*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** SEE ISSUE #111 REVIEW

The issue begins with Billy Cranston picking up his broken glasses. As he looks thru them, Billy notices his surroundings have drastically changed. He is now standing inside the Morphin Grid! As shocking that is, readers are more shocked to see Grace Sterling inside the grid.

With the events of last issue, Grace is dead. She apparently died at the hands of Matt, The Green Ranger possessed by Vile’s power. However, in this moment, Grace is alive and one with the grid. Grace explains how the grid is infected via the Dark Spector. Readers along with Billy sit in awe of the information and secrets revealed of what Vile’s actions have done.

The story shifts focus to Zach and Trini fighting off Vile’s forces. As things look to be failing for the pair, the rest of the Rangers swoop in and assist in the battle. After the melee, the united rangers come across one of the most polarizing characters as of late: Matt.

How does the meeting go? Considering the recent actions and accusations, the mood is extremely tense. Unfortunately, there is no rest from the attack from Vile and Spector. Tough calls are made as the Rangers are pushed to the breaking point. Just as hope feels lost, the final moments prove there might be some light at the end of the dark tunnel next time we see them.

Flores never lets up about how high the stakes are with this story. Right from the beginning, Billy seeing Grace (in this version) with the grave message is impactful. Emotions are still reeling from her death. The conversation goes from frank honesty of what’s happening to a reminder of why the rangers’ shoulders are big enough to carry the weight.

The portion with Matt reflects that as well. The reactions of what happened connect with readers as it will be a long road for recovery with not only the team, but himself as well. Pacing moves well to give both stories room to grow bringing it all together for the final page. Readers are on the road for something special with this saga.

Prasetya steps in for Di Gianfelice for this issue art and brings a different dynamic to the story. The moments inside the grid with Billy and “Grace” conveyed the gravity of the situation. The reactions in the conversation added a new layer to an already dangerous plying field. The action sequences with the Rangers and Vile’s forces deliver on excitement.

This balances out Matt’s struggles to deal with what he is going thru. The art demonstrates his shifting of feelings as it starts sinking in what has happened and how he played a part. The closing moments tie everything together with some final panels that will have the fandom on their edge of their seats waiting for the next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The latest installment of “The Darkest Hour” brings forth a dire reality to their current situation. Flores presents strong emotional moments with the writing while Prasetya brings it to page with energetic art. The clock has just started on the “hour” and fans will want to get on board early on New Comic Book Day.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED #1: THE COINLESS (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, It is crazy to think that the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted in 1993. Since that moment, the property has expanded outside of television into a well known global entity. Their reach on pop-culture has been vast but one of the most consistent areas has been their comics line. Fans of the franchise celebrating its’ 30th anniversary have much to look forward to from BOOM! Studios in the upcoming months.

One such event is a one-shot focusing on Drakkon, the wildly-popular villain of MMPR lore. POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1 by Adam Cesare (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal) Moisés Hidalgo (Dark Blood), Arthur Hesli and Ed Dukeshire with the mischievous version of Tommy Oliver thrusted into uncharted territory thanks to the growing threat of Mistress Vile and Dark Spector. Let’s take a closer look at the latest events in the world of the Coinless, shall we?

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1 by Adam Cesare (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal) Moisés Hidalgo (Dark Blood), Arthur Hesli and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Dan Mora - All art credit: BOOM! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In case anyone is unfamiliar with “The Coinless”, it is a universe in MMPR lore where this verison of Tommy aka The Green Ranger was a willing member of Rita Repulsa’s forces. Being renamed Lord Drakkon, Tommy (along with Rita) led a brutal and deadly battle against Zordon’s forces of good. When the smoke cleared, the Power Rangers as fans knew were no more. The Power Coins were no longer in their possession. While there still are individuals fighting the good fight, they are clearly outmatched by Drakkon.

Last readers saw Drakkon, he was lurking around Safehaven. After freeing Kiya, a fallen ranger, from her prison, the pair escape thru a morphin arch with an ominous warning to the Omega Rangers. The message was clear: Destroy The Arch after because Vile will be invincible if she gets to it.

As this issue kicks off, Tommy and Kiya have returned to the world of the Coinless. Drakkon thinks the world is as he left it. However, as the pair progress thru Angel Grove, that idea disappears quickly. The force of Dark Spector attack them! The odds to not appear to be in their favor until back-up arrives in the form of Trini and Scorpina!

The meeting isn’t exactly cordial as Drakkon is not a friend, but as the saying goes, “The Enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Kiya and Scorpina are happy to ignore that and make a play to attack Drakkon. They are stopped by a familar face: Kimberly Hart aka The Pink Ranger or Ranger Slayer” of this universe for a brief time.

Being the voice of reason, Kimberly leads the group into a hidden bunker. At this moment, Drakkon nearly starts a riot amongst the survivors while revealing his plans to fight Dark Spector. Unknowing to all, the forces of Evil are already making moves in the shadows ready to strike.

Can the plan work? Will this group become a team in the name of good? What other secrets lurk in this universe? Readers are treated to the last stand of a falling universe. There are many surprises thrown in the mix while watching this unlikely team put it all on the line while dealing with the past. The final sequence of events send readers home with much to ponder and question if & when the next time the coinless universe returns.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1 by Adam Cesare (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal) Moisés Hidalgo (Dark Blood), Arthur Hesli and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Dan Mora - All art credit: BOOM! Studios)

BREAKDOWN: Cesare gives readers an exciting tale to which plays as a nice companion to what is happening in the regular series. Drakkon never changes from being a villain readers love to hate. The interactions he has with the survivors plays into his arrogance and corruption. Diving into much of the secrets of this universe made for a solid backdrop to the danger at hand. The landscape has drastically changed for Drakkon, which in turns makes him an uneasy ally. New readers might be lost in certain areas but can pick up quickly to the events taking place. The final moments drive home the importance of the mission, while leaving readers guessing about what the future holds.

Hidalgo is no stranger to the Power Rangers world. Being a former Rangers artist on a run with Mat Groom, Hidalgo picks right up harnessing the struggle of good vs. evil. Capturing the unhinged yet conniving deminer of Drakkon played a huge part in conveying the danger of Vile and Spector. There is never a shortage of great action sequences throughout this book. Those are equally balanced with the team’s reactions to Drakkon’s defiance in the face of defeat. Readers should enjoy seeing the pivotal panels bringing one of Kimberly’s biggest losses back to the forefront. The surprise panels hit their marks bringing hope, for however fleeting it is as the story races to its end. Hidalgo’s art reflects the dire times and bleak future ahead for the coinless superbly.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The dark times of the current Power Rangers story extends its’ grip into another universe with a thrilling adventure. Cesare, Hidalgo, and the team present an alternate time with an unlikely source of hope standing in the way of greater evil. Solid drama and fantastic action makes this a book to keep an eye out for on New Comic Book Day.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #109 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the current run of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Boom! Studios can easily be defined as legendary (and its only just begun). It has almost been a year since the new creative team took the reins and never looked back. In this time period, they have reinvented a classic villain and given the Rangers their biggest threat to date. With a HUGE storyline kicking off with “the Darkest Hour” in MMPR #111, the path to get there has been must-read material.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #109 by Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Taurin Clarke) for BOOM! Studios continues to ramp the tension up with hope slipping further and further out of the heroes grasps. Let’s take a closer look at the events unfolding here, shall we?

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #109 by Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Taurin Clarke) for BOOM! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Rita Repulsa has returned in a monster way. Repulsa has transformed into the dangerous Mistress Vile. In her first move, Vile sends a huge message defeating Lord Zedd and leaving him lying near death at her feet. The Rangers have been on the defensive since the intial encounter and haven’t been able to catch a moment to bounce back. Vile has been striking them with pin-point accuracy with her attacks. No greater move has struck the Rangers more than her kidnapping and brainwashing Matt the green Ranger.

Now with an army by her side led by Matt and “The Vessel”, the body of Zordon under an evil influence, Vile makes her biggest push to accomplish her plan of unleashing the evil of the Dark Spector by controlling the Morphin Grid. There is an unlikely challenger to Vile’s plans that no one saw coming: A Morphin Powered Lord Zedd! With the huge showdown looming, a familiar face is lurking in the wing with plans all his own.

This issue picks up with Lord Drakkon freeing Kiya, the former Omega Ranger from her prison. With their past, the pair quickly become reluctant allies with the chaos swirling around them. Drakkon convinces Kiya to help activate the Morphin Arch on Safehaven. The pair is intercepted by current Omega Rangers Kevor and Yale. Kiya is none too pleased to see her replacement and make quick work of the pair until Zach and Trini arrive. Drakkon and Kiya escape with a warning to the Omega Rangers: Destroy the Arch before Vile finds it.

Meanwhile on Earth, Vile has already made great strides in her plans and taken Grace Sterling hostage. On the cusp of winning, Vile thinks Vessel is returning after disposing of Zedd, but reality is quite the contrary. Zedd arrives and is ready to finally handle unfinished business. As for the Rangers, they make a stand against Matt and Vile’s forces. Readers are in for an emotionally charged throwdown as the payoff for the builds hit their marks. On top of the action, there appears to be an unlikely shift of allies heading into an imposing final issue to lead into ending this arc before the darkest Hour begins.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #109 by Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Taurin Clarke) for BOOM! Studios

BREAKDOWN: Flores kicks off the conclusion of the current arc with an issue fans will be very excited to read. The return of Drakkon and Kiya has been hovering in the background for a bit but their re-introduction plays into how desperate times have become. The theme of “Enemy of My Enemy is my Friend” shines thru and plants a seed for a later return with the Omega Rangers. The showdowns fans have been waiting for will lock in with readers. The Zedd/Vile standoff presents the duel fans have been waiting for with great dialogue and a surprise factor thrown in the mix. The battle that will stand out the most is Matt vs. The Rangers. Setting up how he was before Vile captured him and referencing the potential romance with Aisha, Flores adds an extra level of emotion to the panels. Readers will literally hear the drop in Aisha’s voice when she says “Yes”. Overall, the key players and stories all had enough time with the pacing to head into next issue bracing for the uncertain future ahead.

Di Gianfelice returns to art duties after Marco Renna filled in last issue and doesn’t skip a beat bringing the action to this issue. The battle with Zedd and Vile had a strong presence to it with big panels featuring the two finally squaring off. The coloring from Angulo (with an assist from Jose Enrique Fernandez) captured readers attention and never let go. The emotional reactions were featured throughout this issue from Kiya seeing the Omega Rangers again and especially with Matt vs. The Rangers. The emotional reactions of Matt and Aisha during the fight never was lost in the shuffle. Those moments told their own story which will link up with readers. The panel with Aisha says “Yes” is told just reading her eyes. Each sub-plot looks poised for a big conclusion next issue with the closing full page panel sending readers home on.

The dynamic duo of Flores and Di Gianfelice reunite to send the Power Rangers on the path to the Darkest Hour. With emotionally charged writing paired with incredible visuals, the hype surrounding this current story arc continues to be justified with another exceptional issue. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Rita Repulsa fans might remember from the TV show is no more. Out of her shadow has emerged a dangerous foe that the Rangers haven’t been able to stop yet. Her name is Mistress Vile. In a short amount of time, Vile has defeated Lord Zedd, captured and possessed Matt, the green Ranger, and now is in the final stages of achieving her plan of achieving ultimate power.

The only thing standing in her way is a morphin-powered Lord Zedd looking for revenge. Vile sends her enforcer to deal with him. During the fight, it is revealed that the mysterious figure is none other than ZORDON?!

The story opens up on the planet Bizerk. Vile and Alpha-1 are standing in front of a frozen figure…Zordon. It is revealed to readers that Vile has placed his consciousness in a time wrap, splitting it from the body! Vile frees him from the ice and without a conscious, Vile uses her powers to persuade him to her cause.

The story speeds to present time and “The Vessal” hits the scene, making a mindless walk thru the chaos around him from Vile’s forces attacking Angel Grove to head right to the Command Center. Making his way to Zordon’s chamber, the Vessal confronts Rocky, Adam, Alpha and Zordon! The action picks up as The Vessal disposes of the Rangers attack with relative ease. At this stage, he makes the connection with Zordon’s essence!

Readers see the two meet in an unlikely place with a meeting of two minds…literally. Both Zordons have their cases and stances, no one looking to budge. The conversation shifts to the Vessal’s ultimate goals which readers see where Zordon stands in response. The fallout is one that will leave readers guessing as the ripple effect can be felt on the final page.

BREAKDOWN: Flores brings an “angel vs. devil” approach to the conversation with the Vessel and Zordon within these pages. The pacing for the story allowed for a small moment with other characters but drove home the importance of these to meeting. Once they finally meet and connect, readers get taken on a sound trip thru the various emotions and memories both have. Seeing how both attack the other with key points kept this moment engaging as the high-stakes game they were playing rolled onward. Diving into the motivations for the Vessel fleshed out some questions readers will have and also positioned its’ future in an unforeseen direction. The conclusion of the issue leaves much to ponder as a key factor in this conflict seems to be ready to leave its’ mark.

Renna steps in for art duties and anytime he’s on a book, you know the art will deliver. The steady, methodical walk to the command center early in the issue links up to readers about how focused the Vessel’s mission was. The 2 page spread when they finally meet will be a visual to stand out as that moment sets the tone for the majority of the issue. The conversation comes across as direct and intense as one would expect. Seeing the reactions both have to the other’s verbal jabs highlights those panels right to its conclusion. Excellent final image to keep readers guessing at what’s next to unfold.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

Set only months after their initial meeting, the combined forces of Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles have been faced with the combined threat of Krang and Rita Repulsa. Shredder had been laying low after his defeat from the merged forces. Casey Jones (longtime TMNT ally) went searching for him and wound up getting captured, or so readers thought. Meanwhile the united bad guys took the fight directly to Angel Grove with a takeover of the command center with the clear intent of accessing the Morphin Grid.

All would have been lost if not for an unlikely "ally” in the battle: Shredder! “The enemy of my enemy is my (temporary) friend” has never been more true as an uneasy alliance was formed to stop Rita and Krang once and for all. Their reasons vary on why but neither side is complaining about the support. The fight has worked its’ way across Angel Grove and Dimension X with many twists and turns to keep both fan bases on the edge of their seats with each issue. With last issue’s ending, Krang looks to finish the fight once and for all, taking over the Megazord in his own twisted fashion.

This issue opens up with the TMNT team (infused with the powers of the Dimension X broken morphers) returning to the Command Center to face off with Rita. However, Rita is waiting for them with a powered up and brainwashed Casey Jones poised to fight. Meanwhile, the fight for Angel Grove is in full swing as the Power Rangers (mutated into animal hybrids) attempt to slow down the Mega-Krang giant. In their current state, they can’t summon their zords, but one person can. Shredder activates a morpher and summons the Green Ranger’s Dragonzord!!! The feared TMNT adversary in charge of one of the most powerful weapons is a worrisome site but the Rangers get some more back-up as Zordon and Alpha arrive in a TurtleZord ready for action!

From here on out, the issue shifts to all action. It may be cliché to say “Big Fight Feel”, but that is exactly what fans witness here. In one corner, it’s DragonZord and TurtleZord vs Mega Krang! In the other is the Turtles facing off against Rita and Casey! Both battles live up to expectations with a few well times moments mixed in. They hit their marks and the fallouts feel impactful. The resolution plays into both fandoms with excellent parting moments. One moment brings everything back full circle to a degree, reminding readers of how great crossovers like these are when done right. The final moments play into more MMPR/TMNT lore, leaving endless possibilities of what’s next should we see these teams together again.

BREAKDOWN: Parrott constructs a closing chapter that will have fans raving in the weeks following. Balancing two fandoms of such pop-culture appeal can be difficult. Parrott plays into the strengths of each team to bring out the best in their heroic actions. Making Shredder a “frienemy” to a degree was a highlight of this issue and series. Seeing him use the powers of the Green Ranger & using the Dragonzord was a great twist. The uneasy tension he creates added to the drama. The Rangers kept waiting for the shoe to drop and him to turn, but he never did. This all plays into the long game of his ultimate goals, but seeing him save the day stands out. The Sub-plotline with Casey Jones also is a highlight moment for this series. With juggling so many characters involved, putting the spotlight on his arc broke away the sole focus on both teams for a great feature. Meshing up elements of both fandoms played out perfectly as well. The reaction after the mutation powers fade by the Rangers is prime example of this. Readers get so many possibilities presented and implemented that you can’t help but be excited for potential future adventures involving these two teams, should the situation arise.

Bringing in the premier artist in comics for this project was a huge win from the start. Seeing Mora bring his infectious action sequences to life is a whole other level of amazing. The battles of Zords pulls no punches with an attention to detail unmatched. The Mega Krang reflection in the TurtleZord’s faceplate is a prime example of this. There is one near full page panel that fans will be ecstatic to see and how detailed it is will absolutely blown fans away. Not everything this issue involves action to make an imprint. The anguish in Casey Jones’ face in the concluding moments of his story is another area. Mora blends in the quiet moments and gives them equal value to the full blown intensity of the big action panels. Mora gives readers much to digest with the closing panels. They will no doubt have fans buzzing about if and when paths cross again for these franchises.

FINAL POINT: 9.7 OUT OF 10

Parrott and Mora merge the best of what makes these two fandoms special into a series that readers won’t be able to stop talking about. The finale brings the action with the incredible visuals provided by Mora and Raul Angulo, giving both teams a battle living up to its’ billing. Parrott’s writing is superb tying in the emotional aspects of the young heroes facing a combined front by dangerous villains on the verge of finally succeeding in their plans. The series never falters and nails the landing with what transpires within these pages. You simply cannot miss this incredible series & finale!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As previously stated, the Power Rangers have their hands full with a more deadly version of their old nemesis Rita Repusla. With their first introduction, Vile left Lord Zedd (YES, THAT LORD ZEDD) lying near death at her feet. Vile also captured Matt, the Green Ranger and sent Alpha-1 out to cause some mayhem on the Omega Rangers. Suffice to say, that was only the start of the Rangers issues.

Lord Zedd was brought to Prometha Headquarters to heal but how safe is that place with Zedd residing in it? There’s little time to process as Vile and her mysterious enforcer crash the part in an attempt for find a morphin navigator which can lead access to the Morphin Grid. It is scary to think what an evil mind could do with that power. Readers see a small taste as Zedd himself has found a Morpher of his own! Now, the major players are primed for an epic throwdown!

This issue opens up Zedd revealing he’s had a morpher for quite some time, dating back to Power Rangers #16. With it primed and charged, Zedd reacts towards Grace Sterling and gives readers a small idea of what he can do. Meanwhile the Omega and Power Rangers are dealing with a broken Aplha-1, attempting to get more clues.

Back on Earth, Tommy catches up with an old friend (former Red Ranger Jason) but their talk is broken up by a now-possessed Matt leading Vile’s army into Angel Grove! There is no shortage of action here as the face-offs that have been building are now set to explode! Vile and her mysterious enforcer versus a Morphin-powered Lord Zedd! Tommy vs a possessed Matt! Things move fast to keep up with the action but is it too late? Readers get big payoffs for the building battles and even some extra reveals along the way. BREAKDOWN: This run continues to impress and set such a high bar! Flores has been setting up the face-offs unfolding here. Since Matt was captured, readers have been waiting to see what Vile’s work had done to him. Flores presents this version of Matt perfectly as his insecurities and fears with the team are fueling his drive here thanks to Vile. The one-liners he is saying are excellent verbal jabs to compliment the action. The same can be said for Zedd looking for revenge against Vile. Zedd being embarrassed by how he lost the first time has driven him to the point of being blinded by rage during the fight with Vile’s enforcer (which was accurately predicted on the MMPR #101 review). Pacing gives every battle proper time and the drama in-between has enough time to connect with the audience. If this wasn’t enough, just wait till the last pages and who is now getting involved. The hype you hear about with this series is well deserved of all its’ praise.

Di Gianfelice and Angulo bring the action throughout this issue. From the moment Matt walks towards Tommy, readers can instantly feel the emotions behind what’s going to happen. The depiction of the possessed Matt was done well and instantly signaled this will not be a friendly experience. Seeing Zedd unleashed was a standout moment as well. Seeing him not handle the bruise to his ego from the initial defeat has been a different look. This is reflected in his fighting style, even to one instance of being distracted just enough to take a strike. With all the action going on, the art team does sneak in some noteworthy panels involving Kimberly and Yale along with Zach and Trini. The art is very leveled on giving ample time to each story taking place. Nothing feels rushed to try cramming too much into the story. With all that going on, the final pages of the issue will be a buzzworthy topic about who appears. There is much to enjoy from the events of this issue.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In their wildest dreams, the heroes of Angel Grove could never imagine that one of their most legendary foes could become even more of a threat. Yet, that is exactly what has happened with Rita Repulsa who has now become Mistress Vile. Vile made an immediate impact when she dismantled Lord Zedd and left him lying at her feet in front of the young heroes to witness. Since then, Matt aka The Green Ranger has become Vile’s prisoner. Alpha-1 has pledged allegiance to Vile’s vision and challenged the Rangers. Factor in that Zedd is now recovering from his defeat and plotting revenge, the Rangers are surrounded by Vile’s efforts with no way out.

This issue opens up with a flashback of Rita and Zedd’s first encounter on Spearo V. Rita attacked Zedd on behalf of her father, Master Vile. During the battle Zedd throws Rita a proposition to join with him, seeing that she has outreached her father’s role for her.

Back at Safehaven, the Omega Rangers base, Both teams are having a conference call with Zordon and the earth based allies about what to do about Mistress Vile. In the conversation, it is deducted that Vile is looking for a way into the Morphin Grid but needs help doing it. The Rangers have some time to prepare knowing a Morphin Arch would be needed and one is revealed to be on Earth, which causes some tensions to be raised. Zordon orders the Power Rangers to return but not everyone is on board to comply to his orders.

The young heroes don’t even have an option to catch up and talk when suddenly Vile takes the fight right to their doorstep! How can they be ready for this surprise attack? It is a moment that readers will be excited to watch unfold. Even with a great cameo conversation and those huge action panels, nothing and I MEAN NOTHING will top what happens within the final moments of this issue and who is involved! It is a very safe bet to say that all of the Power Rangers fandom will be buzzing about the closing image from this issue.

BREAKDOWN: Just when you think this run has already given readers all the surprises it can handle, Flores drops a HUGE final moment that no one is ready for! No spoilers on that as it is one to be witnessed and not ruined. As for the rest of the issue, the writing demonstrates the growing frustration Vile is causing within the Rangers unit. There are great character moments involving Tommy and Kimberly reflecting this. The reveal about the Morphin master ruins furthered the wedge even more. Vile’s attack has left even the most confident members of the Rangers team nervous as to what is to come. Pacing worked well giving the story breaks to focus on character moments, one of which builds toward the concluding image that is going to leave fans speechless.

Di Gainfelice does a great job balancing out the Rangers’ struggles with Vile’s moves with excellent action sequences. The personal conversation involving Tommy respectively will connect with readers as a reflection of their feelings of recent events. It’s levels out with the battle at Safehaven. The action panels waste no time speeding things along, showing how quickly Vile’s forces are moving. The art caps everything off with a high-effective parting shot to send readers the message that the stakes just got higher involving this conflict.

FINAL POINT: The impressive debut run from the creative team of Flores and Di Gianfelice (along with Angulo and Dukeshire) grows its’ legacy even more with their latest issue. Superb writing and art turns up the pressure on the Power Ranger teams with an even more ominous danger looming in the wings at this issue’s conclusion. If you haven’t checked this run out, make it a point to remedy that situation this week at the local comic shop!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since the conclusion of issue #100, the Power Rangers haven’t had a moment to catch a break. After investigating a disturbance on the moon, they (along with readers) are in complete shock seeing Lord Zedd, their longtime nemesis lying motionless and defeated at the feet of a familiar face. That person is the former Rita Repulsa who has now become Mistress Vile! Making an immediate impact, she takes a prisoner in the form of Matt, the green ranger! Zedd defeated…Matt Captured….the Rangers are becoming increasingly frustrated at the fact they can’t stop Vile. After a signal from the planet Casentine indicates the Red Omegazord is in trouble, the heroes investigate to find Alpha-1 waiting for them.

Last issue featured Vile’s origin and an idea of where Matt’s future is heading. This issue jumps to five days prior with catching up with the Omega Rangers, whom readers haven’t seen since issue #100. After a quick catch-up with Zach, Trini, Yale and Kevor, readers see that they were on their way to the planet Casentine. The story jumps to present time where the Power Rangers (from Earth) confront Alpha-1. It is quickly established for anyone doubting that this Alpha is anything but a friend. Meanwhile on Earth, Tommy and Billy are assessing recent events with an unconscious Zedd lying next to them on a medical bed. Readers can see the anger and frustration pouring out of Tommy as he questions Billy about recent activities. All the while, Aplha-1 challenges the earth Rangers where he is getting the upper hand…until Trini and Yale show up! Can they swing the odds into the heroes favor?

Back on Earth, someone has awoken and that spells trouble for everyone. How does Zordon react to this revelation? Can the combined efforts of Power and Omega stop Alpha-1? What does Kimberly and Trini find out concerning Mistress Vile? Where are Zach and Kevor? There are many questions raised heading into the next phase of Vile’s plans and readers have much to look forward to with this issue.

Flores takes Vile off the board for this issue, allowing all the major players to get some panel time (along with seeing some old friends). Pacing worked very well to hit all the marks. Many readers have wondered when they would see the Omega Rangers again and this worked as a nice re-introduction back. Their part is significant enough but not overstepping the current story set-up. Seeing Alpha-1 as a legit threat was a nice add to the story. The fallout from its’ portion of the issue will be one to watch moving forward. The Tommy/Billy sub-portion gave the readers an insight to how desperate the situation has become. However, the one character to watch coming out of this issue is Lord Zedd. Seeing the ultimate bad guy defeated and weakened makes him an even more dangerous character. What levels is he willing to go to get revenge for being defeated? Overall, solid job juggling all the characters for this chapter.

Di Gianfelice mixes things up with big action panels and simpler, but equally as impactful personal moments with the various team members. The panels with Zach and Trini along with Tommy’s discussion with Billy are perfect examples of those emotional moments. It’s countered with BIG action pages when Alpha-1 takes on the Rangers. In a few short panels, Alpha-1 demonstrates why its’ a big challenge for the Rangers to handle. There is an excellent full page panel involving Zords that will be a fan-favorite relating to that fight. Seeing a broken Zedd will also have fans buzzing about what’s next to unfold for him.

FINAL POINT: The Mistress Vile storyline returns to breaking the rangers down from its detour origin last issue. Flores, Di Gianfelice and the team continue to make a lasting impression with this initial arc. If you haven’t picked up MMPR lately, make sure to fix that quickly. You don’t want this story to pass you by!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Six months have gone by since the combined forces of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles defeated Rita Repulsa and Shredder. The turtles have taken a trip to Angel Grove to catch up with their friends while Casey Jones has been looming in New York City looking for leads on the whereabouts of Shredder. During his investigating, Jones is attacked by Karai, the protege of Shreddar and an off panel figure with a sinister warning. Time passes but when news breaks of Jones going missing, Tommy (the Green Ranger) and Raphael start looking. All the while, there is a prison break for Baxter Stockman from forces connected to Shreddar and Rita. The comibined TMNT and MMPR teams arrive along with a returning Casey to intervene. That is until Casey reveals himself to be an evil Ranger helping Stockman escape!

This issue jumps in with the villain team along with Stockman appearing before the throne of an old Rangers foe: Mistress Vile! She lays out a decree of plans to take over the earth shortly. Meanwhile back in New York City, the MMPR and TMNT teams start forming a plan of their own to get Casey back. It is also revealed that someone has been kidnapping rogues of both teams for a time now. The clash of personalities starts bubbling up but ultimately cooler heads prevail. Zordon and Master Splinter converse while the teams focus on some training.

Meanwhile back in Dimension X, Krang confornts Casey or “Ranger X” in this case, questioning his motives. Rita appears and it’s revealed how she has him under her control. It also appears Krang might have been the assailant to capture Casey with Karai. During their talk, it appears Shreddar is still a person of interest lurking in the shadows. Rita doesn’t take long to wait to attack as a giant portal is opened over Angel Grove with a super army of rogues walking thru behind Rita.

The teams have been waiting or this moment but need something extra to step up for this fight. Fans will be super excited to see what happens with the heroes. Meanwhile Scorpina, Baxter, Rock Steady and Casey/Ranger X make their way to the command center , home of Zordon! Luckily for him, they’re greeted by a few heroes ready to fight. The action kicks into high gear with a few key plot moments fused in. With all the high-paced moving parts here, no one is ready for the final image to cap off what a thrilling take this issue was.

Parrott excels at getting all these characters equal time to add to the overall story. Even when all hell breaks loose when Rita leads her army to Angel Grove, nothing ever felt rushed or forced. Pacing worked to build Rita’s overall plans while giving a small break to move Casey’s story forward without overshadowing. The same can be said when the teams meet to discuss what has happened with Casey and Raphael’s emotions of frustration pouring then later the conversation between Zordon and Master Splinter. Each moment is key for various reasons, yet nothing oversteps. Structuring these events only makes the battle scenes connect every harder with the readers. The action delivers on showcasing the various parings and made for great breaks from the drama. The final moments builds to its’ shocking reveal masterfully to close out on a major point heading into the next chapter.

Mora + action scenes = Money! the later half of this chapter is all full throttle panels with both teams letting loose on the ensuing battles. There’s a great full page shot of both teams “assembling” after a two page spread officially announces Rita’s army into the battlefield. Right form these moments, readers can feel the anticipation for whats about to go down! Mora’s panels carry that excitement straight thru the conclusion of this issue. The emotions are there especially when it deals with Raphael and Casey/Ranger X. Seeing Raphael’s eyes after hearing a line come from Casey said more than any word bubble could. This high-level art never slowed downed, even with all the building towards the final moments. Excellent closing image to carry readers onward to the next chapter.

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo make up the heroes in the half shell known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. On the other side of this story is Jason (Red Ranger), Billy (Blue Ranger), Zach (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger), Tommy (Green Ranger) and Kimberly (Pink Ranger) who compose the legends known as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The last time these 2 groups came across each other, they were united in stopping Rita Repulsa and Shredder. The first series is an absolute must read. This story (which is NOT connected to the current MMPR series arc) is set six month after its’ conclusion.

The story opens up in New York City with Casey Jones, the notorious TMNT ally, chasing down Karai, the protege of Shreddar. With her master being gone since the ending of MMPR/TMNT 1, there is some concern from Casey about his whereabouts and rightfully so. One of the most dangerous beings of any universe has gone off radar? That can’t be anything good. However, an unseen assailant attacks Casey before he gets an answer.

One week later in Angel Grove (hometown for MMPR), the teams (along with TMNT ally April O’Neal) are trying to be “normal” out in the public but a fault image inducer might put that good idea in danger. All the while, April brings up concern for Rita being in the shadows an waiting for bad news to happen.

Back at the Power Rangers Command Center, Billy is working with Donatello on the image inducer while Jason and Leonardo are training. Readers witness the two share thoughts about their teammates before the tale shifts gears back to New York. Raphael and Tommy are alerted to Casey Jones’s disappearance and now go searching for him. What or who does the pair meet up with along the way? What other forces are at play that draw out both teams? The action kicks into high gear and readers are in for a BIG surprise before a final pairing shot that caps off the event’s initial outing.

One of the best in the industry does it again! Parrott is back at the helm for the sequel and doesn’t miss a beat picking up where things left off. Readers will look forward to great interactions between members of both teams. The pairing of Tommy and Raphael works so well for this beginning issue. This is the one that will stand out amongst the others, which all have solid points that they hit. Parrott gives every major player enough time to get their moments in while setting up for a bigger event later in the issue. It is a game-changer and one that sets a high tempo for the rest of the series to follow. Readers will be excited to see where things are heading towards now after a huge reveal late in the book. Very chilling line to complement the reveal with before ending this portion of the story…..and this is JUST the first issue! If this is any indication of what to expect, fans better get ready for something epic within this series.

Before we get into the art review, how incredibly AMAZING is this image from Dan Mora?!?!?!?!

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 #1

Mora absolutely crushes this issue! Right from the initial encounter with Karai and Casey, Mora brings a high paced feel to the action scenes. This is leveled out with the character moments between the turtles and the rangers. One of the best example of this is when Billy is talking with Donatello after the image inducer breaks down. Seeing Don’s reflection of being a Power Ranger from the first crossover and longing to connect with the morphin energy again jumps out and showcases how these characters mesh well. The Leo/Jason training segment was also very solid in showing how similar they are and what they feel about both groups. As great as these images are, Mora’s set-up of the first team-up within this issue will blow fans away. There is a two-page spread that will kick off a big battle that readers can’t help but be excited to see what happens next. Excellent final parting shot to close out the first issue.

FINAL POINT: With an event involving two of the biggest fandoms in pop culture, the expectation levels are astronomical. That said, Parrott, Mora and company kick things off with a debut issue you can’t pass up. The fantastic story is matched panel for panel with excellent writing to make this an event that needs to be in your pull list each time out. Don’t miss it!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Coming off the heels of Ryan Parrott’s epic finale in the “Charge To 100”, the Power Rangers haven’t had too much quiet time at Angel Grove to rest. Investigating a disturbance on the moon, the rangers arrive to see Lord Zedd, their most dangerous enemy laying defeated at the feet of the returning Rita Repulsa now known is Mistress Vile! Along with Rita/Vile is a shadowy figure (who I guessed a while back was a “Dark Zordon” clone). The rangers do not fare well in this confrontation and lose Matt (The Green Ranger) to Vile in the process.

This issue picks up with a flashback/memory like scenario with Zordon talking with Lord Zedd. Zedd realizes that Zordon is trying to save his life and they converse about Mistress Vile’s return. Readers see fist hand how Vile and her team tear through Zedd’s forces to acquire the Zeo Crystal.

On Earth, the team is regrouping and coming to terms Matt is in danger and what they can do to get him back. Frustration is mounting as the emotional toll is starting to appear on a few rangers’ faces. Once again, Vile doesn’t give the rangers much time to form a plan as a creature shows up in their hometown. The rangers spring into action but what is the true meaning of this attack? How do certain rangers react? What is the fate of Matt? Readers have much to process before they get to the final act which is going to set up an interesting conversation heading into next issue.

This issue features how much Vile’s actions have started to fracture the team. Flores pushes the emotional weight on Zordon, Aisha, and primarily Kimberly is this issue. Seeing her conversation with Tommy pre and post monster attack is prime example of the foundation starting to crack. The scenes with Zordon and Zedd were excellent and told volumes without taking up much time. Their history is always a great piece of storytelling and now a broken Zedd relying on Zordon made for great panels. I’m still sticking to my claim Vile’s companion is a “Dark Zordon” clone, which would be a great addition into the rogues gallery. The final act ramps up the drama and readers will have much to look forward to with this story.

Di Gianfelice delivers on a solid balance of action and drama with the art. The full page panel of Vile’s attack on Zedd’s castle will jump out at readers. The following moments carry that same energy and demonstrates how lethal the new threat is. It’s counter balanced with the impassioned expressions of Aisha and Kimberly. The pressure of seeing someone they care about and being helpless pours out on the page when coming to terms on what Vile has done with Matt. It all makes for an excellent issue.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue opens up with a flashback of three years prior with a simple night out with Matt feeling like the odd person out of the group. Fast forward to present time and the Rangers are on the moon seeing Lord Zedd has been taken out by a shadowy figure (who I guessed last issue was “Dark Zordon” clone) and the returning Rita Repulsa now known is Mistress Vile! Readers get quite the visual with a decimated Lord Zedd laying defeated on the ground! The heroes now find themselves in an awkward situation: they are the only thing standing in the way of Vile killing Lord Zedd?!

The rangers jump right into action! Tommy (White Ranger) block’s Vile’s attack with his blade while Kimberly (Pink Ranger) follows suit and Matt (Green Ranger) takes a strike to Vile from behind. This is answered with “Dark Zordon” slamming him face first into a wall. Meanwhile Rocky (Red Ranger) and Aisha (Yellow Ranger) are dealing with the Royal Throney. All the while Adam (Black Ranger) and Billy (Blue Ranger) are dealing with Vile’s minions outside Zedd’s castle. When the battle sways into an unfavorable direction, a proposition is made that throws everything in flux. What deal is made? Will the team make it out as a unit or does someone get left behind? Plus what about that final panel? Readers will have much to discuss after checking this issue out.

Flores continues the fast paced action with this latest issue. Once the team jumps into the newly established threat, the book doesn’t slow down and allows everyone to get a fair share of panel time. This is easier said than done, but Flores pulls this off with ease. This issue spends a good portion of time focusing on Matt, who plays a big role in the issue. The remaining team gets thrown into uncharted territory with the proposition that is made. That dynamic will be extremely fun to see play out.

Di Gianfelice introduces Mistress Vile to the readers in a big way. Seeing first hand how Vile stands triumphant over Zedd made for a big impact moment. The use of “Dark Zordon” as I refer to him as was excellent as well. Not much was tipped off as the true nature of the character but lurking in the shadows until he struck was solid. Seeing the rest of the Rangers in action made for a energetic read but also never lost focus with all the characters involved. The closing moments of the book will stand out as the final parting shot drives home how high the stakes are here.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #101 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, ot is time to start a new era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics from Boom Studios. ICYMI: Ryan Parrott left the franchise after six years of a legendary run after dropping the instant classic #100. In its’ aftermath, both Mighty Morphin & Power Rangers series have been merged into one legacy numbered book with a new creative team! Trust me when I say: The Power Rangers Franchise couldn’t have been left in better hands! MMPR #101 by Melissa Flores (THE DEAD LUCKY), Simona Di Gianfelice (ALL-NEW FIREFLY), Raul Angulo, Ed Dukeshire kicks off the new era with an issue you can’t miss. Let’s take a closer look and see how this plays out, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue opens up ten thousand years ago with an encounter with Zordon, longtime mentor of the MMPR and Rita Repulsa, their legendary nemesis. It feels as a final goodbye with Zordon finally imprisoning Rita for her crimes until something drastically goes wrong. It appears Rita is leeching the energy or essence of Zordon away, claiming hos body “would be lost in time and space”! Luckily it was all a dream, or nightmare for Zordon within the confines of the new Command Center. The moment shook him up enough to have Alpha continuing to search the space where the moon is located as a precaution (It’s been off radar for a while). Meanwhile, the Rangers are staying sharp training at the Promethea facility, while it appears sparks are flying between two rangers as well. Unfortunately, there is little time to enjoy the normal moments as the moon reappears! The team regroups with Zordon to figure out what’s going on. Once together, they (along with the readers) hear about a distress signal coming from there and no one is ready for who sent it!

The rangers fly to the moon and discover that not everything is what it seems. They see a group running towards them led by an old friend. Thinking they’re walking into a trap, the Power Rangers brace for battle. Once the group gets closer, not everything that they thought is real. One of this issue’s stronger points is flipping some established characters and themes. Seeing this character “out of character” was a great switch. Pushing through to the palace on the Moon, there are swerves galore (which isn’t a bad thing by any means). The action sequences are well timed and keep readers guessing at who is behind all of this. However the moment that will have people talking is the final page of this issue. Another big figure in the Power Rangers lore is back, and they’re not alone as a shadowy figure lurks behind them! My theory: Remember that quote during Zordon’s nightmare about “Body lost in time and space?” What if that body wound up in someone’s possession and is a dark, empty version of the MMPR legend? IS it someone completely new? Either way, Get ready! The new era of MMPR has arrived in a BIG way!

Talk about making a first impression! When it as announced Flores was taking over the book, fans should have been immediately pumped! Reders of “The Dead Lucky” know what kind of excitement to expect here. Flores wastes no time amping up the issue with nostalgia of past characters while balancing it out with a solid mix of action & character moments. The issue has many moving parts going on but Flores balances them with fair amounts of panel time. From the quick moments between Matt and Kimberly talking as friends to the team hitting the moon running head-on into the dangerous palace, Flores keeps the readers glued to the story. The pace is fast moving but nothing felt missed. There are so many great moments with this book that you need to read for yourself to not be spoiled. There's much win happening within this debut.

Di Gianfelice brings this story to life with great moments fans will connect with. Seeing the rangers interact after all they’ve been thru lately was a nice break. This shines with Matt and Kimberly’s small convo about his interaction earlier wit Aisha. The action sequences were excellent. The battle when they first hit the moon is a great example. It set a great tone for the other action happening with this issue. As the rangers are fighting the bad guys off, readers can feel how energetic these scenes comes across. Seeing how the Rangers react to all the reveals in the story builds the tension for the big ending was fantastic. Speaking of the ending shot, it couldn't have been done more perfect to welcome fans to the new era of MMPR!

In the pages of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe books by BOOM STUDIOS, fans have been on the “Charge To 100” under the writing helm of Ryan Parrott for the past six years. Parrott’s work has delivered some of the biggest moments in the MMPR fandom. If for some reason you haven’t checked out his runs on “Mighty Morphin” & “Power Rangers”. do yourself a favor and give those issues a read. “The Eltarian War” might be my current favorite story in all of MMPR history. For anyone worried about the series future, it’s in very good hands with Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky) and Simona Di Gianfelice on art duties coming on board with issue #101. That said, Parrott’s run might be concluding but he’s not leaving without a well-deserved star-studded send-off!

Parott is joined by Moises Hidalgo, Marco Renna, Raul Angulo, Walter Baiamonte, Sara Antonellini, Ed Dukeshire, Dan Mora, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Miguel Mercado, Eleonora Carlini, Hendry Prasetya and Francesco Mortarino for the legacy numbering, series merging MIGHY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #100! *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

From the events of the “Power Rangers” series, The inhabitants of Planet KO-35 have been getting brought back to life by the Death Ranger, who used Andros , a lone survivor looking for revenge, to accomplish this feat. Originally possessing the vessel of Andros’s friend Zhane, The Death Ranger has now taken control of the Omega Rangers (Jason, Yale, Zach and Trini) by tapping into the Morphin Grid! With an army of the undead forming, our heroes look to be in very dire times.

All the while in the pages of “Mighy Morphin” (written by Mat Groom), the earth-stationed team (Aisha - Yellow Ranger, Adam - Black Ranger, Rocky - Red Ranger, Billy - Blue Ranger, Kimberly - Pink Ranger, Matt - Green Ranger and Tommy - White Ranger) lost their command center during the Eltarian War and have been pulling an “Oceans’ 11” -esque heist to acquire a new home. During this mix, some of the team have been doing some self reflections on their futures and supporting Jason, who has been grieving the sudden loss of his mother. With no time to take a breath, Andros, along with Xi, Journey and Keron Vrin appear in the new command center to seek help against this threat.

The team comes up with a plan to stop the Death Ranger, but some are weary to trust Andros. Readers can’t blame some for acting this way. It is his actions that led to the Omega Rangers to be taken under the Death Ranger’s influence). Andros gives them a strong reassurance that he is committed to helping them, even if it means sacrificing himself to do it. Once the team fully buys in, IT’S MORPHIN TIME!!!!

The team teleports to the planet of KO-35 and know that there’s immanent danger ahead. It doesn’t take long before they are greeted by the Death Ranger’s forces. Once all the major players arrive, the battle kicks off with a fantastic one-page panel to kick things off! Rangers vs. Possessed Rangers and the undead…get your popcorn ready! There are a lot of great match-ups that will have readers on the edge of their seats reading. Don’t doubt that there is some big-time Zord action thrown in as well.

However, the main event will be the one fans will be most impacted by. Without going into heavy spoiler territory, One ranger’s journey is changed dramatically in an attempt to stop the Death Ranger once and for all. It’s a play that was needed to be made to try stopping the threat at hand and showcases what makes this hero one of the most noteworthy in all of MMPR lore. Get ready for that conclusion’s scene! Is that enough to stop the Death Ranger though? Read and find out!

The conclusion of this comic will be one to pull at the emotions of readers who have been with this franchises since day 1 or just jumping on board at the recent arcs. Some stories close for good, some stop for now, but the one thing that will always remain true is there will always be Power Rangers stepping up to fight the good fight. Very strong final image to close out on.

Give the man his flowers asap! Parrott leaves the world of MMPR (for now) with an incredible ending for all fans. This issue has many moving parts going on but Parrott balances out all the actions with some strong emotional work. At no point did anything feel rushed or forced due to the large cast of characters involved. The battle sequences flowed with great backstories behind them. Possessed Trini squaring off with “adopted” alien daughter Journey and Possessed Jason vs. Tommy are the two battles that hit all their points. However it’s when Andros gets involved with the fight versus Jason that this book picks things up tenfold. Parrott built everything to a fever pitch that when the resolution moment hits, readers will have a resounding “YES!” reaction. That said, it’s the closing act of this book that shows why Parrott’s run has all the well-deserved praise behind it. The narrator’s words hit very hard with how the MMPR world is now changed. Readers will go thru a wide range of emotions during this chapter but that’s why Parrott has earned the notoriety of being such a strong storyteller. Amazing Job!

As for the art, there are many people involved with this issue, but the majority of page time (and rightfully so) went to series regulars Moises Hidalgo (“Mighty Morphin”) and Marco Renna (“Power Rangers”). The art delivered on making this an event. From the initial one-page kickoff battle panel thru the fight scenes, Hidalgo set an early pace for the book that never fell off. The action felt big. This was crucial to establish how significant this battle was. Handing off the battle scenes to Renna never took anything away frm the overall story. Action was moving fast but always stayed on track. Even when the zords came into play, both artists had great moments to work with. The guest artists listed played an important role in dealing with that one Ranger’s final battle and resolution. It gave that moment a unique feel to illustrated what was happening. Renna’s work closing out a character’s story he’s worked with was fitting and added another level of gravity to the scene’s impact. The art teams really outdid themselves on this issue to close his chapter over MMPR on a definitive high note.

Overall, the Ryan Parrott era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ends with everything you would expect from someone who’s taken the Rangers to new heights and legacy adventures. Parrott and the all-star art teams gift fans with an issue they won’t be able to put down or stop talking about. As for the future of Parrott and the Rangers, it won’t be long before we see them together again as he will be teaming with Dan Mora on a new MMPR/TMNT crossover book coming in December 2022! Until then, Ryan - thanks for the memories and the incredible books along the way! Don’t miss this issue at the LCS this week!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue opens up with Maavi telling Young Andros and Young Zhane, who are both heavily featured in the Power Rangers book by Ryan Parrott and Marco Renna, a bedtime story. She is telling them the story of Spa’ark, the Gold Omega ranger. That story begins with the Omega Rangers taking care of Sister Supernova, a figure that poes a far greater danger than they realize. After neutralizing the threat, they bring Supernova back to Safehaven. During the down time, Spa’ark has a conversation with Haza, another ranger on the team. Haza brings up Spa’ark’s isolation and possible reasons why. Unfortunately, they don’t get to finish that conversation as Supernova escapes and does the unthinkable: kills Haza in the escape.

Feeling responsible for what happened, Spa’ak embarks on a dangerous path trying to fix this wrong. With another threat arising, Spa’ark does some questionable acts, including working with the Galactic Maw, who is up to no good. . How does this play into the creation of the Death Ranger? Can Spa’ark fix things or will he only make them worse? What will his teammates do about these actions? How does this tie into current times? Readers will have all those answers and a great final page to tie everything up before returning to the “Charge To 100” run.

This issue is a great companion piece to what’s going on in the present time of Power Rangers. Allor gives a nice spin on telling the Death ranger’s origin. Having this told to the kid versions of Andros and Zhane is a great touch to explain what is happening here. The story flows with a steady pace with giving the readers enough time to figure out what’s happening. This works well for new readers to the lore as there’s enough of a guide to steer them into who is who and what is happening. The overall story caps everything up and leaves readers with a final parting shot that echos in previous books to tie things together.

The art teams did solid work here as well. Bringing the range of emotions out of Spa’ark helped draw readers to his point of view and desperate actions. Once the tragedy strikes, the issue hits its’ high notes as it shifts gears in bringing Spa’ark’s plans front and center. The panels show a great deal of emotions with what is happening in the latter half of the book. There’s a lot to break down with how we see the Death Ranger emerge but it’s brought to the readers’ attention without being distracting to where a new reader could become confused easily.

If you’re a new reader to this blog, I’m a big fan of Ryan Parrott’s work. Between the MMPR books and the incredible Rogue Sun, Parrott always delivers on great twists and fan moments (NOT to be considered Fan Service) that get readers telling each other “Hey! Did you see when (character) did (action). HOLY CRAP!” and so forth. There’s at least 2 moments of that in this book that a fellow press member and I had those reactions to. The pacing gives everyone time to shine and once Zhane’s plan unfolded, the impact could be felt thru the page. Another speculation point I’m making: for the amount of time focused on Journey, I’m almost banking on her playing a HUGE part in this story’s conclusion. Possibly a bigger role for her in the “Recharged Era.” Either way, it’s a great pen-ultimate issue before the big blockbuster in September!

Renna conveys a lot of emotional moments for two characters in particular during this issue. Both Jason and Andros have panels that exemplify the events unfolding. Andros, finally reunited with his best friend and the moments following carry weight along with Jason seeing what’s happening and trying to cease where the story is heading demonstrate these elements. There is a fair share of action sequences that Renna brings to life with ease. Events don’t stall for time catching the reader’s attention and getting the story to where it needs to be before such a huge issue forthcoming. The final panel is enough to generate some anticipation for this saga’s conclusion on its own.

The issue opens up with Kimberly and Tommy stuck in an experimental dimension that has gone a bit haywire. Some rogues have now made their appearances in this landscape. None of which have any love loss with the pair of Rangers. Forced to battle, the pair is completely overwhelmed with Tommy left extremely hurt in the altercation. Kimberly gets Tommy to safety and also some divine intervention in the form of an emissary Ranger.

The conversation gives some much needed clarity on what Kimberly has been dealing with during this story. For better or worse, there is an understanding. With this information, Kimberly makes a call on how to handle her situation. Without Tommy to help, how will this play out? Readers will get that answer and a sense of where the future lies for not only the Pink Ranger but the heroes of Angel Grove as well. Excellent epilogue to cap this issue off as well.

Kimberly’s story these past two issues has been an enjoyable read. Groom breaks down the uncertainty of the future very well. We as readers often think that heroes will do this forever, but at the same time, it’s a question that will pop up from time to time in comics. The conversations Kimberly has during this issue brings that to the forefront. The resolution to those questions is one readers will be pleased with. Readers are also going to be excited to see how Kimberly finds a way to stand up to the rogues.

Hidalgo’s work is such a great compliment to the story. The facial expressions of Kimberly give an added weight to Groom’s writing. They will definitely connect with the readers about what direction she is heading into from these moments. With all the talking happening here, there’s also a healthy does of action to balance. Just wait until you see the two page spread before Kimberly addresses the rogues. The action has big momentum to it and provides for some memorable panels. There is much for readers to be pleased with involving this story.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #22 caps off a great story for one of the most well known rangers. Groom and Hidalgo present Kimberly’s questions of what to come with exceptional storytelling and art. As all roads head towards the “Charge To 100”, this story is a solid complement to whats to come. Make sure to keep an eye out for it at the LCS this week.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off on Safehaven, where Zach and Trini have become the guardians of an alien known as Journey. Jounrey is aging extremely fast as now she is a teenager from where she was just a baby a few issues ago. The “parents” are catching that Keron Vrin, who had a rough introduction to Zach has caught Journey’s eye. While this is happening, evil forces are plotting against the Rangers in the shadows. This is to be expected as the Rangers declared their warning of protection to the universe. Once the rangers are called away, their plan starts to take form.

Meanwhile, the addition of Andros to the team has been one readers have been locked in on. The mysterious ranger has been moving in shadows with an agenda all his own. As the team makes their play on the Astro Mega ship, they’re met with resistance from the Xurix. From this initial battle, the Rangers make progress and so does Andros. What unfolds next with have readers very shocked with a last panel shot that will have the fandom buzzing on socials.

The story of Andros continues to hook readers within these pages. Side note: if you haven’t read Power Rangers Unlimited: “Countdown to Ruin” yet, it would be a good complementary piece to this issue. Parrott brings out the complexity of this character as his actions are completely justified by his means. The slow build on his ultimate motives has been written extremely well. Take nothing away from the rest of the issue, but once that last page hits, readers gt the full gut-punch of everything that’s happened prior. The Zach/Trini/Journey story is a fun break from the seriousness of Andros. Excellent balance.

Renna and the art team deliver another solid issue. The fight scenes with the Rangers and Xurix pop off the pages. They have a lot of high energy and big action to them. Without giving anything away, the latter section of the book is where these panels shine. Readers are in for something special with them. On the other side, the young love story with Journey and Kevor adds some light-hearten visuals to the book. The reactions to Kevor giving his advice to Journey about “what’s better” is a quiet yet perfectly placed moment in their story. Heading towards #100, Power Rangers is really picking up steam.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The team is back on Earth after”acquiring” a new command center as the old one was destroyed during the Eltarian War. With the team being in space, they returned to find out Jason’s mother had passed away. This has been an emotional story going on between both books (highly recommend Power Rangers #20). This issue focuses heavily on Kimberly/ As she goes to check on Jason, readers are seeing Jason deal with the loss of his mother . From here, Kimberly has some catch-up time with Trini, who’s on Earth with the rest of the Omega Rangers. This is a fun sequence seeing the two friends catch up on events going on, primarily Trimi breaking down events to Kimberly. It’s almost a great intro page for new readers who get the bullet points of some of the Omega Rangers adventures.

The conversation does carry a big impact on Kimberly, as she brings up points to both Tommy and Billy. Being a Power Ranger and the responsibilities along with the legacy is driving Kimberly’s motives this issue. The results lead a pair of rangers into a situation unplanned for. What will be the outcome of cementing the legacy? Readers will have to check this issue out and see for themselves.

Groom shows off some great character moments involving Kimberly and some of her fellow rangers. The conversation with Trini bring up a few points that have quietly been looming with Kimberly. Factor in the impact of Jason losing his mother and it pushes Kimberly to question where she (and the rest of the Rangers) go from here. The outcome makes sense as with trying to move forward is never an easy road. The ending of this issue will have reader’s attention and how this plays out should make for a fun story.

Hidalgo’s depiction of Kimberly’ conversation with Trini hits the marks for this issue. often, readers can forget that these young heroes are still young and have lives outside of fighting the forces of evil. The Mall sequence of events really gave this issue some light-hearted moments while also building up for the more serious nature of the issue’s final moments. Action sequences worked where they were placed in the story. Very interesting final page to close the book out on.

Keep an eye out for this book at the LCS this week.

The story kicks off on KO-35, where readers see a fallen ranger right before their eyes: Zhane , the Silver anger! From there, the timeline jumps back thirteen years to show Andros’s family being attacked and decimated by a mysterious figure. Andros watches his sister Karone being taken away and whatever else is left of his world is now gone. Zhane finds him but he’s not alone as there are Power Rangers fighting off the attackers. The boys (among others) are taken in by Rangers Maavi & Dhaza. From here, readers show how Andros is adapting to his new life.

Thebig shift in Andros’s story is when both he and Zhane join the Planetary Defense Syndicate. Albeit, both have their reasons for it. Zhane became involved to help more people. Andros’ sole purpose was to find any information concerning his sister and the parties responsible. Throughout his journey, Andros has never let go of those emotions from the past. Once they both graduate, an opportunity is presented to them both, one that changes everything even more than is realized at the time. In that journey, a hero is born and a hero is lost. How will this all play out and tie into the current series? read and find out!

Bennett really gave Andros a memorable back story with this issue. At the center of all this story is someone trying to find revenge/peace for what he lost at any cost. Andros shows many emotions as one his age would with the factors surrounding his life. The friendship with Zhane will connect with readers. Even wen Andros is ready to quit on himself, Zhane is thereto support him. This plays huge dividends for what happens later in the book. It’s a great companion piece to what i happening in Power Rangers with this character and foreshadows things to come in present time.

The art team back up the writing superbly on this book. The emotions of Andros are fully brought to life in these pages. It doesn’t stop while he’s young. The art team carry that through until the last page. Readers will also see the strength of Zhane’s friendship to Andros and how in never waivers no matter what as well. The final page sums up the feelings readers will have for this story perfectly.
