Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. For this edition, we’re checking out the next installment from a very cool book from Comixology Originals. Their line has been producing quality reads each issue and Red Tag is no exception. Red Tag #2 by Rafael Scavone, Rafael Albuquerque, Roger Cruz, Cris Peter & Bernardo Brice for Stout Club continues the saga of Lis (aka Lisa), Lu (aka Luciana) and Leco (aka Leandro), who fought back against a bad situation but have now become caught up in a political plot that is more than anyone had bargained for. Let’s check out the latest issue, shall we?

Red Tag #2 - On Sale April 5th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue is driven around an emergence of a dangerous character who’s sent to deal with the fallout of the three friends actions. Ze Fofinho has arrived on the scene and is looking for Noronha, who’s stolen phone has been the match to this powder keg situation. Last issue, his phone was stolen in retaliation to what he did to an innocent man. With what was on that phone, there are major ramifications if that information is in the wrong hands. Currently, those hands belong to Lis, Lu, and Leco.

While this is going on, Neto has emerged as a character of interest. Neto is running in the elections and promising major reforms that people in power don’t want to see. This is made evident when the 3 friends uncover plans to eliminate Neto. They make a bold statement that doesn’t go unseen. Meanwhile, readers get to see what Ze is fully capable of and leaves a lasting impression heading into issue #3.

Scavone & Albuquerque have something special going on with the story they’re crafting with Red Tag. This issue had great pacing and really gave some insight on the character of Ze. Readers get a great picture of how ruthless his character is and foreshadowing what’s to come. The slow build of what the friends have uncovered is another layer to what clicks with this story and issue. Throwing in Neto”s story was a great addition to the book as well. Each arc had enough time to tell what it needed to and keep you engaged right to the end of the issue.

Cruz’s art crushes this issue as well. The biggest stand out point is when the “heroes” are ready to make their move” in the latter half of the issue. How Cruz (& Peter) make the red in the panels pop is a very cool visual. It gives, in a unique sense, a heroic vibe to that point in the story. Everything else from Ze & Noronha’s exchanges to Neto’s moments were presented very strong.

Overall, Red Tag #2 continues it’s story with fantastic storytelling and art. The issue breaks down a great deal about the characters involved while ramping up the tension going into the next issue. If this isn’t on your comic radar, fix that asap! There’s a lot to enjoy from this book!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. On this edition, FINALLY…….Erica Slaughter has come back to your local comic shops! Something Is Killing The Children #21 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto & Andworld Design for Boom Studios is hitting shelves this week. With the success of the spin-off book, “House Of Slaughter”, how does the flagship series fare in it’s return? Let’s check it out, shall we?

Something Is Killing The Children #21 - On Sale March 30th

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off with a girl named Gabi talking to a detective named Carter. Gabi appears to have been thru a struggle of some sort and the conversation eludes to Gabi being the sole witness of whoever/whatever it was that slaughtered her entire family. They wind up going to a dive bar in Tribulation, New Mexico where Carter knows the bartender Riqui. As he’s explaining the situation, readers get the whole picture of events with Gabi’s family and the imagery is none for the squeamish. During this sequence of events, Gabi is outside the bar reliving what she’s witnessed. Readers will be left with a final page that’s sure to get them very hyped up for the next issue.

Tynion sets up a great story and I’m here for this. Keeping the focus on Gabi and the people around her really helped build this beginning up nicely. There is definitely more going with on her but this issue’s story is just the groundwork for what’s coming. Not complaining about that one bit. As shown recently with “House Of Slaughter”, the slow burn payoff is always best. Considering the events of the last page, there’s many directions this story can go in and the readers are going to win in the end,

Dell’edera’s art was solid as ever. Seeing the emotions of Gabi added a good layer to the story’s build. The one panel with a certain two word phrase is prime example of this. The flashback sequence of what happened to her family didn’t pull any punches. Readers really got how brutal that moment was. Even who/what is behind that attack was teased enough without giving anything major away. Everything was clicking with this issue and it ended with a very cool final page.

Overall, Something Is Killing The Children #21 delivers on a great set-up for a bigger story coming. Excellent story telling and art throughout this issue. The story of what happened to Gabi’s family appears to be only the tip of a bigger iceberg. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. There is a lot to really enjoy so make sure to get yourself a copy at your LCS when it drops.

Peter’s “old friend” Faith made a big return at the last issue. From the start, readers get to see their quick catch-up since the whole world is looking for Stanchek since he returned on the scene. After following Stanchek back to Psiot City, Faith sees first hand of what our hero is doing. There’s a bit of a “celebrity” vibe when Faith arrives and it gives the issue a nice break from the storyline. Readers do she decide to help him. It’s a much needed help but is it too late?

The strongest point of this issue when Young Ago is talking to a recovering Baxter about the events of last issue. Where the Harbinger represents hope, readers now see his impact on the team he’s been setting up here. However, when the Renegade shows up, all bets are off about what is going to be the inevitable showdown. he stakes are now raised yet again! Readers also see another glimpse of the Harbinger’s next threat (if he should survive the latest mission) or is that battle already done. Shocking final page!

Kelly & Lanzing work their magic yet again. the back and forth with Faith & Harbinger is a great conversation esp. with their history. Faith being ever the optimist balances off Stanchek great. The Young Ago/Baxter talk also delivered on some great character moments. Readers can start seeing the effect the Harbinger is having on those around him. Readers also have to be excited about the dramatic entrance of te Renegade here as well. The moment felt big and really picked up the pace of the story. No spoilers but….WOW….that final page!

Rodriguez delivers on the strong work known with this series. The Renegade’s entrance alone was incredible. It made the scene feel that much more impactful. Seeing how he set forth his plans in motion was very well done. The imagery made the moments more intense and with good reason. There’s something about how Rodriguez draws this character that captures reader’s attention and doesn’t let go. There’s only one thing that upstaged it and that was the final page. No spoilers here on that but that’s one way to leave an exclamation point on this issue!

The life & times of Peter Stanchek continues on it’s long strange trip. Harbinger #6 continues to showcase it’s winning formula to make it a must-read each issue. Great storytelling and amazing artwork. What else could you want from your comics? Make sure to pick his issue up from your local comic shop!

On this edition, we’re taking a look at Eden from Comixology Originals via Darkling Entertainment. Eden’s creative team is comprised of Matthew Arnold (of NBC’s “Siberia” & “Emerald City” fame), Riccardo Burchielli, Luca Salce, Ed Dukeshire & Will Dennis. This book will be released first on Comixology & later this year, Eden will be in print form via Dark Horse Comics on July 12th. Let’s not waste anymore time and jump right into this story, shall we?

The story is set around a Senator names Anna Croft & her husband, Ben who is a sheriff. The book opens with them and a few other escaping from cryogenic pods which have been holding them for an undisclosed amount of time. From the mad break, readers are taken back to where everything started. The Crofts are a “perfect” family with a young son, Jacob. With the Crofts on the campaign trail & Anna answering a reporters question concerning her anti-stance about cryogenic freezing of prison inmates. However, something has happened that drastically alters everything. The fallout becomes Anna & Ben are now frozen as prisoners.

Readers now see that when Anna & company leave their jail, that the world they knew is no more. They are thousands of years in the future where the world appears to have gone back into the prehistoric age. The story now shifts into surviving in a world that has no feel of normalcy. Can Anna lead this world back to some sense of what they know or is this new world too far gone even for them? Factor in other “inmates”, each with their own agendas, an ever changing environment, along with multiple twists to the story & you have a very impressive read.

Arnold really crafted an excellent story here. From where we start with Anna & Ben to the ultimate end, Arnold keeps readers guessing. One of the biggest factors is the supporting cast to the Crofts on “Eden.” There are enough unique personalities with their own stories going on that you won’t see what’s coming until the panel drops on the page. The pacing keeps the mysteries hidden very well also. The book is definitely something you’re not expecting. It’s got multiple turns in the story that you’ll need to re-read just to make sure it happened.

Burchielli makes this new “Garden Of Eden” come to life very easy. The characters involved all stand out with the mix of this new landscape they live on. Even the quick backstories of a few of them will catch readers attention. There’s quite a few moments with Ben that readers will sense and feel the tension of the moments he’s in based off the visuals. The last bit I will say is when the final act starts kicking into gear, Readers better be ready for some surprises that they won’t see coming.

Overall, Eden is a strong read that will take moments with the “perfect” family and take them into uncharted waters with a whole new world while questioning everything that they’ve known. I don’t want to spoil too much but rest assured, you won’t see the ending coming. It’s so well crafted, the only way to describe it is: Do they evolve or regress? you’ll have to read the issue and find out!

On this edition, we’re continuing to dive into the origin of the Phantom Ranger in this pages of Power Rangers Universe #4 by Nicole Andelfinger, Simone Ragazzoni, Mattia Iacono, & Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios. The series has been an exciting read thus far that has Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans talking about this mysterious character. After last issue’s events, our heroes are not faring too well. Let’s jump in and see what’s the latest events in this book, shall we?

Power Rangers Universe #4 - On Sale March 23rd

After the events of last issue, Our young heroes are facing a scary dilemma. The powers they tapped into the Morphin Grid for might actually be killing them. It’s not a healthy move to absorb all that energy as they did. It’s a sacrifice that they had to make but now the situation becomes a race against time. Meanwhile, The general hears of how there’sa “Guardian” with a “Suit” & opts to pay a visit….with an ultimatum. After a layer of the Morphanaut’s emotions are revealed, a move is made that could change to course of action involved. Readers will leave this book very happy with a final series of pages that might tip the hand of how things could be ending in this story.

Andelfinger has the story moving in the right direction with this issue. The story focuses a lot on the Phantom Ranger and his emotions about what is going on with the young heroes. Meanwhile, we did get to see hints of a connection from the Morphinaut to the antagonist in this story. Andelfinger is setting this up very well as I’m guessing there will be a major connection between both to be revealed soon. . Pacing was great overall. There was also a great fan moment to close this issue out.

Ragazzoni crafted some great action sequences in this book. When the Rangers had their action in this issue, it felt like a big moment that was jumping off the page. Readers will be very excited to see the final pages as well. Even the quiet moments with the Morphinaut and Ori was a nice change of pace moment that set up a lot for later in this issue. There’s a lot to enjoy from this issue.

Overall, Power Rangers Universe #4 continues on the great story of the mysterious Phantom Ranger. Great story and art this issue with a moment at the end Mighty Morphin Power Ranger fans will be excited to see. Check it out at your LCS this week.

First and foremost, no one does opening intro pages like Valiant. Even with a first issue, they explain just enough so you get the idea of what the books about before diving in. This is so clutch for new readers. For this book, it gives the breakdown of what Armorclads are: Exoskeleton suits built for fighting in wars.

Readers are introduced to the planet of Xeru. On this planet, there is a mineral known as The Pure with is important to overall survival to the people of Alpharon. Readers also meet Sam, Peris & Lela who are miners of the Pure. They also have very unique suits of armor called Iron Clads. Iron Clads are primarily for construction-esque jobs. Those who wear them are not exactly treated as equals by the military force helping in their mining mission. Readers are shown that there is a class system set up in this universe, where the iron clad wearers appear to be on the bottom of. Prior to the mining mission, there are military forces scouting the area for an enemy that is unseen.

During the mining mission, Sam’s rope breaks that is holding him from falling down the caves in an unsafe area. Sam becomes trapped when the cave starts collapsing in on him. Peris tries to make the save but is stopped by Sgt. Troy who deactivates his suit. Reason being: They can’t afford to lose 2 Iron Clad suits & Sam is considered a lost cause. Sam dies right before Peris’s eyes.

Later, the iron clads are going back to base when they are encountered by the huge bug-like creatures that were lurking earlier in the issue. They attack Sgt. Troy. When Troy calls for help, Peris halts the Iron clads from assisting since he was the one who let Sam die. Troy is overwhelmed and killed instantly. Peris rallies the rest of their troop to fend off the attack. However, there is a sense of uncertainty that this wasn’t a random attack by creatures. Solid final page to set-up the story for next issue.

Fun & fascinating read for a first issue. O’Connor and Buccellato introduce readers to a new part of the Valiant Universe. There is a lot of set-up work done in this first issue. The motivations of Peris are very interesting. Obviously, the most stand-out character thus far, it feels as when we find out about his story, the actions involving Sgt. Troy will have a bigger impact. The other characters will get their time as the book goes on, but no one really made an impact other than Peris (& Sam). This new world has a lot of promise. Very intrigued at where we are going from here with the story at hand.

Garcia’s art complemented the story very well. Alien creatures looked like aliens. They had a “Starship Troopers”-esque feel to them which isn’t a bad thing. Action sequences were solid and didn’t reveal too much of what the armors are capable of. Speaking of the armors, both styles looked good too. The world of Xeru looked interesting and with a story just unfolding, it will be something to see what’s going on in this solar system they’re based in. I know it’s still early but I’ve very interested to see how Garcia presents more of this new universe & world to readers.

Overall, Armorclads #1 was a noteworthy debut of a new corner of the Valiant Universe. There seems to be a lot of layers to the story unfolding. Once this book gets going, there should be some stand-out moments coming that will get fans buzzing. If you’re looking for a great sci-fi book to add to your pull list at your LCS, give this book a shot on NCBD.

CLEAR #5 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS - BEST JACKETT PRESS)

On this edition, we’re taking a look at the latest issue of one of my favorite series out right now. If you haven’t checked out everything Scott Snyder has been doing on the Comixology Originals line via Best Jackett Press with We Have Demons (with Greg Capullo On Sale via print for the first time by Dark Horse Comics March 23rd ) & Night Of The Ghoul (with Francesco Francavilla), you are missing out on some of the best comics out there. Clear is no exception. Clear #5 by Scott Snyder, Francis Manapul & Andworld Designs (Comixology Originals) has been delivering on a crazy, futuristic thriller that hasn’t let up since issue 1. Let’s not waste anymore time and jump right into this story, shall we?

The story centers around Detective Sam Dunes. Being a cop in a future San Francisco in 2052 is not easy. The world has been completely re-invented from the use of “Veils". Veils allow a user to re-create their reality in the vision of what they want. Want to exist in a historic time period? Sure. Want to change an outcome of something in the past? Possible. All for the right price as veils are big business. With the ability to see the world as any vision you want, what would you choose? Dunes isn’t someone who subscribes to this philosophy. Dunes would rather see “Clear” & see the world for what it is. However, when the death of his love, Kendra appears not to be what it seems, Dunes investigates what happened.

From there, the story of her death is much like the world existing to the readers: not what it appears to be at all. For Dunes, he’s challenged with continuing this quest for answers while questioning himself on why even try fighting what the world has become. There is a great panel in issue #1 when he’s staring into his helmet reflection saying “Why Bother” to illustrate that point. The story has taken it’s fair shares of twists and turns that have made this series such an incredible read. When we arrive to issue #5, things are definitely moving fast.

Dunes takes a dive into the water much like Kendra did to avoid being captured by Police for something he did not do. The similarities stop there as Dunes is rescued by a mysterious figure known as The Widow that helps to answer some of the questions he has been asking. It’s a great back and forth with these two characters as readers get some clarity themselves on what motivations are with this story. There are some BIG revelations from the Widow here that need to be read and not spoiled. The final page will have readers excited to see how this will all end next issue.

Clear #5 - On Sale March 22nd

If you’ve listened to the ODPHpod, you know how much of a fan I am of Snyder’s work. Clear is presented in such a unique take that it really stands out from other books. The question of how much technology has altered the way we see the world is a driving point to this series. Dunes’ mission of addressing this “problem” is one that’s not so cut and dry. Snyder never let up from this idea and it pays off here. After the true revelation of “Clear” is made, it actually gives some thought on understanding of Dunes & what he feels he needs to do. Snyder crafts this very complex story with some great thought provoking moments. By the time we’re at the end of this issue, Dunes is ready to close this story out, for better or worse in his eyes or others.

This story is great but without Manapul & Designs on this book, I’m not sure if I could see someone else doing the illustrations here. Visually alone, it’s one of the best books you’ll see at Comixology. Manapul brought the futuristic sci-fi element right to the forefront. San Francisco felt like a whole new world and with all the characters involved. This really shines thru with the black & white vs. color panels in this book to represent what is “clear” and what is not. Even the visuals of the Widow really gave this character a distinct energy that carried thru her conversation with Dunes. There has been so many incredible images coming from this book that the art team needs all the accolades it can get. The future has rarely looked this impressive.

Overall, Clear #5 sets up a big ending to an incredible story. Snyder, Manapul and Design have absolutely crushed this book right out of the gate. Snyder has created a simple murder mystery and had it evolve into a whole different story that never lets go. Manapul does some of his best work & presents a unique version of the future with tying in so many elements of the past. Highest possible recommendation.

For this edition, it’s post “Eltarian War” time for the Omega Rangers in the pages of Power Rangers #17 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Baiamonte, Sharon Marino, Sara Antonellini & Ed Dukeshire (Boom Studios). It’s a creative switch off as Marco Renna jumps from Mighty Morphin’ over to Power Rangers but the Omega Rangers face a new status quo from the fallout from the insant classic. Let’s see how our heroes are faring after the Eltarian War, shall we?

The Omega Rangers are back at Safehaven but all isn’t exactly back to normal. Jason is on a mission to track down Lord Drakkon. Finding him has become even more important after his actions in the Eltarian War. Trini is working on getting Xi back up and running. However the driving point of this story is Arkon and Zach. What starts off as a minor issue steamrolls into a wake-up call to all the Rangers. There are some great character moments here and a message that will define these Rangers for the missions ahead.

Coming off the heels of such an event, Parrott doesn’t miss a beat with establishing the new direction of this book. The past and recent events weigh heavy on these heroes, as they should. Trying to go back to “normal” isn’t an easy task. Each Ranger comes to deal with this in their own way & readers are left with a moment that will be buzzing around fellow fans for the foreseeable future. Great storytelling involving Zach’s story which sets up this new direction for the team. There’s lots to enjoy of the writing here.

Renna jumps into this issue feet first and lands perfectly. His version of SafeHaven he’s creating here stands out. This rings true with the quiet moment of Jason outside the base seeing the jellyfish. It gives a small insight into what will be come the new stat quo by issue’s end. Renna’s panels also shine during “the address.” Great final page setting up for next issue as well. Excellent job here.

Overall, Power Rangers #17 serves as a great jumping-on point for new readers. Parrott & Renna deliver a great lead in for what’s to come for the Omega Rangers. There is no mistaking the message being said here. If you were ever looking at a great starting point with this book, grab a copy from your LCS today.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. For this edition, we’re entering back into the insane world Of Basilisk by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire (Boom Studios). This book has been a dark & violent tale of the Chimera, five beings with powers based around the five senses. Their path of destruction has been a brutal one with one survivor on a suicide mission to stop them once and for all. After last issue’s events, let’s jump into the latest chapter of this insanely brutal tale, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

After a flashback of Hannah ( alone survivor from a Chimera attack) leaving the hospital, readers see her and Regan (a defected Chimera member) on the run from last issue’s events. What they find out (as readers did last issue) is a power play has started. Chimera member Vanessa killed Cara for her powers. Later in the issue, readers see a demonstration of this new Vanessa. Now more amplified, Vanessa tries baiting out Hannah and Regan for a final showdown. However, the best laid plans never go according to plan. What transpires next is a very well placed surprise along with a thought provoking final panel.

Cullen Bunn does it again! Just when we the readers think we know how this is all gonna play out, Bunn drops a great curve and changes everything. Vanessa’s story has really gone into another direction that I didn’t see coming. The story doesn’t shy away from the violence and brutality. Even the unlikely duo of Hannah & Regan can’t enjoy their wins because of how many twists this story takes. Issue #8 is no exception. It’s perfectly crafted to deliver on the action and drama. Very intrigued on where that last page is gonna lead to.

Scharf continues the strong work set with this series. The display of Vanessa’s new powers is perfect example of this. The story’s visuals have never steered away from being horrific and disturbing to show the Chimera’s capabilities. How Vanessa does this issue will shock some readers to think of what he can do now and what effect this will have on anyone who crosses her path. Even with the twists with this story, the visuals never let up and that’s a great compliment to the story. Another excellent issue.

Overall, Basilisk #8 continues it’s violent and terrifying saga with some great surprises mixed in. Bunn & Scharf deliver consistent quality work with each issue and there’s no drop off here. The fight against the Chimera has become a must-add on my pull list & should be for you as well at your LCS.

The Deadside War is heating up with a lot of familiar faces returning for the event. If you’re a Valiant fan, this is a must-read event. Let’s not waste anymore time and jump into this issue, shall we?

The issue picks up with Shadowman’s idea of making peace between the dead and living has failed. Because of his actions, Deadside is now unleashed onto the world. The Deadside now has a physical form. Along with her walking amongst the living, Blights have now crossed over as well. The odds are stacked against him. There is little hope left. However, with a world full of heroes, all is not lost.

Readers get some great cameos from all points of the Valiant Universe. They see how they’re reacting to this event. When we said, this is a must-read event, there was no punchline there. Anyone who’s anyone is involved here. The first wave of defense goes on the offense against the Deadside. Punk Mambo leads the Abettors into a direct battle with the evil incarnate. While this is happening, Shadowman is away reflecting on what’s happened and what will possibly come from this. How this all unfolds is a great read with a final page that will have readers very excited for what’s next.

If you are a new reader here, one thing you should kno is I’m a big fan of Cullen Bunn’s work. The story being crafted here is really pushing our hero to the breaking point. What was thought to have been a workable solution to end this madness has not worked. Jack Boniface has to deal with this and Bunn makes this a prime point of this issue. The hopeless battle between Mambo, the Abettors & Deadside brings that possible bleak future to a very real personal moment thru Jack’s eyes. How this is resolved makes for a great read (as usual).

Andreo’s art……WOW. Since taking over this book, he’s put some fresh energy into the life of Jack Boniface. Andreo’s action sequences really stand out on a page. They really capture the intensity of the moment. Even in Jack’s reflection, readers get the sense of where the mood shifts and how he will be handling this scenario moving forward. Great work with the cameos in this issue as well. At some point, I wouldn’t mind seeing Andreo on a team book for Valiant. He balances out multiple characters on a page with ease.

Overall, the Deadside War takes some fascinating turns in the pages of Shdowman #7. The creative team of Bunn & Andreo deliver on a bleak state of the Valiant Universe while keeping hope that there might be something on the horizon to change everything. Swing over to your LCS and get this issue!

I can’t stress enough: if you haven’t checked out the Originals run going on, you need to fix that ASAP! We Only Kill Each Other by Stephanie Phillips, Peter Krause, Ellie Wright & Troy Peteri is prime example of why. Issue #5, The final issue, has just been released. Let’s take a deep dive into the finale, shall we?

Set in New York City 1938, the story centers around two gangsters: Jonas Kaminsky & Levi Solomon. These two are not friends by any means. However, there is one common enemy they can agree on fighting. With World War 2 on the horizon, there is a growing number of Nazi supporters setting up territory around them. After being arrested for an issue between them, Kaminsky & Solomon is presented an offer they literally can’t say no to by the District Attorney: beat the shit out of Nazis & their criminal records are wiped clean. After some reluctance to work together, they finally agree (albeit with a BIG shove from the D.A.), this odd couple is caught up in the social climate & trying to stop an unforeseen action take place that will have dramatic consequences on the world in general….

What is that you ask…..

How bout saving President Roosevelt from being assassinated? Which is where we start issue #5.

The president is riding on a train. Little does he know, there are forces against him hiding in secret. Meanwhile our pair of unlikely “heroes” makes plans to stop this by jumping on a moving train (?!) and doing whatever they can to stop the assassination from happening. From there, the tension is built and readers are taken on a dramatic ride to see if the pair can save the day or like most of their previous moves, stumble to survive. This might be vague but you definitely need to read the conclusion for yourself.

Phillips pens an fantastic story with this series. The character of Jonas Kaminsky isn’t so much a “good guy” or “Bad Guy.” He is a very morally flawed character. Even to his anger towards Soloman exemplifies that. Jonas plays his part of a younger version of Soloman perfectly. As for Soloman, he was everything you expected: the seasoned veteran to the criminal life. Cool and calm under the constant pressure, Soloman was a great foil to Jonas. Seeing how they started to where they finished was a great read. Phillips really captured the feel of that time in history very well.

Speaking of the feel of that timeline, Krause’s art was perfect for the story. His depiction of NYC circa 1938 was great. The panel set-ups throughout this entire series were well done, esp the “point-counter point” between the DA & Kuhn’s group earlier in the series. For this issue, the train mission was done to perfection. It balanced the tension of the situation to the overall tone of the story. Great last page to close this series out on. Amazing job from issue #1 to close.

Overall, “We Only Kill Each Other” is a fantastic read. The creative team take you back in time for a compelling story that doesn’t let you go until the very end. Make sure to stop by Comixology and check this series out. You won’t be disappointed!

Let’s not waste another minute & jump into this issue, shall we?

After the events of The Eltarian War, our heroes are left without a home. The command center is no more. Zordon is back to being an entity instead of walking around. This is a low point for the team. With no center, Earth is extremely open to attack. With that knowledge, there is an idea of how to fix this problem from the Mighty Morphin Squad. It’s one that might be impossible, but there is no time to delay on that. Plans move pretty fast, but not everyone will be involved with this plan directly.

As the team heads out with a quick stop to Promethea to see an “old friend”, one stays behind and with very good reason. However, danger doesn’t let said character get settled in to defending the earth by themselves. A new threat has made their intentions known. After the first shot is fired, the stakes are raised very quickly. How will this play out while the team is away? Is their plan coming together fast enough? And what happened with the Moon? It’s a brand new jumping on point. Trust me when I say: read it for yourself & you won’t be disappointed!

Groom hits the ground running pretty quickly here. Obviously, with the Eltarian War fallout, the team would be picking up the pieces from the events that just unfolded. The idea of how to fix their biggest problem here is very creative. It almost like an “Oceans 11” vibe to it for how this plan is shaping up. Stakes are high and Groom really drives that point home. The moments with Rocky and his family was a great chance of pace from the other stories happening in this issue. The action sequences with Rocky dealing with defending the Earth will have readers excited to see what happens with the latest threat to the Mighty Morphin team. Seeing the next phase in their plan was a perfect way to end the issue.

Speaking of the action, Hidalgo did a great job making those panels fly off the page. For anyone who thought this would be a calm issue after the Eltarian War will be happily mistaken. I really enjoyed how the battle was presented in this issue. Where the team is going for their mission had some great visuals to match it. After this issue, the creative team really has something special in the works & there is much to look forward to in this run.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #17 is a great issue for new readers to jump abroad & current readers will be very delighted with what’s going on here. There are some very engaging stories in the works and you’ll have to make sure this run is in your pull list each week at the LCS. Excellent issue.
