror of this world and the story about to be told. You simply can’t miss this book when it drops on Comixology this week. Highly recommended.

Lazaruk and the “Justice Angels” are almost at the end completing their goal. The Takers, who oversee the actions of the supernatural, are arriving on the scene. With Joy (“the Youngest”) presenting the case to stop this invititation, Lazaruk agrees…but plans on offering Andrea, the human ally to Ian’s team as a sacrifice. Luckily, Ian and Cynthia return to the situation to try stopping Lazaruk and the Justice Angels once and for all. Readers will be locked in for the happy “family” reunion, but all parties involved have little tme to celebrate. With Andrea wounded and dying, Alex (“The Teenaged Hero”) and Joy make a rush to get her medical help. However Lazaruk isn’t willing to let go of his plans. With a chase at hand, the action picks up and so does the consequences….

Who survives this outcome? Who’s life is changed forever? How does the family stand after the Takers make their approach? Readers will get answers to all of these questions and then some. The conclusion is fitting for the series which never lets up for keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. The final image will have fans talking and speculating. Get ready for one hell of a ride.

Zdarsky ends this chapter with strong emotional points. Without spoiling too much, the choices and aftermath of one character’s story will hit readers extremely strong. It’s fitting for where their journey has taken them. Even with its supernatural setting, the story is a superhero one at the end of the day. There is good vs evil and not everything has a happy ending. Zdarsky mixes in the character pints well with the fast pace of the opening. The closing slows things down as things appear to head into an entire new direction. Readers will not be let down by its ending but have to wait to see if this is truly the end.

Loo balances out the action with the drama flawlessly. With the beginning of this book, the pace was moving fast and Loo’s depiction matched that with big action scenes. As things slowed down once the end of the second act happened, Loo switched gears to bring out the emotional toll it took on certain characters of the book without making it feel too sudden. The use of the 9 panel page was perfect to start the transition to the third act on. The quality of this book never fails to impress.

Overall, The All-Nighter #10 ends this current story with a highly satisfying conclusion. Zdarsky, Loo and the team deliver on the big moments and ever-changing direction of this “family’s” journey. Jessica Harrow’s (after)life as been nothing short of an adventure. Being a reaper and guiding a stray soul into the ever-after, the soul escapes and Jessica follows suit into the land of the living. Once there, she crosses over where she can be seen as a human. With the mystery of how this happened looming overhead, Jessica has been on the run from Adira, her boss who doesn’t want her searching any more. She’s not he only one invested in Jessica as The End, a force of nature who is looking to restore balance. The journey has led Jessica and her friends to Las Vegas in search of Death, who has been lurking in Sin City for quite some time.

This issue kicks off with Death explaining to Jessica his connection to Adira. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as the twisted history unfolds. However, that’s not the only reveal as Jessica finally finds out the big secret about her: she is Death’s daughter!

With that feel-good moment, it becomes an after thought when The End crashes the party. What happens from here will shock everyone! Does Jessica survive this encounter? What factor does Adira play in this? And are readers ready for that final page?! You simply can’t pass on this issue!

Phillips continues the excellent work with this story. Just when you think you have everything figured out, Phillps throws everything out the window and hits you with something you weren’t expecting. This issue had many reveals, none arguably bigger than the reveal of Death being Jessica’s father. The fallout from that delivers on all points. This series never misses on perfect timing and placement for huge moments. The final parting points of this issue will have fans clamoring for the next issue. Jessica’s story is far from over and that’s a win for everyone.

Flaviano forges another visually impressive issue. The entire conversation with Death and Jessica easily connects with readers. The full page reveal drives home the importance of the moment. The battle with The End felt epic and it’s resolution couldn’t have been depicted better than what Flaviano presented. Even the subtle song lyrics for “My Father’s House” by Bruce Springsteen (which music has become a staple of this series) capped off a phenomenal read.

In the pages of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe books by BOOM STUDIOS, fans have been on the “Charge To 100” under the writing helm of Ryan Parrott for the past six years. From the events of the “Power Rangers” series, The inhabitants of Planet KO-35 have been getting brought back to life by the Death Ranger, who used Andros , a lone survivor looking for revenge, to accomplish this feat. Originally possessing the vessel of Andros’s friend Zhane, The Death Ranger has now taken control of the Omega Rangers (Jason, Yale, Zach and Trini) by tapping into the Morphin Grid! With an army of the undead forming, our heroes look to be in very dire times.

All the while in the pages of “Mighy Morphin” (written by Mat Groom), the earth-stationed team (Aisha - Yellow Ranger, Adam - Black Ranger, Rocky - Red Ranger, Billy - Blue Ranger, Kimberly - Pink Ranger, Matt - Green Ranger and Tommy - White Ranger) lost their command center during the Eltarian War and have been pulling an “Oceans’ 11” -esque heist to acquire a new home. During this mix, some of the team have been doing some self reflections on their futures and supporting Jason, who has been grieving the sudden loss of his mother. With no time to take a breath, Andros, along with Xi, Journey and Keron Vrin appear in the new command center to seek help against this threat.

The team comes up with a plan to stop the Death Ranger, but some are weary to trust Andros. Readers can’t blame some for acting this way. It is his actions that led to the Omega Rangers to be taken under the Death Ranger’s influence). Andros gives them a strong reassurance that he is committed to helping them, even if it means sacrificing himself to do it. Once the team fully buys in, IT’S MORPHIN TIME!!!!

The team teleports to the planet of KO-35 and know that there’s immanent danger ahead. It doesn’t take long before they are greeted by the Death Ranger’s forces. Once all the major players arrive, the battle kicks off with a fantastic one-page panel to kick things off! Rangers vs. Possessed Rangers and the undead…get your popcorn ready! There are a lot of great match-ups that will have readers on the edge of their seats reading. Don’t doubt that there is some big-time Zord action thrown in as well.

However, the main event will be the one fans will be most impacted by. Without going into heavy spoiler territory, One ranger’s journey is changed dramatically in an attempt to stop the Death Ranger once and for all. It’s a play that was needed to be made to try stopping the threat at hand and showcases what makes this hero one of the most noteworthy in all of MMPR lore. Get ready for that conclusion’s scene! Is that enough to stop the Death Ranger though? Read and find out!

The conclusion of this comic will be one to pull at the emotions of readers who have been with this franchises since day 1 or just jumping on board at the recent arcs. Some stories close for good, some stop for now, but the one thing that will always remain true is there will always be Power Rangers stepping up to fight the good fight. Very strong final image to close out on.

Give the man his flowers asap! Parrott leaves the world of MMPR (for now) with an incredible ending for all fans. This issue has many moving parts going on but Parrott balances out all the actions with some strong emotional work. At no point did anything feel rushed or forced due to the large cast of characters involved. The battle sequences flowed with great backstories behind them. Possessed Trini squaring off with “adopted” alien daughter Journey and Possessed Jason vs. Tommy are the two battles that hit all their points. However it’s when Andros gets involved with the fight versus Jason that this book picks things up tenfold. Parrott built everything to a fever pitch that when the resolution moment hits, readers will have a resounding “YES!” reaction. That said, it’s the closing act of this book that shows why Parrott’s run has all the well-deserved praise behind it. The narrator’s words hit very hard with how the MMPR world is now changed. Readers will go thru a wide range of emotions during this chapter but that’s why Parrott has earned the notoriety of being such a strong storyteller. Amazing Job!

As for the art, there are many people involved with this issue, but the majority of page time (and rightfully so) went to series regulars Moises Hidalgo (“Mighty Morphin”) and Marco Renna (“Power Rangers”). The art delivered on making this an event. From the initial one-page kickoff battle panel thru the fight scenes, Hidalgo set an early pace for the book that never fell off. The action felt big. This was crucial to establish how significant this battle was. Handing off the battle scenes to Renna never took anything away frm the overall story. Action was moving fast but always stayed on track. Even when the zords came into play, both artists had great moments to work with. The guest artists listed played an important role in dealing with that one Ranger’s final battle and resolution. It gave that moment a unique feel to illustrated what was happening. Renna’s work closing out a character’s story he’s worked with was fitting and added another level of gravity to the scene’s impact. The art teams really outdid themselves on this issue to close his chapter over MMPR on a definitive high note.

Overall, the Ryan Parrott era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ends with everything you would expect from someone who’s taken the Rangers to new heights and legacy adventures. Parrott and the all-star art teams gift fans with an issue they won’t be able to put down or stop talking about. As for the future of Parrott and the Rangers, it won’t be long before we see them together again as he will be teaming with Dan Mora on a new MMPR/TMNT crossover book coming in December 2022!
