Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the throwback superhero saga of Grant Garrison heads into a breaking point with its’ latest chapter via Image Comics. Since its’ debut, the story has introduced a wide variety of characters and given fans a renewed sense of classic superhero storytelling.

The Savage Strength of StarStorm #6 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone leads Grant and company into an epic showdown. With the fate of the universe on the line, let’s take a closer look and see how things pan out, shall we?

After the Omega Squadron rescued Grant, Jen and Eli, they were informed of an alien Vanguard coming to Earth. Being recruited into the upcomin battle, The resistance secret base was compromised with the heroes escaping and on the run. With the city left in shambles, readers open to see Bolt, Kid Bolt and Paaldin running away from the forces of Evil invading. Luckily for them, they run into more re-inforcements.

All the while, the trio of Grant, Eli and Jen escape with Ren and find out his true origin. Readers get plenty of information as the mystery of Grant starts coming together. Hard choices are forthcoming. Can Grant make the right ones to win the war or protect the people he cares about? As the war rages onward, every decision leads to higher stakes.

There is plenty of action as showdowns long built finally appear. When the smoke clears, the ending of this issue will throw readers for a loop as more secrets are revealed. The future of Grant Garrison looks to change course yet again and that’s nothing but a win for readers.

The ever expanding universe Dew Craig has created grows further with this arc ending chapter. It is always impressive to see how many original characters appear in each issue but this one might be a record breaker. With the feeling of intergalactic war looming, it fits the story perfectly and gives it a serious tone.

The revelations surrounding Grant and his powers also make big impact as he gets thrown tough calls that his inexperience might not be ready for. All of this leads to a closing act which no reader will see coming. It’s paced well with the action not to slip under the radar as one chapter closes and a brand new one looks to begin.

Craig and Firestone add in great two page spreads. When readers think “War”, the art doesn’t falter in presenting that aspect of the story. There’s a great one page spread introducing more characters before all hell breaks loose with the battle of good versus the Draigonian Empire. The complimenting two page full spread is sure to be a hit with fans. The closing moments throws everything in reverse as Grant’s decisions change the course of the book as the chapter ends.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The opening arc for Grant Garrison closes on a solid note with an issue that brings the action. Craig and Finestone construct big action and high drama as the strength of Starstorm might not be enough to carry the weight of the universe in his hands. BATMAN AND ROBIN #2 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we're following along the latest adventure featuring DC COMICS’s dynamic duo! Throughout their legendary pairing, BATMAN and ROBIN have always had a close knit relationship, but the relationship between Bruce and Damian Wayne has been complicated to say the least. Now debuting out of the Gotham War pages, the latest edition to the monthly Batman titles looks to make it's mark at the LCS!

The issue begins with a flashback sequence with a young Damian Wayne/ Damian is fascinated with a small bat looming around him. The League of Assassins isn’t feeling the same way and Mistress Harsh kills the bat in front of the young boy. The killing is symbolic to teach Damian a lesson. The message being: Don’t get attached because feelings are a weakness.

The story returns to present time where Batman is being attacked by a swarm of Bats! With last issue’s events, a mysterious assailant named Shush has shot Batman with a gas pellet. The gas turns the bats violent. Batman is ready to take an extreme action to end this situation until Damian talks him out of it. With plan B in place, the bats are handled but more questions loom.

Meanwhile, Shush starts planning her next moves against Batman. Readers bare witness that there’s more of a personal connection going on than what was originally thought. Dr. Kafira is still in her custody with an ominous voice lurking in the shadows.

How does the dynamic duo bounce back from this? The stage is set for classic detective work as more evil forces are at hand. Both Bruce and Damian have challenges to face but those events come full circle as a dramatic action takes place leaving readers gasping for the next issue to drop.

Williamson continues to pressure the family dynamic while slowly revealing the secrets behind this latest case. Shush’s actions elude to a more personal attack and motives. Readers bare witness to more forces at work but little reveals to the overall picture. The dynamic duo’s banter plays off each other well.

Considering how strained their past few months have been, seeing the slow mending of fences has been a great touch to the book. The action is spaced out well giving ample time to develop the story. The final segment starts building up the tension to a final explosive page. There’s much to enjoy here.

Di Meo and Wands gives readers a high-energy book to look at for this chapter. There’s an excellent two-page full piece that brings in the dangers with the bats. Shush makes a splash with readers overseeing her attack on Batman. The panels involved her scheming prove to build more foundation to an already strong story.

The “family bonding” moments between Bruce and Damian continue to be a fantastic part to this series. Di Meo brings out the emotions of the family rebuilding itself while separating the heroic alter-egos. Excellent final page to close events on with a great cliffhanger.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The next chapter in the Dynamic Duo’s legacy doesn’t falter in delivering a great story. Williamson’s strong writing balances a fractured family with the quest of justice exceptionally well. Combine that with Di Meo and Wands electrifying work and you have the recipe for a can’t miss series. Don’t miss this on New Comic Bok Day!

For this entry, we are checking out one of the most anticipated debuts of the year. Entering into another year, the Best Jackett Press line written by SCOTT SNYDER has been a smash success digitally for Comixology Originals and in print form (via Dark Horse Comics).

With the latest phase kicking off with DUCK AND COVER #1 with Rafael Albuquerque (STOUT CLUB), the next book announced brings forth an additional co-writer making his debut in the world of comics. What better way to start “Scottober 2023” off with another fantastic series written by not one, but two Snyders!

The story begins in La Grange, Kentucky. It seems like a normal day at first. Kids playing in a backyard on a sunny day. Not a care in the world. How little did they know how fast things would change in a blink of an eye.

A mysterious black square appears in the yard. A cardinal flies by it and gets tangled up in its’ expanding tentacles. It is at this moment, readers begin to sense what terror is about to unfold.

Within a week, the black substance (now known as “The Shroud”) has spread rapidly, leaving much death and destruction in its’ wake. The future looks very bleak as it appears that little might be able to stop its’ spreading. Scientists discover that diamonds affect the substance but is it too little too late?

The story jumps 13 years ahead as readers get introduced to Canon and Jo. They are awaiting someone named Pindle to arrive. They scramble to make preparations with the farm animals they have to barter. Once the plan is in place, they peel the curtain back to the new world!

What visions do readers see? As the pages turn, the landscape is filled with characters all trying to find their place in this dangerous landscape. Allies, Enemies and Hope carry Canon and Jo on their business dealing. However one big move is made that changes everything. The fallout sets the stage for a greater mystery at hand and leaves readers with a lasting impression that will only grow as the story goes forward.

Talk about an impressive debut! There are many themes surrounding this story. From the opening, the tempo is set with a fast-paced opening act. The danger is presented loudly with featuring how fast the Shroud has spread. The time jump hits the ground running introducing the two main characters with a great jump-on point for readers. However, it is when the curtain is pulled back (literally) that the story shifts gears into an adventurous course.

The tone reflects an RPG-esque influence as Canon and Jo try to barter for supplies. Once that situation is “resolved”, the story takes a distinct turn in a dangerous course. The father and son duo place some clues for later in the journey to pay off concerning Jo and his connections to some of the supporting cast. The ending portion of the chapter throws in a few more surprises in the mix. There isn’t a point where anything felt overshadowed The story is very well written and detailed that readers will start generating theories right after the last page is read. It’s an entrapping story that you won’t want to put down.

Favoccia (along with Cogar and Napolitano) deliver an amazing post-apocalyptic world within these pages. There is an incredible two-page full shot of the “View from the Needles” that will make readers jaws’ drop. The action sequences pop off the page with the swift pacing of character movements. Favoccia gives the major antagonists dramatic entrances as well, giving readers a sense of the dangers looming ahead.

Introducing so many characters in one issue can be difficult, but Favoccia gives everyone their own unique looks and mannerisms. The interactions Jo leads with them prove to be a solid break from the action. The closing moments mix in flashbacks along with the mystery under Cogar’s coloring. The final panel mirrors what readers will be thinking as this adventure is only just beginning.

Backed by the stunning visuals of Favoccia, Cogar and Napolitano, the escapades of Jo and Canon’s survival in this dangerous new world is presented on a grand scale that will only be more impressive with each issue.

BATTLE CHASERS #10 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, a legendary series returns to the comic shops this week for the first time since 2001! In the early 1990’s after the big Seven (Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, and X-Men line artists Rob Liefeld (X-Force), Whilce Portacio (Uncanny X-Men), Marc Silvestri (Wolverine) and Jim Lee (X-Men) left Marvel Comics formed Image Comics, many fans wondered who would be the next big superstar to emerge from the top line of comics at the time. They didn’t have to wait too long as an artist made an immediate impact and gave the flagship title a whole new look. His name was Joe Madureira.

Madureira was named the artist on Uncanny X-Men in 1994. His work led to the success of the “Age Of Apocalypse” storyline as well as “The Trial Of Gambit” just to name a few. With a style all his own, Madureira quickly became one of the biggest artists in all of comics. In 1997, Madureira left Marvel to join up with an offshoot imprint of Jim Lee’s Wildstorm line known as Cliffhanger. Madureira joined Humberto Ramos (Crimson) and J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl) with a creator owned title “Battle Chasers” in 1998.

The fantasy-adventure book had much hype behind it but constant release issues with the series led to the last issue being published by Image in 2001! In that time, Madureira has gone on to different non-comic projects with a few returns to Marvel with “Ultimates 3” in 2007, “Avenging Spider-Man” in 2011 and “Inhuman” in 2014. However, fans have never stopped clamoring for more Battle Chasers. Image released The Battle Chasers Anthology in 2019 to huge reactions. With a fanbase still clamoring for more, an announcment was made that shocked and electrified fans…

Early in 2023, Image and Madureira announced that they were bringing the series back with the long-awaited Battle Chasers #10 (by Madureira and LUDO LULLABI). The wait is finally over! The book is in stores! Let’s take a deeper look at how the story fares after debuting 25 years ago, shall we!

This issue kicks off with a great recap of characters for readers jumping in for the first time:

Garrison - A former Paladin coming to terms with his past involving Aramus

Red Monika - An infamous figure who plays by her own rules

Gully - The daughter of the legendary Aramus, Gully possess gauntlets once wore by her father that have immense power

Calibretto aka Bretto - A war machine that has a mind of its’ own and is a force to be reckoned with

Knolan - A wizard of great mystery and capabilites

The story as it stands is the world of Gaia is in danger. Mana, a prime resource is dying out. Sides are being taken and conflict is rising. King Vaneer has played a role in the power balance, helping Gully and Bretto in the search for Aramus. The same cannot be said for Garrison who defies an order to captrue red Monika and now becomes a fugitive himself!

Red Monika wakes up in Garrison’s house after escaping Lord August. Garrison is waiting at the house and informs her that she was followed. Outside the house is Mastreo, leading the Martial Paladins on their bounty mission. Readers get a quick introduction into what they are capable of after they dispose of Akiman, Monika’s partner. Mastreo and his team bicker about what to do when Garrison and Monika make a break from the house. However, they don’t get too far before the Paladins make another play.

All the while, Gully is confronting her alleged brother Sebastian Nefar, who is rotting in a cell with no hands after trying to put on Gully’s gauntlets. Their conversation is brief but sets Gully on a quest to fin answers. What happens when she goes searching? What of Garrison and Monika’s fate? How does Bretto play into the mix? Readers are taken on quite the adventure as events are set in motion, kicking the saga of Battle Chasers into high gear.

BREAKDOWN: Madureira plays into the strengths of what makes this series such a beloved one with fans. The relationship between Garrison and Monika has always been combustible. Madureira focuses in on this for some great back and forth moments. The latest threats of the Martial Paladins are an interesting one. They come across to the reader as highly dangerous and ones that have a separate agenda all their own. Gully’s story didn’t get as much time in comparison (only 6 pages)but hit its’ key points. The dynamic with her and Sebastian works flawlessly to set up the forthcoming drama. As a “welcome back” issue, it does a great job for connecting with new and older readers of the series.

LULLABI steps in the art duties and delivers on fast moving, BIG action panels. The short sequence with them taking out Akiman delved into that frenetic pace. The moments with the Paladins hunting Garrison and Monkia establish the stakes very quickly.This leads into an amazing 2 page full panel spread closing out Garrison’s portion of the issue. Lullabi does a spectactular job catching Gully’s reactions to Sebastion’s manipulations. Ranging from anger to puzzled to defiant, the emotions display sold that time in the book and made up for the lack of pages. Great final panel to send things off into the next issue.

The saga of Battle Chasers resumes without missing a beat. Madureira and Lullabi greet new and faithful readers with great storytelling and incredible visuals that encompasses why this series still connects with fans after 25 years! With the action and drama building back up, it is a perfect time to add this series to your comic book collection.
